Elaine.

I was shaking as I scolded myself for being so stupid. I thought that coming to steal here would earn me so much money and I'd be out of this life for good, but things didn’t seem to be going at my favor. Maybe if I hadn’t been caught, things would’ve been better. I would’ve contacted old colleagues and made a great deal. But then, the guilt still stabbed my chest in ways that I didn’t like to admit. If only I hadn’t involved myself. If only I just found another job. It wasn’t my fault! If I delay any longer my sister could lose her life and that was something I wasn’t even labeling as a possibility.

I could hear the guards make fun of me and say how much I’ve ruined my life by messing with “the boss”. Who the heck was this guy anyway? In the files Phoebe brought, it stated that the boss was a woman but the man intimidating me was proving that point wrong.

I removed my face from my palms, where it was buried, before looking at the door. He had been gone for a while and I got anxious the more I waited. In the past, I had never gotten caught and this was a whole new experience for me. The thought of going to prison almost made me nauseous and what made me feel worse was explaining it all to Audrey.

The door opened and my heart skipped a beat. I sat up straight and let out a heavy sigh as I prepared to strike a deal or something with this man.

“You can leave,” he said to the guards and they exchanged looks before leaving. He put his hands in his pockets and looked at me closely. “You look like you want to tell me something.”

“I’m sorry,” I said. “I’ll never repeat this so, please don’t call the cops on me. I was desperate. My sister needs help and I wanted fast cash.”

“For someone who seems so concerned about her sister, you’re not a good example, are you? Does your sister even know what you do?”

I pressed my lips in anger and embarrassment. “I’m so sorry. I’ll do anything, please.”

He hesitated. “What’s your name? Your real name?”

“Elaine. Elaine Jones.”

“Age?”

I hesitated, wondering where the sudden questioning came from. “T-twenty-six.”

He nodded. “Is stealing your job? Do you work with someone?”

“No. I own a small flower shop and I don’t work with a team when I do such.”

“Do you do these stunts regularly?”

“No.”

He walked closer to me and leaned down, his right hand resting on the arm of my chair. “Since you’re a dealer, let’s make a deal.”

“What do you mean?”

“Lets say I believe the whole story about how you want to save your sister. Wouldn’t it be better to have money afterwards as well?”

“Where are you going with this?”

“Yes or no?”

I hesitated but met his eyes. “Yes.”

“Marry me.”

“What!?” I exclaimed in shock and mild annoyance. “I’m not going to give you my body.”

He rolled his eyes after my outburst and said, “I don’t want your body. At least, not in a sexual way. I want a marriage.”

“Isn’t this plot twist too much? I’m so confused.”

“I’m having my own troubles and you need money. Marry me to sort my troubles and I’ll give you cash to sort yours.”

“You want to buy me?”

He hummed. “Think of it as a job. After all, it’s a marriage of convenience.”

“No. I’m not interested in your offer.”

“Is that so?” He stood up straight and removed a card from a pocket inside his jacket before handing it to me. “Call me when you change your mind.”

I reluctantly received it and put it in the pocket of my white shirt without reading it. This man was definitely crazy and I was sure that a marriage to some rich psycho was not the answer.

I was released an hour after the party was done and when I arrived at the parking lot, I discovered that Phoebe left without me. I thought of walking to the nearest bus stop but it was a distance away and it wasn’t safe for a woman to be wandering about passed midnight. Begrudgingly, I pulled out my phone and called a taxi. As I waited, I kept thinking of how much cash I was going to waste on this.

After arriving home, I paid the driver and made my way inside the flower shop. Since this place was quite big, I sort of cut it in half. The front was a beautiful workplace while the back was a small home. It was cramped but it was better than sleeping on the street. If things had gone well, I would've been celebrating and making plans for all the money I would make. I was frustrated that everything was ruined because of me. The threatening tears stung my eyes but I held them back.

My phone vibrated and I removed it from my pocket before looking at the text that arrived.

