This is on her bucket list. She just wants to visit a cemetery, name-miss na kasi niya ang kaniyang mga magulang. But her parents were buried in Sagada, faraway from Manila.
If only she had enough time to travel back and forth to Sagada from Manila, she would gladly do it in a beat.
Three years ago lang nang mamatay ang Mommy ni Josh dahil sa breast cancer, she became very sensitive about the topics she’s saying about Tita Natalie because she knows that Josh is not yet healed.
But instead of silencing himself, Meteor heard a small chuckle. “Sira, naka-move on na ako. Don’t worry.” He just said it to make her feel better.
Para siyang kinu-kuryente ng paulit ulit sa tuwing nangyayari iyon, but those moments were the most beautiful for Meteor. Being with him never felt so obnoxious, it was as if Meteor feels home in him.
“Meteor, you know that I’ve been in love with you since we were college. Of course I’ll cry,” napalunok si Meteor sa sagot ng lalaki at bahagyang kinagat ang labi niya para pigilan ang pagngiti. Josh never failed to make her heartbeat pound so fast and hard. Pero bahagya siyang nalungkot habang iniisip na iiyak ang lalaking mahal niya, she pictured him crying last night and she cried her heart out.
She had been thinking about how would Josh feel when she dies.
“Meteor.” From looking at her fingers on her lap, she glanced at Josh. She saw him biting his own lower lip mildly. His face was serious and he was looking at the road, his eyebrows creasing. He looked furious and… wretched at the same time. “Can I ask you something?” he glanced at her for a second and returned his gaze on the road.
She hummed as her response, “Can you act like… you are not ill?” parang ang hirap pang sabihin ni Josh iyon. Meteor then felt something in her heart that wants her to tear up. Gusto niya kasing masanay si Josh sa pagkawala niya, they both don’t know when she’ll die. She never had any surgeries neither any therapy.
“W-why?” she stuttered. She shouldn’t have asked that, she knows that Josh would just feel pain if she pushed the topic through. But she still wants to know why. At that very moment, Meteor felt selfish for letting him secretly feel in agony.
“J-just because…” Josh did not say anything after that and focused himself on driving, or he really is focused? He looked stressed and uncomfortable.
Meteor just remained herself quiet the whole ride. No one dared to talk. She didn’t even dare to touch the radio nor to open the window for some fresh air. She felt suffocated for the first time with Josh, dahil din siguro awkward ang atmosphere at hindi siya sanay sa naging topic nila kanina.
She watched the tall buildings and skyscrapers light in the middle of the night at Metro Manila. She had never seen Manila like this before. She always pictured it with dirty and noisy street, polluted, and crowded. Manila was the opposite of Sagada, she remembered the first time she stepped in the city… she felt like she was being watched from everywhere she goes.
As the city lights vanish and was replaced by tall and dark trees, she still watched them. Along with the starry and cold breeze, it was a perfect picnic in the midst of dead hearts buried 6 feet underground. It stimulates the sh*t out of her.
The gate was covered with dead algae and old rust. It was as if they were in a horror movie. Everything was dark and scary, the vibe of the old cemetery was terrifying, and Meteor thinks it was perfect. Above those dead names and souls was a living universe. Meteor loves the ironic scenery in front of her.
They both stood up in front of the tall gate, sabay silang napatingin sa isa’t isa. They both know that they were scared of ghosts. That’s one of the reasons also why Meteor chose a cemetery. She wants to get rid of any things they both afraid of. Iyon ang dahilan ng bucket list niya, she wants to explore.
The only sounds inside was the loud crickets and crows, and it did not keeps their sanity. Each step they take was petrifying and insane.
His Mom’s grave was the only grave inside the cemetery who had a living and vibrant grass.
Josh set the blanket and lit his Mom’s favorite scented candle as Meteor placed Tita Natalie’s favorite daisies. They both sat on the red, black, and white checkered blanket. Meteor felt dejected seeing Josh like this, so she caressed Joshua’s back to comfort him.
“Hi, Mom. Sorry if ngayon lang kami nakadalaw ni Meteor.” Meteor flashed a small smile and placed her arms on his shoulders. The expensive perfume mixed with his body scent filled Meteor’s nostrils along with the natural smell of old trees and lifeless grass.
“I’m with Meteor, Mom. I think she misses you so much that she went here at midnight.” Pareho kaming mahinang natawa sa sinabi niya. Meteor’s heavy heart somehow lightened when Josh starts to smile and tell his Mom stories, but none of them were about her cancer.
“Oh, my gosh!
When Meteor smelled the familiar scent of Joshua, she calmed down.
“Sino ‘yon? Nabulabog ba natin ‘yung mga—“
“Tao ‘yun.
