The black dress was glamorous and perfectly outlined her figure. The intricate red rose was so life-like, attached to her shoulder.
Her lips curved lightly, and the servants dared not make the slightest sound, afraid of attracting the woman's attention.
Her face seemed small and lovely, nearing the description of cute and pretty. However, those who had dealt with her knew she wasn't as lovely and soft as she looked.
The slender finger traced the outer side of the glass on the table. Listening to the report of the guard who was kneeling below her, she seemed emotionless.
Without her order, the guard dared not lift his head. He continued to kneel. Anxiousness grew in his heart. The sweep of that sharp, knife-like gaze was brief, yet it brought him pressure.
The princess brought in from the human world wasn't as weak as the rumor outside, he complained in his heart.
"Say that again." The cold voice sounded again.
The servants' hearts shook, almost jumping in fear.
The guard resisted the urge to lift his head. He recited the report he had brought back from outside. "Reporting to Your Highness, a few guards had died during the last few days. There are some bite and claw marks on their bodies."
"Who do you think did it?" The tone of her question was flat.
The guard was surprised to hear the question. He hesitated for a split second and could only bite the bullet. "This humble guard thinks that it was done by the beasts in the Forest of Beasts. They have been spotted entering the city lately."
As soon as the guard finished speaking, a chuckle resounded in the hall room. Humorless and cold.
When the people in the hall room snuck a glance at Irene's expression, they discovered that her eyes were filled with frost.
"Good." The tone wasn't good. "Get up."
The guard slowly got up from his kneeling position. He was a vampire. Kneeling for a few minutes wouldn't be a problem, but he had done that for almost an hour just now. His body was still similar to that of a human, so he was a bit shaky after kneeling for so long.
It was unknown whether the princess in front of him was doing it deliberately or not.
Irene could see at a glance that this guard didn't look like he had a great physical condition, more like a vampire picked randomly from the crowd.
In the vampire race, there were still elites. Those with the qualification of greater strength than normal vampires could be guards.
"You are dismissed." She waved her hand, her lips curled up lazily as she leaned on the cozy, soft chair. The perfect epitome of a self-indulgent ruler.
The guard was taken aback, not expecting that her reaction was just like that. Did she care about the dead guards or not? The people in the hall room were doubtful.
At that moment, just as the guard walked out, someone walked in.
"You all, get out," Irene said to the rest of the people, her eyes narrowed at the approaching figure.
The servants revealed an expression of fear on their faces before they scrambled to get out of the room. Irene noticed their expressions.
"You are scaring them, old man." She said in a lazy tone with a hint of ridicule.
The so-called old man actually didn't really look old. On the contrary, he looked the complete opposite; young and fresh.
It was her eldest brother, Stelian Hildegard.
However, it was just that, according to the calculation of human age, he was qualified to be her ancestor.
He was dressed in a black robe, matching his cold and gloomy temperament. The long silver hair hung from his shoulder to his chest. The pale complexion didn't reduce his outstanding looks in the slightest. He gave off the vibes of a cold, ruthless beauty belonging to men.
"Seeing your management of Blackcourt City, you are capable." Stelian was emotionless. He didn't give her a good attitude in return.
One glance and people would know that these two didn't like each other.
The newly-returned princess of the vampire race was given a small city like Blackcourt City after she returned. Even worse, the city was near the Forest of Beasts, which had a lot of fierce and deadly beasts lingering in it.
The prince brothers didn't look favorably on her either. Some were sarcastic, some ignored her, and some looked down on her.
After all, the presence of a princess was the first in history. Most of the female babies in the royal family either died after a few years of birth or died inside the womb.
So, in the eyes of the nobles and the masses, the attitude of the royal family to her was clear. She wasn't favored. They were afraid that this princess would be short-lived, or even if she didn't, her bloodline presumably wasn't strong.
In short, they thought that she was weak, unworthy of too much of their attention. Nevertheless, she was still the source of gossip; whispers among noble ladies at tea parties, or the entertaining topic of dinner in several households.
"I am indeed capable." Irene took his sarcastic words nonchalantly, with the hint of challenge.
Among the royal family members, the one she had the worst relationship with was Stelian. She didn't treat him with a good attitude.
Many regarded her with scorn, calling her ungrateful. Stelian was the one who brought her to this Astral Continent to be recognized as a royal princess, living a noble title above thousands, but her attitude to him could only be described with the word disrespectful.
