AURELIA
Please, moon goddess. Do not forsake me. Beads of sweat trickled down my forehead as my eyelids burned with the tears I fought desperately to keep.
The air was thick with anticipation as I stood at the centre of the arena. Torches lined the walls, and the entire Nightfall pack watched in silence.
Tonight was supposed to be my night—the night I proved to everyone, especially my father, that I was worthy. The night I would shift into my wolf for the first time and claim my rightful place as beta beside my brother, Cronos.
People from far and wide had been invited to watch me transform into a glorious wolf that’ll serve them and protect them as I had trained all my life to do. But as the priests chanted their incantations, calling upon the moon and stars to bless me with the gift of my wolf, a sickening feeling , something like fear, settled in the pit of my stomach.
I felt nothing.
I clenched my fists, digging my nails into my palms to steady myself, waiting for the shift to begin, but there was only silence in my mind. No pull, no surge of power.
Heavens, what could this mean?
“Aurelia.” The chief priest’s voice broke through the silence, his uncertainty was evident in his voice.
He didn’t understand. Neither did I.
My brother’s shift had been one for the books, everyone expected the same thing from mine. I was, after all, my father’s daughter. But there was nothing like that.
I opened my eyes, and when I met those of the chief priest, my heart sank.
I risked a glance toward my father, who stood watching me from his podium. Despite the darkness of the night, I could see the disappointment carefully etched on every line of his frown.
It didn’t take time for whispers to begin to fill the arena and soft murmurs to ripple through the crowd.
THERE’S NO WOLF?
SHE CANNOT SHIFT?
A burning shame rose in my chest, and I fought to keep the tears from falling. I had dreamed of this moment my entire life, trained tirelessly to be the beta my father needed, the beta my brother deserved. And now… now I had failed them.
Without another word, I turned and began my walk of shame out of the arena.
I barely made it out before the first tear slipped down my cheek. I didn’t stop walking until I found myself in the courtyard of the palace, my home.
I sank to my knees and pressing my hands against the cold brick of the fountain as I let my tears flow. There was no one here to see me break down. I could do so in peace.
“Aurelia.” My father’s voice was cold, devoid of any warmth or compassion. I looked up, meeting his gaze, but the disappointment in his eyes was unmistakable.
“Father, please…” My voice was barely a whisper, but he raised a hand, silencing me.
“You have disgraced us, disgraced me. A princess without a wolf is no princess at all. You cannot protect our pack if you are not one of us.”
One of us? I was his daughter for heaven’s sake!
“But I can still serve as beta,” I pleaded, my voice breaking.
“I’ve trained my whole life for this! I was strong without the wolf. I am smart without…”
He shook his head, and my heart shattered into even tinier bits. Not that I had thought that was possible.
“A beta without a wolf is an omega, Aurelia. You would be a liability, a weakness. Nightfall doesn’t have the space for weaknesses. You know our history, you know this.”
I felt the ground shift beneath me, the weight of his words sinking in. An omega. The lowest rank, the one who serves, who obeys without question. I had spent my entire life striving to be worthy, to prove myself, and now he wanted to cast me aside, as if all my efforts meant nothing.
“I… I don’t understand,” I whispered, my voice trembling. “There has to be another way.”
“There is no other way.” The air of finality in his tone caused me to swallow hard. Anyone who knew Vaelor Nightfall, my father, knew better than to question his choices.
“I spoke with some of my lords back at your disgraceful ceremony. You’ll be married.”
My eyes widened.
“What?! Father…”
His frown grew deeper.
“You will become the lady of a noble house. Since your strength has failed you, your purity would have to account for something.”
By purity, he meant the fact that I was still a virgin. As princess of Nightfall, I owed it to the pack to keep myself for my mate. It was a thing of honour as the young ones looked up to me as a symbol of pride and prestige. All of that was gone.
“No,” I insisted.
