Chapter 1 Damon strode through the door of his penthouse and set Alicia on her feet. He hadn't said a word since they’d left Night Light, not quite trusting his voice or emotions. The silence between them was deafening but Alicia didn’t have the courage to break it. When she felt his hand on her back, pushing her ahead of him into the living room, she got a clue as to how angry he truly was. Quickly turning around to keep him in sight, she silently watched as he jerked off his coat and tossed it clear across the room. The trench coat landed on the back of the sofa but Damon had already forgotten about it, choosing instead to stalk his escape artist of a mate. “Damon, wait,” Alicia felt the need to beg as she backed up. “Wait for what?” Damon a
Chapter 2 Zachary leaned against the banister at the top of the stairs looking down on the main floor. He became very still when he spotted one of the youngest and newest members of PIT… Tiara. She’d always been an unofficial part of PIT, even though as a child she didn’t have any powers and never went out on assignment. Because of her mother’s necromancer abilities, Tiara had been dragged around with the PIT team all her life. He’d heard from some of the others that it was kind of like being an army brat... just better protected. While the parents went out to war, the child was usually placed in a secure area… normally a hotel room that was guarded by the CIA. There was something about being different … sometimes the last of your kind that made their lives harder than most. It tended to kick in their strongest instincts… too survive and protect their young. Every PIT member had enemies… it was one of the drawbacks of being a trained demon assassin. Those same ene
Chapter 3 “We need to wait until dusk,” Tiara said, as she looked out the window unable to face Guy’s angry disappointment or Zachary’s authority over her. She was nervous enough as it was. “Why wait?” Jason asked, not liking the idea of going out in the dark after demons or ghosts or whatever it was this girl wanted to go after. “Good question,” Trevor said. “I’m all for going out after these things but going when it starts to get dark is like walking around carrying a big neon sign that says ‘Free Dinner’.” “Because that is when the dead begin to wake,” Tiara answered. “They are at their weakest because of the sunlight counteracting their darkness. That weakness has not faded… much like how weak you feel when you first awaken for the day. It is the same for them except they are nocturnal.” Trevor smirked, thinking of his mornings with Envy. “I’m not weak in the mornings. Whoever told you that has their information backwards.” “What’s wrong, are your x-girlfrie
Chapter 4 Guy followed Tiara down the steps that had been cut into the side of the cliff through a combination of human hands and natural forces. He silently followed his target down to the private beach. Tiara’s form came into view on the sand and he paused near the bottom long enough to look down on her lithe form. When his feet finally touched the sand, Guy had to stand in awe of the picture she was creating. With her long silky white hair and golden tan… she looked like a beautiful water nymph that had come ashore to lead men astray. Tiara was standing at the shoreline letting the water wash up over her sandals. Even though the cold darkness called to her, she loved the feel of the warm sun on her skin. Staring out over the ocean, she could feel the lives the water had taken over the millennia and never given back. Most humans who died went on to the next dimension… but there were always those who refused the call. She cocked her head to the side wondering if those
Chapter 5 “Storm,” Tiara acknowledged, then smiled warmly at him when he walked over and sat down on the bed beside her. Storm looked over at Guy with an unreadable expression on his face. He’d seen Guy carrying Tiara up the stairs with the same care he had shown his sister. “Did I miss something?” Guy refused to fidget as Storm looked directly at him. He’d seen the time walker grab a man once in a fit of anger and the man had simply disappeared never to be seen again. Considering what Storm was, Guy sure as hell did not want to end up in the Stone Age. “I will protect Tiara as a permanent member of her group,” Guy informed the time walker stoically. “So I did miss something,” Storm mused. This was new to him and he was getting a kick out of finding out things the old fashioned way. Looking over at Zachary, Storm noticed the not-so-happy expression on the other man’s face and sighed inwardly. “Zachary, care to fill me in?” Tiara’s lips had parted to defend Guy b
Chapter 6 Michael walked slowly through the big house that had suddenly become very empty since Kane went MIA. His only company now was Scrappy, who always came and went as he pleased. The little fur ball was currently following him around the house waiting for Michael to sit down somewhere. When Michael finally took a seat on the sofa, Scrappy wasted no time in hopping up on his lap. “So, what do you think, Dust Bunny?” Michael asked feeling more alone than he had in years. Scrappy looked up at him with such an adorable expression that Michael couldn’t help but laugh. He was missing Damon as well… though he had to admit that he was missing Alicia just a little bit more than his brother. Unable to take the silence of the house, Michael stood up and went to get his trench coat. Scrappy followed after him again, hopping up and down around Michael’s feet like a pogo stick. When Michael opened the door, Scrappy ran out ahead of him to the end of the walkway and waited b
