Chapter 8

Author: Tightrope
If Ariel had stayed on the path she originally wanted, she would have ended up in aerospace engineering.

Drones were among the most important technological advancements of the era. They were used in military operations, civilian industries, and agriculture.

The only reason she had gotten a glowing recommendation to the research institute back then was because of her own achievements.

She designed and oversaw the development of U.N, a reconnaissance and strike drone that featured long-range capabilities, heavy payload capacity, high speed, and automated operation.

Ariel's breakthroughs had overcome key technological barriers, and the drone was now actively deployed in military operations.

In the aerospace field, it was considered top-tier.

But marriage had cost Ariel everything. Now, she was physically and mentally wrecked, staring down a cancer diagnosis at a young age, with no idea how much time she had left.

Yet, if nothing else, she had learned one thing. One should always put oneself first and live for oneself.

Even if she couldn't be cured, Ariel refused to spend what little time she had left in regret.

She wanted to return to her field and focus on nurturing her dreams.

Janice didn't understand the tech side of things, but Faye Technologies had a real heavyweight running the show, Chad Hockney.

Janice provided the funding, while Chad and a team handled the research. In just a few years, Faye Technologies had skyrocketed to prominence, becoming a dark horse in Eldoria's tech scene.

But…

"You know how it is. When I got married, Chad cut me off completely. He's the one running Faye Tech now. I doubt he'd even let me through the door," Ariel said.

The lecturer who had once written her recommendation letter was Chad's father. The father and son had trusted Ariel and went out of their way to support her. They truly believed she was destined for greatness, perhaps even something that would make their country proud.

But after she got married, she let them down.

Janice scratched her head. "Chad's all talk. You know how he is—stubborn as hell but a softie deep down. Let me set something up and get you two to talk it out. He actually misses you, you know."

Ariel smiled bitterly.

If Morgan hadn't schemed to get Ariel into Jayson's bed and forced her to give up everything she loved, her life might have turned out very differently.

Just then, her phone buzzed. Renee was calling.

Ariel frowned and declined the call.

She and Jayson were about to get divorced. She had no reason to entertain Renee anymore.

But Renee was relentless. There was an unmistakable arrogance to it.

By the fifth call, Ariel pressed her lips and finally picked up.

"God, you're so annoying! Can't you see my name on your screen?" Renee shouted.

"What do you want?"

"My school has a parent-teacher meeting at 10:00 am. You'll go in Jay's place. If anyone asks, just say you're our maid. Got it?"

Jayson had just gone public with Nancy. The last thing Renee wanted was for people to misunderstand Nancy.

Ariel replied calmly, "I'm not your mother, and I'm not your sister-in-law anymore. Find your legal guardian. And one more thing. You're old enough to understand what basic respect means."

Then, she hung up.

She felt exhausted.

Renee had never liked her. Young people were perceptive. They picked up on the way adults treated people.

She had grown up thinking Ariel was some desperate gold digger who had forced her way into marrying Jayson. And for the past three years, every time she had a school break, she had made Ariel's life hell.

She demanded food and made Ariel do her laundry. She always found new ways to push her buttons.

And when things between Jayson and Nancy had started heating up, Renee had deliberately kept Ariel busy to make sure she couldn't interfere with their dates.

She was 17. She should know better.

Ariel had no obligation to put up with Renee anymore.

Seeing that Ariel was truly standing her ground, Janice was finally convinced of her determination to divorce. Without wasting any time, she left for Faye Technologies to try to talk Chad into meeting with Ariel.

Ariel waited for her IV drip to finish.

By 5:00 pm, her phone rang again. It was Evelyn.

After some hesitation, she answered it.

"Where did Renee go? Didn't she ask you to attend the parent meeting? The teacher said you didn't show up, and Renee took the day off too. Now, no one can find her!" Evelyn's tone was sharp, and her impatience was evident.

Ariel frowned. She hadn't expected this.

Evelyn had never liked her. She practically despised her. If Ariel hadn't "forced" Jayson into marriage back then, he would've married someone of proper status.

"I don't know," Ariel replied.