Some of them called her a fake. Royal children couldn't be born a girl. For several generations, she was the only one. So, they began to suspect her identity, that she was pretending to be one. However, under the majesty of Stelian, this rumor was mostly suppressed. Who would dare to openly accuse one of the princes that he was lying?
"In the last few decades, it's the first time that so many guards have died. And so, it happened after you took over." He looked at her with a meaningful gaze.
Irene supported her chin with her right hand. Her finger traced the shiny surface of the glass on the table beside her.
"I know." She lifted one of her eyebrows. Stelian's words didn't affect her mood. "This city is also one of the cities under you, North Lord."
Since there was only one king in the entire vampire race, the territory was divided into five: Imperial Capital, North Territory, South Territory, West Territory, and East Territory.
On the Astral Continent, there were only two major races; the werewolves, and the vampires. Some figures from other races may appear occasionally, but the ones dominating the broad mainland were still these two.
Compared to the vampire race, the hierarchy system in the werewolf race was more complex. They weren't unified as one and divided into territories with a leader in each one.
Irene was similar to one of these werewolf leaders. It was just that she still had someone above her, up until the king's position.
Unfortunately, someone above her happened to be Stelian. However, she was never as glad to be a leader under him as she was now. She got another chance to taunt this arrogant man.
"So, as the North Lord, I am reminding you of your abilities."
Irene looked up from the activity of checking her nails. The bored expression was replaced with an innocent one. Like an innocent white rabbit who didn't know what wrong she had done.
"I am truly capable. You already said that. No need to repeatedly remind me of my abilities, brother." The last word was emphasized with a sarcastic tone.
"Royal Sister, you are here." Another man walked in.
If Stelian gave off the impression of deadly cold beauty, then this man was the kind of sunny person with a light temperament. The short silver hair enhanced his extraordinary looks, making him look like a gentle prince.
"Don't be too hard on her. She's still new here." He said with a frown to his eldest brother.
It seemed that this youngest male member of the royal family, Edmund Hildegard, had heard Stelian's words. With his exceptional senses, it was no wonder he could hear it.
Stelian merely sneered at his words.
Irene nodded slightly, acknowledging his greeting, but gave no response to his words.
She lifted the glass in her hand and took a few gulps. The movement was filled with indescribable elegance.
Stelian's iceberg face finally showed another expression. He frowned slightly at the sight before his expression returned to normal again.
"Lord Father summoned you to the palace."
Irene's movement paused briefly. She put the nearly empty glass back on the table.
"What happened?"
It was Edmund who asked first. His brows twisted together. Irene sent him a surreptitious glance, pondering something.
Stelian didn't answer him. He stared at Irene. "Go to the palace right now."
After that, he left. His figure disappeared in a split second. The room was instantly quiet.
"Irene, don't think too much. Lord Father probably wants to tell you something important."
She knocked her fingers against the surface of the glass, making small sounds that resonated in the wide hall room. She gave a small, soft response. "Yeah."
She went to the teleportation array stationed in the mansion to get to the palace quickly. The territory of the vampire race was half of the continent, so it was quite wide, and the distance was far. Even though the vampire race could teleport, it would take too long to get there.
She had just recognized her new identity, so she still took time to adjust to things.
Irene entered the majestic palace where the king lived, step by step in a graceful manner. The palace maids and guards sent her a surreptitious glance, wondering about this princess who rarely showed her face in the palace.
Irene had changed to a new dress, but it was still black. The long dress with an intricate rose design gave her a sense of undeniable glamour.
If looks were the measure of royal status, she could get listed by her face alone with the evaluation of very high status. It was a pity that the status of royalty was determined by strength and bloodline.
And she hadn't even received her bloodline awakening yet.
As she finally stepped into the wide throne hall, her footsteps were the only sound resonating in the room. Other vampires teleported, but what did she do?
She still maintained her calm, and as she finally arrived in front of the king, she gave a bow. Lifting her face, she slowly met the calm, inscrutable eyes of the king.
