Author’s POV Janette couldn’t believe what just came out of Lucas' mouth. She glared at him, her eyes literally spitting fire. “Let go of me right now!” she ordered but Lucas shook his head. He felt like if he left her, he wouldn’t see her ever again. He wasn’t ready to lose her anymore. He has suffered enough trying to find her and is still suffering for everything that happened. “I can’t let you go, Janette. Please, let’s forget about the past and start over.” he pleaded and Janette couldn’t believe how heartless he was. After everything, he expects her to forget? Forget? That was not happening! Janette pushed him away and moved back. “Did I hear you correctly? You expect me to forget everything, act like it never happened and start over?” she snickered as she stared at him with a scowl on her face. “Do I look like a fool to you? What do you take me for?” she snapped at him, fighting back the curses she desperately wanted to rain on him. She was so pissed; so pissed that she wanted to hit him badly. “Janette, please,” he tried to touch her but her hands met with his cheeks, slapping him hard on the face. She had wanted to control herself but this was too much. She couldn’t take it anymore. His pleadings only added to her anger. “Incase you have forgotten, let me remind you of what you did to me. I won’t mention the rest, but I will mention the one that hurt me deeply. I was bleeding, Lucas, I was fucking bleeding and you asked me to plead to death!” she yelled, her tears falling now. “I barely escaped a miscarriage. Even after that I told you about my pregnancy, hoping that would change your mind and make you love me again, but you called me a liar and abused me as well; you still went ahead to divorce me. Now I am back and you’re here babbling nonsense! Do you know how much I suffered to get here? I doubt it,” she sniffled and wiped her tears. “I don’t want to see you ever again. You are dead to me, Lucas. Everything ended six years ago, so I’d appreciate it if you leave me the hell alone.” she snapped and got into her car, leaving Lucas standing with his hands on his cheeks, his heart aching badly. He was so hurt he felt like his heart was being ripped apart. After she drove off, he released a long breath. He wondered what he was going to do to make Janette forgive him. He knew he had done numerous things to her in the past and he was ready to make amends. Now that she wasn’t ready to forgive him, he had to look for ways to win her heart all over again. *** Janette tried to calm herself down as she drove out of the school premises. She didn’t want to drive angry and also wanted to avoid Ethan seeing her angry as well. The little boy was very inquisitive and he would demand to know why her mood was ruined. Ethan watched his mum closely from the backseat. Janette might try hiding her emotions but he was a smart kid. He could see through her facade. “Mommy,” he called and Janette cleared her throat before humming. “Who is that man you were speaking with? Is he my daddy?” he asked and Janette was shocked. She cleared her throat. “He is no one.” she answered but he was not satisfied with her response. “Mommy, you told me that if we came here, I would see daddy but you don’t want to show me who he is.” he complained, his expression turning sour. Janette’s grip on the steering wheel tightened and she sucked in a breath. “Ethan, I’ve always told you that Liam is your—” “Mommy, I call him uncle Liam. How can Uncle Liam be my daddy?” his adorable face contorted into a cute frown. “Mommy will get married to uncle Liam and he will automatically become your daddy. That’s what I meant when I said that I would show your daddy to you when we get here.” she explained, hoping to make him forget about this issue but the little dude was a persistent and smart fellow. He snorted. “I am not a fool, Mommy, so don’t think you can twist my brain. If you marry uncle Liam, he becomes my stepdaddy. That man who came to build blocks with me today looks like me. I think he is my daddy.” Janette couldn’t believe this boy. How on earth did he learn to say all these things? She knew her son was smart, but sometimes, he says things she finds hard to believe are coming from a five year old. “Ethan, you shouldn’t talk to strangers. Because he looked like you didn't make him your father. And what did I tell you about making friends with people Mommy isn’t comfortable with?” she asked and he took in his bottom lip. “I am sorry, Mommy. He seemed nice and offered to play with me, that’s why.” he explained himself and Janette sighed. “We will talk about this later, okay?” she smiled at him through the rear view mirror and he nodded cutely before looking down at his hands. When they got home, he ran into his room and she sat on a couch in the living room with her legs crossed as her thoughts drifted to what happened today. She knew keeping Ethan away from his father was not the best thing to do as he needed that intimacy with his biological father, but what was she supposed to do when his father was a complete jerk, who almost ruined her life? She was grateful to have found solace in Liam, who she knew wanted the best for her, and he would come to marry her soon, so what was she supposed to do? Forget about Liam and run into the arms of the man that abandoned her? She scoffed and shook her head. That