Staring at the contract Alex had given her, Lauren perched on the edge of her bed. Her mind was racing, and the words appeared to blur. She was shocked by what she was reading.
Earlier that night, Alex had said icily, "Sign this." "To make sure we both get what we need, it's just a simple agreement."
She remembered their chat, and her hands shook. She recalled how she had glanced up at him, expecting to see a human face, but his expression was unreadable.
Flashback: Lauren paused before saying, "You can't expect me to just agree to this." She looked over the terms of the contract as she held it in her hands.
Alex's face remained unchanged. He remarked, "You stole my money to save your mother." "This is the cost you incur. Lauren, it's a commercial transaction. Not much more.
"A business deal?" she repeated, her tone tinted with disbelief. "Alex, you're discussing our life. This is not only a transaction.
His blue, piercing eyes met hers as he wheeled closer. "In my universe, everything is a deal. You ought to adjust to it.
Lauren gripped the contract more tightly and shook her head. Her voice was hardly audible above a whisper as she stated, "I need time to think."
Alex had reclined in his seat, his eyes fixed on her. "Take as much time as you require," he said. "But be aware that I have a limit to my patience."
Lauren took a long breath and put the contract down, bringing herself back to the present. She felt imprisoned, like a piece in an incomprehensible game. However, she was certain that she couldn't make a snap judgment.
"I need to go through this," she muttered to herself. "For me and my mother."
There was a gentle knock on Lauren's door, interrupting her thoughts. After hesitating, she yelled, "Enter now."
Clara came in, looking concerned yet sympathetic. "Are you okay, Mrs. Magnus? You've spent some time in here".
Lauren made an effort to grin. "I'm all right, Clara. Just pondering."
Clara gave a nod. "Tell me if you need anything at all. We'll be serving dinner shortly".
"I'm grateful," Lauren murmured. Lauren looked at the document again as Clara walked away. She needed to get her thoughts straight for the time being, but she couldn't escape it long.
Lauren made the decision to divert her attention the following morning in order to decompress. She lingered around the yard, taking in the tranquil surroundings and the flowers. She felt comfortable there, one of the few spots in the Magnus home.
Clara smiled kindly at her as she strolled amid the roses. "Greetings, Mrs. Magnus. Having fun in the garden?"
Lauren smiled back. "Yes, the scenery is lovely. It helps my ability to think."
Clara gave a nod. "It has always been a unique location. This garden was a favourite of Mr Magnus's mother. She worked on it for hours."
Lauren became interested. "His mom? How did she behave?"
Clara's face became softer. "She was a good-hearted woman. And strong. Much of this family's heritage was created by her. Despite his reluctance to admit it, Alex is very much like her".
Lauren reflected on Alex's reserved manner and the anguish she had seen in his eyes. "He's complicated," she muttered.
Clara laughed. "That is one way to put it. However, he is not as frigid as he appears. All he needs is someone to tell him to have faith".
Lauren nodded, her mind racing. Perhaps Alex was more complex than she had thought. Could she, however, get past the barriers he had put up?
Clara gave her arm a light pat. "Mrs. Magnus, you're good for him. I see it. Give it some time".
Lauren gave a small smile. "Clara, thank you. That is very significant".
Lauren remained in the yard, deep in thought, as Clara departed. Though she wasn't sure if Alex would ever let her in, she wanted to think that she could change his life.
Lauren accepted Alex's invitation to lunch in the dining room later that day. Though taken aback by the gesture, she accepted it in the hopes that it would lead to a conversation.
Lauren eventually plucked up the nerve to speak while they ate in silence. "Alex, regarding the contract..."
His expression was opaque as he put down his fork and turned to face her. "How about it?"
She said, "I need to know why you're doing this." "Why me? Why this setup?
Alex's eyes narrowed slightly as he sat back in his chair. "Lauren, I've already explained it. I needed stability, and you needed assistance".
"Why me, though?" she asked. "There must have been other choices."
Alex's mouth clenched. Simply put, "because you were there." "And because I was intrigued by you."
Unexpectedly, Lauren blinked. "Caught your attention? How?"
He looked off into the distance and shrugged. "You're unique. You never act like someone you're not. Lauren, the majority of individuals in my environment are dishonest. You are truthful, even when it is challenging".
Lauren was at a loss for words. She had anticipated that he would dismiss her, not reveal something so... exposed.
"Alex," she said quietly, "I don't want this to be a simple transaction. I'm trying to figure out how to make this work for us both".
Once again, his face was unreadable as he gazed at her. Finally, he responded, "We'll see," and went back to eating.
Lauren heard heated voices as she passed Alex's study that evening. After a moment of hesitation, her curiosity overcame her and she took a step closer.
"Jake, you've gone too far," Alex said in a stern and irate tone. "You will be sorry if you interfere with my affairs."
Jake's voice came back mockingly smooth, "Come on, Alex." "I only have your best interests in mind. That is what families are meant to do, isn't it?"
"Don't make fun of me," Alex yelled. "You only have your interests in mind."
Jake's voice trailed off after a pause. "All right. But when everything falls apart, don't claim I didn't warn you".
With her heart pounding, Lauren took a step back as the door opened. Jake walked out with a smirk that vanished as soon as he noticed her. He snarled, "Are we listening in?"
"I wasn't," Lauren blurted out. "I just happened to walk by."
Jake gave a gloomy laugh. "Little wife, you're in over your head. Don't claim I didn't alert you."
Lauren was shaken as he left. She turned to face Alex, who was observing her with an expression that was impossible to read.
He whispered, "Lauren, go to bed." "It's late."
Lauren gave a nod and walked away, but she couldn't stop thinking about it. What was Jake trying to say? And why did Alex appear to be so intent on avoiding her? She was certain that the struggle she had found herself in was only getting started.