“What took you so long? I was waiting forever,” it read and I glared at my screen as though David could feel how angry I was.

“I did what you wanted,” I texted back, “now let’s go our separate ways and never speak again.”

After I sent it, I blocked his number and threw the phone on the bed. I noticed that the card was on my bed and figured that it might have fallen off when I got my phone. I picked it up and gave it a read.

“Zachery Dobre,” I read aloud and began to read his contact details and place of work. He really was the CEO, huh?

I put the card down and began to undress. The whole day was hectic and I was too sweaty for comfort. Zack’s offer kept going through my mind and I came to the conclusion that it was a ‘marry me or get arrested’ kind of deal. Sitting down on my bed, I got my phone and googled him. There wasn’t any bad or scandalous news about him but media could be silenced every now and then so I was skeptical. Giving my head a shake, I decided that this was an issue for another day and pulled on a towel before making my way to the bathroom.

~

It was a warm day today and business was doing better than usual. I felt like my trip to that party scored me some admirers. I was happy but anxious. Was this some kind of plot by Zack? Was he trying to show me how well my job could go before sending me to prison?

I gave myself a mental slap and grumbled, “Get a grip.”

“Excuse me, ma’am,” a woman, standing in front of the counter, greeted. “I’d like some sunflowers, please.”

“Sure. How much do you need?”

“I want to plant some in my backyard. I repainted my house and I feel like a yellow background would look great.”

I nodded. “That sounds like a great idea but I wouldn’t recommend sunflowers because of our climate. Marigolds and coreopsis are great flowers that are low maintenance. You can add cosmos or zinnias for a lovely mix of colors,” I explained and offered to show her the flowers.

My shop has never been this busy and it felt great that my new beginning was doing well. If only Audrey was here to see this, she would’ve been so excited. I stretched to lessen the ache in my back from all the bending and looked around at the empty spaces in the flowerbeds and where flowerpots were.

It was time to close up and after attending to the last customer, I turned the sign on the door around to show that the shop was closed. I began to clean up and neatly put things in order. Locking the door, I went to the back and laid on my bed before letting out a relieved sigh.

I got my phone and noticing that I had mail, I began to browse my emails. Most of them concerned the shop and one was from Mr. Fisher. I froze when a noticed one from the hospital and felt hesitant to read it. It felt like every time I found a reason to be happy, something was determined to snatch it away from me. I already had an idea of what it said and maybe rationality wasn’t the best route out.

I grabbed Zack’s card from the top of my drawer and called him. As soon as he picked up, I asked, “Is the deal still on?”

“You sure took your damn time. It’s been two weeks,” he said after a moment of silence.

I sighed. “I’ll marry you.”

He chuckled. “Of course, you will. Be at my office tomorrow before noon and look your best.”

“Before that, send ten thousand dollars to my account right now.”

“You don’t hesitate. I dislike women like you.”

Ignoring the sting of his words, I replied, “You’re the one who wants to marry me, Mr. Dobre.”

“Its done. Send your bank information,” with that he hang up and I did as he said.

Shortly, a message came and he did as I said, except he doubled the amount. It was as if he was saying, “You think ten thousand is too much for me? Jokes on you.”

Elaine. I looked at the address on the business card I was holding before looking at the tall building in front of me. Noble armor, the jewelry line that Zack owned, was more glamorous than I imagined. I looked at the time on my phone to double-check that I was on time. I walked into the building and made my way to the receptionist’s desk. “Excuse me,” I began and the man looked up at me with a smile. “Welcome,” he said. “Is there something you need help with?” “Ah, I’m looking for Mr. Dobre.” He paused and looked at me mild confusion. “Zack Dobre?” “Yes.” “Do you have an appointment?” “Not really. He told me to meet him before noon today. It’s only past nine so…” He cleared his throat and I felt awkward. “What’s your name?” “Elaine Jones.” “Give me a moment.” He picked up the telephone on the table and dialed some numbers before talking. I used this moment to look around and I still couldn’t believe how cool this place looked. The inside had a golden theme, just like the p

