CHAPTER 19: MY MAN IS TWICE THE MAN THAT HE IS.
RACHEL'S POV
The event is finally in full swing, and I make my way through the venue, ensuring that everything runs smoothly. The girls are handling their assigned duties well, but I keep a close eye on them, making sure they don’t face any issues. Beatrice is on the other side also ensuring that things go accordingly as planned.
The event is quite large, and hundreds of people are around. It has to be the biggest event I have ever participated in. I actually don't know what the purpose is but yeah, it is glamorous.
Every now and then, I check on the guests, confirming that they have everything they need—whether it’s food, drinks, or any special accommodations. It’s exhausting, but I remind myself that I have to keep my focus. Tonight needs to be perfect, as Beatrice says.
As I step aside to take a brief moment for myself, Jason suddenly appears beside me. His familiar grin stretches across his face as he greets me casually, but there’s something more in his expression. It’s that playful glint in his eyes, the same one I’ve noticed a few times before. I sigh inwardly, already bracing myself.
“Didn’t expect to see you working so hard,” he teases, leaning in slightly. “You should enjoy yourself a little.”
“I am enjoying myself,” I reply with a polite smile. “I like being useful. Moreover, I get paid for doing this so it is my job. I can't just sit lazing around.”
He chuckles, shaking his head as if he finds me amusing. “You’re different, you know that? Most women here just want to be admired. But you… you actually care.” His voice dips lower as if he’s letting me in on some secret.
I let out a small, awkward laugh, not sure where this is going. “Well, everyone here is working according to their needs. You don't have to bring down another woman just to make me feel good. Everyone wants to be admired - even I want to be admired so it is not a crime.”
Jason steps closer, lowering his voice even more. “I think that’s what makes you special.” His eyes search mine, and it finally dawns on me—he’s trying to flirt.
Well, that is a bad approach. His earlier statement has made me see him as someone with a lack of respect for women, and he doesn't seem to understand or perceive that the air isn't really good for all this. Before I can respond, I shift my hand slightly, and the light catches on the ring wrapped around my finger. Jason’s expression changes in an instant. His eyes widen in surprise, and his gaze locks onto my ring like it’s some kind of foreign object.
“You’re married?” His voice is filled with disbelief.
“Yes,” I answer simply, suddenly feeling self-conscious.
“Wow...I did not know that. To who?” he asks, his confusion evident. “I mean… I didn’t think—”
I smile slightly, cutting him off. “That’s a secret, and that you know. I believe that you should know that all your flirtations are hitting the brick wall. Thank you for keeping me company but I really have to go back to work now,” I say playfully before excusing myself.
As I walk away, my thoughts begin to swirl. Did Noah perhaps know that I’d be receiving attention like this? Is that why he insisted I wear this ring? My fingers brush over the band absentmindedly, a mixture of emotions stirring within me. It’s not like he truly cares, right? This is just part of the arrangement. He is trying to cage me all in while he explores on his own.
I step away from the main crowd, finally finding a moment to breathe, but just as I do, I sense someone approaching. A woman. Her posture is poised, but there’s something sharp in her gaze, something calculating.
“You’ve been getting quite a bit of attention from Jason,” she says, her tone deceptively light. “I couldn’t help but notice.”
Damn it! Can I just have some time to myself without attracting these energy suckers?
I study her carefully. She’s beautiful, confident—someone used to getting what she wants. And right now, she looks like she wants to put me in my place, not that I left anyway.
“I was just doing my job,” I say calmly. “Making sure everything runs smoothly for the guests.”
She tilts her head, her smile laced with something I can’t quite name. “That’s all? Because Jason doesn’t usually pay attention to just anyone.”
I exhale softly, suddenly tired of this game. “I don't see how that is my problem, Miss. It is not in my capacity to figure how whether or not I am not just anyone."
"YOU!" She grits her teeth as she points her finger at me. I figure out that she is probably one of those ladies with interest in Jason but doesn't get attention from him. So sad.
"If you’re worried about us, you don’t have to be. I have no interest in him. I just told him off.”
She narrows her eyes slightly as if gauging my honesty. She raises her shoulders with pride as she replies, “Good that you know your place. Because I don’t like women who think they can get too comfortable around someone whom they are not in his spec.”
