Clara held her breath. There was blatant interest in his eyes, and it scared her that he would kiss her right there and then.
His eyes were so intensely green right now, and she couldn’t look away. It was like there was nobody else but them in the elevator, and all she could hear was her heart beating loudly in her chest.
The more she spent time with him, the more she felt compelled to do whatever it was he wanted. ‘Kiss me,’ her brain said. Looking into his eyes was a mistake. It drew her in like you would imagine a vampire mesmerizing his prey. He had a very tiny scar on his upper lip that she wanted to run her lips over.
The ding of the elevator saved her from embarrassing herself. She almost collapsed on the floor, if not for the wall behind her holding her up. Nobody had affected her this much before. Come to think of it, all they’ve been doing so far was to stare at each other, but she was in way over her head. She was doomed and needed to get out of there as soon as possible.
Escape had been on her mind the minute they reached the lobby, but Sebastian’s driver was already in front of the building by the time they got there, so they had no choice but to get into the same car. She wanted to decline and make excuses before she made a fool of herself, but it was too late. Now she had to suffer through lunch.
Clara had to pretend nothing happened in the elevators as she got in the back seat of Sebastian’s Bentley. Her plan was to have Jeremy sit in the middle while she sat at the window behind the driver. That way, she could ignore Sebastian while Jeremy entertained him.
But Sebastian had plans of his own. He got in behind the driver, which left Clara in the middle seat, sandwiched between him and her brother.
He occupied more than his share of the seat, and no matter how hard she tried to avoid getting close to him, some parts of their bodies were always touching. She was suffocating or getting electrified, whichever came first, and she was not happy about it.
She could feel the heat emanating from his body. His legs spread out a little too wide, and they were rubbing against her left thigh. She tried not to let it affect her, doing her breathing exercises to relax. But his arm seemed to graze hers every time the car moved, and that unnerved her a little. They were sitting a little too close together if you asked her.
She tried to move away from him, as far as it would allow, but Jeremy didn’t want to cooperate. He kept on scolding her to stop squirming. She was just trying to find a comfortable position that could keep her from leaning on the other side. What was wrong with that?
Sebastian was tormenting her, and she’s had enough, so she elbowed her brother and told him to switch places with her.
‘Are you scared to sit close to me?’ Sebastian whispered. She could feel his lips hover a little too close to her ear, and she could not stop the goosebumps on her arm from appearing.
‘No,’ she said hastily, ignoring the fast beating of her heart, ‘I just wanted to sit near the window. I get a little claustrophobic in enclosed spaces,’ she explained as she tried to move over and hop over Jeremy. But Sebastian was not having it. He knew that she was trying to get away, so he pulled her waist back towards him.
‘Oh no!’ she thought, ‘He will not make me sit on his lap, this pervert.’ So she tried to execute one of her self-defense moves on him, ‘An elbow to the face would be satisfying,’ she thought. But before she could do anything, Sebastian deposited her butt near the window. ‘Here,’ he says, ‘You can take my window seat,’ smirking because he knew he had outsmarted her.
Jeremy wanted to laugh out loud. His sister was done for. Sebastian was smarter than she thought, and it seemed like he wasn’t taking no for an answer when it came to getting her to pay attention to him.
She pretended to straighten her clothes as she looked out the window. It pissed her off that he definitely won this round, so she tried to ignore him. But he won’t be Sebastian if he can’t have his way.
He whispered in her ear, ‘You look very pretty when you’re flustered. Do you like how I affect you?’
She wanted to slap his smug face right there and then but remembered about their project, so instead, she took a deep breath and tried to think of a smart comeback when the car stopped in front of their restaurant. ‘Saved again,’ she thought as she ran to the restroom.
For the rest of lunch, Jeremy did everything to divert the attention away from Clara. Talking about business the whole time or touching on his hobbies and other minor projects he has been working on. Sebastian knew that the siblings were tag-teaming him right now, and they wouldn’t let him make his moves on Clara. Which was fine for him. There was another time and place for all that.
But Clara did not know Sebastian would give up so easily, so she promised Jeremy an irrevocable favor if he kept Sebastian off her back for the rest of the trip. It was one of those rare favors she gave out where he could call on her whenever, wherever, with no questions asked, and it was something she could never refuse. Of course, all within the bounds of moral and ethical guidelines.