Melissa opened her eyes to the sun shining in, she rolled off the side where the sun had set on her bed and groaned. She was just beginning to enjoy her sleep but unluckily for her, someone just ruined it. She lay on the bed with her eyes open boiling in anger. She sat up after some minutes with her hair all over her face, frowned, and used her hand to brush them backward. She was glaring at the maid in front of her, who had annoyed her already without knowing. “Did you do that on purpose?” Melissa asked. The maid opened her mouth to say something, but nothing came out.“What do you mean ma'am?” The maid managed to gather some meaningful words together. “You knew opening the curtain would make the sun enter my eyes, and you went ahead to do so.” Melissa asked. “I am sorry ma'am, I was only following your orders,” the maid said in fear. “My orders” Melissa MumbledShe stood up from the bed, glaring at the maid. Lauren, the daughter of Mr McCarthy, he is also Melissa's father. They both have the same father, that's why lauren is being treated like trash and as a maid in the house because they believed she was born out of wedlock and she and her mother were not worthy to be in their family. She knew of all these but didn't bother or try to leave because she knew they were the only ones that could help in paying for her mother's surgery. Her mother had been on the sick bed, and her condition was getting worse every day, with lauren not being able to pay the surgery money. She left the house late in the evening and went to the hospital her mum was admitted. Even though she was treated like a maid there, she was allowed to leave the house whenever she wanted. She was told that the doctor had asked of her, and she went straight to his office. She opened the door and greeted the doctor in charge, who quickly offered her a seat. “I am glad you are here, I was about to tell the nurse in charge of
Lauren cleaned her tears and checked the time. She saw it was leading to the afternoon, and she knew the family would have gone to take care of their own businesses. So she left the hospital and boarded a cab back home with the intention of meeting Mrs McCarthy. Since she wasn't in the family meeting, she thought she could talk to her to see if she would help her.The cab stopped in front of the house, and Lauren ran inside. She stumbled on the maids. It looked like she was the one they had been waiting for. They stood at the kitchen door waiting and glaring at her. It seemed like they had planned what they would do to her. “Do you think you are some special kid all because you are an illegitimate child of McCarthy?” One of them asked. “What are you talking about? Lauren asked. “You refused to do your appointed work. Instead, you chose to run around skipping work.” Another maid said. “I was busy, and I always do my work, I never ask you to do them for me,” Lauren said and passed
Alex woke up and checked the time. With the help of his personal maid, he showered and dressed up. He went to the dining and ate breakfast before he was taken to the car and the driver drove to the company. He was helped down, and Dan was already waiting for him.“Any lead?” Alex asked the moment he set his eyes on Dan.“No sir” Dan said, and Alex frowned. He wondered why it was taking so long for the McCarthy's family to respond to him. Even if it was a rejection, at least they should have sent something. Alex was wheeled to the meeting room where some investors were already waiting for him. Dan made sure to quickly brief him about the meeting before they got there. The door opened, and Alex frowned when he saw his cousin speaking with the investors who seemed to be enjoying his company. The opening of the door distracted them and they looked at who had entered. Jake grinned and stood up, then walked toward Alex. “Look who is here, you are late, they have been waiting for like
Lauren stood in the courtroom as she signed the marriage certificate, her palms perspiring. As she looked at Alex, who was sitting in his wheelchair, cool and collected, her heart was pounding. Behind her, there was a whisper, "I'm amazed that you're doing this." She kept her eyes on the page in front of her and didn't turn around. Alex's helper, Dan, came over to them holding a pile of papers. "Mr. Magnus, everything is in order," he said. "Mrs. Magnus, welcome to the family," he continued, turning to Lauren. Lauren forced herself to swallow and forced a small grin. "I'm grateful," she whispered. That was the first time that day that Alex looked at her. He had unfathomable blue eyes. "You're done here. Alex wheeled himself into his mansion's living room, his face as harsh and icy as ever. His uncle, Mr. Magnus, and his cousin, Jake, were sitting pleasantly on the plush couches when he suddenly halted. Their tones were light and sarcastic as they laughed over a drink.Alex said in a cold tone, "What are you doing here?" Mr. Magnus grinned. "Alex, what sort of greeting is that? We are related. Is there a reason we shouldn't come?"Swirling the whiskey in his glass, Jake laughed. "Alex, calm down. All we're doing is catching up. How is married life going for you?" He spoke in a sarcastic tone. Alex tensed his jaw, but he didn't fall for their trick. He said plainly, "Go if you're here to waste my time." Mr. Magnus's face became serious as he leaned forward. "Now, nephew, now. We're just worried. Getting married to a random girl? A nobody? It's not exactly the best course of action." Alex shot out, "You have no business knowing what I decide." And my wife is Lauren. Be respectful. J
As the driver opened the car door for her, Lauren's heart was racing as she arrived at the Magnus mansion. With its imposing construction, the house loomed huge. Clutching her purse closely, she stepped outside while trying not to display her nervousness.Dan was standing at the door, his businesslike manner unwavering. "Mrs. Magnus," he nodded courteously. Mr. Magnus is anticipating your arrival. Follow me, please. Lauren whispered, "Thank you," looking around as she followed Dan inside. With its lofty ceilings, glistening chandeliers, and marble flooring that glistened in the gentle lighting, the interior was every bit as imposing as the façade. It was unlike anything she had ever seen. Dan guided her to Alex's study and opened the door after a brief knock. "She's here, Mr. Magnus," he declared. Alex's face was unreadable when he looked up from his desk. "Enter," he said. With trembling hands, Lauren entered the house. She said, "You wanted to see me?" Alex motioned to the chair
