Triana
A black horse-drawn carriage, accompanied by ten mounted guards, sped along the road that cut through the lush forest.
Inside the constantly creaking and rattling carriage, a girl with skin like a field of snow under the morning sun kept peering out the window, only to swallow her saliva for the umpteenth time.
Since birth, Triana had always been in the comfortable, protective embrace of her parents. Castles, palaces, and other beautiful buildings were places she should visit. Roads that were neatly paved were what her soft feet should tread upon. She wasn't even allowed to leave her castle before the sunset, when the sky darkened.
But now, Triana sat alone in a carriage, traveling on a muddy and rocky road that cut through the most feared forest in Galvadea, the Dark Forest. An invitation from the king required her mother to accompany her father to the palace as a form of respect. Additionally, visiting the witch to ask for eternal beauty was a secret between Triana and her parents, unknown even to her two sisters.
Witches were always hated and feared. Most were even burned alive by the villagers if caught. Collaborating with a witch would tarnish the Galev family's name in the eyes of people, including the king.
Aside from the worries and fears of what was to come, most of Triana's thoughts were filled with questions she wanted to push away but couldn't seem to shake.
If she may ask, why exactly did she have to do all this? Was it her true self that people cherished all this time, or just her beauty?
Triana shook her head again. 'Stop those thoughts, Triana! Father and mother love you. Everyone loves you. They want you to maintain your beauty because they want to see you happy.'
After hours of traveling that made Triana's bottom sore and her head bump several times, she felt her carriage stop. A knock on the carriage door followed.
"Lady, we have arrived."
The carriage door opened, and Triana cautiously stuck her head out, only to meet a blast of cold air against her half-braided hair.
"This... is the place, isn’t it?" She asked, though she knew the answer.
"Yes, My Lady. This is Tevac Castle." Replied the head guard, extending his hand.
After swallowing, Triana placed her hand in his. "Thank you, Grivin," she said after stepping onto the ground.
"The castle is surrounded by powerful curses. Even its front gate has been left open. Are you sure we can enter?" Grivin asked.
"The witch said that the castle's protective magic only applies to vampires and other witches," Triana replied, staring at the slightly small but towering castle building standing before them. Then she muttered with a trembling voice, "I'm not even sure anyone could live in there."
Accompanied by five guards, Triana entered the castle, which was filled with thick cobwebs and flying bats. Two guards carried lanterns to illuminate their pitch-black path.
They descended the stairs until they reached the dungeon. The Grivin reopened the map that was sketched on a piece of paper by the witch. Then he led the way to an iron door with a small barred window in the middle.
"This is his prison," Grivin whispered.
Triana nodded. Her heart didn't stop pounding, and it only grew louder as they walked farther into the ominous castle.
"I see. Please open the door," Triana ordered.
Nodding, Grivin pushed the door open. The sound of rusty iron scraping against each other echoed in the empty and damp hallway, making anyone who heard it cringe.
Cold air and dampness greeted them. Though her feet wanted to run away, Triana had no choice but to step into that eerie room.
"The lantern, please," Triana said, holding out her hand to the side. One of the guards carrying a lantern nodded and handed it to Triana.
Holding her breath, Triana stepped further with the lantern hung in front of her body. The lantern's light slowly reached the end of the dark room.
Triana's hand trembled more as she saw three chains lying on the stone floor. Swallowing, she directed her lantern to follow the somewhat long chains until she stopped upon finding that they were bound to a pair of feet.
As the light moved higher, Triana's heart was squeezed tight as she found that the owner of those feet was a man who looked like a skeleton wrapped in wrinkled skin.
Bright brown eyes beamed at Triana. Those eyes seemed to shine in the darkness and were piercing as if they could read the thoughts of anyone they stared at.
Swallowing again, Triana, with cold and trembling hands, opened a small leather pouch attached to her slim waist. She pulled out a piece of paper and unfolded it. "Mr... V-Vlador Lev Dracount?"
The sleepy eyes blink slowly. Though his gaze was sharp, he seemed like a dying lion that had lost its teeth and claws to pounce on its prey.
"What brings you here?"
The heavy and somewhat hoarse voice made Triana look around. Then she realized that the voice came from the living skeleton wrapped in old, worn-out royal garments in front of her.
"Well… pardon," Triana coughed.
"My name is Triana Rexa Galev, the youngest daughter of The Duke of Karton. I came here to ask you to drink this." She pulled something else from her small pouch and then presented it to the terrifying-looking vampires.
A mocking laugh flowed from Vlador's dry and wrinkled lips. "You came to command me? What year is it now? It still seems like the old days; a beauty has a foolish mind."
Triana clenched her lips tightly. She had never received such a cruel insult from anyone. All her life, her ears had only heard thousands of praises.