“You can’t do this. I am your daughter, the princess of the Nightfall pack. I was meant to be beta.”
“You are nothing!” he yelled.
“Without your wolf, you have no place here.”
I looked away, feeling the tears spill over as I choked back a sob.
“Please, Father. Give me a chance. Let me prove myself.”
“There is nothing left to prove,” he said, dismissing me with a wave of his hand. “You will marry. That is final.”
Desperation clawed at me, and I turned to the one person who might understand, who might have a chance of changing his mind. My brother had stood beside my father all this while, but was yet to say a word.
“Cronos,” I pleaded.
“Please, talk to him. Make him see reason.”
Cronos’s gaze met mine, and for a moment, I thought I saw a flicker of sympathy. But it was gone as quickly as it appeared, as though it was never there.
My half brother and I had never been the closest of siblings, but he taught me and protected me when the need arose. Unlike my father, he never held it against me that I was the symbol of a love affair.
“I’m sorry, Aurelia,” he replied. Cronos never avoided anyone’s gaze. But tonight, he couldn’t look me in the eyes.
“ Father is right. Without your wolf, you cannot be beta. This marriage is the best option for you. We would make the necessary arrangements, and you would be wed the day after tomorrow. We need to let something else be the talk of the pack. Your failure to shift cannot trend any second more than it should.”
“Fine,” I whispered underneath my breath. There was no use fighting them with words.
“If that’s what you think is best, then I’ll go. But know this—I will not go quietly. I may be without a wolf, but I am still the princess of this pack. And I will not let you or anyone else take that from me.”
I returned to my room, and sank into my bed as I cried. I didn’t understand, couldn’t understand. My father was a wolf of valour, and my mother had been his trusted advisor whom he fell in love with. She had to be a strong wolf as well. So, what was wrong with me?
My door slowly creaked open, and I could tell from the soft air that filled the room that it was Diane, my best friend and hand maid, at the door.
She entered quietly.
“I heard what happened,” she said softly, coming to sit beside me. “I’m so sorry, Aurelia.”
I raised my head to meet her gaze, unable to hold back the tears that began to spill once more.
“He’s going to marry me off, Diane. Just because I couldn’t shift. He thinks I’m useless now, nothing more than a burden. He’s going to marry me off to some old lord with possibly three wives already. That’s the only way no one would expect anything of me.”
The more I recounted it, the more my heart shattered.
“If I… If I weren’t so—so pure, he might not see me as such a prize to hand off.”
Diane’s expression softened with sympathy, but then her eyes lit up, as if a thought had just come to her. “What if we change that?” she whispered.
I looked at her, eyes narrowed in confusion. “What are you talking about?”
She smiled.
“There’s a masquerade party in the pack tonight. A lot of people go—important people, and some who just want to let loose for the night. If you went there, no one would recognize you. You could… find someone. Someone handsome, maybe even someone you like. And you wouldn’t have to leave with this… expectation hanging over your head. That way, if you have sex for the first time, it won’t be with some old lord who you detest.”
My jaw dropped! It was a dangerous plan, but my body was the only thing I had control over. If I let someone take my virginity, my father would never allow himself to marry me off knowing the man would find out. At that point, I preferred to die as an unmarried princess than spend one night in the bedchamber of an old man my father’s age. Or worse, older.
“But… what if someone recognizes me?”
She shook her head. “No one will. Not with the right mask, the right clothes. Trust me, Aurelia. You deserve a chance to choose your own path, even if it’s just this one night.”
“Are you sure this is a good idea?” I asked, still hesitant.
Diane nodded as she pulled me into an even tighter hug.
“You’ve spent your whole life living by your father’s rules, the pack’s rules, your brother’s rules, preparing for a role you’re no longer allowed to have. For once, do something for yourself. No one has to know, except you.”
I took a deep breath, feeling the weight of the decision before me. It went against everything I’d been raised to believe, everything my father had drilled into me. But I was no longer his pawn. I was a woman with a choice, and if this was the only way to take back control of my life, maybe it was worth the risk.