was not going to happen. She would just have to make Ethan see that Liam was the best father figure he needed. She hoped the little boy would forget about Lucas soon. If he doesn’t, she was ready to make him. She knew she was being impulsive by doing this, but she wanted to protect her son from a monster like Lucas. If Lucas could hurt her, there was no doubt that he would hurt Ethan as well.Hey, lovely readers, Thanks for choosing my book. 7. Lucas sat in his office, his mind a rollercoaster of thoughts. Ever since his encounter with Janette, he had been finding it hard to think straight. He would zone out at intervals, and his best friend, Alan could do nothing but watch him. “You do know sulking and getting lost in your world wouldn’t bring her back, right?” Alan tapped Lucas, who sucked in a breath. “I have pleaded, Alan. I pleaded with her to forgive me, but she acts like I don’t even exist.” he replied and Alan merely shook his head. “You need to see things from her own perspective, dude. Do you have any idea the weight of what she went through? She could have gone through emotional trauma. Who knows whether she even suffered depression? She left the city and is back now after making a name for herself. Do you have any idea what she had to endure to come this far? You don’t expect her to run into your arms simply because you apologized.” Alan explained. Lucas thought about his words. “You might be right,
8. Janette rushed into the school and headed for Ethan's class immediately. The teacher had explained to her that during lunch, he had made a friend with one of his mates. A little girl tried opening the jar of peanut butter her mum gave her but couldn't and Ethan offered to help. Immediately he opened it, he passed out. She barged in, panting as she used her eyes to search for the teacher, but she was nowhere to be found. “He is in the school infirmary, ma'am.” The teacher, who was there to watch over the children, informed her, and she nodded, rushing to the infirmary at once. When she got there, they took her directly to Ethan's ward, and tears rolled down her cheeks when she entered and saw that he was asleep. “You have nothing to worry about. We've been able to stabilize him. He should be up any minute from now.” Mrs. Johnson said. Janet sighed, running her hands through her hair. “I put it in his file that he was allergic to peanut butter. Didn't you go through it?”
9. When they got home, she quickly rushed to the drawer where she usually kept his medications and crouched down to his level. "Whatever you do, do not take peanut butter again, okay?" she said as she gave him water to drink before slipping the drug into his mouth. After swallowing it, he nodded at her with a cute smile on his face. She patted his head and carried him in her arms as she took him to his room. "Get some sleep, okay? You'll be fine when you wake up." she smiled and gently placed him on the bed. She removed his shoes and uniform and covered him with the duvet. Ethan snuggled into the duvet with a sigh. Her phone rang and she took it. A smile found its way to her lips when she saw that it was Liam calling and it was even a video call. "It's Liam calling," she announced and Ethan quickly sat up as she took the call. Liam's face lit up the minute his face came on the screen. "Uncle!" Ethan exclaimed, causing him to chuckle softly. "Aren't you a cutie? Why a
10. NEXT DAY… That morning, Sophia was already at the house, ready to take care of Ethan. She smiled as she rang the doorbell. “Coming!” Janette yelled from the kitchen, rinsed her hands with water and cleaned it before leaving to get the door. When she opened the door and saw Sophia, her eyes widened. “Sophia,” she called, shock evident on her face. She wasn’t expecting her to come this early. “You’re here early.” Sophia smiled. “Yes, good morning, ma’am. It’s my first day of work at your place. First impressions matter, don’t you think?” she asked, and Janette grinned. “I guess,” she moved aside. “Come in,” she said, and. Sophia nodded before walking into the house. “Where’s Ethan?” she asked, looking around. “He is still asleep in his room. You could go wake him up.” Janette suggested, and she nodded, leaving for Ethan’s room immediately. Janette checked the wall clock. It was just a few minutes past six. ‘Is Sophia this diligent?’ she wondered, and glanced at
11. Janette burst through the doors of the hospital and Rosa rushed to her the minute she saw her. She had gotten ready as quickly as she could. “Ma’am,” Rosa called as Janette approached her. “Where is he?” Janette asked, her expression unreadable. “I asked him to wait in your office.” Rosa answered and Janette nodded before storming to her office. When she got there, she threw the doors open, alerting Lucas of her presence. He stood to his feet and walked up to her, a small smile on his face. Janette didn’t return his smile, instead she looked like she couldn’t wait to deal the hell with him right now. “Good morning, Jane.” he greeted with a warm smile that only made her sick to the stomach. “What the heck are you doing here?” she asked, her face contorting into a frown. She sounded so harsh and icy that Lucas didn’t know when he shuddered. He cleared his throat. “I came to see you.” he answered and she raised an eyebrow. “You came to see me? What for?” she asked.
