Vanda opened her mouth to say something, but I interrupted by handing her a sandwich. I kept my tone soft, sounding as concerned as I could as I said, "I noticed you haven't eaten all day, so I got this for you."

She did not take it and instead gave me a suspicious glance. "I'm not hungry."

I forced a worried look, though inwardly I scoffed6. "Come on, eat something. You've been skipping meals, and it's not good for your health."

Vanda turned her head away, refusing to respond. She kept her gaze fixed on the ceiling, completely ignoring me.

Just then, a nurse walked in carrying another sandwich. She chimed in, "Dr. Watson, you really need to eat. Skipping meals isn't good for the baby!"

"Here, take mine," the nurse offered, holding it out to her.

Vanda hesitated, glancing between the sandwich in the nurse's hand and the one I offered. Sensing her indecision, I said, "You shouldn't starve your baby just to prove a point to me. Eat something, okay?"

She touched her stomach and

"Dead? What do you mean?" I asked, stunned. Before I could process her words, Vanda stormed toward me, grabbing my collar and screaming with a crazed expression, "If I don't have his child, his mother will throw me out!"I won't get a single penny! Why do you get to have everything while I'm left with nothing?!" Her sudden outburst caught me off guard, and I shoved her hands off me, stepping back in disbelief. I could not help but laugh bitterly at her twisted logic. "Vanda, are you even listening to yourself? You stole my child, and now you're acting like I'm the one taking everything from you? I'm the victim here!" Before she could respond, my phone buzzed. It was a message from the old woman."The switch is taking effect. Stay hidden."Panic set in as I glanced around the room. Vanda had locked the door, and she was guarding it like a rabid dog. How was I supposed to escape?Just then, I heard a commotion outside. The nurse's trembling voice said, "Dr. Watson is in there,

I'm at the supermarket when an old woman I don't know suddenly grips my hand tightly. I instinctively shielded my pregnant belly, but she exclaimed, "Someone's cursed your pregnancy with a swap spell, and the stillborn fetus inside you is about to start feeding off your body." Just as I thought she was another scammer, she added, "You should try to throw up as much of that fish you just ate as you can."..."Fish?" I blurted out, covering my mouth in shock. I had indeed eaten fish just moments ago, and my mind raced as I wondered how she could possibly know that. I took a cautious step back, glaring at her as I felt she was just some con artist targeting me. Before I could say anything, she placed her hand right on my stomach, ignoring my reaction. I tried to push her away, but somehow, I could not move—it was like I was frozen in place, forced to let her bony fingers search over my belly. "Oh my! What blasphemy! This is unbelievable!" she exclaimed, jerking her hand back as

An hour later, the doctor returned with my ultrasound results. He seemed troubled, as if he was trying hard to find the right words to break the news to me.My heart sank as I snatched the report from his hand. Boldly printed at the top were the words: "Embryonic Demise.""Ms. Sinclair, it seems your pregnancy stopped progressing about a week ago. At five months, it would be best to…" he began, but I could not hear the rest. My mind buzzed loudly, drowning out his voice. I stumbled out of the room and ran to the street, collapsing onto the curb as tears streamed uncontrollably down my face.I could not believe that my pregnancy had stopped a week ago. Just two days ago, Vanda had told me my baby was perfectly healthy. I refused to believe this was happening to me. There was no way I lost my baby just like that. How could Vanda be so cruel and do this to me?Suddenly, I thought about what the old woman had said. The old woman said, "The spirit of the stillborn will tell her where you are."As she spoke, she plunged her fingers into the clay jar and stirred the blackened soil. Before long, a few shiny, oily insects crawled out from between her fingers. I felt a shiver run down my spine. Then, she crushed the insects in her hand and sprinkled their remains into a glass of clear water before handing it to me. She commanded, "Drink this."I hesitated, but the old woman explained, "Even curses have weaknesses. Drinking this will temporarily suppress the evil spirit inside you."I gulped anxiously. Just then, another text from Vanda popped up on my phone: "I'll be there in 15 minutes!"Terrified, I quickly downed the water in one gulp. "What about my baby?" I asked, my voice trembling. "How do I bring my baby back?" The old woman's expression darkened. "The spirit of the stillborn is under her control, so we can't bring it back yet. You need to retrieve the controlling insect from her first a

I forced myself to stay calm before turning to face Vanda. Then, I purposely raised my voice just enough for the people around us to hear. "What are you talking about, Vanda? I have no idea what you mean!"Vanda glared at me, her voice sharp and deliberate. "I asked my coworkers. None of them saw you yesterday!"I swallowed hard, taking a step back. "Oh, I must've mixed things up. I went to a few places yesterday—maybe I got confused."Vanda's eyes widened with fury. Even though she was mad, she could not do anything to me with so many people watching. With one final glare, she headed toward her office. This was the exact moment I was waiting for. In one swift motion, I grabbed the collar of her shirt and yanked it upward. There it was—a fat, disgusting black bug clinging to her back, about the size of my palm. It was squirming desperately, trying to burrow into her skin. The sight made my stomach churn.Screams erupted from the crowd around us. A middle-aged woman near me

I checked the time—Hector should have already left for work. Taking a deep breath, I muttered, "I'll go back and find it now."Once home, I ran straight to the bedroom and started searching. I rummaged through drawers, checked under the bed, and combed through the closet. I turned every possible hiding spot inside out, yet there was nothing.Exhausted and overwhelmed, I slumped to the floor, my thoughts spiraling into chaos. Then, I suddenly remembered what the old woman had said—the Twin Hex insects needed blood to survive.Gritting my teeth, I grabbed the small knife from my bag. With trembling hands, I drew the blade across my finger, opening a shallow cut. Blood pooled quickly, dripping onto the hardwood floor. I held my breath and listened intently, waiting for any sign of movement. Before long, I heard a faint sound echoing from the wall, like something crawling. As I turned to the source of the voice, I noticed it was coming from behind the large wedding portrait of Hector

"One day?" I gasped, my heart racing. "What will happen to Vanda after the baby is switched back?"The old woman narrowed her eyes. "The dead fetus has consumed a lot of these cursed insects and was under her control for some time. It's developed a connection to her. Once it's switched back, it'll parasitize her instead." She continued with a grim tone. "Either she'll live for a few years in agony with the dead fetus inside her, or she'll attempt to have it removed. But if she does, the fetus will leave her body—and take her life with it." I stayed quiet, unsure how to respond, but she must have mistaken my hesitation for pity. The old woman added, "Right now, the fetus hasn't fully attached to you. If you go for an abortion now, you might still survive—and she won't die, either." I clenched my fists and shook my head firmly. "No. I want my baby back! I don't care what happens to her! What should I do now?"The old woman took out some black jars and muttered something. Then
