“Ugh.” Rose’s head hurt so much that she would have thought she was hungover from too much alcohol if she didn’t have a massive life crisis going on. “Damn it.” This time the groan was louder, it made her stomach rumble. With squinted eyes and scrunched lips, she rushed out of bed and rattled the knob of a closeby door.
Glad that the door led to a bathroom, she dramatically slid towards the water closet and released the vomit that had been threatening to ruin her throat.
“Ugh. God,” she groaned harder when she peeked at the vomit. It was a result of inadequate feeding over the past few days. Once she threw everything up, her stomach became very empty, and it ached to be fed. But all the throwing up made her weak, she only managed to crawl to the bedroom.
Once at the feet of the bed, she lay down and stared at the bluish ceiling. Then, the tears came back. Silently, they streamed down her face and blurred her sight so much that she did not notice when someone entered the room and stared down at her.
“What are you doing?” Unmistakably, that was the stranger speaking.
She wiped her tears as though that would stop them and paid attention to the man peering at her with his mystical eyes.
“What does it look like?” Her voice was still feeble. Rose hated that because it reminded her of how Richard broke her.
“I doubt crying is a pastime hobby for you.” He exhaled and moved to the edge of the bed. Once seated, he briefly closed his eyes and said, “You are a mess, Rose.”
Annoyed by his art of stating the obvious, she retorted, “How on earth do you know my name? Are you a stalker? Who exactly are you?”
“Are you always so rash in your thinking, Rose?” His calmness humbled her outburst. “That is disappointing.” He looked away from her. “Listen, you need to rest more. Let us talk later.”
“No.” She sat up fast. “I should leave. Thank you for your help so far.”
“Leave?” He was more amused than annoyed. “In this deplorable state? Where do you intend to go? Did you build a life elsewhere that your husband is not aware of? Where do you want to go? Tell me, Rose.”
Despite the softness in his voice, his words insulted her. With gritted teeth, fury settled in her eyes while bitterness bloated her throat.
“That is …. That is none of your business. I will sort out my life as I please.” She stood up after gaining a little strength. “You are a stranger. Nothing else. I appreciate your help, but you don’t get to use that as an opportunity to control me.”
“Control?” He got up as well. For the first time since he stepped into the room, he showed an emotion different from calmness. “You think I am trying to control your life?”
She nodded while struggling to tear her eyes off his lips. “What else is it? Huh?” Rose argued. “Why else would a man I barely know help me? Mister Man, I refuse to be controlled. Do not hold me back.”
“You are very foolish, Rose.”
“What? How dare you insult me?”
“You insulted me first,” he returned.
Rose noticed that despite his hurled words, he was not displaying visible anger. It was weird. “How did I do that?”
“You mocked my intentions, Rose. I am here because you are the one I am meant to love, nothing else.”
“Huh?” Her mind frowned at his statement. “What the heck is that supposed to mean? Love?” That word annoyed her. “Love me? Are you high?”
“Haven’t you felt something since we met?”
‘Oh,’ Rose inwardly exclaimed. She could not deny that she didn’t feel something. She felt a lot that could not be explained.
“When we kissed,” he stepped closer, his scent tickling her nose to its delight, “did you feel nothing, Rose?”
“Huh…” She still could not look him in the eyes. He would be able to tell what was on her mind because her eyes could never tell a lie.
“Tell me, Rose. Tell me you didn’t feel a thing, and I will let you leave right now.” The man’s eyes narrowed with slight agony as if saying it would be hard for him to watch her leave that place.
But Rose was determined not to fall for another Richard scam. Sure, with that man, she felt things that made her believe she could be genuinely happy and at peace. But what if all those were illusions? What if she was trying to lie to herself by thinking that the presence of the man was supposed to heal her pains?
“I did not feel a thing,” she almost choked while saying that.
“What?” Disbelief filled his low voice.
“I did not feel a thing. Even when we kissed.”
“Look at me when you are speaking, Rose.”
She shook her head and continued to look at the bedside drawer in her sight. “I cannot leave my life in another man’s hands. I refuse to do it.” Her legs began to move backwards. “Once again, thank you for everything. I owe you a lot.” She finally got the strength to turn. “Do not follow me. As you said, you will let me leave.” Her eyes pinched close for a second because her soul felt hesitant. But she pushed the emotion away seconds later and walked out of the room, her bare feet feeling the surrounding chilliness she didn’t notice earlier.
