Maya’s pov
I dared not peer out of the pantry door while the Alpha’s family dined. Making myself invisible was the best option for me. For reasons unknown, they loathed me. I mean, it would have been fine if they just hated me and left me alone. I didn’t mind not having a cosy home or having to do all the work around the pack house, but the torture they subjected me to was unbearable. With a deep sigh escaping my lips I lifted my shirt and traced my fingertips on the deep scar that ran across my abdomen. I winced. It was a bitter reminder of the time the alpha’s daughter stabbed me with a silver dagger. Thankfully, I survived because she rushed me to the hospital. Perhaps she was scared of being found guilty of murder. Anyway, I forgave her. I thought it would end the years-long hatred she harboured in her heart for me, but, oh boy, was I wrong. The scar no longer hurt, but the emotional trauma I suffered was unforgettable. A shudder ran down my spine as the memories flooded back to me. I bit my lower lip. Crying was a waste of time and energy, and to be honest, my tears had dried up a long time ago. Yet the memories made me wince. Among all the scars and bruises on my body, that one was the ugliest. At least it wasn’t on an exposed part. I liked to wear baggy clothes that covered most of my body, simply because it was easier to hide the unpleasant contusions on my pale skin. Not that anyone would care about it, but because I didn’t like to be reminded of my inability to protect myself against them. “Maya! Where the fuck are you? My daughter needs pickles!” My heart raced when I heard Luna’s miffed voice. I quickly lowered my shirt and looked around the pantry. A frown quickly wrinkled my brows when I failed to spot them within the first few seconds. Being late would land me in immense trouble. Even a simple task like that had to be perfect if I didn’t want to be punished. After all, even the omegas in our pack were more privileged than I was. “Maya? You better respond when your Luna calls you!” The hair on the back of my neck rose when the Alpha’s voice thundered in the air. I gulped. “Y…yes Alpha.” My voice quivered. I was sure I was already in trouble. Relief washed over me when my eyes fell on the pickle jar. I quickly stood on my tiptoes and reached out for the jar of pickles on the top shelf, but I guess I had already pissed them off. The door swung open and I sucked a breath in when I heard her stomping towards me. I knew what was coming. Even after years of being subjected to their harsh blows and heart wrenching words, I never quite got used to it. A strong pair of hands grabbed my throat and snatched the jar from my hands. I froze when I saw her fiery eyes glaring at me. My Luna was furious. “How dare you ignore me while you respond to my mate? I am the Luna of this pack. The most important female, and you better respect me, you leech,” she snarled into my face. Her garlic breath almost made me gag, but I didn’t. I held it in with all the strength I could muster. “Y… yes, Luna,” I whispered. Her eyes narrowed. “Louder. I want to hear it in your voice.” I swallowed the lump in my throat and tried my best to compose myself. It was hard to speak with her nails digging into my neck, but I knew I had to speak up if I wanted to live. “Yes, Luna.” I was glad that she released me. I sucked in several breaths. It wasn’t the first time I found myself in a similar situation, and yet each time it reminded me I was a nobody. I guess I would never get used to the abuse. “Whatever,” she huffed. “My daughter needs this. Don’t you know that she is pregnant? Oh, and you better not make a mistake tomorrow night. I want all the dishes to be perfect. All the alphas and their families will be here by six, and I want you to be done by five at the latest. The omegas will serve the dishes. I want you gone. You being there will ruin the pack’s image.” I nodded my head. “Yes, Luna. I will lock myself in the pantry.” Her lips pulled into a grim line as she gave a subtle nod of her head. Relief washed over me when she walked away. At least this time I didn’t have to suffer one of her mean punches. As soon as the door closed behind her, I walked over to the folded sheets I had left on the side. I picked up the cold pillow and hugged it, burying my face. It offered me no warmth, but that was the most comfort I ever found in the pack house. Yeah, it was the pantry and I slept there. The alpha’s family thought I didn’t deserve a room in the omega’s quarters. It was funny how they made me do all their cooking since they despised me so much. Didn’t they know I could poison them if I wanted to? But that wasn’t something I would do. Perhaps they were right. I was too timid or just too weak. A sigh escaped my lips. I would have to cook for a mass crowd the following day. It was their son’s eighteenth birthday, and he probably would find his mate. That was why they were making such a fuss about it. My lips pressed together when I thought about my birthday. It was just a few months away. My hope was to escape this hell once I turned eighteen. I hoped that my mate would arrive and rescue me from this place. I couldn’t care less if he was an omega or an unranked wolf. Heck, I didn’t give a damn if fate mated me with a rogue. My heart's desire was to be free.Hello there. Thank you for checking this one out. Maya isn't weak, just unfortunate. Add it to your library to find out more about her and her life. Oh, and please a comment or two. Pretty please. *puppy eyes*