Chapter 7 Tiara sat curled up in her chair in front of her desk memorizing the addresses of all the cemeteries in Los Angeles. She’d been at it for a few hours now and her eyes were starting to burn. This job was very important to her and she’d vowed to be just as good at it as Myra had been. She loved her mom but the one thing she didn’t want was to stand in Myra’s shadow. She had a different plan in mind. In order to use her necromancy night after night, she would have to pick a lover and eventually a mate. She smiled remembering all the times she’d used her mother’s log in to access the PIT database. She’d had a habit of waiting until her mother was out for the night before borrowing her laptop with the excuse that she was bored and wanted to watch a movie on it. The first thing she’d always done was scour the database for any mention of Zachary… the only PIT member that knew her mom’s secret. Any new information on him and his whereabouts were few and far between bu
Chapter 8 “I thought you would want to know,” Ren said right before putting on his sunglasses and teleporting from the office. Ren teleported to an alley in the middle of downtown Los Angeles and readjusted his jacket before walking to the end of the alley. Stepping out into the direct sunlight, he mentally growled wondering what in the hell Storm was thinking about. He’d ordered Ren to stay away from the main clusters of demons congregating in mass numbers and stick to picking off stragglers as they popped up. He couldn’t understand why Storm was giving the master demons more time to grow stronger. It was now that they needed to strike rather than wait. If they waited much longer, the power levels would go through the roof. Ren growled in agitation at what he saw as a waste of time. He would rather be dead center in a mob of powerful demons right now instead of walking down the sidewalk searching for the rest of the garbage. He smirked when most of the other pedestrian
Chapter 21 Jason was running across the cemetery, following the lure of the ring Tiara had given him. He couldn’t explain exactly how, but the ring seemed to be leading him toward her. If he changed direction, the light of the ring would dim until he turned back in the right direction. Before long he could see tell-tale signs of Zachary’s work. One whole area of the cemetery was a smoldering expanse of… nothing. There were dips in the ground where trees had been burned right down to their roots and the places where grave markers had stood where nothing but small holes. The sight Tiara had given let him see the souls hovering over what would have been their graves. Some of them looked like small clouds of mist while others were full-bodied apparitions. They would turn their heads to look at him before looking back in the direction he was traveling. Jason stopped running for a moment to get some sense of direction when the soul of a little boy appeared in front of h
Chapter 20 Craven stood on the roof of a large mausoleum at the back edge of the cemetery watching the battle unfold from a distance. Night Hawk stood silently beside him with an impassive expression on his face. They had no plans to get involved with this battle… they were merely waiting for the outcome. There were too many demon hunters scattered throughout the graveyard and Craven had no wish to engage them at this time. The power inside the mausoleum shifted a bit and Craven looked down at the roof where he was standing. The master demon of this graveyard was inside, creating its hideous offspring by the droves. They had seen numerous ‘baby’ demons emerge from the building and run toward the main hub of battle. Craven really had no interest in the smaller demons. He was merely waiting to see which hunter was strong enough to kill the master. Once that happened he planned to move in and expand his territory with this cemetery. There were also more than a few abandoned ho
Chapter 19 Micah had shifted and was running full tilt through the cemetery trying to find Alicia. He was starting to understand Damon’s frustration with her always running off. The problem was he should have been used to it by now. Titus had also shifted and was running side by side with him and Boris was bringing up the rear. The three of them followed Alicia’s scent to a secluded area of the cemetery and slid to a stop on the damp earth. A skitter lay dead on the ground with its arms broken, belly torn open by clawed hands and the head laying at a very odd angle. Boris approached the creature and sniffed at it before backing away and sneezing violently. He tossed his head in the direction Alicia’s scent had gone and they took off after it. ***** Tabatha had been the last one out of the vehicle and she did a quick check of her 9mm to make sure the chamber was loaded before running into the cemetery. The rest of the pack had gone in after she told them