“Shh.” Meteor pursed her lips to shut up, sa sobrang kaba ay halos hindi na siya huminga. “Hoy!
“Josh, bilisan mo!” hawak kamay silang tumakbo, Meteor can’t feel her legs sa sobrang tulin ng takbo nilang dalawa.
Natawa silang pareho habang hinihingal.
Pero kahit nanginginig at hinihingal sa pagod ay hindi naiwasan ni Meteor na tumawa ng malakas, this was the most funny and ridiculous thing she had ever made with Josh.
To live and not forget.
SIXNUMBER FOUR: explore the mall.“MASARAP din pala dito, ‘no?” Meteor looked at every corner of the five star restaurant na kinakainan nilang dalawa ni Josh. It’s Meteor’s first time to eat there and she admits that she was impressed. I’ve been here before. You should try their matcha ice cream.” Pagsang-ayon ni Josh kay Meteor. It’s true that this restaurant was beyond a person’s expectation, everything here was perfect. May pianist rin na nagtutugtog sa loob, and Meteor finds it relaxing and therapeutic.
SEVENNUMBER FIVE: Buy things I’ve never bought before. It could be bags, clothes, expensive make-ups, etcPS: WITH MY OWN MONEY!“Ha?! Ginamit ko muna ‘yung ipon ko since last year para makabyahe. Ate, kunin mo na kami ni bunso.” Meteor’s heart broke when she heard her siblings’ cry. She bit her lower lip and walked back and forth, thinking of how she can go there faster.Four to six hours pa a
EIGHTWARNING: NOT SUITABLE FOR YOUNG READERS *WINKMETEOR’S fingers ran through her hair, fixing the loose curls she did an hour ago. Her parents would surely go ballistic when they see her right now. Wearing a bodycon black dress that complimented her fair skin, Meteor disagreed by what she saw on the mirror even if it screamed perfection. Is it the color? The style? Or this dress wasn’t just her cup of tea? The dress she was wearing was probably the most scandalous cloth in her wardrobe… and she’s wearing it now!The three inches-above-the-knee dress looked so short for her, the deep v-neck that showed her not so big boobs distracted her, and the halter strap made it all worse for Meteor. Sho
NINE“DISMISS.” Azren stood up from his swivel chair without throwing a glance at the people inside the room. He walked on the hallway to his office while both of his hands on his pocket.“Sir, your last meeting is…” Alex, his secretary stopped talking and looked at his schedule, still following his big steps. “With your parents, The Sicilian, at exactly an hour and 2 minutes from now.” Azren sighed and entered his wide office.
TENMETEOR woke up by the unfamiliar smell of the room and she found herself in nude with a man beside her, his back welcomed her sight. Her mouth gaped. Sh*t. Sh*t. Sh*t. She did it! She lost her virginity! She felt like she was hit by a truck, no, an airplane or a cruise rather. Gosh, it was as if a group of gangsters trampled her up to death.
Meteor just wore a green above-the-knee sage green dress with short puff peasant sleeve paired with pastel green sandals. Obviously she loves pink. Everything in her house is pink.Back in high school, she usually wears kikay outfits that sometimes don’t match, but she loves the way she is when she was young. She misses the days where she doesn’t need to think about the responsibilities. She misses those days where she comes home with her friends and ate street foods and she’d still be welcomed with a big and warm hug by her parents. S
TWELVE METEOR WENT OUT of her room stroking her stomach. She just woke up and her stomach kept on crumbling. The new set of pink curtains covered the only window in her condo that made the whole place a bit dim. Meteor didn’t know what time it was when she got out from her room. Meteor thought of different varieties of food and cheeseburgers with chocolate milkshake would definitely fill her stomach and satisfaction. Meteor was licking her lips while gulping. Just a
THIRTEEN“RIU!” Meteor almost lost her voice by how she shouted. It’s the time of the month and her cramps are killing the sh*t out of her. Riu opened the bathroom door holding her phone, she’s on her pajamas, and her hair tied up in a messy bun. Ngumingiwi si Meteor at bahagyang nakayuko. Patuloy ang paghinga niya ng malalim, trying to calm herself down.“Bilhan mo ako ng napkin. Dali.” Meteor whispered in pain. Sure she had cramps before, but not like this one.
