Nortia's POV
I flipped my eyes open, staring blankly at the ceiling as I tried to get a recollection of where exactly I was. Squeezing my eyes shut, I let out a grunt when everything rushed back in, Maxwell, Samantha, and the bar. I had gotten drunk when I wasn't supposed to. I exhaled deeply, pushing myself up when a shrilling sound echoed through, punching all of my thoughts into bubbles. Stretching a hand for my phone, a frown cascaded my face when I saw who it was. The thought of Samantha rushed back in. It was my uncle, her father. After my parents had gotten into an accident, they had taken me in, as that was the only way they could get the company my parents left behind, something about a term attached to the will that had been left behind. So while they treated me like a pearl to the public, I was mainly an extra mouth to be fed which barely even saw enough food to eat, and was made to sleep in the basement while they were even better rooms than I could count. Funny how the housekeeper and the extra hands had better living conditions than I even did when my father owned the house. I took in air until I was sure that I was fine, my grip tightened around the phone. Unlike Samantha and her mother, her father was a bit different from them, he was the least cruel one of them, that treated me as a human, or rather saw me as one. “ Nortia, where are you? You didn't come home last night” his tone was coated with worry. I rolled my eyes before settling my phone to my ear. I knew that he had an inkling what was going on in his house. He could tell, but he rarely stopped them anyway, maybe he enjoyed it as well. “ Is there a problem?” I asked. “ Let's eat together, it's been so long, and I have missed that” My heart warmed at his words. “ Where are you? I will have my driver pick you up in a moment” “Is it urgent? I am at the apartment.” I racked my brain as I thought of something to put on, if indeed it was. “ Yes, you don't have to bother, you can come as you are, to the family's hotel, my driver will be there in a second” the call went off in a sec. “My father's hotel,” I uttered. it wasn't the family, it was my father’s. I rushed into the bathroom for a shower, when I was done, I decided to go with a casual gown, it was between family and it shouldn't be too much. The door went off with a ding, slipping the bag against my shoulders, my feet struttered off to the door as I pulled it open. “ Let's go” I flashed a smile as I got in the car after he did. ***************** My brows furrowed when the car came to a halt in front of the hotel, it was the hotel alright, but this didn't look like a family dinner, It looked rather like a party, what was it about? I flipped my gaze around, trying to make the most of it when a camera flashed its light behind me. “ Here they come, the couple” I gazed to my side, a bit stunned that it might be me when I turned my gaze around and my heart plopped as my eyes watered. “ You are here” Samantha uttered, stridding in with Maxwell. Samantha was dressed in a peach gown, a pearl necklace that cost more than my salary in a year would adorn her neck while she had her hand hooked around Maxwell’s, her clothes a sharp contrast to mine. My nails dug into my palm at the thought that I had been fooled by my uncle. My teeth dug into my lips as I glanced at what I had on, an outfit not befitting whatever the occasion was. Samantha leaned closer, hands wrapped around my neck as she yanked me closer. “ You are dressed just right, the perfect way that you should” she sniffled in a chuckle before she added. “ To our engagement party” my eyes rimmed with tears at her words. I glanced at Maxwell behind her, my heart stuffed as I did. I knew that he had betrayed me, sleeping with my cousin had been one, but getting engaged to her was the height of it. I pried her hands off, intending to walk off when she held me back, as she rasped out. “ Can you come and take pictures? I barely see my cousin and I would like to have one with her, on my engagement day” she bellowed, pouting as she pleaded. I had taken a step forward, intending to storm off when she held my wrist. “ I wouldn't do so if I were you, father had finally promised to let you get that promotion that you wanted, but that is if you act the way that you should when you are here” I blinked back the tears that threatened to slip down as I stared at her, flashing the cutest false smile that I could mustered up, while trying to force down the lump and look beyond the gnawing as pain tore through me, I listened for the click, while trying to fight the looks I was given. ‘How could she dress this way to her cousin’s engagement party? ‘One can tell how thoughtless she is, I would never want anyone like her in mine,’ ‘She look like she does this often, how exactly does Samantha have a cousin like her? When she is so nice?’ “Oh you people shouldn't say that,’ Samantha beamed as she pulled me closer to her. “ She isn't always like this, and beside I don't mind,” I scoffed, peeled her hands off while everyone talked about how flawless she was and how perfect she looked with Maxwell. I flicked off the tears that slipped down my cheek. That was supposed to be me, and Maxwell, if he had cared enough for my feelings. My eyes roamed across the hotel hall which was decorated to the tilt, when a voice blurted my name. “ Nortia, She is here, I told you guys she is just running late and she will be here soon” my aunty strolled along. I roamed my gaze at her when she halted before clasping a hand over her mouth. “ Nortia dear, are you okay?” My eyes dimmed in on her as I waited for her to speak when I noticed the snickers and jeers behind her, mocking me. “ Oh please, you guys should stop. Her presence here is all I need, and nothing else” my aunty held me to herself, patting my face gentle as she said. “But her outfit seems so odd, why would she dress this way?” My aunty held my hands in a reassuring way as she explained. “ Nortia isn't that way, she is nice. I am sure she had rushed over, she was elated to see her cousin get engaged and had to be here, you know how it can be” I pried off her hands off, intending to storm off when she held me back. “ Why don't you go home and get some rest?” She patted my hands. I tried to push out the words that filled the room commending her for being so nice to me when I was so ungrateful. Maxwell stood at the far end of the room teasing Samantha who had shared a kiss with him, and when his eyes met with mine, he scoffed before kissing Samantha's hands. “Come with me” she yanked me with her, pushing me against the door to an empty room.Nortia's POV “ You don't know how happy I am to see you here, Nortia” she uttered when we were alone, while flashing a smile at me. I rolled my eyes at her, at how effortlessly she was acting, and how pretentious she was. “ Get off this, aunty, we are all alone so there is no need for this pretense anymore” I tried to push past her when she said. “You know Samantha is engaged now, so it is only right that you do the same and I think I should make a choice since I have been like a mother to you all these while” A mother? Was she even being right? When exactly did she ever act like one? To me at that? “ Go on a blind date” “ What?” “Go on a blind date, I have the perfect person for you, you are single so it will work out…” “ I wouldn't be single if your daughter didn't take my bf away from me” I answered her when her brows crested at me. “ Your bf? You had a man? Who Maxwell?” She burst out into a peal of laughter,a hand against her chest as she did. I listened as the door cr
Nortia's POV My nails dug into my palm when he beamed at me. “You always have the habit of running off whenever I want to talk to you, are you going to do so again?” I gulped in my spittle at his words, why exactly was he making it look like we had done anything serious? “ Who is he? Were you cheating on me?!” Maxwell demanded as he glanced at me. “ You can't do this to me, you can't cheat on me, you have to stay by my side, no matter what” I let out a sigh, does he know how stupid he sounded?“How does it feel to be beaten at your game?” He took a step forward, attempting to stroll over when he was held back. “You wouldn't do such” “ Oh, you don't know me as you thought you do, I bet you are not the only one who knows how to, I wish you a happy life with Samantha, one that has you both in tears always” The stranger cackled, his eyes held admiration as he stared at me when I rushed off. “ You can't cheat on me,” Maxwell rushed after me. “ You can't leave me either, no on
Nortia's POV I swallowed as I peered at the mirror, my reflection glancing back at me. I leaned against the wall, contemplating if I had to do this. Tears snaked down my cheek because I knew there was no way I wouldn't, I had to do it, for my parents. I had to make sure that this goes away. I gave myself a gentle tap on the face as I whispered to myself. “Get yourself right, you have to do this” I cajoled myself, whispering words as I said that. I let out a puff, my eyes glancing around at my closet as I tried to make out the most from it. I settled for a red gown that hung above my knees, a black heels and a black purse to match, since I had decided to do it. There was nothing wrong with dressing this way, right?I didn't want to give off more than I could take in. My hands circled the lip butter I had in-between my fingertips while I contemplated on if I was going to put it on, on second thought, I slipped it back into my purse, took a long stare at myself before striding o
