Aubrey's pov ;

"I'm going home," I said quickly, cutting off whatever response Alex was about to throw back. I didn't need another punch being thrown or more insults exchanged. This was getting out of hand. I felt Ryder's hand tighten around mine, his body still tense as he shot one last glare at Alex.

"Are you sure?" Alex asked, his voice calm again, his eyes flicking toward Ryder's hand on me.

"Yes, Alex, I'm sure. Thank you for everything, but just—just go, okay?" My voice was softer now, more pleading than before. The last thing I needed was for things to escalate further.

He hesitated, eyes flicking between me and Ryder before nodding, giving me a concerned look. "Alright. Call me if you need anything."

I nodded, watching as Alex walked away, leaving me standing there with Ryder.

As soon as Alex was out of sight, Ryder exhaled loudly, releasing his hold on me. I could feel his eyes on me, burning with anger and something else I didn't want to admit—hurt. He turned to face me full

    Aubrey's pov ;I turned around and faced Ryder, my eyes blazing with frustration. "What is your problem?"I demanded, my voice sharp.He looked at me, his expression a mix of desperation and confusion, as if he was grasping for some explanation, but none came easily.His gaze flickered as he tried to find his words. "The contract,"he finally said, almost like he was clinging to it. "Have you forgotten about it?"I scoffed, crossing my arms. "No, Ryder, I haven't forgotten. What does that have to do with anything?"He rubbed the back of his neck, clearly agitated, his eyes darting around the room as if looking for some kind of escape. "I don't like it when you're with another man. Why can't you understand that?"His words hung in the air between us, and I stared at him, completely baffled. "Why?"I shot back, my voice rising. "Why don't you like it? What difference does it make to you?"He opened his mouth to respond, b

    Aubrey's pov ;I stared at my phone, the screen lighting up with yet another text from Gregory.We need to talk. It's important. Come to my house.I sighed and tossed the phone onto the table. The messages had been coming non-stop since last night, each one more insistent than the last. Apologies, explanations—he was desperate to talk to me after what happened.But honestly, I wasn't ready. How could I be? After that night, after the way he crossed a line?I glanced at Sophia, who was casually eating her cake across from me, completely unbothered by my growing frustration. She'd already voiced her opinion, but I knew she wasn't done."You know," she said between bites, "you don't have to go. If you don't want to deal with him right now, don't.""I know, but..." I trailed off, glancing at the latest text again. "I owe him, Sophia. He's done a lot for me, and I can't just ignore that."Sophia snorted, setting her fork down.

    Ryder's pov ;Sage sat on the edge of my desk, legs crossed, eyes gleaming with mischief. "Come on, Ryder. It's been ages. Don't you want to spend some time together like we used to in college? Let's go to the movies!"I sighed, my hands gripping the armrests of my chair as I leaned back, staring at her with half-hearted patience. My mind was elsewhere, tangled in thoughts of Aubrey.Lately, it felt like everything about her occupied my head, making it impossible to focus on anything or anyone else."I can't, Sage. I've got a meeting in half an hour,"I said flatly, not bothering to mask the irritation creeping into my voice.She pouted, the familiar whine in her tone grating on my nerves. "You're always busy now. We never get to hang out anymore. Is this because of her? Is she giving you a hard time again like she used to three years ago, always calling you asking for dinner and blah blah!"I stiffened at the accusation but didn't resp

My hands were shaking, my breath uneven.Ryder.For some reason, my feet instinctively wanted to take me to him. Why Ryder? I wasn't even sure. But something inside me—a desperate need for safety—pulled me toward him, toward the one person who, despite everything, still felt like some kind of tether to reality.And I found myself standing in front of his company.I walked into the building, hoping he was still around. As I crossed the lobby, I asked one of the receptionists, "Is Ryder here? I…I need to see him."My voice cracked, making me sound more vulnerable than I intended.The woman gave me a smile but before she could answer, a familiar voice interrupted us."What are you doing here?"Sage's voice came sharp and full of venom from across the room. Aubrey's pov ;I stood there, still reeling from the chaos that Sage had created. My head throbbed from the employees whispers and exchanged glances.Sage continued to cry and whine, clutching Ryder as if her life depended on it.And Ryder—he stood there, his face full of confusion and something else I couldn't quite place. But it wasn't the sharp disapproval I expected. No, there was something softer in his gaze as he glanced at me."It must be a misunderstanding," Ryder said, his voice calm, though I could tell he wasn't entirely sure. He still hadn't let go of Sage, who was clinging to him, tears streaming down her face.I froze. Did he just defend me?My breath caught in my throat. Of all the people in the world, Ryder was the last person I expected to stand up for me—especially in front of her. Ryder's pov ;I grabbed my phone and dialed Sophia, my fingers trembling slightly as I waited for her to pick up. The longer the phone rang, the tighter the knot in my stomach grew. It wasn't like Aubrey to be out this late without saying something."Sophia?"I asked the moment she answered, not bothering with pleasantries. "Where is Aubrey? Is she with you?"There was a brief pause on the other end, and I could hear her shifting around, maybe getting out of bed. "No, Isn't she home?""She hasn't come back yet,"I muttered, trying to keep my voice steady, but the worry was starting to crawl under my skin, making it harder to think straight. "It's 3 a.m., Sophia. She's not answering her phone. Where could she be?"Another pause. I could hear the hesitation in her breathing, and that made my pulse quicken."She went to meet Gregory this afternoon,"Sophia said slowly, as if she was treading carefully with her words. "After that,

