“One of my properties in the state,” I replied casually, as if it was nothing.

She stared at me for a few seconds, her mouth agape, then shook her head in disbelief. “What has been going on behind my back?” She said, laughing nervously. I joined her laughter, but mine was more confident and smug.

“Oh… nothing. Just a little riches and properties here and there,” I said with a shrug, enjoying her reaction.

“So your husband signed this house to your name then? Did you ask him for more houses, Jane?” She asked, putting her hands on her hips and looking at me accusingly.

“No! Of course not!… I mean, of course he did sign this house to me, but the remaining places are my properties, not his,” I said in exasperation, rolling my eyes at her.

“I’m sorry, Jane… am I missing something? How did you acquire those properties?” She asked incredulously, leaning closer to me.

I burst out laughing at her curiosity and naivety.