The majestic hall was built so gorgeously with many sparkling ornaments, the walls a few times higher than the average height of a human; they were painted in tapestry. Such a sight, the sense of ancientness of the palace would definitely attract Irena's admiration if it were an archeological site for tourist attractions. However, at this moment, she had no attention to spare, for her eyes were looking straight ahead. She hadn't seen them within her eyesight before, but she could sense their presence. Standing on each side of her, Stelian and Edmund were also awaiting the king's order. The king didn't seem old. He looked like he was in his early thirties, his eyes shone with wisdom and brilliance belonging to a capable monarch. His shoulders were sturdy, straightened with the sense of majesty. His silver hair was cut short, and the color of his eyes was bright like gold. Neither cold nor warm, he was better at controlling his facial expressions than his eldest son, Stelian. Even n
She was Celosia Ferner, the daughter of Duke Ferner, one of the prestigious nobles in the vampire race.As the daughter of a duke, her life felt like a princess, didn't it? Just lacking the formal title. Now that a genuine one showed up, it was like a basin of cold water splashed on her head, reminding her she wasn't a true princess. No matter how close she was to the few queens, in the end, she was still not a true royal. The palace maids around working on their job shifted some part of their attention to the two of them, their ears perked up like an audience listening to a drama.Queen Alvira had just returned from giving orders to a maid. She kindly gazed at Irene. "Irene, sit down. I will introduce you to a new friend."Irene complied, sitting down without any scruple. The palace maids seemed to hear the sigh of disappointment from within their hearts."This is Celosia. She is the daughter of Duke Ferner. Her mother was pretty close to your mother back then." Queen Alvira introduc
At night, Irene was back to the city lord's mansion. The servants knew that she was still practically half-human right now, and she couldn't get rid of the habit of eating human food. She could perceive their contempt as they moved around cutting fruits, preparing the cutlery, and making the dinner table. She simply put on an emotionless face. How could such a little thing bother her? In the end, they still obediently serve her.She tasted the food. Even if some tasted too salty or too sweet, she didn't blink. She had eaten food which tasted way worse, and she also had begun to lose her sense of taste. The only thing she regretted was this loss, that she pestered her alchemist friend to make food that could be eaten by vampires. She was served by a lot of servants. As she ate, one servant was washing her feet. Albeit she was eating pretty quickly, she still retained her calm and collected demeanor, not lacking the table manner of a lady.At some point she felt that the maid washing he
"You are not bad." The deep voice sounded pleasing to the ears.Irene's eyes narrowed at his words, suddenly her anger spiked up. She forcefully restrained her uncontrollable emotion. She didn't know why this man's words could induce such a reaction from her. Besides Stelian, he was the second person in this Astral continent who managed to annoy her.She didn't hesitate anymore to move very fast, the small nimble body jumped into the air, not impeded by the black dress in the slightest. She quickly sent him a punch, gathering the familiar power in her body. The man wasn't about just becoming a sitting duck either. He parried her attack, sometimes dodging, and oftentimes attacking back.In less than a minute, they had exchanged hundreds of moves.Irene fought him fiercely, not annoyed at all when she found that he was harder to deal with than she thought. The more she fought, the more excited she became.Obviously, the man also noticed her weird state. The matter about her fighting bea
Irene was silent, her expression inscrutable. It was unknown whether she felt disturbed by the question or not. After all, it had been her obsession.Reyes' eyes became complicated. He sighed quietly in his heart. "I have been gone for a lot of days. There are a lot of things to be taken care of." Her face didn't show the slightest emotion. She slung the things on her shoulder, then walked out of his cabin. The cabin was quite big, but since Irene used the teleportation ability that the royal vampire possessed, she had gotten out quickly.Thinking of this newfound ability, the light in her eyes deepened. Going to the Forest of Beasts wasn't without gain this time. She had actually awakened the most useful ability. Not all vampires possessed this skill, mostly only those with thick bloodlines did, so royal children were a must. She was a bit uncoordinated at first, and slowly, she was getting better at it. It made dashing around the forest more convenient. She was able to move without
Irene could still hear Stefan saying a series of words to Rufus, and her brain seemed to process them too slowly. However, she vaguely still understand what he intended to do.Her eyelashes trembled as another wave of pain wracked her body. She was gasping, breathing hard. If she was not in the middle of completely transforming into a pureblood vampire, perhaps her body would have been drenched with cold sweat at the moment. She forcibly endured staying conscious."Her Highness is busy. Go back, I will call you when she is ready." The stern words were uttered by Rufus, standing straight in front of the door, blocking Stefan and his people. His whole body exuded extreme coldness."This is a message from His Majesty. Do you dare to ignore it?" Stefan insisted, his head was raised high. The people behind him, mansion guards, and some maids seemed to reveal the look of approval even though they didn't voice their opinions.Rufus' brows knitted together. He still didn't back down. "You do