Maya’s povHe slid to the side and looked at me, a tiny smile tugging at the corner of his lips. “I get you,” he said. “But you do realise that you already might be carrying my pup, right? Remember the time you went into heat? Remember how we didn’t use protection?”I sucked in a breath. He was right. Protection was the last thing on my mind when I went into heat. I reached out to touch my stomach. “Yeah,” I whispered, a sudden fear gripping my heart. I didn’t want to get pregnant with a war brewing on the horizon. I couldn’t help but think of how my mom was pregnant with me when they were attacked. She wasn’t able to shift or fight back. If she did, perhaps the outcome would have been different. I looked at my mate, furrowing my eyebrows. “What are we going to do? I don’t want to risk anything.”His lips parted. Perhaps he sensed my fear; he pulled me into his embrace, allowing me to breathe into his chest. Inhale… exhale…I clung onto him like my life depended on it, basking in
Maya's povWe sent some spies to keep an eye on the abandoned mansion the rogues used as their retreat. As Roger had mentioned, we expected Moon and his girl to return eventually. As days passed by, we decided to make it easier for us to monitor the location by installing CCTV cameras. More groups of warriors were sent to the area to capture more rogues. Roger was a great help. He wanted to save his sister from the living the life of a loner, but that could only work if she and her family were ready to accept our pack as theirs. While some of them screamed bloody murder in the dungeons, some of them calmed down after speaking with Roger and other wolves who joined Silverstone. They had a long way to go and I was willing to give them time to adjust, but without their desire to cooperate, there was only so much I could do.Those who wanted to join the pack quickly submitted to us and accepted me as their queen. Roger worked hard for especially her sister’s family to accept us and his h
Maya’s pov“Where are the pups?” I asked. “They could be lying,” Vince warned as he gestured the warriors to check every room in the mansion. “No, we aren’t. We maybe loners, but we also have families. Some of us really trying to live better, you know,” one of the rogues said. “His family has their own house, but mine lives here. It is late and my mate will be pissed if they woke the pups up.”My lips twitched. “Why live in the wilderness while you can join a pack? It is safer and more stable that way. The pups can have a better future and access to proper education,” I said. He scoffed. “Why would I go back to a place that didn’t want me in the first place? Well, my father was a criminal. I get that. He backstabbed his alpha and was executed. But why did they feel the need to banish our family? I was young, but I am pretty sure my mother was harmless.”I raised a brow. “How long ago was this?”He shrugged his shoulders. “I don’t know… I was five when all that happened. My sister w
Maya’s povNo one liked my idea of helping the vampires find their lost moonstone. I had a feeling that that was the only way we could put an end to the centuries-old animosity between them and the wolves. Regardless, I let it go once everyone including several alphas and our betas, voiced their opinions. Vince, however, didn’t entirely disagree with me, although I bet he had second thoughts about lending our arch enemies a hand. So that was that. All the packs prepared for war while I kept pondering where the moonstone could have gone. If the wolves weren’t involved, it must have been the handiwork of the witches. I found myself thinking about it whenever I found a few minutes to myself during my busy schedule. I truly wanted to put an end to the rivalry. Without it, we wouldn’t have real peace. The vampires would continue to attack and we wolves would have to counterattack or defend ourselves. It would be a constant fight for survival. I sipped on my coffee mug while sitting on th
Maya’s povI was not disappointed with the library. It was gigantic and I loved it. But we didn’t have the whole day to explore the whole place unfortunately, so we went straight to the history section. “Where is that book? The history of werewolves…” mumbled Nancy, as she scrutinized through the neatly packed stacks of books. She seemed to be focused on finding something in particular while I was mesmerized by the number of books in front of me. It was so satisfying. I bet it had all the books by my favourite author. Heck, had I found out about this place sooner, I wouldn't have left it.“So many books,” I whispered, awestruck. I tried to peer at the fictional section, but looked away. That could wait. This needed our urgent attention. “Yeah,” she muttered as she led me deeper into the library. “But we better focus. These are the history books…” she mumbled, carefully studying the titles and the covers of the thick, dust covered books. “I am looking for one specific book…” I sighe
Maya’s povOur requests for an appointment went unanswered. Neither Alpha Gerret nor Rachel responded to our emails and our attempts to speak with them on the phone was rather unprofessional. That was rather unprofessional in my opinion. So we did what we had to. Vince and I prepared a squadron of warriors to accompany us when we visited their pack. We looked like we were going for war, but we had to take every precaution to protect ourselves. As expected, the guards didn’t allow us to enter. Even after formally requesting we were told to leave. Alpha Gerret and his family refused to see us.“We didn’t travel all the way for nothing. If the matter wasn’t extremely important, we wouldn’t have come here. As you can see, we aren’t alone. The elders who served the royal family are here with us. You must allow us inside,” Vince demanded, glaring into the guard’s eyes. He didn’t look like he would back off and I found that so fucking hot. Holding back the smirk curling on my lips, I also s
