Serena’s POV
Derek! My world crumbled before me as I stared at him in the embrace of another, they slowly moved along to the music and the woman's features became clearer. “What?” A wave of disbelief washed over me and my throat tightened with hot tears that threatened to spill over. I knew her! I knew who the woman was. Cynthia, my best friend and training partner. But didn’t she say she was sick? My eyes were wide as I stared at them. Derek was cheating on me with my friend! I suddenly felt very dizzy. My shirek had attracted stares my way and Derek suddenly looked up and his eyes met mine. “Serena,” his face changed and he froze. A stab of pain shot through me as I met Cynthia's surprised face, she didn't look guilty. She stared at me as a look of pity filled her features. Derek let go of her as he took a few steps forward, “Serena, I can ex…” “I trusted you,” my voice trembled as I stared at him, ignoring the gazes that focused on us as the hall settled into a stunned silence. “I…” Derek tried to speak but I wasn't hearing any of it. I quickly turned around and ran from the crowd as the tears began to run down my face. How could he? My sight blurred with tears as I bumped into a waiter, spilling over a tray of drinks to the floor. “Sorry,” I sobbed, not stopping as I stumbled away. All I wanted to do was leave this place, I had to be dreaming, this couldn't be real. What was the problem? Was I not enough for him? Painful sobs began to wrack through my body and I couldn’t hold it in anymore. The pain in my heart was too much! I'd just gotten to the door when someone pulled me, drawing me to the side. I tensed as the scent of Derek's cologne filled my nostrils and I struggled in his grasp. “Let me go, how could you?” My body trembled with sobs as I shook. I looked up through tears to stare at him, his eyes avoided mine and I saw a flash of guilt in their depths. “Serena, please I can explain, it’s not what you think,” I stiffened and struggled out of his grasp when he tried to hold me. “It's all a misunderstanding.” “A misunderstanding?” I exploded, anger and pain filling me. “I saw you, Derek! You and her. Together.” My voice lowered to a whisper, “How's that a misunderstanding?” “I-I..” Derek's eyes evaded mine as he stammered. “She doesn’t mean anything to me, honey. It’s you I love. She’s your training partner, I was just talking to her about expanding our training center.” He stuttered and my vision turned red. “You were talking to her about training Derek? Do I look like a fucking child to you? So you talk about training by kissing and hugging in public right? Do you take me for a a fucking fool Derek?” I screamed incredulously. A flash went past his eyes and his expression hardened. “Can you keep your voice down, Serena? People will hear us!” He snapped, his cold voice made me shiver. “Or what?” I whispered, and tears streamed down my face. “Let them hear us! At least they’ll know what a lying scumbag you are!” I yelled with tears pouring down my face. “You looked like you were two seconds away from tearing off her clothes back there! What kind of fucking training partner is that Derek?!” I couldn’t believe he dared to tell me such a terrible lie. Did he think I was that stupid? That I’d just believe his crap?! “You’re pushing it, Serena,” Derek snarled, his eye flashing with dark forbidding lights. “I've had enough of this,” a smile tugged at his lips. All of a sudden, there was a shift in his eyes, and his demeanor abruptly changed. The worry and panic in his eyes instantly disappeared and were replaced by something cold and sinister. I had never seen him look at me that way. “Fine Serena, you want to hear the truth?” Derek smiled mockingly. “Here it is….. Yes, I have been sleeping with her behind your back.” His words were like a bucketful of cold water had been splashed all over me. No, he didn’t mean it. I shook my head frantically, not wanting to believe his words. It had to be a lie, wasn't it? But even as I stared into his eyes, I saw the truth, he meant it. My body shuddered violently, the shock of his confession settling in. “Derek?” My voice was barely above a whisper. “How could you do this to me? After everything I have done for you?” I dabbed at my eyes, pressing down my tears. “Hahaha,” Derek suddenly burst into laughter, he stared at me like a fool. “What have you done Serena?” he sneered. “Just because you got me a good position at your father’s pack and gave me a few million doesn’t mean I should bow and worship you.” His words were like daggers that shot into me, sending stabs of pain