Sage moved forward, bending his body towards her and levering his shoulders off the leather-padded backrest and seat. "And what exactly would someone like me fail to comprehend, doctor?"

Sophie clenched her teeth and tilted her head. Her wolf growled, but it didn't take away the sense of being trapped or the nerve-racking impact of his testosterone aura. She would have accepted the opportunity to crawl out of her skin if it had been provided at the time.

"Duty," she said, her jaws clenched.

Sage's mockingly sardonic laugh was delivered from his throat. "Of course, obligation. Duty! And all of this contributes to my brother being the alpha that he is." His languid handclap exacerbated her rage.

"What is funny about that?" Sophie raised her brow.

His pupils dilated. "I'm sorry," he muttered, sounding far from sorry. "Was I supposed to be inspired by your sacrifice? Oh, I don't think it's amusing, dear; I think it's awful that you're so thrilled about martyrdom. Being a saint. I'd blame indoctrination, but I believe you have always been a good daddy's little girl, yeah?"

The breath hissed as it left her lungs. "Unlike some, I have grown up and do not regard myself as a saint!" she sighed. "This is what the moon goddess has in store for me—to be someone who can unite our pack." Her voice trembled; she was shivering inside and out from the tremendous surge of emotions his words had evoked.

It was a reality of life—or at least her life—that she had little choice over many things, but this was one time she didn't have to accept it—or him!

"You may scorn the notion of responsibility and service, but I'd rather be a nice girl than a narcissistic, thrill-seeking, mindless waste of space," she says. "Is there ever a time in your life when you didn't prioritize yourself and your pleasure before anything else?"

She probably imagined a flicker of what appeared to be appreciation before his head dipped to one side as he appeared to evaluate her query.

"Probably not," he conceded. "But I will never be a pawn."

"Well, even if we wanted it, being a narcissistic waster is not a luxury we can all afford."

"You enjoy your moral high ground, and I hope that in a few years, when you are sporting the title Master Luna, you will still believe it was worth the things you gave up."

"I'm not giving up anything."

"How about your job? Being a pack doctor is essential; why did you waste time, effort, and money studying to become a physician when you had no plans of ever employing that skill?"

"Why the hell do you care?" she asked.

"I don't."

Her eyes fell. "I have to do it because Landon's luna is my destiny; he is my mate."

"Do you love him?"

She halted. "Um–"

"I don't need to know," he sighed. "It's none of my business anyway because my instructions are to deliver you to the Pack Boundary Council building. Where our patrol officer could check your paper out from your own pack."

"I'm not a package, I'm a person!"

"Of course, with feelings—where have my manners gone?" Sage drew in closer, and her nostrils flared as the manly, warm aroma of his flesh, blended with a faint perfume, filled them.

"Be at ease. Feel free to cry on my shoulder, doctor."

"I don't need a shoulder, and if I did—"

"I'm only the spare," he said, exaggerating his groan as Sophie fell back heavily. "I completely understand. You're preserving yourself for the man in charge. For the future Master Alpha. Why am I not surprised?"

What was wrong with this man? Sophie couldn't make out who he was. He was a jerk one moment, and then he appeared, um, well... God, she was going insane thinking about Landon's younger brother. "What a mess," she thought to herself.

Her hands clenched into fists as she looked at him with burning eyes. "You are a really horrible beta, you know that, right?"

"And you are a very attractive doctor," he said, his countenance contemptuous. "Wait, are you?" He stroked her chin and turned her face toward him. "You are blushing!"

"I'm not blushing," Sophie realised, a possibility that would explain his wild demeanour and the dangerous glint in his eyes. "Are you drunk? "

"Not for at least a couple hours," he said, raising his voice to reach the man behind the wheel. "Carlo, when did we leave?"

"I believe it was five a.m., sir," the tattooed guy said in a refined tone.

"Really? Oh, well, I'm totally sober... well, maybe not totally," he conceded. "Oh, here we are." The car drew up outside the Pack Patrol boundary building.

"Oh, and Landon sent his love, as well as this."

As the gentle, sensual exploration increased, he leaned over, and the acute shock that had held her frozen as his lips touched hers faded into something else. Sophie wasn't sure how her arms ended up around Sage's neck, but they did, and she was kissing him back as if he were spring and she'd spent the previous week in the drought. She'd never felt or anticipated anything like the quick burst of scorching yearning inside her. It was some sort of magical sensation that she never felt from her mate, Landon.

A need, a desire that became stronger as she felt a tremor sweep through his slender frame and his tongue brush against her wide lips. As he kneaded his fingers into her hair, she groaned into his mouth and pressed her body against his. She was on fire, overwhelmed with an intense want to...what?

Fortunately, the kiss came to an end almost as quickly as it had begun.

She shivered, her eyes wide, drawing in air in little laborious breaths as he leaned back in his seat, his captivating blue gaze burning. Colour streaks that are hot and black, emphasising the features of his high cheekbones.

"How could you?!"

It was startling to hear her open palm make contact with Sage's cheek.

"Come one, don't smack the courier, dear, I'm just the messenger," he said, raising his palm to his cheek.

