Lux’s POV

The Dance Continued Inside

Alec’s knees nudged against mine as he crouched down, getting so close that I could feel the warmth coming off him. My breath caught as he lifted his legs to straddle mine, his hands sliding down to grip my thighs firmly. With each roll of his hips, he held me captive as he pushed toward me with fluid movements.

My skin burned everywhere he held me, and my arms prickled with goosebumps as my whole body trembled from his fiery touch. I clenched my fists, attempting to compose myself, but it was ineffective. I was completely at his mercy.

Just when I thought I couldn’t handle it anymore, that the tension between us was about to overwhelm me, Alec pulled back. My heart stopped for a moment, then started racing as he ran his hands up and down his chest, pausing at his waistband before boldly grabbing himself. The man was blessed, and I couldn’t look anymore. My face felt on fire, and I squeezed my eyes shut.

"Look at me," he said, his voice cutting t

  • Coming Out of the Deep    Chapter 1: Silverglade Academy

Lake A rush of excitement coursed through me as I stepped off the jet at Silverglate Airport. I couldn’t believe I was finally here, ready to start my varsity journey and embark on a new chapter of my life. Alec and I hurried to the curb, where our ride awaited us. As we got in the car, I could not help but feel both nervous and excited. This was the first time I was so far away from my family and the familiar comforts of home, but the excitement of all the new experiences that lay ahead quickly drew me out of it. As we began driving through the city, I realized it was even more beautiful than I had imagined, and there was a sense of freedom in the air. My cousin Alec was in his fourth and final year, and he told me that life was fast here. "Wow!" I marveled at how the city sparkled at night. It was one of its most striking features, and as someone from a small, quiet town, it captivated me. It also made me understand why Alec almost failed his first year. Silverglate was syno

Two days earlier Neridia Kingdom Prince Kairos "Are you ready?" Father asked, to which my brother and I enthusiastically responded, "Yes, sir!" This was the day we had been waiting for, and we were ecstatic. We were heading to Silverglade, where we would study for the next two years. We had grown up and spent our entire lives in the ocean, as future kings, constantly in the spotlight and under the scrutiny of our parents and the general public. We enjoyed our lives, but sometimes the pressure got to us. This was our opportunity to relieve some of the pressure, as we would not be known as princes where we were going. As part of our disguise, my brother and I had to wear contact lenses all the time to hide our golden eyes, which were a defining feature of us, and Father reminded us of this. Otherwise, we appeared human, albeit taller than the average human, which was not a problem. We also went by Kairos and Darian Neridia because we were required to have a last name. Merpeople

Kairos My brother and I entered the club and the music's throb struck us like a wave. It was harsh, electric, and unrelenting; it had nothing in common with the melodic songs of the currents or the soft murmur of the sea. Reds and blues danced across the walls and reflected off a huge, mirrored ceiling as lights flashed in frantic bursts. For a moment, I could not tell if we had entered a celebration or a battlefield because of the chaotic way the bodies moved together. I looked at Darian, and for once, he seemed as out of place as I did. His shoulders were stiff, his usual confidence drained by the sheer force of it all. We were laughing a minute ago, teasing each other about who could blend in the best. We believed we were prepared. But now, standing in this room packed with people, their energy crashing over us like a storm, I was not sure we were prepared. The air felt heavy—almost too thick to breathe—and I was sure that if I could smell scents, they would be mixed and d

Lake My eyes were wide as I stammered but before I could find my words, his lips crashed into mine, stealing the breath from my lungs. The sensation silenced everything—the pounding music, the crowd behind us, and the racing thoughts in my head. The wall hit my back with a cold jolt, but it did not matter. His warmth consumed me, his hands pressing against my sides with a desire that mirrored mine. My fingers instinctively gripped his shoulders, pulling him closer as if letting go would send me plummeting. The kiss deepened, each movement more urgent than the last as if we were making up for all the moments that hadn’t been ours. His lips were firm but soft, his touch desperate, and when his teeth brushed against my lower lip, a shiver ran through me, leaving me completely undone. I gasped for air when he finally pulled back, though it felt like I’d lost more than my breath. His forehead pressed against mine, and in the dim glow of the club lights spilling through the doorway,

Lake “Lake… hey, are you OK? Lux's concerned voice finally snapped me out of my trance. I blinked, still cold from the events unfolding before me, and she quickly followed my gaze, her expression nearly matching mine as she took in the scene in front of us. "What the hell?" she whispered, causing the guys she was with to ask what was going on. She opened her mouth to respond, but I interjected, saying it was nothing and that I needed a drink. One of the guys suggested we go back to the bar, at which point Lux wrapped her arm around my waist and looked up at me with sad, stunned eyes. She must have figured out why I did not come back inside and realized I was with Kairos—the same Kairos who was now all over someone else.Plus, despite trying to walk straight, I was pretty sure she could see the limp in my step. My ass felt like it was on fire. I tried to fake a smile in response to her touch to hide the devastation inside me, but even I could tell I was doing a bad job. I was dead

Lux"Get away from him, you psycho!" I yelled again, taking long strides toward Lake and the girl who still would not let him go, and yanked him out of her grasp. She tried to explain that she was just comforting him, but I refused to listen and told her to leave. What the hell? One minute she was all over Kairos, and the next trying to pass for Lake's friend?“What the hell is she trying to pull?” I muttered as she disappeared around the corner, wondering if that damn Kairos had anything to do with what she was up to. I had never harbored such intense resentment for someone I didn't even know as I did for that bastard. “It’s alright. I’m here. You are OK,” I whispered as Lake clung to me, realizing just how wasted he was. I had never seen him so out of it.Helping him stand straighter, I draped his arm over my shoulder, and we began to walk out of the bathroom. He was stumbling badly, causing me to sway as well, and I realized I would need assistance getting him back into our room.