Before I can respond, a familiar voice cuts through the tension.
“What’s going on here?”
Noah.
I turn my head, and there he is—standing tall, his gaze shifting between me and the woman in front of me. His presence alone shifts the energy in the air, making it heavier and more charged.
The woman seems momentarily flustered but quickly regains her composure.
"Mr Noah, it is nice to meet you..." she greets with what I assume to be a flirtatious voice and I am so over it already. I roll my eyes. I, however, keep my focus on her, knowing exactly what I need to say and I just want to say it so I can get away from here.
“You don’t have to feel insecure,” I tell her, my voice steady, drawing back the attention to myself.
“I’m a married woman." I meet Noah's calm gaze that is on me and hold it for as long as I say my words. "I respect my marriage, and I respect my husband. I wouldn’t settle for someone like Jason ..." I then shift my gaze to the fuming lady in front of me to complete my words, "when my husband is twice the man he is—in every way.”But it’s not just the woman who hears them. It’s Noah. And for some reason, that realization sends a rush of heat through me.
The woman glares at me, clearly seething. “You’re so full of yourself and I don't blame you. I blame that fool for stooping low and going for girls like you who are below his league,” she snaps before storming off in frustration.
I finally exhaled, realizing just how tense my body had become. But as I shift my gaze, I find Noah still looking at me. His expression is unreadable. His silence stretched between us.
I force myself to hold my ground, refusing to let whatever’s in his eyes shake me. Whatever this is—whatever unspoken tension lingers—it’s not real.
There is no need for it to be so. I nod my head once to signify my greeting before I walk past him to attend to the guests.
CHAPTER 20: I AM NOT INTERESTED.NOAH'S POVThe low hum of conversation and the distant clinking of glasses from the party downstairs barely reach the private lounge where I sit across from Senator Lancaster. The dim reflects off the expensive whiskey in our glasses. The Senator leans back in his chair, clearly pleased as he lifts his glass in a small toast. "Noah," he says, his voice carrying the weight of experience, "this event is a masterpiece. You’ve outdone yourself and I am very impressed. You surprised me. I wasn't really expecting you to pull this off within just a few days though."I nod, taking a sip of my drink. "Thank you, Senator. I appreciate that. It was hard but my team and I had to do it. I am glad that you find it pleasing enough. That is a very good start actually."He chuckles, swirling the amber liquid in his glass. "You’ve got talent, not just in business, but in leadership. Ever considered politics?"I don’t even hesitate. "No."His brows rise slightly, int
CHAPTER 21: BROKEN FINGERS.RACHEL'S POVI get off my bed a little bit late at night because before going to bed last night, Beatrice had sent a message to those of us who worked for the event to take two days off to rest and resume on Monday. That is quite a huge relief. This is why I appreciate and respect her because even though we might not be close, she knows how to take care of those assigned to her. I freshen up and head to the dining table while thinking about how I will spend my day productively. "Good morning, Marco." I greet him with a smile. "Good morning. Yesterday's event must have been tiring for you seeing how late you woke up!" He exclaims and I chuckle, "It is almost noon."I nod, " I am not even exaggerating when I say that it was kind of tough to pull but we did it. I deserve the rest." I respond. "Yeah." "What about Noah? Has he left yet?" "He hasn't stepped out of his room since he entered last night."Huh...that is strange. "Will you check in
CHAPTER 22: THANK YOU.NOAH'S POVA sharp ache pulses through my temples as I stir awake. I blink a few times, my body is still sluggish from the fever that had knocked me out earlier. Instinctively, I try to sit up, but an unfamiliar weight presses against my legs, halting my movement.I look below and see her.Rachel.She’s curled up at the foot of my bed, her arms folded under her head, her chest rising and falling steadily in deep sleep. Strands of her dark hair fall across her cheek, framing her peaceful expression. For a moment, I do nothing but watch her, my throat tightening with an emotion I can’t quite place. She stayed. Even after all the ways I’ve pushed her away, she’s still here. Why? Is she probably putting up an act? How can she be so patient and nice? Why isn't she fighting back? Is it because I do not give her a chance to do such? It all must be an act.I remember everything—the way she stood her ground against Marianne. I hadn’t been asleep. I heard it. I had hear
