Bernard paced up and down in his home office as he looked at the text message on his burner phone. A growl of frustration escaped his lips as he glared at the offending message. He was tired of the constant excuses and hearing that another promising lead had become a deadend. Day after day, week after week, year after year it was the same thing. The one time he had been close to finding her and she up and disappeared. It wasn’t long and he was yelling and cursing as he stormed out of his office. One of his maids was unlucky enough to pass him in the hallway. Bernard simply grabbed her and threw her over the railing. The maid screamed in terror as she fell from the third floor and landed with a sickening thud on the white italian marble floor.
Members of his staff stood there gaping in horror as the maid laid almost lifeless on the ground. Blood seeped from where her head struc
Bridgette hung up the phone and turned wide eyes towards Kane who was leaning against the counter in the kitchen staring at her with worried eyes. He could tell by the concerned tone of her voice that she was worried about the phone call she had gotten.“What happened?” Kane asked, looking at her with concern.“Call Dex. Something has happened and Athena quit. I don’t know what happened but she is bringing a boy with her … Kane, she’s in danger….” She whispered, looking up at him in fear.“Did she say what happened?” Kane asked, coming to stand next to her.“Just that we need to meet. She said something horrible happened and that she was quitting and going to be bringing a l
“We’re already starting the process of creating a paper trail and new identities for the both of you. Your paperwork will be ready in a few hours as well. We don’t want you to worry about anything else right now except for the part that you’re going to play in convincing them that he will be out of town for a while.” Dex said, smiling gently at them. “How do I know that all of this will work? That we will be able to get away?” She asked, playing with her fingers. “Because I help people get new identities all the time. People, who like you, have no choice but to run. “ Dex said with a reassuring smile. “Athena?” The young boy asked, looking up at her in confusion. “Who are these people?” “The woman over there is a friend of mine. Remember how m
“Do you want us to go inside with you?” Kane asked, worried that she might fly off the handle.“No. Whatever happened isn’t good. We can’t draw attention to Marco being with us either. Just stay here with him.” She said, getting out of the car and slamming the door shut.“She looks mad....” Marco whispered as he unbuckled and leaned forward watching her march into the school with a scowl on her face.“Yeah… It probably wasn’t a good idea to let her go in alone….” Kane mumbled. When Bridgette walked inside the office she was surprised to find Ms. Willson, Mrs. Anderson, Mr. Jefferson, Sammy’s new teacher, and a very angry looking parent all waiting f
Bridgette didn’t stay around to watch the rest. She stormed out of Ms. Willson’s office, slamming the door behind her. As soon as her eyes landed on the woman all thought left her mind. She pounced on her raining down punches on the screaming woman’s face. She was seeing red as she screamed at her. Her rage blinding her to everything else around her.“How dare you fucking hit her!” She screamed between punches. “How dare you hold her in place and let someone hit her!”The police were so surprised it took them a moment to realize what was happening. A very angry parent had seen a teacher put their hands on their child and even encouraged someone to hit her. They could understand her anger towards the woman but they still needed to break up the fight.“
“I’m pressing charges. You know as well as I do she instigated the whole thing. Those other girls would have never taken it further than pushing and shoving. I don’t know what she said and I don’t care. I don’t know how her mother is raising her but it’s definitely not the right way. Sammy has always been taught not to harm others but at the same time I don’t want her to be seen as weak and let others walk all over her either.”“Okay. You’re free to go.” He said, handing her a card. “If you have any questions this is my number.”“Thanks.” Bridgette said, taking his card and going back to the car. When they pulled up to the house Bridgette panicked for a moment before Kane’s hand on her arm
Digger watched the young woman go inside the house as he swore up and down internally. He found the way she had stood up to him arousing. He didn’t know what it was but there was something about her that had him hard and aching. With a frustrated groan he climbed on his bike vowing to one day have a taste of the woman occupying the land.Bridgette stood at her desk watching the screens with a frown as Digger climbed on his bike. She heaved a sigh of relief when she saw him pull away. Her legs buckled and she sagged into her chair as fear began to suddenly over take her. She hated that he could still make her whole being tremble with fear. She was currently bent over and trying to get her breathing under control when Kane and Marco came into her office in search of her.“Hey.” Kane whispered, running over to her. “What happened? Whe