  • Coming Out of the Deep    Chapter 19: Superhuman

Third Person’s POVReed and Darian dashed onto the balcony, coming to a halt abruptly as their gazes fell on Lake's twisted body lying against the wall. Their gaze shifted to Kairos, who stood motionless for a heartbeat before collapsing to the ground. The sight of Kairos' face, marred by dark, pulsating veins and feral golden eyes, shocked both men, and neither spoke, too stunned and horrified to process what had just happened.Reed recovered first, his instincts honed over years of training kicking in. "Darian, help me," he exclaimed, rushing to close the balcony door that separated them from the chaos of the party below. He flipped the lock with quick movements and turned back to Kairos, who was now in Darian's arms. Crouching down, they both examined his shallow breathing, and Darian's mind raced with anxiety as he looked up at Reed. "Which way to the car?" he asked urgently, but Reed had a different idea.“We can’t take him back to the dorms. It’s too far, and if someone sees h

  • Coming Out of the Deep    Chapter 18: The Demon

Third Person's POV Three Minutes Earlier Kairos’s gaze burned into the scene unfolding before him, each second a fresh twist to his chest as the heat of jealousy surged through him, maddening and stifling. Every movement of Lake's hands on Olivia, her hips grinding against him, her face so close to his set Kairos' blood on fire, and merfolk blood rarely ran hot. He wanted to storm over there, yank Lake from her grip, and remind him who he belonged to. He wanted to shout it, tell everyone, and claim what was rightfully his with every ounce of power the ocean had given him. "Mine!" The word rang so loudly in his head that he could not figure out why no one else seemed to hear it, why Lake did not notice and see what he was doing to him. He had no right to let anyone else touch him like that, and no land maiden had the right to try. Merfolk didn’t sweat like humans did. Their cooler body temperature regulated such things, and only when dehydrated did they begin to show signs—a f

  • Coming Out of the Deep    Chapter 17: Possessiveness

Lux’s POVThe surrounding crowd was wild, a swirling storm of cheers and hollers, with enough energy to make you feel drunk without even touching a drink. They were losing it, shouting encouragement and hyping up the group, completely unaware of the storm brewing within me.I couldn't take my eyes off the scene in front of me. Olivia sat on Lake's lap, grinding her hips as if she were trying to set the room on fire. Her face was inches from his, their lips almost touching as his hands moved up and down her waist, guiding her movements as if they were perfectly in sync. They seemed to have forgotten there was an entire room full of people watching, and my lips parted, hanging open as I stared.I had never seen him so invested in a girl—so intense. And it wasn’t just the physicality—the way his hands moved or the way her body curled into his—but the focus—the way he seemed lost in her. I despised it, and a dark wave of possessiveness surged through me before I could control it. I want

  • Coming Out of the Deep    Chapter 16: Game Time

Lake’s POVReed's voice boomed over the music, cutting through the chatter to get our attention. “Alright, people! It’s game time!” Cheers erupted throughout the room as he stood on one of the sofas, waving his hands dramatically in the air.He started going through all the activities they had lined up, and we were all totally on board since morning felt like ages away. “Alright, we’re kicking things off with a drinking game,” he said, gesturing toward the long table in the center of the room. “We need everyone around the table. Pick your squad and let the shenanigans begin!”We all waddled over to the table, the atmosphere crackling with giggles and the occasional splash of drinks flying about like confetti. Lux and I took our places at one end, and I did my best to pretend the tightness in my chest was just my lunch making a comeback when I spotted Kairos hanging out at the back of the room, the girl next to him playing tug-of-war with his arm. She was all grins and chuckles as she

Lux’s POVOlivia's face lit up with a not-so-shy smile as she hurried over to Becca, pulling her into an enthusiastic hug, and I stared at them, trying to reconcile the timid girl I had met earlier with the one now standing in front of me in a dress so short it was practically a top.She chuckled as they pulled away from the hug, her confidence shining through as she and Becca chatted excitedly. And I couldn’t look away. This Olivia was nothing like the one who had quietly chatted with Lake back on campus. Her once shy demeanor had transformed into something completely different, and it made me feel even more uneasy.“What are you looking at?” Lake's voice jolted me out of my trance, and I turned to see him looking at me curiously before following my gaze to Olivia. His brows rose in recognition.“I thought she was supposed to be shy or something?” I said, still in disbelief, and Lake looked back at her and then at me, a knowing look spreading across his face. He reached out and put a

Lux’s POVThe air was thick with excitement as Lake turned to face me, his eyes sparkling with anticipation. "Are you ready to go?" he asked, and I nodded, grabbing my crossbody bag and looking in the mirror one last time. "Ready." The hum of the city was subtle as we ventured out into the cool evening. Alec had offered to pick us up, but we opted for an Uber instead. When we arrived at the curb, the car was already waiting, its black exterior gleaming beneath the dorm lights. We slid inside, and as we drove away, I noticed the driver taking a different route than we had taken to get in. The dormitory buildings on this side were even more impressive, and the sheer size of the campus hit me again.“When we thought this place was big,” I murmured to Lake. “We had no idea.” And he agreed, fixing his gaze out the window. “It’s massive.” The car pulled out of the institution's gates, and we were treated to another glimpse of Silverglade. My eyes widened in wonder, just as they had on