Nortia's POV Tears slipped down my cheek as I tried to wriggle his hands away from my body, I nudged them always, gnashing when he seemed persistent. “ You don't have to do anything, all you have to do is lie down and let me do the work” he said to me, eyes twinkling as he did. I fumbled, when I finally got his hands off before forcing myself up as I stumbled backwards, his hands grasped my shoulders forcing me up to take a glance at him when I bit hard into his shoulders. A cry of pain tore through his lips, before his palm struck across my face, pain fizzled through me. “ How dare you!” He raged.“ Do you know what you have done? Do you know who I am?” His nerves bulged as he questioned. He drew me closer, tiny dots filled my vision while I tried to stay awake, when he held my chin, staring into my eyes, my eyes brimmed with tears. “ You will do as I say, you will act like the brat your aunt said you have always been and let me…” his words trailed off when my legs kicked his
Alexis’s POV The gentle thud of the door as it slammed against it hinges startled me up, my hands strayed to the far end of the bed, the cold I felt forced me up while I searched for her. She was nowhere to be found, had I been dumped? I had a hand on my knees as I wondered, all of these were a first for me. I have always had girls throwing themselves at me, countless ones coming closer, numerous ones wanting me to bed me, but none of them had left before I was awake. A small cackle left my lips as I chewed on my lips when my eyes caught it, that red spot that glared at me. “ Dammit” I pounded into my fist, my eyes dimming in to be certain I was seeing right. “ Asshole” I cursed myself. I should have known she was a virgin, she felt tight, and she felt so different, everything about her felt different from what I have known. From the very first moment when she had slammed that dollar bill on my shirt, I had been intrigued. Someone had done the same, but she had offered to warm
Nortia's POVMy feet raced down the pavement while I tried to beat the traffic jam that lead to the hospital. My heart sledged as I sprinted down while cursing repeatedly on my way there. I tried to search around for what might have caused the gridlock and when I saw nothing, I kept mute. I finally let out a sigh when I got to the hospital, it's vibrant and bold front glaring at me. My hands smoothened my chest as I endeavored to stay calm, it wouldn't help if I lost my mind, so I had to be relaxed. I took the lift that lead to the doctor's office, flinging it open to see him relaxed on his chair. “You came” his hands laced each other as he acknowledged. “And fast as well” I swallowed, gulping in. “Please don't…” I began. I was ready to do whatever it took just to make sure that nothing happens to my parents, for the treatment to continue. “Miss Nortia, you know how the hospital works, we aren't charity, and neither are your parent's charity cases, so it's only right that we
Nortia's POV I was seated before I found myself having regrets on why exactly I had let him pull me with him. I mean, I should have rebuffed him and stood my ground, why exactly should I be with him? I should be out there trying to get the money needed for my parents. “Take a chill” I jolted when his palm tapped on my lap, before flicking my eyes at him. Peeling his hands off, I asked. “ What do you think you are doing?” My words trailed off when he came to a screeching stop in front of a restaurant, one that I wouldn't be able to step in for years to come because I knew it requires reservations, and I was dead broke to even get one. My heart churned at whom he might be before I composed myself. My throat parched, and I was lost in my stream of thoughts when he got down, strolled around and pulled the door for me to get down. My orbs met his, piercing blue like those of a Siberian husky. “ Come” he held out a palm at me, waiting for me to take it which I did. “ What are we
Nortia's POV I erupted into laughter, a hand to my stomach at what he had just said, that had to be a joke, a massive one because I couldn't imagine anyone saying that. Was he one to casually make jokes just like this one? I pondered. I waited for him to join me, but he didn't, instead his eyes were waiting, and he kept gazing at me like something wasn't right. “ You are serious?” I asked, when I noticed how he didn't say a word anymore. “ You want me to be your contracted wife?” He nodded. “ But you barely know me” it just didn't make any sense. “ A night with you is what I needed to know all of that,” he explained. I heaved, taking in a deep breath before plopping to the chair. “ Spill” “ Nortia” “ Why would you want me to be your contracted wife? I mean, there are a lot of girls out there, and you hardly know me, and besides it was just sex, and sex could happen to anyone” He dragged in a breath before he said. “I have to get married, I don't have anyone nor a gf” “ Ok