CHAPTER 23: BURNING SCANDAL NOAH'S POVThe drive to the family estate is quiet, save for the low hum of the engine. Despite the warmth of the evening, my hands feel cold against the leather steering wheel. I know this visit might just not be about delivering a file—nothing with my family is ever that simple. After thinking about it, the Senator could have had anyone else deliver it but chose me purposely.I rub my chin. Maybe this is a conspiracy plan to have me come over.As I pull up to the grand entrance, the imposing gates open before me, a sight that has remained unchanged for years. The family house stands tall, its grandeur undeniable, yet to me, it has always felt suffocating. The weight of expectations, of past wounds, clings to its walls like an unshakable curse.I sigh as I get out of the car.I step inside. The servants, some familiar, some new, greet me with polite nods. Their eyes hold recognition, but also wariness. It has been a while since I last stepped foot here, a
CHAPTER 24: STAY AWAY FROM HER!NOAH'S POVI resumed work, feeling slightly more energized after my recent sickness. It is not my first time falling sick so getting back on my feet didn't take much longer. Also, I oversee the affairs of my establishment, which I don't joke with, so leaving things for too long without attending to them wouldn't be beneficial to me.A few minutes after stepping into my office, I get a knock on my door. "Come in," I order as I loosen my tie before slipping off my suit jacket, rolling my shoulders as I settle into my chair. The door is opened and my manager approaches my desk with a cautious look. "Good morning, sir." "Morning. What is it? Did your grandmother give birth this time around or did your cat die?" I query him as I reach out to pick up my pen before glancing at him briefly with a doubtful expression as he tries to defend himself by waving his hands, contrary to what I had asked. "Not at all, sir." He chuckles, "It is just that Miss
CHAPTER 25: DEATH ANNIVERSARY.AMELIA'S POVThe evening air is thick with humidity as I step out of the cab, clutching a bouquet of white lilies against my chest. My fingers tighten around the delicate stems, my knuckles turning white as I look around. The cemetery is quiet, the only sounds are coming from the rustling leaves and distant chirps of crickets. The fading sunlight casts long shadows over the headstones, and my breath comes out shaky as I force myself to take a step forward.I shouldn’t be nervous. It’s just my mother’s grave. I’ve done this every year, haven’t I? But I know it’s not her that has my heart slamming against my ribs. It’s him.As I walk down the gravel path, my gaze flickers ahead, and I finally see them clearly. Emily stands a few feet away, her arms wrapped around herself, eyes filled with relief as they land on me. And beside her—him. My father. He stands tall, rigid, his hands shoved into the pockets of his suit. He doesn’t look at me. Not even once as I
CHAPTER 26. HE UNDRESSED SSED ME?RACHEL'S POVThe morning light seeps through my curtains, casting a soft glow over my room, but it does nothing to chase away the lingering heaviness from last night. I turn onto my side, burying my face in the pillow, but the moment I close my eyes, my father's cold voice echoes in my mind. The ache in my chest tightens, and I inhale sharply, forcing myself to sit up. My body feels stiff, a dull reminder of the hours I spent crying in the rain.Maybe it wasn't such a good idea to remain there for that long and now I feel like I might not last long on Earth because of the issues I've been facing that seem to be affecting my mental health. With a sigh, I grab my phone from the nightstand. My heart sinks when I see several missed calls from Emily. I hesitate for a moment before setting the phone back down. I don’t know if I have the strength to talk to her yet.I know that her calls have to do with what happened last night but I am less interested. As
CHAPTER 27: FIRST KISS. RACHEL'S POVThe sound of the front door clicking shut breaks the silence in the living room. I glance up from the book I’ve been pretending to read for a while since I heard his car drive in, my fingers frozen against the page. I am wondering if he is just going to ignore me and walk away or maybe something might come up.Noah walks in, his tie loosened, his gaze steady as he looks at me. There’s no immediate irritation in his expression, no sharp words waiting on his tongue. Just silence. "Welcome back," I say to him and he nods. Well, that's a first. "Are you busy?" His voice is even, unreadable.I blink, unsure if I imagined the question. I look down at the book I am holding - do I look in any way busy?! "No... why?"He exhales as if debating his next words. "Get dressed. We’re going out."I stare at him, waiting for a smirk, a sarcastic edge—some indication that this is another joke. But to my surprise, none comes. Instead, he shrugs off his sui