“All right,” I said, my voice steady as I looked at Diane. “Let’s do it.”
A small smile spread across her face as she squeezed my hand. “You won’t regret this, Aurelia. I’ll help you get ready.”
An hour and a half later, I was walking into a crowded club with a feather mask on my face, a red dress, and black heeled boots that added almost a foot to my height.
The smell of booze and sweat wafted into my nostrils, causing me to sneeze. I had never been to anything like this. A princess was never to be found in places like this. From the first step I took into the crowd, it was very easy to tell I didn’t belong there. I just hoped no one would notice that I…
“Are you lost, baby girl?”
An oddly familiar baritone came from over my shoulder. Before I could turn, rough fingers clasped around my right shoulder, cold shivers ran down my spine, and my feet glued themselves to that very spot, unmoving and unyielding.
A slap resounds in the room, my head turning to the other side.“ How dare you,wh*re! How dare you seduce your sister's fiance?” My mother hisses, glaring at me.Leah stands next to her, casting a hateful glance at me.My tears roll down but I remain tight-lipped. Replying will only get me more beaten,I have learnt that the hard way." I always knew you were a loose woman but I never imagined that you would seduce your sister's man.”I want to shout and explain myself. Lucas was the one who offered to save my ass after Leah pushed me into the pool, turning me an object of ridicule before everyone." You can't stand seeing me happy, can yóu Alora? Always jealous of what I have when you can't have it." Leah comments and I swallow a lump of bitterness.I admit I am jealous of her but I never thought about snatching her fiance. The only thing I ever craved for was the love and affection my parents showered her but as the years passed, I gave up.In their eyes, I will never be as good as Leah
AURELIA He had disappeared into thin air, but I had gotten what I came for anyway. I snuck back into the palace with Diane’s help, and when I closed my eyes to sleep that night, I couldn’t stop seeing those emerald green eyes. I stormed into my father’s study the next morning. He was at his desk, as usual, pen in hand, signing some papers that probably dictated the life and death of someone else. He barely looked up when I barged in.“What is it now, Aurelia?” His tone was sharp, cold, devoid of the warmth a father should have for his daughter. I couldn’t blame him. I would never treat my own child the way he treated me, and that was probably the reason we were very different. “I’m not a virgin anymore,”I blurted out. There was no need to beat around the bush. I stood with my head held high, and my chin up straight. It couldn’t get any worse than it already was. His pen stopped mid-stroke. Then, slowly, he looked up at me, his eyes narrowing with a dangerous glint.“What did you
The door to my room is pushed open and Leah saunters in. Her gaze sweeps through the crumpled space and her nose lifts in disgust.I scan her appearance through the cracked vanity mirror. When she turns to look at me, she has a smile on her face, one that I wouldn't mistake as friendly.“ I came to see if you needed anything. After all, today is your special day." Leah says, her smile not dropping. I can hear the mockery and disdain well concealed in her words though but I ignore it.I am already used to it after all these years.“ Thanks for your concern but I don't need anything." I reply, straightening my unruly hair.Leah chuckles from behind me.“ Don't get me wrong, Alora. I am not concerned about you. I just want to make sure that you don't embarrass our family out there.”Her words don't faze me anymore. I know for a fact no one cares about me. Their reputation and family name is more important than I could ever be.“ Don't worry. I will behave myself and not stain the family na
Alonso POVI am brooding over a document my beta gave to me the previous day when I hear a timid knock on the door. The knock jolts me from my thoughts and I am not even aware when I let out an angry growl and knock over the glass cup of water on my table, and I watch as the glass hits the ground and shatters everywhere as if to equate my anger. The documents I was studying before the knock came are the documents of territory land ownership from the Young Moon pack. We have been having a lot of back on forth because of the ownership topic, so when the impromptu knock comes, my beast goes mad“Who dares to knock on my door!?” I spit, my voice filling with venom as I fumes“Good … good day …Alpha Alonso,” comes a stammering, scared, feminine voice from behind the door“What do you want!” I walk furiously to the door and fling it open. Standing behind the door is a timid servant girl dressed in the usual palace servant uniform. I instantly remember that she is the new maid I employed a f