"You bailed on her first! Now you're trying to wash your hands of this? Not that it's surprising. You couldn't even have a kid in three years. Why would you have any sense of responsibility toward someone else's?"

"Alright, calm down. You know how Ari is," came a weak voice from the other end. It was Jayson's grandmother, Betty Stewart. "Renee's not a child anymore. And she's not Ari's responsibility."

Betty was the only person in the Larkin family who had ever treated Ariel with kindness.

For three years, she had protected Ariel as best she could. Jayson had only agreed to marry her in the first place because Betty's health was fragile, and she couldn't handle stress.

And their families had history. Ariel's grandfather had once fought alongside Jayson's. Betty had always liked her. That was why she agreed to the marriage.

Hearing Betty get dragged into this mess, Ariel weighed her options and finally said, "I'll try to get in touch with Renee."

She had let Renee get away with too much in the past. Today, she had drawn a line, and it had embarrassed Renee.

Renee was at an age where rebellion was second nature. A young woman wandering around alone wasn't exactly safe. Not to mention, Ariel had been the one who had shut her down earlier.

After pulling out her IV, Ariel swayed slightly as she forced herself upright.

She called Renee several times, but each call went unanswered or was quickly ended, as if Renee were deliberately toying with her.

But three years in public relations had taught Ariel a thing or two. She was skilled at paying attention to details. She carefully searched through Renee's social media posts.

Eventually, she pinpointed the location of a pool club.

When she finally got there, she spotted several familiar faces in one of the private rooms. And at the center of it all were Jayson and Nancy.

Renee was practically glued to Nancy, bombarding her with questions about Ashford University.

Then, out of the corner of her eye, she spotted Ariel. Immediately, she latched onto Nancy's arm.

"Jay loves you so much. So I guess I can stop calling you Ms. Stanton now. How about just Nancy? I'm already treating you like my sister-in-law."