    Ryder's pov ;I gently lifted her from the car, careful not to jostle her more than necessary. Aubrey was still shivering, even though I'd wrapped my jacket around her.Once we were in the house, I laid her down on the bed as carefully as I could, tucking the blanket around her. Her face was pale, her eyes red from crying, and it felt like she was just barely holding on. I started to turn away, intending to call the doctor, but her hand shot out, grabbing my wrist."Stay..." Her voice was trembling. "Please, Ryder…don't leave. I…I feel like Gregory will come again."The fear in her eyes gutted me. I could barely recognize her like this—so broken, so vulnerable. How could I have let this happen? I should've been there sooner. I should've protected her.I sat back down, pulling her into my arms, holding her tightly against me. "I swear, Aubrey, I'll kill him for what he did to you. I'll make him pay for laying his hands on you."

I turned slightly to see him already awake, watching me with a guarded expression. His usual sharpness seemed dulled."You should rest,"he said quietly, breaking the silence. "The doctor will be here again in a few hours."I sat up slowly. He wasn't asking, he was telling me to rest. But why wasn't he asking about last night? About what Gregory had done? I bit my lip, hesitating for a moment. The questions burned in my chest, and I couldn't stay silent any longer."I want to go to the police station,"I said abruptly.That stopped him. His eyes hardened, and the softness I had seen earlier vanished, replaced by a firm, controlled expressio

I'd found my footing not just as a wife, but as a businesswoman.Balancing work and life had been a challenge at first, but now, as I stood in front of the crowd, delivering another speech at this business event, I felt confident and proud.I glanced at the audience, scanning the room as I spoke about leadership and resilience, and then my eyes found him—Ryder. That we could find our way back to each other, no matter how broken we were.That love really was stronger than any pain.Without breaking the kiss, he lifted me up into his arms, carrying me to the bedroom, our lips never parting.I ran my fingers over his chest, his shoulders, his arms, trying to re-memorize every little detail.My back hit the mattress, and a rush of nerves and adrenaline made my skin feel hot and prickly, as if it was too small for me. As if the tiniest thing could make me burst into a thousand pieces.And then he was there. --------------------------Aubrey's pov----------------------I stared at my packed bags sitting on the floor. The sight of them made my stomach twist with dread, but I couldn't shake the feeling that I needed to leave. My heart was heavy, weighed down by too many emotions—grief, guilt, love—and no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't make sense of any of it. I thought leaving would make it easier, but standing here now, it felt like I was suffocating.Two days ago, Ryder and I had come back home, bruised and messed up. The cops had called today and they told me Sage's body had been found. My sister was—dead.I should have felt something more. Shock. Pain. Something. But all I felt was a strange numbness creeping through me.Sage had been meandering for so long, I always feared something like this would happen, but hearing it was real now…it was like I was caught between relief and guilt. And somewhere deep inside me, I knew it was better this way. The kind of things Sage did, the path