12. Lucas returned to his office and took a seat. He swayed in his chair and heaved a deep breath. His eyes gazed blankly at the wall as he thought about Janette's words. He knew he had hurt her deeply, and he didn't blame her for feeling the way she did. He deserved her anger, her hatred, and her resentment. But he couldn't give up. He couldn't lose hope. He had to make things right, not just for himself, but for their son, Ethan. He wanted to be a good father and a good partner as well. He wanted to show her the love he had deprived her of in the past. Lucas took a deep breath and stood up from his chair. He walked over to the window and stared out at the city. He sighed as he watched people go about their daily lives. He returned to his chair and took a seat. His personal assistant walked into the office with a smile and bowed slightly. “Sir, you have a meeting with the board of directors in fifteen minutes. They will be at the conference room anytime soon.” Lucas sighed
13. THE CAFETERIA… Sophie sat at the cafeteria, her tray of food in front of her, but she hadn't touched it. She was so lost in thoughts that she didn't know when her colleague and best friend, Mia, sat in front of her. Mia watched Sophie for a while, wondering what was wrong with her. When she couldn't take how pitiful Sophie was looking, she tapped her, causing her to flinch. “What is wrong with you? You haven't even touched your food. Are you sick?” she asked, but Sophie shook her head. “Then what is wrong with you?” Sophie sighed and looked around to make sure nobody's attention was on them before speaking up. “It's Mr. Lucas.” she answered and Mia sighed. “I should have known he's the only reason you can sit here, lost in deep thoughts and not touching your food,” she rolled her eyes and Sophie frowned at her. “What is up with him this time, Sophie?” she asked. Sophie adjusted in her seat and looked at Mia, her expression sad. “Mr. Lucas doesn't seem happy lately, an
14. “No way! Are you serious?” Janette asked, her heart literally bubbling with joy. This was the best news she has heard today. Liam chuckled from the other end. “I can’t wait to finally see you, Jane.” She blushed, her face beaming with smiles. “I can’t wait to see you too. I bet Ethan will be thrilled to hear this news,” she said and there was no reply from the other end. “When are you coming? I need to get everything ready and prepare your favorite meal of course.” Liam hummed. “I’ve missed your cooking, Jane. I simply can’t wait,” he said and she chuckled. “I’ll be coming in two days.” Janette couldn’t contain her joy. “I can’t wait.” They talked for a while before hanging up and Janette couldn’t help but smile throughout the day. She had to even get off work early so she could pick Ethan up from school, take him to his favorite cupcake shop and allow him to have fun. * “Mummy!” Ethan exclaimed the minute he saw her walk through the door. He rushed into her arms and she pe
057.Liam made to walk to where Lucas stood but Janette blocked his path. “Don't, Liam,” she warned. “You don't have to start a fight as soon as you see him.”“Yeah, that's why I need to know what he is doing in our house. Technically, he doesn't belong here and isn't supposed to be here.” Liam complained.“Calm down,” Janette held his hand. “Lucas just helped me bring Ethan home from school, that's all.”“That's all?” Liam asked, his eyes narrowing at Lucas. “And I saw him holding your hand? And you didn't even bother saying anything about it.”Janette bit her lower lip. “It's not what you think it is,” she sighed. “You just got back and need rest. Don't bother yourself with this.”Lucas said nothing and just watched them. He wondered why Liam didn't ask about Ethan and just went straight to talking trash about him? He shrugged and decided to forget about it. That wasn't his cup of tea. Besides, Ethan was HIS son. Liam glared at Lucas. “Just get out of this place. Nobody wants to se