into me. I couldn't even breathe as I stared at him, his words pushing me over the brink. Derek continued, not minding my white face. “Cynthia is the daughter of a well-respected nobleman too, and since your pack and family don’t even want you, she is ten times more valuable and more influential than you’ll ever be, I’m just using her to get the life I deserve.” He snarled. What! I felt a wave of nausea and I nearly threw up. His cold-hearted words sent a chill into me. All this while I'd thought the best years of my life were the moments I'd spent with him, but it turned out he'd been using me. “Derek,” I whispered. “I gave you everything! I gave you everything you asked, anything you wanted, whenever you wanted. I gave you all of me, even when I didn’t have anything for myself! How could you do this? How can you be such a fucking monster?!” No sooner had the words left my mouth, before Derek’s hand swung at my face, giving me a horrible hard slap that left me stumbling back in pain and shock. Derek slapped me. “You should know when to shut your fucking mouth, Serena,” Derek’s lips curled in a cold smile. “I've been itching to do that for years! You don’t know how hard it was for me not to show you my real self!” He snapped. “To listen to your poor pitiful self whine about how useless you are, you are useless Serena.” Derek spat in disgust, “You're useless not just to me, but also to the Alpha,” his words stunned me and I froze staring into the dark eyes of who was once my future. Now turned Nightmare. It wasn't over.Serena’s POV My heart thudded in my chest as I stared at Derek, my hands that cupped my cheek came away bloodstained. My eyes were still wide in disbelief. Derek slapped me? I stared at him, shock washing over me. My eyes swept over him, his strong slender hands that once cupped my cheeks now the weapon he used to inflict pain. But only the pain hadn’t come from his hands, his words were much worse. My eyes blurred with tears as his words echoed in my head at that moment. I was useless, good for nothing… and naive. “Take that back, Derek,” I sobbed and I wiped my tears away with the back of my hand. “Or what?” Derek scoffed, and he took a step forward. His threatening gaze pierced through me, “There's nothing you can do,” a cold smile tugged at his lips. “You…” Hot tears of pain and humiliation streamed down my face. This was all my fault! I had been such a fool to believe that anyone.. or worse, someone as handsome and talented as Derek could ever love someone like me. He'd
Serena’s POV What was going on? I felt the blood drain from my face as I tried to wrap my head around everything. Father was no longer the Alpha? How could it be? I couldn’t wrap my bead around it. My first reaction was to call Cynthia to ask what was going on, but then an image of her face flashed through my mind, wrapped in Derek’s embrace. A lump formed in my throat and I dropped the phone. I had to get to the hospital quickly, I wasn't going to find out anything here I thought, putting the car in drive. Different thoughts swirled in my mind as I drove, each worse than the other. Pack politics was brutal, if Susan was right I had no idea What could've happened but it wasn't good. Father had been the Alpha since I was a little girl, what could've happened? I swallowed hard. I turned on the radio, the silence got too much and almost immediately a female voice came over the speakers, her words made my heart sink. Oh no! “… the feelings of the public towards the recent upheav
Serena’s POV I'd wiped away my tears by the time I walked up the stairs to the hospital, my eyes stung from all the crying I'd done. I took deep breaths as I followed a nurse as she led me to my father’s ward, every step of mine felt as ominous as the empty, sterile corridors. “How's he?” I mustered the courage to ask the nurse, my heart beating erratically. “Is he…” I trailed off, not able to continue. “I can't say, Miss,” the nurse shook her head, her response disappointing me. “You'll have to speak to the Doctor.” I nodded, not asking any more questions. She led me forward a few paces before we took a left and there, straight ahead Susan and Stephanie were standing in front of the ICU. My heart skipped a beat when I saw their dreadful expressions, they wore grim faces as they stared at the closed doors. Stephanie was a replica of her mother, Susan, only a younger one. The sound of my footsteps caught their attention. When they saw me, they shot me disgusted sneers before