Chapter 18 Jason finished ripping the legs off of a Skitter that decided he would be the thing’s next meal. “Dummy, you’re lucky I don’t beat you with it,” he dropped the leg and turned toward the darkest side of the massive cemetery. Somehow, he knew exactly what direction Tiara was in. He looked down at the ring on his hand, which had started glowing bright like a miniature electric blue sun. Jason started running across the cemetery. He slid to a stop when two more Skitters suddenly dropped down in front of him, hissing and scurrying back and forth acting like they were about to attack. One of them suddenly ran at him and Jason held out his hand to grab at it when the creature stopped and backed away with a high pitched shriek. Jason watched as it lifted one of its appendages in an attempt to shield its eyes. The second Skitter was slowly moving away from him as well with a look of fear in its crimson eyes as it stared at his hand. Its lips pulled back showing two rows o
Chapter 17 Skitters and ghosts were closing in from all sides and for different reasons. Zachary kept Tiara close to him in an effort to protect her from the hoard of arachnid-like demons. The rest of the teams had spread out because of the size of the cemetery. However, with the number of demons surrounding them, that may not have been the best idea because this was the area that was starting to look like party central. “Are you all right?” Zachary asked trying to check Tiara for injuries and flambé several demons at the same time, which wasn’t the easiest thing in the world to do since he had yet to let go of her wrist. “I’m fine,” Tiara answered and pulled back on her wrist wanting to help him fight. When he refused to release her, she shrugged remembering she didn’t need her hands to use her necromancy… it was just instinct to want them free so she could defend herself. She noticed the souls trying to come closer to her but they were avoiding the Skitters that were
Chapter 16 Zachary leaned to the side and watched the tombstone bust as it hit another one behind him. Flipping back around, he made a face at the demon and decided it was too ugly to live… not that it would have anyway. A ball of fire formed in his open hand and he threw it at the demon. His eyes widened when it crouched down on all four spider-like legs. It took off skittering sideways like some fast creepy-crawly contortionist reminding him of the thing that climbed out of the TV at the end of the movie “The Ring.” A serious wave of the wiggly-boos washed over him when he looked in the direction it scurried off to, noting several more of its clones. They were crawling over the tombstones and across the ground with blinding speed and Zachary repressed a shiver. Taking a second to let it all sink in, he realized Storm had dropped him off in the middle of the graveyard with no idea where Tiara was or how to get to her. “When in doubt, follow the monsters,” Zachary m
Chapter 15 They moved as one entity through the gate and purposely formed a circle with Tiara in the center. Shadows and things definitely thicker than shadows moved back and forth among the tombstones, stalking them. Chad felt cold sweat trickle down the side of his temple and resisted the urge to squirm. He had a feeling that any sign of weakness now would be a huge mistake. Trevor didn’t like the feeling of being watched and fought to keep the growl rising in his throat silent. Jason was still nervous but tried to swallow it as he put his hand on the hilt of the special blade Tiara had given him during the ride over. He was really beginning to regret going into work the day Black Crow gave him the death mark. He was human and it was very hard to wrap his mind around the fact that if a plane dropped out of the sky, he would be the only one left crawling from the rubble. But then again, what were the chances of that happening? One hundred percent at this rate. Guy and
Chapter 14 “Uh oh,” Angelica said and opened the door further. “I know that look. You messed up didn’t you?” Zachary glared and stepped into the room. “I don’t know what I did. All I know is Tiara’s feelings were supposedly hurt and I don’t have a clue why.” Angelica shrugged, “Did you ask her?” “No,” Zachary growled. “I was just threatened with life-long haunting from Carley’s ghost if I even attempted to talk to Tiara tonight.” Angelica walked over to the bed and sat down moving her sketch pad so Zachary could have a seat. “So give me the rundown of what you do know.” Zachary opened his mouth then snapped it shut pressing his lips together. Without warning, he reached for Angelica’s temples and held on when she immediately started to struggle. He closed his eyes and let the whole mess pass between them, and then just as abruptly, let go. Within those couple seconds, he’d showed her everything that happened from the time Storm had put him in charge of the g
Chapter 13 “I found it!” Carley exclaimed. Tiara covered her mouth with both hands to keep from screaming and spun around to look at the ghost. “Sorry,” Carley said in a softer voice. “I keep forgetting that no one can hear me coming now.” Tiara shook her head, “Nothing to worry about,” she breathed. “Anyway,” Carley started up again remembering her excitement, “I found a spell in one of my books that will keep me safe from not only your necromancy, but any form of necromancy that we may run into. I also found a spell that will allow whoever you choose to see the ghosts you guys go to put down, or rescue… guess that depends on who’s controlling them. Tiara nodded and tried to smile but failed miserably. She went through all of that with Zachary when it could have been done an easier way? She hoped the gods were having fun laughing at her right now. Tilting her head thoughtfully, she realized this was a perfect opportunity to rant to someone that wouldn’t go
