"Come on, dad. A short walk around the street will be good for you."

Flora pulled off the blanket and helped him up to his feet. He had been spending so much time at home that she wondered about his health. Aside from the drugs, he needed good meals and exercise. He had been neglecting his exercises. Since he was on a break from work, he had little to do in the house but the small chores he could find because she didn't leave much for him to do.

"You don't have to stay around fussing over me every night. Go out. Enjoy some friendly company."

"I will, Dad." She helped him into his jacket and set his sandals down at his feet. "As soon as we get you on a planned schedule."

"I'll start taking walks. I'll eat whatever you leave in the fridge for me if it means you'll get back to even a semblance of your past self."

"I will. I will."

She was putting in the effort. Thankfully, aside from the magazines that posted stories of Samuel's family here and

"Hey." Kali smiled as she heard Samuel's greeting. "How's it going?""Same as yesterday. I called to tell you I'd be late again today.""Alright."She heard a door close and the jangling of keys. "Did you get home right now?""Yes. I spent some time with Peter at the mansion. We talked, and time escaped me.""I hope things are fine?""They are good.""Fine. See you later.""Take care."She placed her phone down and collapsed back on her seat. Even with all the work she had to do, her mind travelled back and forth between the present and the past. Samuel didn't say much about their run-in with Flora, and she didn't push him to. With his relationship, she only listened and gave as little of her opinion as possible. No matter how close they were as friends, she believed his decisions regarding the woman he loved were his and his alone.Flora had barely looked at them on the street. She said hello and goodbye, but there was no emotion behind her eyes. She might have reached the indifferenc

“Ember would be so disappointed in me. She taught me the steps, and somehow I mess it up after a week of her gone.”Samuel laughed. “I mean, you were juggling a lighter schedule then compared to now. Maybe you should return to the drawing board and see how to manage yourself while employed.”“I will. Thankfully, I was able to get something for tonight. Thanks for going with me.”“It was a pleasure.”He set the bags on the coffee table, and she took out the items they bought. First, from the flower shop, she got some hand-weaved baskets and a bunch of flowers to send to her sister on the anniversary of her parent’s death, which wasn’t too far away. She had also stopped by the mall to pick up

The water did little to help him, but he still cupped his hand underneath the rushing nuzzle, all the same. He waited for his palms to fill before splashing the water over his face. Kiss Kali had been a bad call. He couldn't make any excuses. The truth was he wanted to kiss her and saw no reason to stop when she kissed him first. Only he would do something as stupid as that when they needed to spend the entire evening together. She would be beside him because Ember wasn’t around to keep her company, and her sister had school.“You already did this. Don’t be a coward, and get out there.”He dried

"Good evening, ma'am." The young maid greeted them as she took their jackets."Are they already at the table?" Samuel asked."Yes. Peter would be down soon. He is the last one.""Thanks, Mindy." The maid scurried away, and Samuel looked at her. "Try and keep your head.""I promise nothing but to keep my sanity."

Samuel flicked the lights on as they entered the house. Kali walked behind him, pulling the band off her hair and massaging her scalp with a groan. Dinner had gone swimmingly. Exactly how they expected it to go. What was clear tonight was how enthused his mother was with whatever went on at the table. Throughout the dinner, he saw through her façade of disgruntled matriarch to the woman who relished the tarnishing of Kali’s character.“All that time spent on the road reminding me to be calm tonight, and you end up losing your cool.” Kali grinned as they dragged themselves into the living room.

Samuel left for his lunch break early the next day to meet his mother at home. It didn’t surprise him to receive her call. It had taken three days more than he expected, but it came nonetheless. He had arrived on time at the mansion, noticing that none of the other cars were around. The garage was being cleaned, and he couldn’t see any other cars except his mothers. That meant his father and Giovanna had also stepped out for the day.For the next three weeks, there were no dinners or parties planned except for Kali’s birthday. His mother turned down the invitation, claiming she already made plans for that day months ago, which was alright with him. He told Kali she would do that. And no doubt fine with Kali. For the next three weeks, he had

The phone was ringing. Kali moaned, turning away and tucking herself into a more comfortable position in the sheets. She wasn't ready to get out of bed and begin another work day, and from a quick peek at her surroundings, she knew she had more time. It was still dark out, and the weather made it easier to be lulled back into sleep. It took a while for her brain to catch up and realise that the ringing wasn't her alarm. It was someone calling her phone. She sat up, kicking the blanket off and crawling over to snatch her phone from the nightstand. It was Samuel."Hello?""You need to get down here."She dug her knuckles into her eyes and yawned loud and long. "Samuel, it's five thirty. What are you doing out of bed so early?""I heard a noise and came down to check. I need you to come down with the bug spray from the bathroom."She groaned, dragging herself out of bed and walking to the bathroom to get what he asked. "What kind of bug makes e

After a tedious week, nearly ruined by the appearance of Richard, Kali was finally ready to celebrate her long-awaited birthday party. Samuel was, once again, her sister's go-to guy for planning, so he promptly blindfolded her in the driveway of their house. Her fingers reached up, touching his knuckles when she got to her face, and he responded by gently slapping her hand away."Stand still.""Why am I being blindfolded?" She asked for the sixth time that morning, shuffling from one foot to the other. "It's not a surprise party.""If it were a surprise party, blindfolding you will give it away."She stuck her tongue in her cheek, waiting for him to finish while regretting the choice to wear heels on her dress. Kali had no idea he would blindfold her first when she picked out the golden heels she thought went well with the snugly fit emerald green dress she picked for the party. A pair of white sneakers would have worked just as well since she wouldn't see the ground for a time."There