Serena’s POV My eyes were still wide with shock as Susan led me into the ward, I barely even flinched at the sight of Father on the hospital bed. The ward was filled with the quiet beeping of hospital equipment as they worked to keep his condition stable. “Father,” my breath hitched in my throat when I met his gaze, and waves of guilt flooded into me. This was all my fault. Father remained silent, his eyes flashed with steel as he stared at me. Stephanie was seated beside him, I felt jealous as I stared at how she was so comfortable with him, their intimacy more than I'd ever had with him. Perhaps that's why Susan had brought such a suggestion I thought, the shock from her words still causing chaos within me. “He doesn't have long,” Susan whispered in a low tone from behind me. Her cold eyes bore holes into me, “You will do as you're told, Serena. They will pay us well if you can have children for him,” I took a sharp intake of breath at her words. This wasn't a request. I s
Serena’s POV My shoulders were sagged as the two men walked me down the hospital corridor, our group attracted a lot of stares when we stepped into the lobby. My breath hitched in my throat at the thought of my impending fate, I still couldn't believe what was happening. Susan wanted me to get married to Darius, and father supported her. An all too familiar ache gripped me as we made our way to my doom. Every part of me kept screaming at me to turn around and run away, but I couldn’t do that. Aside from the two men flanking me, my guilt plagued me, perhaps this was my punishment I thought, wiping my eyes. I couldn’t abandon my family even though they had easily sacrificed me to a man they didn’t even know. I'd brought this upon myself, and now I had to fix it. If getting married to… I broke off, the thoughts too painful to bear. “Uhh,” I coughed as we made our way down the stairs, my cough catching the attention of the man on my right. I felt stupid asking the question I was a
Serena’s POV “I…” My eyes widened at the sight of his eyes, and I nearly jumped in fright. But I quickly noticed something was wrong his eyes… weren't moving at all, they just stared into space. Jeez, I thought he'd woken up for a moment there I thought, and I pressed a hand above my racing heart. I slowly approached him, making all sorts of gestures to catch his attention but like stone, he didn’t move an inch. He remained motionless. A lump formed in my throat as I stared at him, this was the man who I was supposed to get married to? The thought filled me with disbelief, my breaths became shaky and my body trembled with quiet sobs. I couldn't bear to stay in the room any longer, the weight of the situation crashing down on me. I rushed out of the room, tears streaming down my face. I felt like a dagger had been stabbed in my chest, a few hours ago I'd been happily thinking about how I'd get married to Derek. And now? Now I was to marry someone in a vegetable-like state, s
Serena’s POV Derek's words made me stiffen in shock and chills ran down my spine. “You can’t do this, Derek,” a lump formed in my throat and I tried hard to keep my voice level. “Father would kill you, the Crimson pack would never let this go,” I added, hoping to pressure him enough to make him stop. “Rubbish!” Derek scoffed, ignoring my words.” "You belong to me now, Serena," he sneered, his eyes cold and calculating. "You're useful, but your value won't change after a brief spell of pleasure would it?” He burst into laughter. “You…” I blinked rapidly, holding back tears. "I will never belong to you, Derek. I am not a possession to be claimed,” I glared at him. “You're just a coward,” I hissed, glaring at him with as much hate as I could muster. Derek's eyes flashed with anger, I could see a tick in his jaw. "Watch your tongue, Serena,” he held my jaw with a grip so strong I winced in pain. “You either become my mistress or I'll make you wish you were dead.” My stomach twisted i
Derek’s POV Rage filled my chest as I paced back and forth, my mind racing with thoughts on what to do next. I'd sent out spies immediately after Darius had left, to keep an eye on the situation. Within an hour they'd returned. It was all the fault of that bastard spy my eyes narrowed dangerously, he'd been my eye in the Crimson Pack and he'd assured me that their Alpha indeed was disabled. “Disabled my foot,” I raged, I kicked the chair Serena had sat in only hours ago. Boom! It bent out of shape after it crashed into the wall. I exhaled slowly, trying to keep calm. This was just a setback I reminded myself, things weren't out of control, yet. “Alpha,” a voice snapped me out of my thoughts, it was the spies I'd sent. They all stood in a neat file outside the door. “Come in,” I growled. “Tell me everything you found out,” I hissed, plopping into a seat to listen to them. “The Crimson Pack's been closed off, no one goes in or out…. He is Alpha Darius and not some twin or som