"You are heinous!"

Sophie shivered as she coughed and almost fell out of the car as the door was opened by someone wearing Robinson Inforcer's uniform.

She could hear his laughter as she walked stiffly up the tiny set of building steps.

"Asshole," she whispered absentmindedly to herself, as if her thoughts weren't her own anymore. How could she have been so dumb as to respond to his kiss?

"I heard that, sweet!" exclaimed Sage before saying goodbye with a laugh.

Beta Sage pressed his body against the unyielding door that led to a rooftop deck. It gave suddenly, bringing a pleasant wind into the heated chamber. The vista was as striking as the plumbing was unique. His shower had started off chilly and then almost scalded him. Oh well, maybe it was time he learned how the other half lived, even if that half didn't have a lineage as renowned as his own. His lip curled into a sardonic grin for a split second. Sage had never been able to take his heritage seriously for obvious reasons, given that his reputation at school had been that of a regal bastard. A rap on the door prompted him to turn, but before he could reply, Alpha Landon entered the room, his usual smile missing. "Reading your body language, brother, I'd say you were just informed you've got weeks to live, or you've just had a head-to-head with our dear daddy." "Shut up, Sage! I'm exhausted," Landon rolled his eyes and gritted his teeth. "You are always tired, anyway." "Not surpri

"I'm curious, Sage. If dad knew, what do you think he'd do?" Alpha Landon asked, his eyes worrying. Beta Sage moved over to his older brother and placed his hand on Landon's shoulder as his annoyance gradually subsided. He assertively said, "He won't, Landon, stop worrying. Our mother's 'affair' love letters were burned. Nobody is aware that they ever existed, remember?" The young brothers had not known at the time they discovered their mother's love letters hidden under a floorboard that despite breaking off the affair after she discovered she was carrying her lover's child, Luna Robinson's pack had continued to see her lover after the child she had conceived with him had been born. "Perhaps father was aware of it; after all, his wolf would experience pain if mother made love to her lover, wouldn't it?" Landon inquired once more, behaving more like a teenager than the master-alpha-to-be of the werewolf kingdom. Sage grimaced and said, "Of course not; mother would know how to utili

Sophie’s mother entered her bedroom with dramatic abruptness just as she was fitting the last hair in the smooth twist she had wound her hair into. She thought to herself: There has been a disaster with her father’s warriors, or the meal for the engagement party was blunt, or worse, not enough to feed the deligate of Robinson's pack."Dear, we have a little problem," her mother said. "Oh, I can't believe this is happening," she said, throwing her hand in the air.Sophie didn't panic, but the worried Luna told her anyway. "I found out an hour ago that Master Luna is gluten and lactose intolerant. Half the menu had to be revised. The pack chef and omegas are not happy.""Mother, it's okay, you are panicking again. I’m sure it will be fine," Sophie soothed, getting to her feet. Focusing on her mother’s panic made it somehow easier to deal with her own nerves. "Just breathe." "Oh no!" Sophie quickly knelt, attempting to grasp the diamond and pearl that were bouncing around the polished oak floor in all directions. "Oh, no! Sh*t, sh*t!" "Relax, they're not the crown jewels." He came to a halt, his taunting expression gone as she lifted her head, and he saw she was in tears. "Just leave! okay? Damn it!" Sophie hissed angrily. "I couldn't care less. They're all mine. My treasure." With a grimace, Beta Sage kneeled beside her, sitting on his heels. He noticed the shaking in her shoulders and felt something hard twist in his chest. He did his best to ignore it, telling himself it was either indigestion or the threat of tears that had caused it. He’d never liked seeing women cry. "She left them to me," Sophie muttered beneath her breath. "She wore them all the time, and now they're destroyed! Everything has been wrecked..." "Who gave you this?" Sage inquired. "It's none of your business, just leave!" Sage wanted to roll his eyes and just ignore the woman