Soon we are in the car for the long drive to the Midnight pack. When the car starts slowing down, I look out of the window and I can tell that we are almost at our destination. I start drumming on the seat anxiously and I catch Beta Leo staring at me. Although he is quiet I can tell that there are a lot of things you want to say. But thank the goddess he is not talking, the last thing I need is for anyone to talk around me. He still sits in silence even though he knows that we have gotten to our destination. Maybe he is silent because he is not ready to face me or he can sense my simmering discomfortI decide to stare out of the window instead. The pack house is beautiful. Decorated everywhere was different colours of light to add to the celebration. The car stops in front of the pack house and a service man rushes to usher me in with a bow. “Welcome how far Alonso of the Alistair Kingdom,” he says as he ushers me and Leo inI mutter a small, “Thank you,” as I take my steps behind him
Leah’s POV“Announcing the arrival of Alpha…”I roll my eyes immediately when I hear the title Alpha. A lot of dignitaries are here and they are either Alphas, Betas or their entourage. I am tired of see boring people parade in with false bravado as the announcer screams their names in the microphone“Alpha Alonso, the King of the Alistair Kingdom…”My eyes shoot open as I hear the Kingdom. King Alonso!? I have been waiting all night for his arrival. So why did the announcer address him as Alpha instead of King? This is one common mistake a lot of pack members make- addressing the Lycan King as Alpha. I hear even the Lycams make this same mistake often and this irritates me every timeOh well, that aside- the King is hereOh my goddess, my wolf is so excited. She is yelping so much. What if I get mated to the Lycan king. My father would be so proud of me. If our pack comes in alliance with the Alistair Kingdom, we would be the greatest pack ever and I would even get to be his queen.
Alonso’s POVMy patience is running dangerously thin. I have endured enough of this insufferable evening. The crowd is suffocating, the girls are suffocating, the smell of desperation is everywhere in the air. My beast is agitating already and if I don't take care it would start controlling me. I am frustrated. My eyes scan the ground hall frantically.I am practically searching for a new hiding spot. Anywhere dark, anywhere quiet, anywhere that is far away from the relentless voices and the wandering eyes of the hungry girls around here. I move swiftly but carefully in the crowd. I try to avoid any girl coming close to me. I can still feel the eyes of the other girl that I had shunned boring into me like she is going to kill me at any moment. Then suddenly, something- no, someone- collides into me with a thud like they are not looking at where they are going. I make a low growl, distinctively my fangs came out too. Then I look down to see a young woman almost crumbling at my feetHer
“King Alonso,” one of the two bulky looking guards is in my front with a stern face. I let out a low growl at their approach, and I match their energy with my own firm authority“We need to ask you a few questions,” he continues, his eyes darting between mine and the body of the girl in my hands“I'm in a hurry, so be quick,” I snarled“Fine, fine,” the first guard steps aside for the other to continue“Who is the girl, why is she unconscious and alone with you?” the second guard is speaking as he keeps looking at Alora’s weak body.I feel my beast snarl, but I control it almost immediately. “She was drugged at your Alpha's ball. I found her unconscious and I want to make sure that she is safe”The guards exchanged suspicious looks between each other before the gaze of the second landed on me in scrutiny. “How can you prove to me that she was drugged?”“Can't you see how she looks like? Can't you see that her breathing is raspy and she needs help?”“Did you drug her?” he dares to ask