Nortia's POVWatching the clips all over again was heart wrenching, I had thought I would be able to do so but doing so now, I knew it was almost impossible. It was all documented there, the time where Alexis had clung onto a pole, almost dropping before Gerald walked in, the CCTV footage had captured every single detail and with each clench to the pole, my heart dropped with it as well. I wondered what exactly would have made Maxwell gone to such length because I didn't want to believe I was the reason for such an action. “ Are you okay?” My mother questioned, draping a hand on my shoulders. With a smile lining my face, I turned to look at her, letting myself immerse in her love. “ I know it feels awkward having us around, you must have gotten used to doing life all alone but I am here to let you know that we can always work things out, we have missed a lot of time and your father is ready to make it up with I as well,”“I don't hold anything against you” I answered, making sure
Alexis's POV “ Took them just long enough to get here,” my father added, before waving the doctor off. “ Thank you doc, I will get my assistant to send across your money, with your tips of course, thank you” Showing gratitude for even the smallest of things was sometimes my father had taught me and had inculcated in me, no matter who it was he was addressing or talking to, he would always show gratitude. He had said it once that everyone was the same and just because we were privileged enough to get this didn't mean we were supposed to treat people like they don't matter and it hoped to do the same when I had kids. Kids with Nortia didn't sound like a bad idea even though that was what I had wanted from her initially, now I found myself wanting even more than just that.“ Let them in, how's the shares now?” “ Stabilizing,” I answered. “ Nothing works better than public opinion, once the public is by your side, you have gotten all that you wanted and that is what we are going t
Alexis's POV I waited, glancing at the clock, each tick resonating through the air as I waited for what was going to be their response. My father had the phone leaning against his ears, while I tried not to think about how infuriated my mother was going to be when she get to know what exactly had happened. He turned to me, looking hard at me before he uttered. “ He's fine, he is okay, there's no need to send the doctor over, he doesn't need it”“ I know that you will insist but he really doesn't need it” my father said again and it wasn't hard to tell that my mother was making sure I wasn't hurt in the slightest way.A smile hung on my face, I wasn't used to this, but I knew she cared, she had always cared and maybe, I wasn't too grown for her not to still be that way. Placing the phone back down on the table he turned to look at me. “ Your mother is worried and she insisted on sending the doctor anyways, I didn't have a say in this” he explained to which I bobbed alongside. “ I
Alexis's POV“ I have to work, Nortia” I insisted, keeping my lips tight while I evaded her questions. “ Alex, I want to know what happened that had you that way,” she insisted. I was at a loss while I tried to come up with something that she would believe in, but I let out a sigh instead, her eyes inquiring as I did so. “ Well?” She waited for me to say something before I finally did. “I went up there with Maxwell, and things happened, a scuffle actually and he shoved me off” Her eyes flew open into lightings at my words. “He shoved you off?” Her voice broke. “You don't have to worry about that, I am fine and nothing happened as well”“ That isn't it” she let out almost in tears. “Your company has been affected and I don't know what it's fate will be, how could he do something like that? How were you able to get out? Who helped you? What would I have done if anything happened to you? What would my parents say? What would have been everyone's reaction?” Grasping her to myself