A beauty has a foolish mind? Like in the old days? Don't tell her that all this time, people have thought her foolish behind her back?
But Triana quickly shook her head. She didn't have time anymore. This was the last night when the moon was full, which also forced her to come to this dreadful place without her parents' companion.
"Please help me, Mr. Dracount. You have to drink this. Giving you this potion is a condition for me to save my future." Triana pleaded as she showed the potion bottle to him.
The shining brown eyes moved to gaze at Triana's trembling, tiny hand in the air. Then his gaze returned to her blue eyes.
"Who sent you? Why should I drink that?" Vlador asked.
"It's... It's a witch. She said that... this potion will... um... make you young again," Triana answered.
Triana.Triana could hear the pounding of her heart. Without her consent, her eyes rolled sideways to avoid the gaze of the skull-faced vampire.‘Oh, God! I've never lied in my entire life! I truly apologize!’ Triana cried in her heart.Occasionally, Triana glanced at Vlador's face. She truly couldn't read the vampire's expression—not because of his cold demeanor, but because skulls don't have facial muscles to express. Even the man's lips didn't move when he spoke. He simply opened his mouth, and words miraculously escaped past his rows of teeth. The silence made Triana's hair stand on end. She didn't know what the vampire, who no longer spoke, was thinking. Was he suspicious of her? Well, who wouldn't be? She was foolish enough to claim that the potion would make him young again. The tale of the disappearance of the vampire race had been passed down through generations. Vampires perished after warring with humans, who were aided by witches. In other words, witches and vampires were a
TrianaThe vampire didn't lie. Throughout her life, Triana had never been scratched on her skin, let alone felt the stab of a knife. But now she was certain she didn't need to experience it firsthand to know how it felt. The sensation of burning, stinging, and throbbing pain made Triana grimace. Her hand gripped his shoulder, clinging to it just to understand what it felt like to grasp hard bones wrapped in cloth. As the sharp fangs dug deep enough to pierce Triana's blood vessels, Vlador pulled the fangs off and began sucking the blood flowing out of the newly formed holes.Fresh blood gushed out like a burst pipe once the fangs no longer blocked Triana's open wounds, yet the excruciating pain she had previously was improving.Triana thought her suffering had ended. She had heard it would last for a few minutes, but it seemed to only last for a few seconds. Unfortunately, Triana was relieved too soon. A soft, wet object swept over her wound, causing her body to jolt from the pain it i
TrianaJust like hers, Vlador's entire body glowed green, and it had just gone out.Unexpectedly, the magic that worked for Triana also worked simultaneously on the vampire in front of her, which was expected, considering that giving the magic potion to Vlador was indeed a requirement from the witch. But didn't the witch say that her magic potion would make the vampire who drank it feel like burning for three days? The witch’s words were far different from what was happening now.Vlador looked at his hands, which were no longer bound by chains. "My strength... it's returned," he muttered. As Vlador rose to his feet, all of Triana's guards drew their swords."Lady Triana, we must leave now!" Grivin said, grabbing Triana's upper arm.Awakened from her daze, Triana rose to her feet with a slightly swaying body as she had lost a lot of blood, making her dizzy and weak. She was escorted by her guards towards the door, but a strong wind suddenly blew from their backs, slamming the door shut.
TrianaVlador appeared strong and fresh. Thick black hair that was neatly arranged backward with thin strands hanging from his hairline to his cheekbones framed his stern face. He was indeed charming at first glance, but that didn't erase the fact that he was a monster who was about to kill Triana shortly."Your blood..."Vlador's voice made Triana nauseous. Her vision began to blur. Her knees trembled as the vampire took the first step toward her."... I can smell it, even from secluded places. It's so fragrant. It's the best blood that has ever flowed down my throat.""No..." Triana shook her head as she stepped back, only to bump her back against the horse behind her."Say your goodbye to this world, for soon your body will dry up like the leaves on autumn ground," Vlador said, dropping the body of a guard from his hand.In the blink of an eye, Vlador darted towards Triana, appearing as a fleeting shadow that then obscured her vision and made her head spin wildly. When she regained
TrianaHer body went rigid, as if every inch of her body had rusted and her muscles had frozen. Her heart raced, and her breath came out heavy. She wanted to flee, but even her fingers wouldn't budge as fear chained her soul.Vlador lowered one foot to step onto the bed where Triana lay, followed by both hands. He began to crawl over Triana's body until their faces met."Hh..." Triana whimpered. Her tongue was numb as Vlador brought his pale face close to her throbbing neck, causing her to turn her face to the side with tightly shut eyes.Triana's jaw tightened, and she clenched the bedsheets as she felt Vlador's lips press against the bite mark she believed was still open, sending a pang of ache and sting through her once more. But instead of a bite, Triana heard a long, strong exhale, causing her to peek slightly. Her brow furrowed as she realized Vlador was pulling his face away. Then a large hand with long nails gripped Triana's jaw, forcing her to look forward at the fierce face o