It was Kairos, her full biological brother. The silver hair was unlike Stelian's, as his hair was cut short. It made his countenance resemble King Darien, the vampire king further. Whenever she faced him, she couldn't help but fall into a fleeting stupor. Those grey eyes were so similar to her mother, whose eyes, in the short minutes were etched deeply and indelibly in her memory. The thought only lasted a moment, and she quickly recovered herself. Nevertheless, her mood was slightly affected."Welcome, brother." She said with a little stiffness. As quick as passing clouds, her countenance returned to that aloof, undisturbed expression again.Kairos wasn't as aggressive as Stelian, but he was equally inscrutable. Especially his stance toward his sister. Would he think that she had killed their mother?"Lord Father called you to the palace for the awakening ceremony." He said concisely, straight to the point. The pairs of grey eyes flitted to Stefan, who had just awakened from his da
In the awakening chamber, Irene was currently unconscious. Her skin was coated with red, and a trace of blood was on her lips. It was her blood. It was not without consequence that she tried to withstand such a terrifying force. The accumulation of the power of ancestors indeed couldn't be underestimated. She had been too reckless and impatient. Now, after she had just recovered from the magnetic field sequelae, she was injured again. Her inner organs had ruptured, hence the blood on her lips. Luckily, she protected her heart. Otherwise, she'd be without a complete corpse by now.The damage caused by the tyrannical force had calmed down, and the cells began to repair themselves slowly. Even in her unconscious state, Irene still dimly feel great pain as weakness overtook her entire being. After what seemed to be a long time, her consciousness hovered between sobriety and drunkness."Dæmon's people snatched the weapons again. We were the ones who intercepted these scoundrels. Now, they
In the past, she had gotten used to acting and playing things according to her way, so there was no need to suppress her temper. Only did she toned it down upon arriving in the Astral Continent. Her cold mask was a part of her guise; the other half was a temperamental one.Seeing the familiar face standing in the doorway, looking cold and displeased at her small figure sitting on a soft chair, Irene didn't put on a pleasing mask. Sneering at him with contempt, she turned the other way.The two forces collided in the air, oppressive and overwhelming and the remaining people could only put an expression of horror, instinctively wanting to escape the scene."Royal Father is waiting for you." Stelian's tone was stern, there was undisguised mockery in his eyes. She continued to ignore him, turning to the maid who had shrunk to the side trying to reduce her presence and ordering her. "Lead the way."The maid was startled, instinctively taking a pee
The vague memories of what was happening when she lost her consciousness came crashing down like torrential waves, each scene so vividly in her head driving her mad. What had she done? The color of the pupils frantically changed to red. The unstable emotion was getting out of control. The man in front of her was startled. His eyes flashed as he advanced toward her. "You… calm down."It was Stelian's face!Listening to him saying such words from his mouth was so disgusting that Irene had the urge to throw up. She couldn't believe she had been in such close proximity to someone who shared the same bloodline as her.As despicable, as disgusting, as detestable, and as loathsome as she was, such a thing had crossed her bottom line. It was beyond all these words, the degree was immeasurable by words."Stay away." She snarled, the red eyes glaring at him with hatred. With difficulty, Irene moved her trembling body, the finger pointing at him, who had stopped moving all of a sudden. "Don't ev
Stelian didn't react much. The footsteps stopped, but he merely glanced at her briefly. Still, with the usual stoic-looking face, he continued to walk away, disappearing in his third step.Irene narrowed her eyes, a vague outline of anger visible in her scrunched face. It was just a test, yet the answer she had gotten nonetheless annoyed her. Of course, Stelian should know who she was talking about as she had a guess that the person must have been slaughtered somewhere recently. Suppressing the fury in her heart, she hastened her footsteps. The entire countenance was cold, and her body radiated oppressiveness as if she was enveloped in frost; whoever touched her was going to turn into a frozen statue. In this state her entire being was alert and in high sensitivity.Briefly, she closed her eyes. When she opened them again, a pair of outlines of people appeared in her range of sight. They were such familiar acquaintances that she couldn't be more familiar w