CHAPTER 49:DO YOU LOVE HIM? RACHEL'S POV.The café is warm, and the scent of freshly brewed coffee fills the air, but it does nothing to comfort me. My fingers tremble as I stir my drink, watching the milk swirl into the dark liquid before fading into a murky brown. My chest feels tight, my throat raw from holding back the sobs that threaten to break free. Emily sits across from me, her eyes soft with concern, waiting patiently for me to finish speaking. “I just... I just don’t know, Emily,” I murmur, my voice barely above a whisper. I wipe my tear-stained cheek. My fingers tighten around the warm cup as I blink rapidly, trying to stop more tears from slipping down my cheeks. “I couldn’t just ignore the call. Dorcas sounded so desperate. I was afraid that she was going to get hurt because of the screams. Elvis was wrecking things... I—I had to go. I had to help him. Am I at fault?"Emily sighs, reaching across the table to take my hand. Her grip is gentle but firm. “Rachel, list
CHAPTER 48: BACK TO SQUARE ONE.RACHEL'S POV.My eyes snap open immediately after my phone's alarm rang. I am not sure if I have properly gotten enough sleep, but my eyes are heavy, and so is my heart. I remain in the same position that I slept in - chest up and hands below my tummy, almost like the position of a dead one. "I don't want to move," I whisper to myself as I try to hold back a tear that is threatening to fall off my eyes. Is this probably the storm that Diva mentioned that I was going to face when reading my card? So, it wasn't fake after all.I push myself from the bed and head to the bathroom to shower. While brushing my teeth, I flashback to yesterday's event.I was still speaking with my colleagues when my phone's brightened screen caught my attention so I had to pay attention to it. I clutched my phone tightly as I stared at the message on the screen. It was an unknown number, crying for help with Elvis's name attached to it—it was enough to make my entire body te
CHAPTER 47: BIRTHDAY DISASTER (2)NOAH'S POVI slam the door shut behind me, my breath ragged as fury claws at my chest. The house is silent, but I do not mind it; I am used to that kind of life. I can’t even think straight. My mind is a hurricane, spinning out of control, each gust of anger fueled by the images of Rachel that had been sent to me.Marco looks up, startled. So he knows about the birthday party. He probably wasn’t expecting me home so early. Neither was I. Today was supposed to be my birthday. A day I never really cared about, but somehow, I let myself believe—for a brief moment—that it could be different. That maybe, just maybe, I could enjoy something normal. But I was a fool. “Sir? Why are you back this early?” Marco takes a cautious step forward.I ignore him, heading straight to the wine cabinet. My fingers tremble as I grab the first bottle of strong whiskey I can find. The cap clatters onto the marble countertop, forgotten as I pour myself a heavy drink. The a
CHAPTER 46: BIRTHDAY DISASTER (1)NOAH'S POV. Rachel walks toward me, carrying the birthday cake with both hands. The cheers died down instantly as they all expected my reaction. The flickering candlelight casts a soft glow on her face, and for a moment, everything else fades. She stops just in front of me, her voice gentle as she says, “Happy birthday, Mr. Noah.”It's been a while since I heard her call me that but I get why she did. I don’t respond right away. I just look at her, at the sincerity in her eyes. Then, with a slow breath, I close my eyes and make a wish—though I have no idea what to wish for. Maybe peace. Maybe clarity. Maybe something I’ll never have. I don't know. It never actually works. It's just a facade. When I open my eyes, I blow out the candles. The room erupts in cheers and applause. The sound is loud, yet strangely distant, like I’m underwater. I nod slightly, forcing a small smile, not because I’m comfortable with this, but because I recognize their