The corridor was dark and dim as Derek’s men made their way down to Dylan’s holding cell. They didn't have pleased expressions however, if anything they were confused. Derek’s orders had been clear enough, they just couldn't understand why he wanted them to release Dylan who he'd kept hostage for weeks already. It made little sense. Releasing Dylan, the man they'd once called Alpha felt like a bitter soup being forced down their throat. In Derek’s study earlier, the command had been given with an authority that left no room for argument. His tone had been sharp, his gaze cold as ice.“Release him,” Derek said, his voice as cold as ice. A wave of murmurs spread through the group of men. One of the braver men had hesitated, his brows furrowed in confusion. “But—” he tried to speak up but Derek wasn't having any of it. His fist slammed onto the desk, the impact echoing through the room like a gunshot.“But what?” He snapped, his eyes narrowed dangerously. “Do you intend to question
DariusThe air outside the council felt like freedom as I stepped out, leaving those group of old foggeys behind me. I exhaled slowly, the tension leaving me as my tense shoulders relaxed and thoughts swirled inside my head. I'd not been as relaxed as I'd made myself look. Damn them! I snapped internally, my eyes narrowing. They hadn't cared that Alex had kidnapped Serena, hadn't cared at all. All they cared about were their interests. “Darius!” Agatha’s voice broke through the mess of thoughts in my mind. I hadn’t noticed when she'd walked out after me. I halted mid-stride, my jaw tightening as I turned to face her. “What is it, Mother?” I asked, my tone sharper than I intended. I forced a smile, “won't you join them in their discussion?” I waved my hand, gesturing back at the closed chamber. “No,” Agatha smiled a little. “They already know where I stand on this, there's no need for more formalities.” I felt a warm fuzzy feeling at her words and I smiled. “You need to be more
DariusThe chamber felt colder than usual when I strode in, the sound of my steps echoing as my boots stepped on the freshly polished floors. My eyes were cold and icy as I glanced straight, scanning the group of people in front. Mother was seated at the far end of the room, she sat ramrod straight but I could see the weariness in her eyes. She had borne the weight of the pack for a while now but now, even she seemed rattled. The three elders were present, they sat quietly by the side but one would be unwise to ignore them. Not like I cared much for them I thought, stopping a few meters away. “Mother,” I began, bowing my head. I glanced at the elders for a moment, my eyes staying on that of Elder Mortis for a moment. He was the eldest and outspoken one, his eyes met mine with a piercing glare but he didn’t say a word. Elder Reed as always looked ready to criticize, his lips twisting into a scowl as he glanced at me. Elan, the quietest of the three, sat back with his hands clasp
Serena’s POV The air seemed still with unspoken words and I stared at Jake pleadingly. “Fine,” Jake nodded, relenting. He massaged his brows gently, “I'll take you to him,” he said, “But—” he held up a finger. “Only for a few minutes” he added, his expression serious. “If Darius finds out I let you see him…” He trailed off, shaking his head. “Let’s just say I’ll be lucky if I still have skin on my back.”“I understand,” I nodded quickly, my heart pounding. “Thank you,” I whispered, "I won’t take long, I promise.”Jake didn't answer and his jaw tightened, but he motioned for me to follow. “Leave,” he turned to glance at the guards who stood further off, then nodded and turned to leave without a word. He probably didn't want anyone knowing what we were going to do I thought, watching the guards leave. “Let's go,” Jake waited until they'd left before he motioned me to follow him. We walked into one of the adjourning buildings, and through some dimly lit halls in silence, the atmosph