Leah's POVAs I watch King Alonso’s car disappear father and father away from me it makes my blood boil. My blood even boils more when I think of the fact that Alora is in the same car with him and she is probably frolicking around with him. I induced her heat, she must probably be throwing herself at him and he must probably be touching her body by now. It could have been me!He chose her instead of me! How dare he!? How dare she!? How dare the both of them!? They both made me look like a fool. I'm standing here watching my chances of becoming the queen of the Alistair Kingdom slip away from my hands like fine sand because of that worthless omega wolf!“Get out of my sight!” his simple words had sounded in my ears. He dared to talk to me as if I am a common werewolf who is nobody in the pack. Even his Beta was trying to explain to him the nature of my status in the pack to him, but he didn't care. Instead he made a mocking remark about meThe memory of how he dismissed me feels lik
“Oh, I am still alive,” I yawn loudly as my eyes flutter open sleepily. I didn't even know when I slept off. After eating, I had been so full and tired that I decided to rest a little. Maybe it was then that I slept off. I feel a little bit victorious because I am alive, though my body aches from sleeping in an awkward position on the bare floorI stretch my hands, but my muscles protest in pain from my movements. My ankle still screams from where I sprained it earlier, but I noticed that the pain is now manageable when compared to beforeI am trying to stand up when a knock comes on my door. I am a little bit scared and apprehensive but not like the first time- perhaps because I have already subjected myself to whatever fate awaits me“Hello, Miss,” the familiar voice of the staff that came earlier filters in through the door. Her tone seems urgent- a type of urgency that wasn't there before. I move closer to the door to hear her properly“Miss, I came here to tell you that you have
I lay on the bed staring straight at the white ceiling. I am lost in confusion and I feel so much despair. Suddenly I feel my stomach growling- it is sharp and painful. I remember that I have not eaten since… I can't even remember now. I feel the ache in my stomach grow more and more, but I don't even have the energy to move. I feel so weak nowI shift uncomfortably on the bed, my hand is feeling around the bed to find my purse. But then I realise almost immediately- my purse- I don't think I have seen it since I woke up. My purse has my money in it and I think it is gone!My money is gone. I have saved it up for months in a hole I had dug in my room. It had not been easy since I rarely got any money of my own, but I started running small errands for the big girls in school - that is how I got money to save up. I have been stashing up every coin I could, planning my escape from the pack. All gone now, like it's air from cigar slipping out of my lipsI feel my body shutting down in dis
I am shocked when I discover that the man in front of me is King Alonso, but I don't show it. I don't want to act impress for some reasons, especially not when he just sees me as something he can use. Yes, that is what I call it. Why does he not want to tell me the real reason why a king would settle for an omega? His request is unsettling in my stomach. His offer is juicy. His Kingdom is greater than my father's territory, so it would be possible that he protects me. It is understandable on my own side why I would want to marry him, but why would he want to marry me? What would people say? What would he tell his people? What reason would he give them that he married an omega- the weakest of the pack?I stay motionless on the bed as I watch the overshadowing man on his back on me, picking up his phone. I am relieved a little when his attention is no longer on me, but still I am not comfortable. Is deep voice feels the air as he talks to the other person on the phone“What is it, Leo?
Beta Leo hesitates for a while, but when he sees that I am serious he steps out with a grumble, leaving me alone with the omegaI sit beside her on the bed, watching as she turns around on the bed. Then her eyes begin to flutter, her face starts to move slightly before her eyes open up softly. That is when I really get to see them. Her iris arebrown, warm but filled with confusion and struggle“You are awake,” I say with a soft voice and I am confused if I should sound that soft with her since we have no relationship with each otherShe jerks up suddenly as if she finally understood that she was not familiar with me or the environment she was in. She winces too, her hands flying to her abdomen“Careful,” I mutter, moving closer to her as her eyes darts around wildly - meeting mine and flicking around the room“Who are you? Where am I ? What do you want ? Please don't hurt me!” her words are rushed“What? No!” I am suddenly defensive. I never thought of what to do if she wakes up and
