Chapter 1

Author: Orangey
I received news that my husband had been hospitalized due to food poisoning. I ignored the pain shooting up my sprained ankle and hobbled to the hospital as fast as I could.

As soon as I pushed open the door to his hospital ward, he shot past me swiftly and embraced a young woman behind me.

"Honey, you're finally here! I missed you so much!"

The woman shot me a provocative glance, then wrapped her arms around his neck before kissing him with flushed cheeks.

The two of them were completely immersed in their own world.

Only after that did he seem to notice my presence. Then, he scratched his head sheepishly. "Honey, Mom takes such good care of herself. She doesn't look 50 at all!"

An eerie silence filled the hospital room from his unexpected reaction.

I stared at him in utter disbelief. Did I look 50?

The woman beside him quickly shook him. "You've got the wrong person! She's not my mom!"

Hearing this, he froze for a moment. "Then who is she?"

I took a deep breath, trying to stay calm, but I couldn't stop my voice from trembling. "Sebastian Smith, I'm your wife! What's wrong with you? Why don't you recognize me?"

He reacted as if he had just heard a ridiculous joke. "Are you kidding me? My wife's name is Roseline Carter—she's fair-skinned and beautiful. You look like an ugly freak with that scar on your face. How dare you claim to be my wife?"

Matthias Ziegler quickly stepped forward to interrupt Sebastian while scratching his head awkwardly. His gaze flickered as he explained, "Alexis, please don't misunderstand. Seb is just talking nonsense.

"He accidentally took some mushrooms called Psilocybe at lunch and passed out after hallucinating. He only just woke up and hasn't come to his senses yet.

"This is Roseline Carter, she's an intern at the office. You know that Seb is completely devoted to you. You're the only person he has ever truly loved."

The faint scar at the corner of my eye, which had long since healed, suddenly began to ache. It hurt so much that my eyes turned red.

I had gotten the scar while rescuing Sebastian from falling into a trap during a camping trip back in college. I accidentally scratched my face on a tree branch.

And now, Sebastian was calling me an ugly freak because of it…

I suddenly remembered a time when I had been curled up on the couch, watching a drama. In the show, the male lead lost his memory after a car accident and mistakenly identified another woman as the love of his life. I had cried my heart out for the suffering female lead.

At that time, Sebastian had held me close and was heartbroken to see my tears. He had comforted me, saying that I was his most precious treasure and that he would never mistake me for anyone else. Even if he grew old and senile, he would still know who I was.

Everyone always said that he loved me deeply. I had always believed that too. But what was this now?

He had forgotten me—yet could effortlessly name Roseline, a newly hired intern.

Was this really because of the Psilocybe that clouded his mind?

Or had he already erased me from his heart little by little without me knowing?

I asked Matthias, "I made Sebastian's lunch myself and personally delivered it to him. I know exactly what was in it—there was no Psilocybe. So how was he poisoned?"

"Seb wanted something else and ordered takeout—"

I cut him off. "Sebastian never eats takeout."

Matthias rubbed his nose, looking guilty and at a loss for words.

Some things didn't need to be spelled out. I had seen enough to understand.

"He ate the food that Roseline brought him, didn't he?" As soon as I said it, a chill ran down my spine.

Suddenly, all those mornings I had spent waking up early, going to the market to buy the freshest ingredients, carefully preparing his lunch, and personally delivering it to his office—

All of it seemed so laughable.

I was so utterly foolish.

Sebastian frowned, looking impatient. "Matthias, why are you still talking to this ugly freak? Get her out of here already."

Matthias looked at me with difficulty. "Alexis, maybe you should go home for now? Once Seb recovers, I'll let you know."

Roseline chimed in as well. "That's right. Sebastian doesn't even recognize you right now. If you stay here, it'll only make things worse for his recovery."

"Shut up! Who the hell do you think you are? What right do you have to speak to me like that?" I snapped, unable to hold back my fury any longer as I glared at her smug face.

"And who do you think you are?" Sebastian sneered, shielding Roseline protectively behind him and stroking her hair reassuringly. He turned his icy gaze toward me.