Serena’s POV I was deep in my thoughts when a knock at the door pierced the silence. I glanced up, surprised, as Susan stepped into the room. Her movements were slow and quiet as she drifted into the room, her gaze shifting nervously before settling on me.“Susan?” my eyes narrowed slightly. I was surprised to see her, and a moment later I frowned. There was something off about her I thought, wondering if my eyes were playing tricks on me. Her usual air of superiority was gone, replaced by something I couldn’t quite place.“Serena,” she began, her tone softer than I’d ever heard it.I straightened, sitting up while adjusting a pillow behind me, despite myself I was still wary of her. “What is it?”Susan hesitated, her hands twisting together. “I came to see how you were doing,” she beamed a smile at me as she fidgeted on the spot, unsure of whether to come close or stay where she was. “See me?”My brows shot up as her words threw me off, that was the last thing I'd expect Susan to
Serena’s POV The room was so silent you could hear a pin drop. Darius stood near the door, his arms crossed and I could feel his eyes on me, boring into me. “Th—thank you,” I stammered, my voice coming out in a whisper and I forced myself to look up at him. My chest tightened as his eyes flicked to mine, holding them for a moment too long before glancing away.He didn’t respond immediately. Instead, he shifted on his feet, looking oddly uncomfortable—almost hesitant, as if he wasn’t sure how to respond.“Are you…okay?” he asked finally, his voice gruff but softer than I expected.“I’m fine,” I said quickly, the words feeling hollow in my mouth. Darius nodded, though the tension in his posture didn’t ease. The silence stretched again, awkward and heavy, until I couldn’t take it anymore.“I mean it, Darius,” I stuttered, my voice a little firmer now. “Thank you for saving me. If it weren’t for you…”I trailed off, not finishing the statement. Alex had wanted to take me somewhere. So
Serena’s POVThe sound of the car was the only sound that filled my ears as we drove in the dark. My heart was beating erratically, a by-product of the tense thoughts floating In my mind. Darius was at the wheel, and his hands were gripping the steering very tightly as he drove, his expression was like stone. He hadn't said a word since we'd left, his eyes occasionally meeting my gaze in the rearview mirror. Marcella sat quietly beside me in the back seat, her presence reassured me. This wasn’t fake. This wasn’t a lie, I'd been rescued. I winced slightly as I adjusted my position, my body screaming with pain. I couldn’t get the image of Alex out of my head. ‘Was he fine, had Darius injured him? What had happened?’ I sat there struggling with the thought as it plagued me. I needed to know if he was okay if he’d made it out alive, but I didn’t know how to ask. My throat felt tight, I didn't wish to test Darius’s reaction by asking, so I couldn’t bring myself to speak.“He’ll be fi
Susan stood behind the door as she strained her ears to eavesdrop on a conversation with someone on the phone. She couldn't hear the voice on the other end, but the tone of Stephanie’s words made her feel very uneasy. Something was off. “…it’s handled, don’t worry about that,” Stephanie said quietly, pacing the room. She was dressed in a beautiful blue dress. “If you keep your side of the bargain, keep mine,” her words made Susan scrunch her face, suspicion filling her. “I’ll keep you updated,” Stephanie said. “Stick to the plan,” she ended the call. Plan? What plan? Susan’s brows furrowed and she pushed closer, trying to overhear more bits of the conversation but the conversation had ended already. Susan hesitated at the door, her face having all kinds of emotions. She took a deep breath before she pushed the door open and stepped inside. “Who's—” Stephanie exclaimed as she spun around, her words cutting off when she saw Susan and her expression hardened instantly.“Who were
Serena’s POV The sight of Darius in the doorway sent a flood of emotions through me and my breath caught in my throat. Relief and shock flooded my system, the adrenaline that had been keeping me upright suddenly abandoning me. My knees buckled, and before I could hit the ground, Marcella appeared beside me, her arms steadying me.“It’s okay,” she whispered, her hands helping hold me upright. “You’re safe now.”“You lying piece of—” Darius spewed a flurry of insults but he didn’t make a move. His expression was one of unrestrained fury, his gaze locked on Alex like a predator about to strike. The tension in the room was suffocating.“Darius, please,” I managed to choke out, my voice trembling. “Don’t let this get out of hand.” The look in his eyes frightened me, I'd never seen that kind of look in his eyes. Darius didn’t even glance in my direction. His jaw was clenched tight, and his fists were curled at his sides, trembling with barely restrained rage. Before I could blink Dari
