Skylar's POV
We rode silently in the carriage.
My hands were folded on my lap and I threw my gaze out the window, watching the trees brush by.
Staring out the transparent glass was not enough distraction for me. Alpha Devon's scent filled the air of the carriage and I basically breathed it in.
He was my mate. It was undebatable. My wolf had sniffed him but how? I thought the Moon Goddess had cursed me not to ever have any mate for the rest of my life? Did Alora lie? But priests of the Goddess were forbidden to lie or cheat and face certain death so did the Goddess lie? But the Divine doesn't lie. Ugh, thinking about it was giving me a migraine.
“Can you stop doing that?” I heard him ask and turned to face him.
“Doing what?” I asked, confused. The only thing I was doing was breathing. Did he have a problem with that?
“Nevermind.” He looked away, not saying a word.
I wondered why he was acting differently. Just a second ago, he had slaughtered the mad man of the North like he was nothing and taken me but now, he was acting like a jerk.
What changed?
Devon's pov
I slammed the door of the carriage and down beside that idiot would ask me another question.
Just what the hell was that?
My wolf recognized hers as my mate? That was impossible.
I don't understand why the Moon goddess would pair me up with a mate that is cursed and is the cause of the deaths across all packs.
I muttered to myself as I walked into the packhouse. “No. I believe the Moon Goddess is playing games with me.”
“S…Sir!” The idiot called for me again and I ignored her, slipping into an office and bolting the door.
She didn't relent. She kept banging her fists on the door. “I have to talk to you “
I ignored her, trying to take off my coat and shoes. This part of the South was too hot and I was sweaty.
“Sir Alpha.” The idiot kept knocking and it jarred at my nerves.
I slammed my fist on the desk and walked to the door. I held it open and dragged her inside, slamming it shut behind her.
Before she could say another word, I pounded my fist on the wall next to her head and she flinched.
“The next time you disturb my peace,” I pulled my hand from the hole it made in the wall and showed it to her. “This will go into your face.”
Her eyes grew misty and soon, they began to fill. Good, I had made her scared.
“Get out.” I pulled away from her.
“Don't say that to your mate.” She said, startling me. She felt it too.
I whipped around to catch her fisting her wedding gown at her sides. “I am your mate.”
“Are you?” I quirked an eyebrow. “You think because a whiff of lavender and wildberries that I'm your mate? Hmm? Skylar, is it?”
She swallowed hard, struggling to speak.
“I thought so too.” I turned away to leave but she caught the sleeve of my shirt.
“Please…” she sniffled shortly.
I caught her wrist and pushed her hand away. “ I am not your mate!”
She protested stubbornly. “You are!”
“If I am then I reject you!” I roared.
Her hand fisted her chest and she fell on her knees. The mating bond tends to have a side effect when unlinked such as chest pain and sometimes, heart ache.
“How could the Moon Goddess be so cruel to make me mates with you?” I looked at her crumpled form on the ground.
“Hey, I joined her on the ground and fisted her hair. “Making me mates with you was a mistake on the Goddess’ part but don't worry, I've rectified the problem. People like you will be forever mateless. No wolf would want to mate with you. Didn't your failure to complete the ritual lead to the death of thousands? You should never have existed!”
I gave her a light push. “Get yourself out of here!”
She quickly gathered herself and scrambled out of the room.
I exhaled sharply and dragged my hand through my hair. “Oh, damn.”
I relaxed onto the couch. “Ethan!”
Ethan appeared in the center of the room with a bow. “Yes, Alpha.”
“Drag that asshole here. Now!”
A few seconds later, Ethan appeared with Jasper.
“Y - - Your Grace, you're here.” He stuttered like the worm he was.
“You think this is a joke?” I raised an eyebrow.
The man rose to his feet and bowed. “I'm sorry, Your Grace.”
I crossed one leg over the other and leaned back. “Why am I here, Jasper?”
Jasper looked at Ethan before he finally replied. “I sent you a letter seeking help because our enemies plan to usurp the throne from under us.”
“And what did I tell you?” I curled an eyebrow.
“You said you would merge the SilverMoon pack with yours.” Jasper whispered this time.
“Good.” I leapt to my feet and pocketed my hands. “So why is that little idiot my mate?”
For a second, Jasper was confused. “I don't understand.”
“The one they call Skylar White.” I rolled my eyes.
“She cannot be your mate. It must be some kind of mistake,” Jasper chuckled nervously. “How could he ever be mates to an alpha when she was a low life omega, a slave.”
His answer satisfied me. “Excellent.”
“Anything else, Your Grace?” Jaosee asked.
“Yes,” I smiled at him. “We will begin plans to merge both packs and condemn Skylar White to a life of misery.”
As I had said, I made my promise. I made sure to humiliate and punish Skylar White for the nuisance she was. The thought of her remaining in this pack as a slave was jarring at my thoughts so I decided to change that.
I invited Jasper to my office and told him about it.
“I will be returning to my pack soon and I'll be taking Skylar with me.” I said, waiting for any reaction from him. None came.
“Skylar White is all yours, Your Grace.” Jasper said with a bow.
“Good.” I leaned back into my seat and smiled. A green pair of eyes met mine and they widened.
“Why don't you join us, Dear Skylar?” I rose to my feet.
Jasper panicked. “She heard us.”
“Don’t worry.” I made my way to the door. “She wouldn't dare run.”