"Have you thought about the consequences of insulting my wife?"

I silently watched the scene unfold before me as an indescribable pain spread through my body. The man standing before me whom I loved most, the one who made my heart race back in our student days, the one whose features I could sketch with my eyes closed…The man who had loved me for eight years and been married to me for five, the one who once opened his arms only for me, let me act spoiled and playful, and always treated me like his most precious treasure…He was now holding another woman in his arms, cherishing her as he kissed her.At that moment, my vision of him suddenly blurred. The stinging in my eyes grew stronger. I straightened my back, forcing myself to maintain a proud posture as I was unwilling to show even a hint of weakness in front of this lowly homewrecker.Matthias whispered to comfort me, "Alexis, don't be too upset. This will all be cleared up as soon as Seb regains his memory."Cleared up? I let out a cold laugh, turned around, and walked out of that suffo

Sebastian crouched slightly and cupped my face carefully with both hands. "The space in my heart is limited—there's no room for anyone but you."His eyes looked sincere, beckoning me into their depths. But I no longer had the courage to believe so easily."Why didn't you eat the lunch I brought you yesterday? Why did you eat the one Roseline gave instead?" I asked calmly. His face was filled with anger. "Honey, just thinking about it makes me furious. It was all Roseline's fault."She accidentally knocked over the food you made for me, and then she insisted on giving me her own lunch. If it weren't for that, I wouldn't have been poisoned by the Psilocybe and ended up in the hospital. I wouldn't have mistaken your identity and hurt you.""Sebastian, are you telling the truth?""Honey, when have I ever lied to you?" He kissed my forehead gently. "After all these years, haven't my actions been proof enough of my love for you?"As he spoke, he nuzzled my face with a hint of grievan

Sebastian had labeled the recipient of the transfer as "Sunshine."It was an ordinary name, seemingly nothing special. But somehow, I had a gut feeling that it was Roseline.Suppressing the sharp pain rising in my chest, I silently read through the conversation between Sebastian and "Sunshine."Sunshine: "Seb, I don't want your money. I just want to see you. Your Sunshine misses you."Sebastian: "I miss you too. Since Black Friday is coming up, take this as a way to ease your longing. Just accept the money and spend it however you like. Buy whatever you want. Just tell me if it's not enough."Sunshine: "Seb, you are the best! Love you! I'll leave the door open for you tonight. Don't leave me all alone, okay? If you go home to your wife and make me sleep by myself, I'll be mad."Sebastian: "How could my wife ever be as fun as my little troublemaker? Wait for me. I won't go easy on you tonight."Their messages went on and on, filled with blatant flirting and shameless seduction.

"Being a despicable, shameful mistress seems to bring you a lot of pride." I nearly laughed at the arrogance in Roseline's voice. "And to think you went to college—did you forget everything you learned?""You…" Roseline was so furious she could barely speak. "Don't get too cocky. I'm pregnant with Sebastian's child. You know how much he values having an heir."I'm unlike you who spent years by his side but did not bear a single child. Once I give him a son, do you think he'll let you keep the title of Mrs. Smith?""Alright then. Let's see if you're really capable of that."I couldn't be bothered to argue with her any longer. I hung up, saved the recording of our conversation, and took screenshots of Sebastian's flirtatious texts and bank transfer records as evidence. After handling everything, I leaned back on the couch and stared blankly out the window at the old tree, its leaves withering and yellowing with the season.About ten minutes later, I saw Sebastian rushing through th

During our hardest times, Sebastian and I had nowhere to live, so we squeezed into the tiny office at his company, sleeping on makeshift bedding on the floor. Sometimes, we were so broke that we could only afford one plate of pasta to share, and we didn't dare buy a single new piece of clothing for an entire year.I endured all those hardships with him, but I was genuinely happy back then. Life was tough, but his love for me was so sincere that it made me, someone who had lost both parents, feel like there was still someone in this world worth cherishing. So why now? Now that life had gotten better, now that we could finally enjoy everything we had worked so hard for—why did he cheat? No, I couldn't deceive myself any longer. He hadn't just cheated. He had gotten another woman pregnant. At that moment, I realized with painful clarity that there was no salvaging us.We had reached the end."Ah! Why did you push me?"Just as the sound of the door unlocking rang out, Roseline su