CHAPTER 45: SURPRISE BIRTHDAY FROM WIFEYNOAH'S POVI jolt awake, my entire body drenched in sweat, my breath ragged as I struggle to shake off the remnants of my nightmare. The darkness of my room offers no comfort, the dim glow of the bedside lamp casting long shadows on the walls. My heart pounds erratically as the echo of a child’s terrified screams still rings in my ears.I swallow hard, forcing myself to sit up. "Not again," I mumble helplessly as I try to gain control of my senses again. Leaning forward, I rest my head on my lap, my hands gripping the sheets as I try to calm down a bit. Even with the air conditioning humming in the background, the cool air does nothing to ease the clammy heat enveloping me. I stay in that position for a moment, trying to slow my breathing, but the weight in my chest refuses to dissipate.Eventually, I reach for the drawer beside my bed, pulling it open with shaking hands. That is my last option right now.My fingers close around a familiar
CHAPTER 44: PREPARATION.RACHEL'S POV "Wait, what?" I blink at Liam, utterly baffled. "Noah’s birthday is next week?"Liam smirks, leaning back against the counter like he’s just delivered the most important news of the century. "That’s right, Mrs. Sinclair. Your dear husband’s special day is right around the corner, and lucky for you, I’m here to spill the beans."I gape at him, feeling a mix of excitement and disbelief. "Why am I just hearing about this now?"Liam stretches lazily, his grin widening. "Because your husband is a cryptic, brooding man who doesn’t exactly throw confetti at the thought of birthdays. Why do you even think he is going to open his mouth and tell you about it?"I cross my arms, narrowing my eyes at him. Well, he is right. "And you’re telling me this now because…?" "What do you mean by that? Do you mean that you would have preferred if I kept it away from you?"I quickly shake my head, "No, not at all. I didn't mean that. I apologize if my words sound
CHAPTER 43: YOU ARE BLUSHING.RACHEL'S POVIt has been a week since I arrived at the house with Noah. Surprisingly, things have been going well between us. He hasn’t been as cold, and while he still keeps his distance, there’s a certain ease between us now that wasn’t there before. It feels...different.On this particular Saturday, I prepare to leave for an outing. I had promised Emily to come and see her when I came back from the event. As I make my way through the house, I ask Marco if he has seen Noah. Before leaving, I decide that it is best to let Noah know since I didn't speak about wanting to leave the house earlier this morning. "He's in the guest room with someone," Marco informs me. I pause, wondering if it’s even necessary to interrupt him just to inform him about my plans. Would he even care? But something inside me urges me to go, so I do. I find myself standing outside the guest room door. Taking a deep breath, I knock and push it open.As I step into the guest room,
CHAPTER 42: LET ME KISS YOU. RACHEL'S POV.I went to bed last night with mixed emotions, I couldn't even say anything. Noah didn't come to the bedroom last night. I have no idea where he has spent some nights sleeping in. My sleep wasn't that great because of the burden in my night.Waking up this morning is nothing but a pain in my neck. I feel like everything happened because of me. As I dress up, I wonder how my colleagues are going to react to me. Will they stop talking to me? A huge sigh escapes my lips as I weakly sit back on my bed. "Why is all this happening to me? Can I just go a week without feeling this much pressure?" I mumble. I really do not feel like making an appearance, but today is the last day, so I can't bail out now. I have no choice.I step out, and a little part of me is scared about what is likely to happen to me, the cold shoulders that I am going to receive, and other reactions.I get to the kitchen and I meet Beatrice speaking with the girls. They soon
CHAPTER 41: YOU ARE FIRED.RACHEL'S POV "What the hell are you even insinuating?" I shout at Sandra as I can not seem to control my anger anymore. "What?" she looks at me innocently as if she isn't the one brewing the storm. "I am just saying the truth." "Do you know you can get into trouble for saying all of these if you don't have any evidence to back it up?" Beatrice reminds her. "Why should I provide evidence when she can deny it all with her life and her family's? More like swearing. I believe in the active power of swearing so she should swear that she hasn't slept with the boss once. Let her do so."I am on the verge of crying as I watch Sandra continue to belittle my effort and insult me. She has never come for me in a full-blow proportion before. Of course, I knew she didn't like me from the start that I won the best hardworking staff with her going second, but still, she has always maintained her lane, and so have I.I can't even open my mouth to defend myself be