TrianaLocking her gaze on the furious vampire, Triana's heart pounded hard as she could sense the dark aura surrounding Vlador, though she was unable to see it directly with her eyes."Wh-what's the truth? What is happening to us?" Triana asked."That hag used her potion to curse us. I'll die if you die, and vice versa," Vlador explained.Triana's jaw dropped. She covered her mouth with her hand and concluded, "The witch has tied our lives together.""Not just our lives, Gosling. There's another curse that will torment me greatly. To stay alive, you must drink my blood at least every five days. And I will always crave yours," Vlador said, brushing aside the long hair framing Triana's face.Dropping her gaze to the floor, Triana tried to process the nonsensical situation. She had to drink a vampire's blood to stay alive? And the vampire whose blood she had to drink, craved her blood in return. Meanwhile, their lives were linked, so if she died, the vampire would also die. That meant th
Triana.A heavy, warm whisper tickled Triana's ears, sending shivers down her spine. Then she felt Vlador swing their bodies sideways and tumble out, defying the wind with their heads facing downward. They fell. Vlador carried Triana plummeting from the highest peak of the castle towards the hard ground below. The stirred sensation in her stomach, chest, and neck rendered her unable to scream, especially with her head positioned downward, as if her brain were being pulled by gravity towards her stomach. Her hands gripped the shirt that enfolded the vampire's body that was enveloping her. She could only surrender. She didn't understand Vlador's purpose in doing this. Did he want them to die together?Briefly, Triana opened her eyes a little to peek and caught a glimpse of trees with their branches passing her by vertically at high speed.‘I don't want to die. Father, mother... I want to go home,’ Triana cried inwardly. The sensation of falling grew stronger, making it difficult for Tria
Triana.Vlador's arm that encircled Triana's waist loosened, and finally, both of her feet touched the ground. As Vlador released his grip, Triana fell to her knees, her body trembling. Just moments ago, she had so much joy in flying through the sky, but now she was truly grateful to be able to touch the ground again. The heavy footsteps passing by caught Triana's attention. She found Vlador walking towards the witch's hut, located a few meters ahead of them.Triana's eyes widened, her jaw unconsciously dropping. It was the first time she had seen the complete form of a vampire's wings. In her teenage years, she had seen vampire wings at the Rotherez Kingdom palace. It was a pair of vampire wings displayed on the wall of the palace's grand dining room. At that time, King Rotherez proudly said that the vampire wings were severed directly by his grandfather before killing the vampire they had captured in a hunt a hundred and fifty years ago.Triana never expected that the fresh vampire w
VladorHis gaze followed Frederick as he made his way to his seat. Once the man settled into his chair, his attention shifted to Triana, who pressed her lips together. As he had suspected, Frederick was trying to manipulate Triana. At least she was sharp enough to grasp the situation and keep her words to a minimum, even though the vampires treated her kindly—a kindness that was nothing more than a facade.Vlado knew exactly how vampires viewed humans, and he was certain that the Verdonix clan was responsible for the killings of Verxic’s people, not wild animals."I was wondering if you’ve ever encountered the Elix witches on this island."Vlador’s sudden question silenced everyone at the table, including Frederick, who exchanged looks wit
Vlador"Welcome to the Verdonix Mansion, Prince Vlador. Allow me to introduce myself. I am Frederick Garvus Verdonix, the head of the Verdonix clan. We are truly honored that you’ve chosen to visit our humble mansion."Vlador remained silent, staring at the blonde man from head to toe. The man, with faint lines around his eyes, was the same height as him. His eyes were red but not glowing—similar to Dyan's."I need not say that your demeanor feels... odd, do I?" Vlador asked."Oh… haha..." Frederick let out a chuckle, then nodded. "Such a judgment is well deserved, prince. I apologize for any confusion our actions may have caused."The man then extended one arm and shifted to the side. “How if I explain everything during dinner?"Frederick’s offer was met by silence from Vlador. He fixed his gaze on the man’s eyes. It was clear to the vampire clan that Vlador didn't trust them simply because they were vampires.Clearing his throat, Frederick continued, "I understand you have some ques
TrianaHer tears eventually fell.Triana nodded. “I understand. Thank you for answering my question.”Without waiting for Vlador's response, she turned and hurried away from the man who remained rooted in place. As her tears continued to flow, Triana pressed on. Foolishly, she still hoped that Vlador would chase after her. She yearned for the cold-hearted man, who had never desired her from the beginning. She loved Vlador. She acknowledged it and screamed it silently in her heart. She longed to remain with him, aware that he regarded her merely as a companion on his journey. Yet, was that not enough to warrant her continued presence by his side?Triana refused to return to her family. She knew that their treatment of h