Jeremy looked at his sister and winked. He was going to have fun with this. Clara rarely gives out these so-called favors anymore, learning her lessons over the years. These favors were not life-threatening or life-altering, but the boys liked that they pissed her off when they called on her to do them. She has so many conditions that you would think you were doing her a favor and not the other way around.
Jeremy was reminiscing, recalling the one time when they woke her up in the middle of the night to make her bake them a chocolate cake because they were drunk. It was a disaster because one, she’s never made a cake her entire life, and two because the kitchen was a mess, and she had to clean it up afterward.
Because of her competitive nature, she did not let that setback defeat her. She learned how to bake a proper cake later, which turned out to be a good thing after all.
Jeremy did not know what they were talking about when Clara started kicking him under the table. With her murderous glare, it seems like Sebastian had touched a raw nerve. ‘Deal’s off,’ Clara mouths to him and uses her finger to slash her throat.
‘Jeremy, maybe you can answer me this question,’ Sebastian said. ‘What exactly happened last night? Your sister said it was food poisoning, but was it that painful that it made her cry?’
Jeremy laughed out loud, which surprised both Sebastian and Clara. The image Sebastian painted was so funny that he couldn’t stop. ‘Ha ha ha… your butt... hurt too much… ha ha ha… you started crying… ha ha ha…’
Sebastian smiled. His question sounded a little weird. Glad that Jeremy was able to diffuse the situation because he could see Clara getting pissed when he kept trying to pry about what happened last night.
‘Your butt’s going to hurt a lot later. It’ll make you cry,’ she warned, ‘if you don’t stop with this nonsense,’ she said, embarrassed. Her brothers were a handful most of the time, and she did not expect Jeremy to go through fits of laughter right in front of their client.
‘I’m sorry for my brother. I think we should end lunch here before he thinks of something else embarrassing to say,’ she said as she excused herself to the bathroom once again.
Clara had been quiet on the plane ride home. She had a lot of things to process. Was she really Carmen Jacobs? Is that going to be good or bad? What does that mean for her and her brothers when they finally find her family? Will they be welcoming? Of course, she would not abandon her brothers for anyone, she’s spent most of her life with them already, and they would continue to be together. It just meant that, finally, she would have closure. She did not remember if she had pictures when she was younger. Not even one with Max and Jeremy as kids. In fact, they were so poor that pictures would get taken only for records and identification. So she had nothing to compare to the photo in that news article. At an age when kids were making memories with their friends, she was already working. In her hand, sh
‘I’m so glad all three of you are here today. I haven’t seen you in a long time, and my, how you’ve all grown. Max and Jeremy, you boys are still very handsome.’ Mrs. Powell patted their cheeks. ‘Don’t make the girls cry, okay?’ and they both smiled. ‘And you, my dear, have become more beautiful. A little thinner than before and with dark circles around the eyes, but still beautiful,’ she lovingly caressed Clara’s cheek. ‘Have you been sleeping well these days? I saw your article in the newspaper and congratulations on the launch of your new product. Some of your staff installed a few of your cameras here as well, but I doubt we’ll need it.’ The Powell family and the Johnson siblings have known each other for 10 years. Mr. and Mrs. Powell asked the siblings to call them Ma and Pa, just like everybody else.
Six months. Sebastian was supposed to see Clara again in six months, according to the contract. But that was way too long for him to wait to see her again. He was getting antsy and frustrated. ‘How is this relationship ever going to start when she ices me out? I’ve been texting her almost every day, and all she gives me is her one-word answers. Ugh!’ The last time he saw Clara, he thought they had made progress. Sure, he might have annoyed her a little, but he thought being honest was the key. And instead of acknowledging his feelings, she blocked them. Jeremy kept him from spending any time alone with her after they had come back from the restaurant. He had business to take care of, but Clara filled his thoughts. She hadn’t even done anything special to catch his attention, except by rejecting his advances and telling him she wasn’t interested. It seemed to
‘Take a seat, Sebastian. We all know you did not come here to complain about the security system we’ve installed or to ask for more enhancements, or even to give us feedback.’ ‘We have been monitoring your system for three weeks. It has undergone extreme scrutiny by your own security team, and so far, it has proven to be stable. So let’s cut the bullshit.’ ‘I know you’ve had our family investigated, and you already know that all three of us come from the same orphanage.’ Jeremy started. Sebastian shrugged, not denying his accusation. ‘Did you find anything useful?’ he inclined his head and moved his lips, showing he found nothing. ‘We love Clara to death. She is our whole world, and we will do everything possible to protect her.’ ‘She is not one of your busines
Clara couldn’t stop thinking about Sebastian, from the cute way he smiled to the intense way he looked at her. She could not forget how he flirted with her the last time they were together. In the elevator, where she almost kissed him willingly, his green eyes hypnotizing her. Then inside his car, when they were sitting side by side. How she could still feel his breath, or maybe his lips when he whispered in her ear. She shuddered just thinking about it. She spent 2 hours exercising in the pool this morning to forget about him and it surprised her when it worked. Her workout had been so invigorating that she started tackling all the paperwork on her desk like she had a deadline. But then, as soon as he showed up in front of her, she felt doomed. Her heart skipped a beat when she looked up and saw his smiling face right there in her office.