056.When they returned to the car, Fiona turned to Lucas with a smile on her face. “Thank you so much for helping Ethan and Amaya out. I'll leave with Amaya now,” she smiled softly at the little girl. “Amaya, say bye bye to Ethan now.”“Mommy, can I go home with Ethan? Mr. Lucas is around and he always gets us chocolates.” Amaya smiled cutely.Lucas drew in a breath. Unfortunately, he didn't get any chocolates today. Fiona quickly noticed and smiled. She had rushed here the minute she got a call from Sophia as well. She had asked Sophia to watch Amaya as well.“Oh, sweetie, let's go freshen up first. You'll come see Ethan after that, okay?” Amaya was shocked by how soft her mother sounded but she nodded with a smile. Fiona smiled at Lucas one more time before turning to leave but came face to face with Janette.Janette, who was initially shocked to see Fiona come, wondered if the woman had changed. “Fiona, didn't expect to see you here. I guess you aren't that hard hearted afterall.
055.Janette dropped the cards and sprung to her feet. “I'll be right there.”“What happened?” Lucas asked, his expression filled with worry.“Sophia just called to tell me Ethan was hurt by a bully in school. She went to pick him up and saw that he had a bandage on his face. I gotta go!”Aunt Maryanne gasped. “A bully? In kindergarten?”Lucas was annoyed. “Let's go. I'll drive.” he said.Janette shook his head. “There's no need for that. I can go by myself.” she tried to rush out but Lucas grabbed her wrist.“Right now you're panicking. You aren't in the right state of mind and I can't let you go into that road driving, okay?” Janette seemed to calm down a bit and nodded. She had no choice anyway. “Fine. Let's go.” she rushed out of the ward.Aunt Maryanne gave Lucas a thumbs up before he rushed after Janette. As they dashed out of the ward, Janette couldn’t shake the feeling of dread that gripped her heart. She was already envisioning the worst. Sophia had been vague on the phone,
054.“You're okay and good to go, Auntie.” Janette smiled at Aunt Maryanne, who couldn't help rejoicing but then she looked at Lucas, who was seated on the couch. He had come to pick her up.Aung Maryanne sighed. “Oh my! Oh!” she placed her hand on her head.Janette raised an eyebrow. “Auntie, what is wrong?” “What's wrong, Aunt?” Lucas asked.Aunt Maryanne groaned and plopped down on the bed. “My head is aching seriously and my legs are all wobbly. I don't think it's a good idea to discharge me today. Oh!” Lucas was confused. Where the heck did the sudden pain come from? But when Aung Maryanne winked at him and subtly gestured for him to play along, he nodded. “Oh my gosh, Aunt, thosd migraines are back again? I can't believe this!” he feigned shock and panic.Janette was confused as she stared at two of them. “What has come again? What's going on?” she asked, her expression filled with worry.Lucas sighed. “Aunt Maryanne usually has occasional migraines that make her legs go all w
053.Mia's eyes widened when she saw Bella running out of the place wailing, her body drenched in dirty water. The other employees who had no idea what had happened watched Bella in awe. Sophie returned with a satisfactory smile on her face and sat down with a chuckle. “What.Did.You.Do?” Mia asked, stressing every word. Sophie glanced at her perfectly manicured nails and smiled before looking up at Mia. “I taught how to keep her mouth shut and not say dirt to my face of course.” she replied. “Oh my God, Mia, you should have seen her face. She was like a lion earlier, but when she saw that I was about to beat her up, she began acting like a cute little kitten. That didn't fool me. I made sure I put her in her place.”Mia shook her head, a look of displeasure on her face. “You shouldn't have done that, Sophie,” she said and Sophie rolled her eyes. “Even if you wanted to do anything to her, you could have waited until work hours are over. Don't you know there are security cameras here