When Jayson returned, his face was as cold as ever. Nancy immediately knew that he had argued with Ariel. Jayson's irritation with Ariel was evident.Renee, however, seemed distracted. "Jay, did she say anything to you? Like talking bad about me or anything?"Jayson lifted his gaze to her. "What did you do to make her upset?""Nothing." Renee pouted as she sipped her juice. "I'm not that free!"Perry walked in and glanced at Jayson. He didn't comment on the earlier scene, figuring it was best not to make Nancy upset. After all, it was hard to comment on the situation when another woman had thrown herself at her man.Matt scoffed. "Why ask Renee? Ariel was out of line. She followed you here. She should know better than to make a scene when she's got no leverage."Perry lit a cigarette. "From the looks of it, even if you file for divorce, she'll still cling to you. She had already told him everything."It's not too late." Chad sighed dramatically. "As long as you've figured things out, it's never too late to start over. She was never meant to be buried in obscurity. The U.N2 drone, which had amazed the industry for years, was widely believed to be Chad's creation. Nancy had a drone pilot certification, so controlling it was effortless for her.She won round after round of cheers. She was really confident and outstanding. No wonder Jayson had fallen for her at first sight. A woman like her certainly had the charm to captivate men.Objectively speaking, Ariel had to admit that Nancy had a certain charm. She was gentle, poised, and had been raised with care since childhood.Being smart, ambitious, and undeniably beautiful, she naturally became the center of attention wherever she went. But everything Nancy had was stolen.Nancy's mother, Sarah Moore, had once been friends with Elena. Sarah had come from an underprivileged background. Back then, Elena had paid her tuition and helped her through graduate school. But in the end, Sarah had stolen the academic paper Elena had spent two years painstakingly researching and published it under her own name. She had trampled over Elena to climb the ranks and change her social status. "You don't know?" Betty immediately caught on, her voice sharp with irritation. "I booked a two-day retreat at Quillan's Peak for you and Jayson! When I asked him yesterday, he said he'd already given you the tickets."Ariel was stunned. She was about to pull her hand away when Jayson let go first and deliberately stepped away."It'll be hard to explain to Grandma if you leave now," he said.Realization dawned on Ariel, and she asked in disbelief, "You want me to cover for you and Nancy?"She couldn't believe that he would do this just so it would be easier for him to explain to Betty. What exactly did he take her for?Jayson looked at her as he adjusted his cufflinks. "None of this would be a problem if you hadn't shown up."Ariel felt a surge of frustration rise within her. Evelyn's tone was laced with disdain. "You don't come from a good family, and your education is average at best. Do you really expect Jayson to introduce his wife as a housewife?"She had never approved of Ariel, not even a little.Back then, they had been forced to go with the worst possible option. She still thought Jayson had gotten the short end of the stick. On the other hand, Nancy, who had been getting close to Jayson lately, had some class, at least. Her family background wasn't up to the Larkin family's standards either, but at least she was well-educated. That was something Ariel could never compete with.Ariel understood Evelyn's thoughts. She responded calmly, "You won't have to worry about that for much longer."Evelyn frowned. "What do you mean?"Before Ariel could answer, the sound of a car engine came from outside.A tall, imposing figure stepped into the living room.Jayson's gaze swept across the room. It was Betty. He got up and walked outside."Grandma, why are you still awake this late?"Betty snorted. "And what about you? Shouldn't you be with Ari?"Jayson pinched the bridge of his nose. "I'm busy with work.""Don't give me that! You think I don't hear the rumors? I know who you've been spending time with! How can you do this to Ari?" Betty was livid.Jayson's gaze darkened. His tone was obviously softer and gentler when he spoke. "Okay, I'm coming back now."He didn't even care if Ariel still had things to discuss with him. He just turned around and started walking off in a hurry. It reminded her of how he used to treat her in the past, just as coldly as before.Initially, Ariel also wanted to ask him when he'd be available to visit Betty and tell her the truth. After seeing Jayson rushing toward Nancy without a doubt, Ariel just turned around and got into her car.Whatever. There was a folded test report in his hand, and Ariel felt her heart suddenly squeezing anxiously. She immediately rushed forward and snatched the report away from him."Did you read it?"Jayson quietly looked at her pale face. "Why so anxious?"He had seen the paper slip out of her pocket when he came over, and he'd simply picked it up for her. He hadn't been able to peek at it yet."You're thinking too much, Mr. Larkin," Ariel said, relaxing a little before completely calming down.Jayson just looked at her as the cogs turned in his head. "You seem to like addressing me as 'Mr. Larkin' lately."Ariel hurriedly stuffed the test report into the folder and asked, "Is there a reason why you came looking for me?"She didn't explain that it was because Nancy had brought it up in the past. Also, they were going to get divorced very soon. It would be better for her to address him as "Mr. Larkin" anyway."Are you si

She wasn't planning to greet Ariel.Ariel used to ask her about Jayson's habits and preferences, and she'd worry about Renee wearing skirts without leggings in the winter. Renee made her usual visit to Jayson and Ariel's marital home after school during the next day afternoon. She was starving. As soon as she entered the house, she called out, "Ariel?"Georgia came out and took Renee's backpack. "Mrs. Larkin isn't around, Ms. Larkin."Surprised, Renee frowned and asked, "Isn't she supposed to get lunch ready by this time?"She was also aware that Ariel had been delivering lunch to Jayson. As the house was close to Bluum Corp, she would prepare the food before work and rush home to get it done during her lunch break. She'd then ask Colton to help deliver it to Jayson.Even though he never wanted to see her, Ariel wouldn't give up.Renee came over today just to eat the food Ariel made. They were talking about something, but anyone could tell that they both had matching scarves on them. What level of intimacy would compel two adults to wear matching scarves?Jayson looked up and happened to see Ariel patting Chad on the back. The two of them seemed to look close.Matt chuckled coldly. "I've truly underestimated her. She has no real skills, but when it comes to hooking up with men, she's quite experienced."Perry frowned and glanced over to Ariel. He had been at the receiving end of her cold, disgusted gaze days before. Compared to how she was looking at Chad now, it was clear that she felt differently toward him."Wait, but how did she know Chad?" Matt asked, perplexed.Although Faye Technologies was still in the early stages of stabilizing and developing, Chad had come from a strong background and had top-tier abilities.Logically, someone from Ariel's level shouldn't have had the opportunity to connect with him."Jayson?"