‘There she is with her secret smile again. What was she smiling about, anyway?’ Sebastian wondered as he looked at her expectantly. He was still prepared to persuade her with his steely eyes if she offered another excuse, but she surprised him when she acquiesced. Clara raises her eyebrows and looks at Sebastian, ‘How are you riding with me? Did you bring your own bike, or do I need to carry you on my handlebars?’ ‘I don’t think I have a spare bike, but maybe you can use Max’s bike. I think you’re almost the same height, right?’ ‘I have my bike strapped to my car. I... Uhm... I brought my riding shorts. Do you mind if I change in the restroom and leave my clothes here? I can walk down with you,’ he said it like he had everything planned out. He sounded a littl
As Clara took her bike from the locker, she thought of multiple ways to get out of her promise because somewhere along the way, from her office to the lockers, she lost her courage. When she saw Sebastian outside, riding his bike around the parking lot, she knew there was no backing out. It surprised him when he saw her. ‘My girl has so many different facets to her personality. And each time she looks different and more beautiful,’ She looked so hot in her tight spandex shorts that his desire shot up, and he had to adjust his shorts to make his bulge less obvious, but making it uncomfortable to sit on his bike. He had to think about something that would keep his mind out of the gutter otherwise, he wouldn’t be able to ride with her. He was like a schoolboy, watc
Sebastian had finished showering and getting dressed when he heard someone whimpering, so he went to investigate. Clara was dreaming and thrashing around like she was fighting someone. ‘No, no.. she said, whimpering... Celine... hide... Celine…,’ tears were coming from her eyes. The minute she started whimpering, he rubbed her arms and her back, comforting her like a child, ‘Shhh.. shhh..,’ He said, ‘It’s okay…. Shhh…. It’s okay…,’ she started quieting down, and when he had his arms wrapped around her. She went back to sleep. Clara’s secretary called her brothers to come up for lunch as she laid the food on the table, but nobody was in the office, and she did not know if Clara had come back from her bike ride, so she left. Her brothers came in laughing. They were teasing each other and betting again on where they
-=- Downstairs, the hotel staff had cleared the entire outdoor area to accommodate the most important event happening today. They place an arch covered in vines and calla lilies on the outer edge, overlooking the beach and the sea. Sebastian tried to do everything not to let the cat out of the bag. This event was going to be a surprise. And even though deep in his heart he knew her answer, that she wanted to marry him, he still couldn’t help but feel apprehensive about her reaction. Clara was not a simple person. She was very complex in her reactions and outbursts. He prayed to all the gods in heaven to help them today. There was no denying that as soon as Clara steps in front of the doors that led to the patio, she would know what he had planned for her because waiting at the door was her father, Nathan Jacobs.