    Sage's pov ;The van's interior reeked of sweat and metal, and I could feel every bump and turn as we sped through the streets. My heart pounded in my chest, my mind racing with a thousand thoughts, but all of them boiled down to one thing—how the hell had everything gone so wrong?My wrists were tied behind my back, the ropes cutting into my skin, but I didn't dare show weakness. Not in front of these thugs. They were pissed off, and I could feel their eyes burning into me from the front seat. I could hear them muttering under their breaths, cursing me, blaming me for the whole mess.The biggest one, the one with the scar running down his cheek, twisted in his seat to glare at me. "You said the cops wouldn't be involved," he growled, his voice low and threatening. "Now look at us! We're on the fucking *wanted list*.""I—" I started, but another thug cut me off, his voice filled with barely controlled fury."Those guys who got caught? If they open their mouths, we're done for. Ryder's pov ;The moment I saw Aubrey, my heart nearly stopped. She was on the cold floor, her body trembling, clothes torn away, weak and exposed. Her eyes were wide with fear, and they locked onto mine and for a brief second, I saw relief in them the moment she saw me.But she was still in shock, and appeared too paralyzed to even move, too broken to understand that I was here for her now.Without thinking, I tore off my jacket and rushed to her side, wrapping it around her trembling body. "Aubrey…" My voice snapped, seeing her like this ravaged something inside me. I pulled her close to me to shield her from the nightmare that surrounded her right now.She clutched the jacket tight, but her hands were shaking. "R-Ryder…" Her voice was a mere whisper, barely audible over the pounding in my ears.I cupped her face, forcing her to look at me. "Are you alright?" I already know the answer. She was anything but fine but still I want her to stay something.She just nodded but I knew how h

    Sage's pov ;"Do whatever you guys want with her before we kill her!"The scarred man held her wrists firmly, forcing her to stay still. The others in the room chuckled, their dark amusement matching my own. This was my moment, a long time coming."Stop! Don't touch me!" She cried out and looked extremely scared.I rolled my eyes, walking toward her, my heels clicking ominously on the floor. "Oh, stop pretending. Where's that filthy slut you used to be?" I sneered, grabbing her chin roughly and forcing her to look at me. "Now you're playing innocent?"I slapped her again, the sharp crack of my hand against her cheek making the others in the room snicker. "Dirty bitch, don't act like you're worth more than this."She whimpered as one of the men ripped her shirt, exposing her to all of us. I loved seeing her like this, powerless and afraid. I had waited too long for this moment, and I was going to savor every second of it. She had always thought she was better than me. She thought Ryder

    Ryder's pov ;I sat in my office, the dim light casting long shadows across the room. The bottle of whiskey on my desk was nearly empty, the amber liquid swirling in the glass as I took another slow sip. The burn did little to dull the pain, to drown out the constant noise in my head.Aubrey's face kept flashing before my eyes—her pain, her anger. The way she looked at me when I tried to explain…like I was nothing. Like I wasn't worth her time anymore.I deserved it. All of it.The truth had come out, but it was too late. I should've listened to her three years ago. I should've believed her when she told me something was wrong. Instead, I let my arrogance, my doubt, destroy everything we had. Everything we could have been. And now, I've lost her.I exhaled sharply, the sound bitter in the silence of the office. The door creaked open behind me, and I didn't bother to turn around. I already knew who it was. Her perfume filled the air&mda

Whoever did this knew what they were doing, but it's clear they're not real."Aubrey blinked, her face frozen in shock, as if the words hadn't fully registered."They're…fake?"she repeated.I turned to her, my chest tightening as I took in her reaction. "Aubrey," I said softly, stepping closer, "I told you. I never cheated. Sage did this to drive us apart, to make you believe something that wasn't true."She stood there, silent, her mind clearly reeling from the revelation. Her disbelief was evident, but so was the confusion that clouded her eyes. Slowly, she turned to face me, her expression unreadable.I took a deep breath, trying to reach her. "I'm sorry it took so long, Aubrey. I'm sorry I didn't listen to you before. But now you know the truth. Please…let me fix this. Let me make it right."

    Ryder's pov ;I stormed into Aubrey's company, my heart pounding in my chest, barely able to keep my thoughts straight. The receptionist called after me, but I didn't care.I barged into the meeting room without knocking, ignoring the surprised looks of her colleagues as I interrupted whatever discussion they were having. Aubrey, seated at the head of the table, looked shocked, her eyes wide as they landed on me."Ryder?" Her voice was tight, confused. "What the hell are you doing here?"I was breathing heavily, my heart racing, but I didn't have time for formalities. "I need to talk to you. It's important, Aubrey. Those photos…they're fake."The room was dead silent, all eyes on us, and Aubrey's expression shifted to something between annoyance and exhaustion. She sighed, glancing around the table at the others. "Ryder, I'm in a meeting. We'll talk later.""No." My voice came out sharper than I intended, but I couldn't stop myself. I was desperate.