It was a dare Sage didn't even try to resist."You got it," he replied softly, and he was pleased at her reaction. Those incredible hazel eyes widened slightly. His entire body hummed with sexual anticipation as he watched her tongue come out and nervously lick those glossy red lips."Truth," he smirked and raised his brow at her. "Are you scared?""Of you?" she replied, her mouth curving into a smile. "Of course not!""Good," he said with a wink. Sage got up from the leather chair he'd been sitting in and approached the couch she was lying on. As he came around the large coffee table, he caught sight of the expression in her eyes and realized she was as excited as he was.He knew it was going to be good with her as he lowered his body down onto the couch. He sat down by her side, then leaned over.He decided to go for broke, so he kicked off his shoes and slid over her, his body pressing along every inch of hers. Two days later.Sage picked himself up off the floor and realized he could remember nothing from the time he’d entered the doorway hand in hand with Sophie until now. Even so, many hours after the rains have passed, the soil remains wet, releasing its heady fog. The melody of running water in the stream has the same slumberous quality as music; Raymond wants to stop just to drink in the melody. On the side, the berries were red and bitter, but with just the right amount of sweetness. He took in all the air her lungs could hold and expelled it. A few hours later, Alpha Henry took his cup of tea and savored the fresh minty taste. The cup of tea was small enough to fit in the palm of a child, holding that potent brew only the hardiest of the grown-ups could savor. Sipping it, he simply added it and looked at Eve. "By any chance, you knew something about where they took Elizabeth and the rest of them, Eve?""Yes, probably in the Devil's Forest.""Are you sure, Eve?""I'm sure. I was never wrong. The only forest that would disable the werewolves to shift, or more likely, the southern pack, has demon warriors and rogues on their side. It only made sense now. They've abducted Tomas before, and he wasn't able to fight them back, and because he wasn't able to communicate with his wolf, he became feral. Most likely, the one who had Jefferson and his family were feral."Sophie interrupted them, saying, "Eve, what does this devil's forest look like?""Glad you asked. "Who is this, Eve?" Sage appeared from behind them. His lips twisted. The words made the skill sound imperiously elegant. Eve swallowed a lump before she turned around and said, "Alpha Sage, this is Alpha Henry, ally of the north." Henry gasped, I'm sorry, Eve, Alpha Sage? The Alpha Sage? " he asked in bewilderment. Unbelievably surprised, he heard so much about this legendary alpha traveler, but none seemed to have seen him or knew him personally. It had been rumored that he wore a disguise and could vanish in thin air. He was rumored to be the only one who could travel in time and was cursed for eternity. If this was Alpha Sage, then he was indeed fortunate to have such an honor to see him face to face, and knowing that he was indeed real and not just the figment of imagination was a privilege enough. "Yes, I'm Alpha Sage of the Robinson Pack; how did you know me?" A few seconds passed before Henry could answer. "Pardon, um, I heard from, um, rumors, tales, and all," Henry respo

In the afternoon, Alpha Henry arrived at the misty woods and shifted into his human form. Butt-naked, he looked for something to cover himself and found a banana leaf. He wrapped it around his exposed manhood, tied it carefully around his waist, and then whispered a safe passage to the hidden cottage of Eve. Few knew about it, yet he was one of those few who was fortunate enough to know the precise location of her hidden location. Whispering words to the garlands, the foggy cottage was now visible as he knocked on the door and silently waited for Eve to open it. Surveying the surroundings, he noticed how the front door opened slightly, and the enclosed, tiny stone porch carried the aroma of flowers and the warmth of the home. The old wooden veranda was where one would relax when the chance of a conversation with passing neighbors was welcome, yet it was all covered in mud and drops of recent blood. "Eve?" On the left side, some plants reached up past the wooden railings and branched

She has to help him. She has to help Sage."I don't think it's a good idea, Luna Sophie." Eve muttered. "Let them. Don't worry about your mate. He is an alpha for a reason.""Well—" But out of shock, Sophie’s mind wouldn't even let her think, her feet running towards him. Ultimately, she knew he didn't need any help, but she did anyway. Alpha Henry woke up suddenly. It was just a dream, but it felt like it was real. He was confused for a while and tried to remember what happened as his bewildered mind began to ensue. He discovered that he was still on the floor of the banquet hall, below the table, and thankfully hidden. With all that wolfsbane in their drinks, it was all a loss. The northern pack manor didn't burn after all.All around him was blood, and dead bodies lay neglected humans and werewolves in human form. He glanced around and surveyed the banquet hall, yet no one appeared to move. The headache told him it was time to rest someplace quiet, to ride out the storm within his brain, for with time, pain does wane.Unhurriedly and carefully, he sauntered his way out of the manor and breathed in a lungful of the fresh morn

A dozen feet away, Sophie saw all the disregarded cadavers. Ten, or more. Gawking at it, she shuddered from the horror.Dozens of small mounds of earth were visible there. The heaped soil looked very dark in the moonlight. It must have looked even darker to humans. And still, Eve and Raymond did not move.Almost all of it has been disgustingly slaughtered for food, with the head, limbs, and entrails removed. It was suddenly very quiet. Some small thing chittered in a tree. The wind rattled the grass. And then more quiet, silence so deep it almost drowned out the roar of the night music that pounded away in her secret self.Sophie shivered as she thought about how the small dirt road was barely visible. You almost had to know it was there. But she knew. She had been there before. As Landon’s face passed over, he moistened his clitoral area and smelled the sweetness and sensual scent of her juices. As soon as the underwear was gone, his tongue found her wet mound. Her body trembled as the tip of his tongue flicked back and forth over her protruding clit. Casey spread her legs, and Landon gawked as her engorged lips spread, showing him the entrance to her tight mound. As her lips spread open, they allowed a tiny trickle of dampness to escape. Landon licked it up with his tongue. The intense taste refreshed his mind. He felt her pull on his pants and boxers. She jerked his head up to hers, and as she locked on to his lips, her tongue danced in his mouth, teasing him. Landon felt her cool hand grip his thick, hard shaft."I want this buried in me now!" He compelled and guided the tip of his shaft to the entrance to her moist mound. He began to thrust toward her, only moving enough to wet the head of his rod between her parted lips. Adding some strength, his head b