Max, Jeremy, and apparently her sister, Celine, were inside waiting for them, waving their hands and screaming simultaneously. Sebastian walked them back into the hallway to keep her state of undress from prying eyes. The couple laughed at their predicament as she unwrapped her legs around him. Clara gave him one last lingering kiss, and when they were ready, headed back into the room. ‘Why are you guys inside our suite? Who let you in?’ ‘We got in last night, and you said you wanted to rehearse and set up the equipment before the presentation, so here we are,’ Max said with jazz hands waving in the air. She just rolled her eyes. ‘You guys are too early. I still need a nap. Can you leave?’ she plopped down on the sofa and snuggled with a pillow. The
I was sitting in my living room writing up Max’s story when this alternate ending came to me and got me excited. The following chapters were going to be part of his book, but I decided you need to be rewarded for reading all the way to the end of Clara’s story. I hope you enjoy this alternate ending. -=- ‘Clara! The plane is leaving in two hours, and there is a major accident in the 405. If we do not make it in time, you will not make your appointment.’ Sebastian yells as he walks to their bedroom. Their meeting at 2 pm is irrevocable, and nothing should impede them from keeping it. This will be the most important appointment of their lives. Clara rolls her eyes. ‘We have two hours, relax. Even in this traffic, we have enough time to make it. Your driver knows all the shortcuts. Plus, Jeremy and
Ariana was found tied up and gagged in one of the hotel’s janitor closets, one that was not normally checked until the morning. Because she was resilient and determined to alert anybody to Clara’s disappearance, she made enough ruckus for one of the hotel guests to notice and call for help. Clara felt relieved to have found her the next day. Thankfully, she had been released from the hospital with a few scratches and bandages on her head and arm. The bad guys banged her head enough to give her a concussion, so she had to be kept overnight for observation. She twisted her arm from trying to get out of the restraints, and when she continued to throw her body against the door to attract someone’s attention. Ariana was very resilient, and Clara liked that she fought until the end. Now that the threat to Celine and Clara’s life had been eliminated, with the bad gu
-=- This chapter is R18. If you are not over 18, please skip this chapter and proceed to Chapter 124. -=- Clara laughs. Sebastian knew this was a serious situation, but after being rejected earlier, he trod lightly and opted for the easygoing route. ‘I love you, Baz. Thank you for being patient with me.’ Clara looked at him lovingly and caressed his face, kissing his lips lightly as she closed her eyes. The fire was back in her eyes. He hated being the one that took it away from her by making her worry and question everything they were to each other. But now, he would make sure that he would do everything in his power, never to extinguish that again. He would do everything to make her happy.
Boss runs away as Nathan and Clara bend down to tend to Nicholas. But the cops had already surrounded the house by then, and they apprehended him as he tried to run away, just like the other goon that tried to escape earlier. Sebastian, on the other hand, fought off Spike, disarming the gun from him when Boss fired the shot. Spike had no fighting chance, and he knew as soon as Sebastian got his weapon, he was going to jail. With the criminals arrested and Clara’s uncle carted away to the hospital, they were all finally able to settle down and take a seat. Everybody was pretty shaken up, and the women sniffled from time to time as they recounted what happened. They huddled with each other, Emilia Jacobs holding onto her daughters to seek comfort and assurance that the nightmare was over. Sebastian took
The house was eerily quiet when they got home. ‘Mom! Dad! I’m home!’ Clara called out as she came in through the door. That should have been an indication that something was wrong because they had left the front door unlocked. When none of the regular security was present around the property, she just assumed they blended in with the background. But her excitement at getting away from her abductors got the better of her. She did not apply the regular protocols for security. Her mom, dad, and sister sat on the sofa in a neat line, with their hands behind her back, their mouths covered with tape. The gun she felt pointed at the side of her head made everything click into place. The kidnappers had a backup plan, and they were waiting at her parent’s home. They took the whole family hostage as a las
Spike proceeded to tape Clara’s mouth but didn’t expect her to be awake. She bit down hard on his hand, inflicting so much pain that he slapped her across the face, dislodging her blindfold enough so she could see through the bottom. Clara kicks Spike between his thighs, rendering him immobile for a few minutes. Enough time for Clara to bring the hands tied behind her back under her knees. She had to bring them in front of her, making it easier to get out of the zip ties that bound them together. Clara falls flat on her face even before she can get anywhere. Spike had come out of the sensation of having his balls kicked enough to slide his feet and trip her. He holds a knife to her neck, pinning her to the floor. She had no choice but to surrender. She fights him again when he pulls Clara up to tie her agai
Nicholas Jacobs had been watching Clara and Celine as closely as everyone else ever since the kidnappers came back and threatened to take them again. When he saw Clara sneak out into the restroom with nobody following her, he decided to take it upon himself to do it. Clara did not trust him after what he did, but he did not care. It was better to be safe than sorry. Clara could yell at him if that's what she wanted. He deserves it, after all. He pretended to make a phone call, hiding near the men’s restroom doors. When he saw two uniformed hotel staff come out of the women’s restroom with a hotel trolley, the kind used to carry all the sheets and linens from rooms that have been emptied and he grew suspicious. These men didn’t look like the regular hotel staff. They looked more buff and were suspiciously gruff-looking, covered with all those tattoos. So when they left, he checked inside the restroom, and