TWENTY-SEVENMETEOR WAS NOT THE one who suffered from lying down in the hospital bed for weeks, yet she feels so weak and exhausted. Probably because of sleepless and unfinished naps, the feeling of distress sleeping in an unfamiliar sofa was like a fish out of the sea.“Manang, kumusta ka ngay? Meteor just nodded, she peeled a dry skin from her lips with her teeth.I think I’ll be needing a new lip balm. Ganito talaga si Meteor sa tuwing stress o puyat, she tried different lip balms yet nothing really lasted. Kahit pa yata araw-araw siyang mag-lip balm, kapag stress siya, the efforts won’t last.Meteor sighed as she carried their bags up to her condo. She’ll remind herself later to thank Josh for all the help, halos gabi-gabing nasa ospital si Josh. Hindi nga a
TWENTY-SIXGUSTONG MAIYAK ni Meteor sa mga narinig. She had never heard Riu talk like that. Nuong una’y gusto niyang bumangon atsigawan si Riu sa pagiging mataraypero bigla namang umatras iyon. Her sister really cared for her. Her senseswoke up when Azren carried her to the bed. Instagram? Twitter? Any socmed accounts?” narinig nanaman niyang tanong ni Riu.
TWENTY-FIVE“MOM?” AZREN stretched his arms when his Mother called. He’s been working for a couple of hours, haven’t even ate his lunch. He can skip meals when he’s working. He clutched his stomach when it grumbled. Damn, what time is it? He unconsciously looked at the small clock on his wooden table. He needs to shop new stuff for his office and penthouse. Everything that he sees reminds him of his ex. Wala siyang magagawa. He was too dawned on her before… until now, he guessed. Alex just hits different.“Azren?” he blinked several times to gain his senses back.
TWENTY-FOUR METEOR TUCKED THE strands of hair behind her ears while feeling heavy inside. She was trying to ease the guilt and hesitation to call ‘him’. It just felt wrong. So wrong. Meteor sighed as if her problems would vanish with breathing out, but no. It’s been months! And she has the audacity to call him again after being MIA? She clenched her phone and shut her eyes close. “Bahala na si Batman.” She dialed his number and every ring she hears makes her heartbeat reckless. Nakailang lunok na si Meteor, nakailang buntonghinininga, nakailang kamot sa batok; trying to find the courage. She just wants someone to talk to. “Hello?” his morning voice filled Meteor’s eardrums. She felt a tingling feeling on her stomach when she heard his voice again. She missed him so much. She missed Josh so much. Meteor felt like crying. She didn’t know what she was crying for. Is it because of her crashing ego? Or because she badly
TWENTY-THREEMETEOR WOKE UP from the small humming sound inside Azren’s car. It was not noisy nor annoying, a solemn lullaby rather. They’re still on the road, but right now, they were surrounded by buildings. Probably Manila’s heavy traffic again. It has always been like this, always traffic, always hectic. Meteor loved Metro Manila because of its messy narration. Manila speaks its story itself. Hindi na nito kailangan pa ng magkukuwento. But despite of its spitting story, it remains mysterious to Meteor’s eyes. This is why Meteor admired this city more than her own hometown. Because it was obvious but mysterious at the same time. The only thing she hated about Manila was traffic. T
TWENTY-TWO FROM LOOKING at his laptop, Azren’s gazes went to Meteor’s. She walked slowly to him, hesitating to talk to Azren. Is she going out? Azren leaned on the sofa and crossed his arms. Meteor doesn’t seem to notice that Azren was watching her hesitate. This woman is actually not bad. She’s easy to be with, she understands everything he says, he also admits that she is cute, damn. Where did that word come from? She’s a good actress, too... After what happened at the garden, Azren didn’t know what to say that time. Her acting is great! He must reward this woman for her great acting.
TWENTY-ONERATHER THAN being forced into a marriage she never wanted, Meteor felt like she was the opposite of one lucky woman. She’s just a few inches from her. She feels dizzy and nauseous dahil sa matapang nitong feminine perfume. She looked so professional with her pastel pink pencil-skirt and white polo folded up enough to show her slim forearm. Her legs were not crossed instead, her ankles were tucked on the other making it slightly slant. This is his aunt’s standard and his mom’s, too.
TWENTY “YOU KNOW, I’m really surprise that Azren brought a girl home after several months. But after they broke up, he barely go home here.” Meteor awkwardly smiled at his mother. They just got out from the house and just roaming around the castle-like mansion for five minutes. She had never encountered situations like this before. Tita Natalie is a mother to her and she feels comfortable near Josh’s Mom. She feels suffocated and uncomfortable. But she remained calm and convinced herself that she’ll get through this
NINETEENLOVE MAKES SACRIFICES, this is why Meteor needs to endure this man’s presence. She can feel the strong connection between her and her child, a connection different from her siblings’. It was as if her child suddenly gave her hope and strength that she only felt for her family.Watching the old trees swaying gracefully with the wind, Meteor stroked her stomach gently. Her lips curved feeling the small bump there. She got pregnant so early, but whatever happens… she’ll face the consequences. Tanggap na niya ang baby niya, there’s no turning back. They’re heading to his parents’ house, since it was an agreement. She was l