Samuel looked at the restaurant as he stood against his car. It had been a month since his grandfather passed, and things in his family were still not back to normal. His father had forgiven him for his part in the lie, and he also forgave Kali because he believed they were pushed against the wall. But whatever quarrel he had with their mother was still going on. He had tried to talk himself out of tonight with the excuse of waiting for things to cool down. But, he decided against it.He looked back when he heard another car approaching. Sure enough, Mathew was driving to park beside him with Kali in the passenger seat. She waved at him, and he winked in reply. He called earlier to ask her to prepare."Hello." She greeted as she stepped out of the car. "I was surprised to get your call.""I thought you would be." He took her hand and kissed her. "You look lovely.""Thank you. I wore something stunning, as you asked.""Thank you, Mathew

Samuel looked down at Kali as she slept, stretched out underneath the duvet. She had slept through the night and barely flinched when he got her out of the pool and to their room. She was exhausted, and he understood why. He decided to end the façade once and for all, so while he faced his family, he wanted her to rest.Samuel kissed her cheek softly before he left the house and headed for his parents. Luckily for him, everyone was present when he arrived. They were still slow from waking up, but they gathered around the table.“Is something wrong?” His father spoke first, taking a generous gulp from his cup of coffee.“Not anymore.”“What do you want to talk about then.”Samuel had not taken his eyes off his mother since she joined them. When he saw that she was slowly figuring out what he was there to do, he gave her a little smile before turning to a drowsy Giovanna.“Gio, you were right ab

Flora looked up at the house, trembling with anxiety and incredibly confused. The man who drove her to the home was as silent as a graveyard with a hard and unassuming stare. He didn’t even say a word when she turned her panicked eyes on him. He only indicated that she continued up the stairs. She had asked before what Claudius wanted to meet her, but the man had only grumbled, so she decided to follow his lead and walk into the house. He handed her over to a maid, who took her purse and jacket. She took Flora to a brightly lit room.“Mr. Devon?” The maid called, closing the door softly. He coughed, struggling to get comfortable on the bed. She rushed to help him. She adjusted his pillows and made him as comfortable as possible.“Please sit.” He wheezed, pointing to a chair in front of the bed.Flora carefully sat down, looking at the mass of machines connected to him. “Thank you. I am sorry. I had no idea you we

When Samuel arrived in the evening, he was surprised by Kali at the door. She jumped out of the shadows, scaring him before throwing herself in his arms. He caught her, bellowing with laughter as they kissed."I would assume your day went well?""I believe it did, but that's not why I am happy. I am happy to have you home."Samuel set her back on her feet and noticed the scarf she held in her hands."Are you cold?""No. It's for you.""Me?""Yes. For your eyes, darling."He complied, closing his eyes and allowing her to wrap the scarf around his head, sealing him in darkness. He followed her cautiously as she led him up the stairs and into their room. He scolded her lightheartedly when the door smacked into his chest."Hey!""Sorry." She stressed and led him still. "Sorry. We are here."She took the scarf off and stepped back. He kept his eyes closed, opening them carefully so he wasn't dazzled by the light

Kali looked up at the house. If she could even call it that. Something about this family made them hungry for prime real estate. From the marble fountains to the immaculate shrubs and garden, the manor looked like it could have been owned by an Earl or a Duke. Kali wouldn't be surprised if she was told the building used to belong to one."Mrs. Madden?" Kali turned to the maid. "Are you looking for someone?"She stuttered, finding herself as she got out of the car. "Yes. I am looking for Mr. Devon.""Alright. Please come in." She began to walk Kali towards the house. "He hasn't been in the best health these past few weeks. I'll tell him you are here to see him, but I can't promise he would agree to sit with you. He hasn't had visitors in weeks.""That's alright. If he won't see me, I'll leave a message."She had come prepared for any event. She'd prefer to say all she had to to his face. If he refused, she had typed and printed a detailed letter exp

Kali walked into her sister's apartment. She had planned to visit her earlier but kept pushing the date back until she couldn't anymore. June was home, and Kali left work early to catch her sister before it was too late. Samuel had taken the first step with Ember, and it was her turn.If she waited, who's to tell what Ysabel might do? Just as she informed Kali about Richard as a desperate attempt to cause a rift between them, she might say something to June one of these days."I am glad you came. Sit. Can I get you anything?" June asked.

Kali woke up early and slid out of bed while Samuel was still asleep. She walked around the apartment quietly. After the previous day's events, she was exhausted and starving. She wanted to stuff herself with whatever she could find in the kitchen."Morning."Kali looked over her shoulder, scared. "Oh, Ember. It's you.""Sorry to scare you.""It's alright. I was about to rummage through your kitchen for something to eat. Would you like to join me?""Sure."Kali was nervous. She had forgotten most of her conversation with Samuel because her brain was still asleep. But after seeing Ember, Kali remembered Samuel had told her everything. She hoped Ember wasn't too angry or disappointed in her. She considered her a friend, and it would hurt to lose that."What do you want?""A sandwich is fine.""I am too hungry to show off, so what if I make us a simple sandwich for today?""I'll take it."Kali prepared s