Elaine. “How about this?” I asked Zack as I twirled around in the short black, flared dress I was trying on. He hummed and looked at the pile of clothes he picked for me. “It’s great but you keep avoiding the clothes I chose for you.” I folded my arms. “The stuff you’ve chosen aren’t my style.” “But when you marry me, you’ll need to look classy ninety percent of the time you’re outside.” “My marriage to you shouldn’t be the death of my personality, Mr. Dobre.” “That’s why I’m letting you choose some clothes that you like and I think you’ve chosen enough.” “For someone so rich, you’re quite stingy.” I picked up a suit he chose and went into the changing room. Zack and I decided to go shopping this Saturday because I was supposed to meet his parents some day during the week. As expected of Mr. Blue eyes, we visited expensive stores and he picked most of the stuff, but shopping with him wasn’t as boring as I imagined. Elaine. I zipped up the zip on the right side of the dress I wore and patted it down. I had my hair and makeup done in the afternoon and I loved how I was looking. I rarely went for manicures because I felt like it was a waste of money but Zack clearly didn’t have a problem sending me money to pamper myself. Despite his distant personality, he was quite caring. Or maybe he didn’t want me to show up looking below his standards and embarrass him. That bastard. I wore a black sleeveless dress, that was immediately above my knees, with a silver necklace and short red heels. A small red bag hang on my shoulder and simple diamond earrings complimented my look. Giving myself one more look in the mirror, I gave myself words of encouragement and I felt like someone who would actually be Zack’s type. During the week, Zack sent an email telling me things I shouldn’t do in front of his parents and things that would make them think

Zack. I walked down the hall from the kitchen with a tall glass of strawberry juice in my hands. Everyone was somewhat isolating themselves tonight as it was silent with only the sounds of footsteps or the cool breeze that blew by every now and then. After the whole crying scene, Elaine wanted something to drink and insisted that I had to go get it. I sighed in annoyance at the memory. Did that woman not know how to say please? She basically kicked me out of my own room! Besides, we had maids roaming around. Why couldn't she send them instead? "Zack!" Levi called as he strolled over to me and I stopped walking. "I thought that you'd be meditating in your room as well." "Elaine seems drained so I got her a drink. It's her favourite," I lied. "You know, I didn't expect that the cause of your suspicious behavior was a woman. I'm impressed." He chuckled. "I wanted to say so on the table but the atmosphere wasn't right." "What's so impressive about that?" "Well, we all thought tha

Elaine. The soft rays of the morning sun shone into the dining room as everybody ate quietly. Unlike yesterday's atmosphere, today's was calm and almost peaceful. This looked like a beautiful setting but for one thing, Zack wasn't at the table. It was seven in the morning and being a Saturday, where could he have possibly gone? I felt like I was in a den of lions and Zack's mother was more than looking forward to tearing me from limb to limb. Didn't Zack understand that he was leaving me in a vulnerable position!? Everyone but me, seemed to be at ease. I watched everybody eat while I took a sip of my coffee every now and then. Levi kept stealing glances in my direction and it made the fact that the seat beside me was empty more obvious. Taking a gulp of my coffee, I tried to swallow down my irritation and looked over my shoulder at the door. "I hope that being around us without Za

Zack. I stood beside the bed as I waited for Elaine to dress up in the bathroom. I bought plenty of casual clothes and since we went shopping last time, I hoped that they were to her taste. I sighed, seeing that she was taking her time, but I guessed that I had something else to worry about. Why did she get so mad about her school? Had something happened that made her hate the topic? Did she find me offering to give her the education that she missed insulting? But what was so bad about that? Wouldn't others rejoice at such an opportunity? The more time I spent with Elaine, the more she confused me. She seemed to be the opposite of my expectations and did things I didn't think others would do. It was somewhat tiresome. The awkward air, that followed after the conversation we had earlier, was heavy and we just minded our own businesses in silence. After my shower, Elaine went in and it was starting to look like she wasn't planning on coming out. Walking towards the bathroom door, I