Even Gordon could tell that I had injured my foot, yet Sebastian hadn't even asked about it once.He held my arm gently. "Come, sit over here on this bench, and let me take a look at how bad it is."I felt embarrassed and quickly declined. "It's fine, Gordon. It's just a minor injury that's almost healed.""Don't you trust me?" Gordon smiled warmly. "Have you forgotten that I was the one who carried you to the infirmary and borrowed the doctor's medicated oil to massage your ankle when you sprained it while running back in college?"I had no choice but to sit still and let him examine my foot.My skin was fair, making the bruising on my ankle stand out even more.He frowned as he spoke in a slightly stern tone, "You call this not serious? You didn't even treat it properly after spraining it, did you? Does your husband not take care of you at all?"I bit my lip and was just about to say something when a sharp voice interrupted us."What are you two doing?" Sebastian strode over,

After requesting an extended leave from my boss, I boarded a flight abroad.Of course, before leaving, I didn't forget to send Sebastian the divorce papers I had prepared long ago, along with the evidence of his affair that I had gathered. If he had any sense, he would sign them.If not, things would only get ugly in the end. This trip had no fixed destination—I just wanted to get away, see new places, taste new foods. Life had to go on. There was no need to punish myself for someone else's mistakes."Alexis."When I saw Gordon standing on a foreign street corner, I thought I was imagining things. "Gordon? What are you doing here? What a coincidence! We've run into each other again.""What if I told you this isn't a coincidence…" He looked at me with an open, direct gaze. "But a pursuit I've planned for a long time?""You…" I stood frozen in place."Do you remember how I answered when Sebastian asked me why I was suddenly back?" He took a step closer. But life was hard—we often had to sleep on cold floors, and I had no money for proper prenatal care. In the end, I lost the baby. The doctor told me that it would be difficult for me to conceive again.I still remember how he had broken down in tears in front of me for the first time, soaking my shoulder with his remorse. I dumped all the evidence I had gathered onto the platform—proof that Roseline was the one behind the slander campaign, along with the filthy, disgraceful evidence of her affair with Sebastian. The public opinion flipped completely. I thought she would disappear without a trace out of shame. But I had underestimated her. Instead of retreating, she hired a lawyer and tried to claim a share of the inheritance."Even an illegitimate child has inheritance rights. Alexis Jones, I want 80% of Sebastian's assets. If you refuse, I'll take you to court indefinitely."I scoffed, my voice dripping with sarcasm. "And if I have evidence that the child in your womb isn't Sebastian's, do you still think you stand a chance?"On the other end of the call, Roseline went completely silent. It took her a long moment to finally ask, "How do you know?""Sebastian is the reason he and I never had a child all these years. He had severe oligospermia. My first pregnancy failed because his sperm quality wa

I grabbed Gordon's phone and dialed for an ambulance frantically. My hands trembled as I pressed down on his bleeding abdomen, tears streaming uncontrollably down my face. "I'm sorry, I'm so sorry...""Alexis, this isn't your fault. Don't cry." His lips were pale, yet he still tried to comfort me. "It's okay. It doesn't even hurt.""Come here, Honey!" Sebastian's voice was filled with menace as he ordered me, "I'm taking you home."I snapped. "Sebastian, are you deaf? Can't you just stay out of my life? Your existence disgusts me!"For the first time, I let my pure hatred for him show. "If anything happens to Gordon, I will never forgive you.""Honey, I…"His phone rang—it was the custom ringtone he had set for Roseline. He picked up impatiently. "Didn't I tell you not to call me unless it was important… What? What happened to the baby? Go to the hospital first. I'll be there soon."As he hung up, he bolted for the door. But before leaving, he still refused to give up. "Honey, I