Vlador“So, you’re saying that the civilization of this island exists only in this small community?” Vlador asked.Rextov raised an eyebrow and nodded. “The good news is that we live harmoniously in this small community.”“Coincidentally, we came to this city in search of a family. They have hair as white as snow and eyes as blue as glaciers. Have you seen anyone matching that description here?” Vlador inquired.“Well, that’s quite unusual. I’ve never seen anyone like that, not even in this city,” Rextov replied while stroking his chin.“Are you sure?” Vlador pressed. “My parents said they should have lived on this ice plain for a long time.”“For how long, exactly?” Rextov countered. “I was born and raised here. My ancestors were natives. Most people on this island have blonde or red hair. Perhaps the family you’re looking for are newcomers, not the old residents of this city.”Rextov’s explanation silenced Vlador. He couldn’t provide further details that might raise suspicions about
Triana“What are you doing?” Vlador asked.“Repaying a favor,” Triana replied, blinking.Taking a deep breath, Vlador said, “Pull your hand back. I need you to do something other than give your blood.”“O-oh,” Triana retracted her arm. Her heart began to race, and she cleared her throat. “What is it you need more… than blood?”“Teach me the languages you know; for example, the language spoken by the two men who made you cry,” Vlador said.“Oh,” Triana chuckled. “Certainly. I would be happy to teach you, Mr. Vlador.”“Good. Now, move away.” Vlador ordered as he stood up and walked towar
VladorIn Triana’s room, he was watching her endless cry. “I’ve killed someone. I made four children lose their mother. I’m a criminal. I’m a murderer,” Triana sobbed. Sighing, Vlador glanced at the soaking-wet handkerchief in Triana’s hand. “The sun has set. How long do you plan to cry?” “I... can’t stop,” Triana replied, breathless. “It’s my fault, Mr. Vlador. I’m terrified.” “That’s just one person dead out of the dozens who healed. Aren’t you being overdramatic?” Vlador frowned as Triana looked at him with her swollen eyes. “One person, you say? To those who didn’t know her, she might be just one person, but she meant everything to her family.” “Gosling,” Vlador sighed. “That woman is dead. She won’t come back to life, no matter how much you cry. You’re just wasting your time and exhausting yourself. You’re doing something futile and pointless.” Triana fell silent, squinting her eyes. “You don’t need to clarify that. I can’t control my feelings!” Clenching his jaws
53. Triana She let down her long hair while staring at her reflection in the mirror. She still didn't understand why she cried and said strange things earlier. She squeezed her eyes shut, trying to remember what she had dreamt that made her babble. "It was a bad dream. I can still feel the sadness and fear from it," Triana murmured, then opened her eyes again. "But I don't remember the content of the dream at all." She clicked her tongue and shook her head. "Never mind. There's no point in recalling it. As Mr. Vlador said, it’s just a side effect of the curse." Triana then submerged both her hands in the basin of water under the mirror. She almost yelped as the cold water froze her hands. But still, she used it to wash her face. After refreshing her face and body, Triana changed from her men's outfit into a warm woman's dress. Though it was a simple dress, it was certainly much more elegant than the loose trousers and shirt she had been wearing. A smile spread across Triana's l
TrianaThe blue bird shone brightly in her hand. Her eyes fluttered as she gazed at it.Pretty jewelry was not unusual for Triana. She owned chests of exquisite and luxurious jewelry and trinkets in her castle. But a brooch sold at the Harbour Market was different. It wasn't just pretty; it was beautiful."I didn’t know he was watching me," Triana murmured. A faint smile spread across her lips.Rising from her chair, she reached the window and opened it wide. The sea wind blew fiercely, tossing her long hair. The sea looked as if it was blending with the blue sky. Although they had just left the land, it seemed the strong wind pushed their ship faster.Holding the bird brooch up, Triana smiled again as she matched its blue shade with the colors of the sea and sky. The more she thought about it, the more she realized Vlador was not the cruel man people said he was. If he were keeping her because of their curse, that beautiful brooch wouldn’t be in her hand.If Triana hadn’t visited the
VladorA sly smile formed on his lips. He opened her fingers and lifted her index finger from the row.He stared at the tip of her tiny finger and pinched it, causing it to redden. Then he brought it close to his mouth and bit it with his fang."Ah!" Triana almost pulled her hand back."The blood's oozing out," Vlador said."Please hurry up so I can go to sleep," Triana said without looking at Vlador."I thought you had trouble sleeping tonight?" Vlador responded with a small chuckle before sucking on the finger.Closing her eyes tightly, Triana turned her head away. She almost turned her back on Vlador, though her hand remained in his grasp.A tiny hole at the tip