Zack. "That's all for today. The rest will be settled tomorrow so if anyone has any questions, state them now," I said as I leaned back into my chair. "Sir," one of the employees began, "we have two companies requesting to do next season's collection so, which company should we use concerning the production?" "The same one that did last year's winter and spring collection. Those people produced great results and we aren't in a position to start testing companies that we haven't worked with before." He nodded and scribbled something down in his notepad. Seeing that everything was settled, I dismissed the meeting and made my way to my office along with Mrs. Brooks, my assistant. Entering my office, I sat down and looked at the sky through the windows in the room. It was a little cloudy and cold today but it made sense, seeing that winter was closing in. We had to release our new collection at the beginning of December and I was proud that there was a lot of buzz concerning the new

Elaine. I woke up with a groan and stretched my arms above my head as my alarm rang next to the bed. The curtains were open and the brightness was annoying. Fully opening my eyes, I turned off the alarm and noticed that Zack wasn't in bed. In the two days that I've been living with him, I have never woken up earlier than him and I never find him home in the morning. I didn't mind it though because we were both busy. I already contacted some people about the redecoration and I couldn't help but feel estsctic about it. Since I moved out from my shop, that meant that there was more space at the back and having an influencail man like Zack helping me, I could already imagine myself reaching better heights. This deal was really letting me enjoy the benefits and I thought that maybe, just maybe, this could be a blessing in disguise. Sitting up, I ran my fingers through my bed head and sighed. Elaine. The bedroom was silent as Zack and I prepared for work. We had just taken a shower together and Zack was looking for what to wear in the walk-in closet while I stood in front of the mirror and admired my reflection. I was in a really good mood this morning. I wore a black turtleneck that was tucked into some jeans and a gold necklace hung around my neck. My hair was up in a neat bun and I put on some minimal make-up. Because of my job, I couldn't wear accessories on my hands. There were also times when I would have to remove my wedding ring just to be safe. My gaze dropped to my ring and I laughed at myself. I never imagined that I would ever value my marriage this much, especially with the circumstances that brought us together. My thoughts were interrupted by Zack walking into the bedroom. He had a black suit on and his hair was gorgeously ruffled up. He looked as amazing as always, but I could not help but notice that he had something on his mind. He's actually been lo

Zack. I hummed a soft melody as I made my way towards Elaine's shop. She has been acting strange for a while now and despite our late night talk, she was even more out of it this morning. She didn't even talk to me much before leaving for work. But all that was going to end today. I prepared an evening date for us and I restocked her card with cash. I hoped my gifts would lift up her mood and the thank you text I got from her was really cute. I cleared my throat as I stood in front of the door. The last time I was here, I had an argument with Elaine and I was embarrassed by my jealousy towards her employee. I had to trust her. Also, I was much better than him in every aspect so, I let it not worry me. There was nothing to argue about now so, I pushed open the door and stepped in. The interior of this shop never ceased to impress me. I looked at the counter and saw Ethan staring at me. "Welcome, sir," he said nervously when

Elaine.Zack drove a little faster than usual and the cool, evening air filled the car. Judging from the direction of the wind, the front windows were probably opened midway and it felt amazing after being closed up at that woman's wedding.I was itching to see the view since the lights always looked magical in the dark, but this blindfold deprived me of that. I wondered where Zack was taking me. He didn't look like the type of man who did such things and I didn't know what to expect.I could not think of anything bad because of the nervous smile that he had on his face when he asked me to put on the blindfold. But at the same time, I couldn't think of any special occasion currently or any coming up. Whatever it was, I hoped that his mother wasn't there. The car suddenly came to a stop and Zack gave me a soft peck.