052.HARRY CORP“I’m serious, Mia. It’s definitely his ex-wife.” Sophie folded her arms with a frown on her face. She had been angry that Lucas wasn’t spending much time in the office like he used to anymore, and she was darn sure it’s because of Janette.Mia rolled her eyes as she looked into the magazine in her hand. “Why is that your problem? If he chooses to spend most time with his ex-wife, shouldn’t you be happy for him? I mean they might reconcile, and he would finally be happy.”Sophia glared at Mia. “What the heck did you just say? Can you hear yourself speak?” she groaned and facepalmed. “Why should I be happy because they might reconcile? I don’t want them to reconcile, Mia. If the go, I’ll lose him for sure.”“Hello, he was never yours to begin with.” Mia scoffed. “Look, Sophie, there are plenty of guys out there who would definitely like you once they set their eyes on you. You’re a beautiful woman. You shouldn’t be thinking of ruining someone else’s chance with his ex-wi
051.Janette walked into her office and closed the door. She rested her back on it, her hand running through her hair when she recalled what happened with Lucas at the hallway. She couldn't believe it. Just a word and her touch from him made her body react in ways they hadn't in a very long time. He didn't even need to work hard to get a reaction from her. And yet, she sleeps on the same bed with Liam everyday and feels nothing."Shit," she facepalmed. This wasn't good. Her eyes caught a bag...something like a shopping bag on her table and her brows furrowed. That wasn't there when she was in the office a few minutes ago. She walked to the table and took the bag. 'For Doc. Jane.' was written on a paper attached to it.Janette wondered who gave it to her. She opened it and flowers were the first thing she saw. She picked the bouquet of roses, a smile gracing her face. Could Liam have gotten them for her?She dropped the flower and brought out a box of perfume. "Chocolate perfume, my
050.Lucas stopped in front of them. Rosa smiled at him and he nodded at her. She cleared her throat. "Uh, I'll excuse you two." she quickly walked away before Janette would ask her to stay.Janette shut her eyes tight and facepalmed. "What are you doing here, Lucas?" she asked, her tone softer than she intended.Lucas smiled and sat down, facing her. "Have you forgotten, Doc?" he asked, his tone formal which made Janette arch a brow. "I have an Aunt in your hospital. I came to see her. She's doing wonderfully well, and I wanted to thank the genius doctor who made it happen."Janette had no idea why he was being so formal with her. She knew she should be happy that he was at least doing that, but she had no idea why she felt weird and strange when he did it. Rosa couldn't be correct, right? With a sigh, she looked at Lucas who smiled at her. "You shouldn't have bothered, Mr. Harry," she said, a smile playing on her lips at his expression. Good. He wanted to be formal, right? Two can
049.J.H HOSPITAL "So, how did it go? You said you we're gonna tell me all about it today." Janette smiled at Rosa during their lunch break. Knowing the kind of person Rosa was, Janette really wanted to know how it went. Maybe-just maybe-Rosa would finally find someone who loves her, and who she loves back as well.Rosa cleared her throat, her eyes darting around the cafeteria. She wondered how much of what happened she should share, especially now that she didn't want Janette to know that her date was Alan yet. "To be honest," she began, taking a sip from her juice. "I really enjoyed the date. He took me to a fancy restaurant, we talked about some things, talked about college and our recent state. After that, we went star gazing. The sky was alive with stars last night." she smiled.Janette watched her closely, a smile playing on her lips. "It was, wasn't it?" she asked."Yeah," Rosa answered. "After everything, he brought me back home and we said our goodbyes. I actually had fun, b