Willa looked startled, her head snapped at the window, a flash of vigilance in the eyes that made Irene wonder.Irene stood up and approached the window, opening it amidst Willa's watchful eyes. The red, small bird fluttered in the air, then obediently landed on her shoulder, right beside the red rose. With a hint of doubt, she gazed at the little red bird, wondering why it seemed a bit unusual today as if it was intimidated by something. Its red feathers trembled slightly, and the footing on her shoulder was a bit shaky before it finally could stabilize itself."It's my messenger bird." The pleasing voice floated in the air, a hint of reassurance."Ah." Willa let out a small gasp. "Your Highness has a messenger bird?"She nodded in response, rubbing the slightly wet feathers of the red bird, and didn't let the bird spit out the letter in its stomach. The bird was small, its body length was around three fingers, but it had a space power. Quite a rare bird nowadays which didn't origin
The two high, mighty queens who were supposed to be above thousands of people; the most respected queens of the vampire race were doing something she least expected. She found that she had been in a daze a lot lately, most of the time thinking about how to solve her ongoing problems. But now, she discovered that she dazed off because she didn't know how to react.Queen Lamia's moves were very agile. The small pale hands clutched the pot, stirring it gently to create the dough. Queen Izora also busied herself with the stove, melting the chocolate. Seeing them like this, she couldn't just sit idly.Irene stood up, intending to help them. The remaining palace maids were already biting their lips or nails in anxiety, afraid that something would go wrong with the two queens during the cooking process. Even so, they didn't try to stop them, which was quite strange. "Just sit and wait." Queen Lamia saw Irene standing up and reprimanded her. "Don't you believe our cooking skills?""But--" sh
As a royal descendant, she was required to participate in special training. The first class she had that day was archery. People may wonder, why would vampires who possessed innate strength capable of smashing elephants into pieces needed to learn such an inefficient thing. The answer was that, for the preservation of their life. Every single second on the battlefield decided life and death. In case the power within their body was overdrawn, they could only remain to be a sitting duck then. If a vampire could also incorporate their force into the arrows, the result would be even better.Irene was calm as she held the bow in her hand. She had just launched an arrow but was missing the target. Lowering her eyes slightly, the long silky hair covered a part of her face, making her expression unreadable. This ground was available for high-ranking nobles’ descendants as well. Celosia strode forward beside her, the breeze knocking her strand of hair gently.Arrogantly, the daughter of the d
She didn't lose her mind. The incoming claw was severed just as the man's hand was about to slap it away, causing double destruction to the beast's body that its skin hit by the man became ruptured."I can handle it." She lifted her chin. The tone was slightly arrogant. It was unknown what came over her. The second time she saw him, something was blocked inside her chest. Then, a tacit understanding and cooperation came just as naturally. The two people's position gradually changed, becoming closer physically; their backs against each other. The attacks of the beasts were solved easily like they were swatting a bunch of mosquitos.Irene hadn't spoken besides these four words. Nikolas didn't seem like he wanted to talk much either. However, after time passed, she finally opened her mouth and asked. "What are you doing here?"Nikolas raised one of his eyebrows. They didn't stop warding off the incoming attack just because of the start of this small conversation. "It should be just like
The aura around her instantly turned cold, and a pair of eyebrows tightly twisted. After she took a deep breath, the small figure crouched down to check the body on the ground. “Do you know who did it?” “It only appeared today.” He was identified as a male vampire, with a gash on his chest. The huge gaping wound was without a heart. His head missing an eye, and his mouth was bruised; all parts pretty much made his identity unrecognizable from who he was when he was alive. The only indication was the greyish color of the blood, which meant that he was not a commoner. The appearance was so strange that Irene couldn’t help but have doubts. For a moment, she suspected Nikolas did it but immediately shook that notion away. He didn’t seem to be such a person who would kill and not admit it. It wasn’t that she thought he was an honest person, but someone of his stature surely had his own arrogance. Killing and fleeing would shatter his pride, and the dignity of the strong power he possess
"Is this yours?" The deep voice sounded again, awakening her from the sudden shock. Irene's pupils constricted, looking at the man wearing a slightly torn shirt, revealing his toned arm muscle. Instead of giving him a ragged look, it amplified the sense of attractive wildness. "What?" Her hoarse voice sounded, and a frown marred her forehead. This man's face was akin to a Greek sculpture; perfect and fascinating with sharp and prominent features. However, it wasn't enough to make her lose her mind. She vigilantly glanced around, making sure that it wasn't the second assassination. Then, her gaze fell on the thing on his hand, the sight that had sent her into a shock. It was a piece of bloody red meat, and the quantity wasn't small. If she wasn't wrong, it must have been the flesh of the white-furred werewolf earlier. The man motioned to her hand, then to her face. "If it's yours, I will leave it here." He put down the bloody meat and then turned around, walking away. Irene's