“I thought… didn’t we take care of that already?” She asked, looking up at her.“We told him what we had to tell him so that he wouldn’t react badly in public. We’re in private now. He needs to know the truth.”“Bridgette, what? Why would you tell him the truth?” Dex demanded in surprise.“Bridgette’s right. That boy has seen enough to know that people die. He might not remember but he’d appreciate it better than us lying to him. You can give him the same story that the police will spin about her dying in an accident but he needs to know the truth instead of growing up thinking people just keep abandoning him.” Kane said.“You two can’t be seriou
With a heavy heart she marched up the stairs and into the playroom where she found him occupied with some toys. Bridgette sighed with a heavy heart as she watched him play. He probably wouldn’t have anything to do with anyone for a while and her heart was breaking when she thought about his smile dimming even just a little bit.“Hey, Marco.” She said, softly, leaning against the door jamb.“Hey, Bridge! This room is awesome!” He said, giving her a toothy grin.“I’m glad you like it, kiddo, but I need to talk to you about something…” She said, sadly.“Okay.” He said nervously.“Come let’s go talk in your room…&rd

After a few more rounds they fell asleep wrapped up in each other’s arms. Kane rolled over in his sleep reaching for Bridgette but frowned when he found her side cold and empty. He sat up and rubbed the sleep from his eyes. He looked around the room and sighed at the quiet. Kane climbed out of the bed and slipped on his underwear. He padded down the stairs in search of Bridgette.Kane went to the kitchen and noticed that the coffee maker was off. He frowned and went to the office thinking that she could be there or in the bunker. When he saw that the desk was in place he began to worry. On top of the desk was a note written in Bridgette’s messy handwriting. Tears stained some of the paper causing the ink to run and smudge a little.Kane,
“I have for a long time.” Kane whispered, crossing over to her.Bridgette stood there in shock staring up at him. A deep blush spread across her face as she swallowed the nervous lump in her throat. She blinked a few times before realizing that he stood directly in front of her. She sighed as his hands threaded into her hair, holding her still as he pressed his lips to her’s.Bridgette moaned into the kiss as she wound her arms around his neck. She stood on the tips of her toes and pressed into him as he nipped and sucked her bottom lip. Her heart pounded into her chest as she lost her senses to him. He was constantly invading her mind and even though there were more important matters to deal with her mind thought only of him.In her foggy haze she barely registered him picking he
Kane returned two hours later with an annoyed Mary in tow. Her jaw was hanging open as she took in the large house on the familiar property. She turned wide accusing eyes on him a moment later as her mouth began to turn down into a frown.“Are you fucking kidding me?” She growled angrily. “This is where you’ve been?”“Just shut it and come inside. We have a lot to do and not much time to do it.” He said, climbing out of his truck.“Don’t order me around, you ass!” She huffed as she followed him to the front door.To her surprise he entered the house without knocking. “Hey,” Dex said, coming to stand next to him.“Hey. Did you guys get everything sorted out?” Kane asked.“She’s dragging her feet and I can’t say that I blame her. She doesn’t trust anyone except Bridgette.” Dex sighed, running a hand through his hair. “I don’t know what to do…. We can’t expect Jess and Machine to take her in. They have the kids so their hands are full.”“I might have an idea….” Bridgette whispered, stepping outside to join them.“What are you thinking?” Dex asked, raising a brow.“Can you call your sister?” She asked, turning her eyes towards Kane.
“Jess, I need you and Machine to take the kids and keep them safe.” Bridgette sighed.“I thought that they were safe here.” Machine frowned.“They were.” Kane said, still mad that she had put herself in danger again.“What happened?” Jess asked.“That bastard managed to get to an informant and his family. Long story short, their dead and they were under federal guard.” Bridgette sighed.“But what does that have to do with the kids?” Machine asked.“It means that if he can get to them while they’re under federal protection then he can get to me and it won't
“Bridgette, you need to stop and think about this!” Kane yelled, following her through the house.“There’s nothing to think about.” She said with a stoney face as she made her way down to the bunker.“Why won’t you stop and listen to me?” He argued.“Because you’re just going to try and talk me out of this and there’s nothing you can say to change my mind.” She said, starting up the computers.“Goddammit! I don’t want to lose you! I can’t go through that again!” He yelled.“You’re not going to lose me, but you are going to have to trust me!” She said, turning to face him teary eyes. &
Bridgette sighed and leaned against the railing as she thought about how crowded her place had suddenly become. The cold air blew across her skin reminding her that she hadn’t worn a jacket or shoes. She closed her eyes, savoring the quiet as the wind whipped her hair around. She didn’t mind the chill or the numbness in her appendages. Her mind was elsewhere as she stared out at the early morning sky.“Bridgette….” Kane sighed, opening the door with a fresh cup of steaming coffee in his hands. “What are you doing out here in the cold?”Bridgette didn’t turn to look at him as he watched her worriedly. She took a deep breath of air and sighed, watching the warm air float out on the early morning breeze. She tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear and nibbled on her bottom lip.