Alexis's POV A gasp left my lips while I held onto the wretch iron still trying to make my way back up to the building when a hand stretched itself out at me. “Boss, it's Gerald” he screamed at me before holding a hand out to me. “ Gerald?” I questioned again, wanting to be sure that my ears weren't playing tricks on me because I couldn't recall if I had mentioned that he was to come here or had given him directives to come up here. “ Nortia, sorry your wife called me over panicking, she has left, but came back to find out you haven't left or placed a foot out and she said I should come back” My leg dropped down a bit before I held out a hand at him, letting him pull me up. When my back rested on the cold floor, I blinked repeatedly wondering what exactly the article would have been if I had missed a step more and ended up dropping to the group. What the news would have carried, would it have been the same news? I sat upright, a hand on my knees at what had just occurred, sweepi
Alexis's POV The air stilled with no one saying a word like I had thought they would, maybe they were spellbound and as such, couldn't say anything. “ You can't do that,” Nortia blurted out. “ It isn't even yours in the first place, do you really think that I will watch you take what belongs to me?” “Like you haven't in the first place, you signed off the company to me on your own accord and I never forced you to do such, so you shouldn't go about talking off, stand aside, while men are talking you aren't supposed to utter a word,”I edged closer, toward her uncle when her father's voice came out in a muffled tone. “I will take it” he exhaled out, stunning me. “What are you saying?”“The shares and the position, I will have it, Nortia will take it in my stead, but I want my shares”“ Father, you can't,” Nortia turned to him, her eyes brimmed with tears at what she had just heard. “ You can't just let this go, you can't let this slide” she explained to him when he held her hands, e
Alexis's POV My feet came to a halt just in time for what I just heard, my eyes swept across the hall before they fell on Nortia who was spellbound and couldn't say a word.I edged closer, bridging the gap between us as I went closer. “ Stop please” I held her father back. “You shouldn't do this, it was what he wanted, you doing this will make you fall into his trap” I explained. Anyone could see that and the smirk that laced his face told me that much also and so I knew that I had to get him to stop, him wanting that was so cruel of him and he wasn't going to stop unless he got what he wanted. I was left to ponder on what exactly he had in mind that he wanted to do or he had planned, killing someone was out of it, had he gotten to the point where he had dead his heart? That whatever was going to happen could happen but he wasn't going to lose the company.Doing so much for something that wasn't even yours from the onset was pissing to me but I knew humans and they were greedy, I
Nortia's POVThe relief I had felt when Alexis had brought it up, holding it in his hand in a grasp was startling, a chuckle left my lips in relief when he held it up to my face. Placing a hand against my chest, I watched his face as it contorted into a frown before he stepped out, holding a hand out at me. “ Is something wrong?” I gauged his expression which told me something seemed off or it was. “ I just got a message from my father and I am going to need you to hold you feet and take in air before I let you know what it is” “What!” My voice came out in a scream while I asked in a muffled tone. “ Is something wrong?” “Your uncle called an emergency meeting, and your father was voted out, I know it will come out startling but he needed you to know that your uncle had gotten your father out already, we can't do much with that” he chewed on his lips.I stood, staring blankly at him before I sauntered back, barely able to catch my breath because of what he had just said before le
Alexis's POV If it was true what we had just been told, I knew it would change everything, and it would be what we are looking for. “ Do you have it?” I pushed on as I asked, waiting for him to answer when he turned his head behind him before stretching out what looked like a discarded memory card at me. “Are you sure about what you just said? Will you be able to stand as a witness if it comes to it?” I asked, wanting to know that he had the balls to go along with his words and he wasn't just saying it because he wanted to. “ I can, everything you need is in there, it is going to be tedious and hard for you, but you will be acquired at the end of it all, you will win and that is going to be it”I gauged his explanation before letting Nortia accept it, holding onto it firmly. “ Thank you, we are grateful for this” Mr. Edward said, gratitude coating his voice as he did. I could sense the apprehension that laid in his tone and how hard he was trying so he wouldn't showcase how weak