As she moved, she noticed that she was in an interesting house that combined modern and rustic architecture in a way that made her want to sit down and stare. However, with no time to spare, she walked past the giant paintings in the large corridor and desperately searched for the front door.
She moved from here to there for many minutes but failed to find the exit. She was almost screaming in frustration when someone appeared in front of her. With his lengthy and shiny black hair resting on his shoulders, the casually dressed man had a physique smaller than her helper, but it was impressive either way. For a brief second, she acknowledged how good he looked in his sweatpants.
“Who are you?” a soft tone demanded as he lifted a tray from the table close to him. “Wait?” His eyes became rabid. “Are you a thief? How on earth did you enter this place?”
Rose found it weird that he was not looking at her, but since the question was clearly directed at her, her hands waved as she replied, “Wh-what? No! Of course not. I-”
“Symon, down,” the man she walked away from entered the scene, his hands pocketed, his eyes fixed on her.
“But-”
“Down.”
“I—” Rose tried to explain why she was still in the house. He cut her short with an embrace. She melted into his chest. With relaxed shoulders and a face that displayed how much peace she felt from that action, every part of her relished his hug, her soul included.
In reaction, the man called Symon gasped, and the tray in his hand fell. But that was not the only reaction to the embrace.
“I fucking knew it!” a voice hollered from behind, and Rose shook, she almost fainted if not for the man hugging her. “You two have been meeting up, haven’t you? So much for a fucking virgin wife! Fuck you two!”
A loud shatter followed, and Rose screamed in fear of Richard’s anger. If the man holding her didn’t immediately lift her into his arms, she would have hid behind him.
Richard picked up a fragment of the vase he broke. “She is mine, you fucking prick!” he screamed, his hand bleeding as he pressed the broken piece into his palm. “Rose is mine!” With increased anger, his body lunged at them, his weapon directed at Rose while the thirst for someone’s blood raged in his eyes.
With irregular, shaky breaths, Rose shielded the man carrying her as much as she could from Richard’s attack, but nothing happened after many seconds passed. Not a single grunt or screech filled the air.Confused, Rose opened her eyes and met the man’s gaze.“Uh…” Just looking at him and being close to him made her entire body react. “Uhm…” She cleared her throat and looked away. Then she noticed that they were no longer in that fine house. Richard and the man named Symon were nowhere to be seen, either. “Huh…” Her frown deepened at the sight of the ocean, whose crashing waves made sounds to relax anyone who cared to listen to it. “Where are we?”“Unmistakably,” he mumbled, his eyes refusing to stop watching her
Rose, for a second, could not believe what she was doing; kissing a man who claimed to be a werewolf. But her insanity did not matter when their kiss filled her soul with a thrill she always thought she would never experience. To avoid ruining that moment, she gently slid her hands into the man’s soft hair and allowed the rest of her body to lean into his sturdy frame while their lips continued to communicate fiercely.“Rose…” Rune groaned when he ended the kiss to her dismay.“Please…” Her brows knitted. “Don’t stop.” She was afraid she would go back to being miserable.“I can do more?” he asked. “Are you sure?”Rose was not a child. She was aware that doing more would lead to her losing her virginity. But, wasn’t it high time that happened? She was not sure what was going to happen to her from that moment on, but one thing she learn
“I love your scent,” he confessed as his lips travelled to the base of her ear. At that point, just his breath was performing and creating arousal in her entire body. With tipped toes, she reached for more of that contact, and the way her breasts pressed against him gave her just what she wanted. “I could breathe you in all day.”His comments reminded her of a tweet about love bombing. The tweet indicated that it could be a red flag, but it seemed she loved this particular ‘red flag’. His words made her heart soar, and she felt good about her body.“Tell me more,” she whispered while her hands worked on unbuttoning his shirt so that she could see more of him. “I want to hear more.”His lips transferred their affection to her face. Within kisses here and there, he placed his hand at the back of her head and said, “I want to kiss every part of you. Especially,” somehow, his other hand cupped h
After rushing to the toilet to pee, Rose took a quick shower. When she stepped out feeling fresh, she noticed her image in the small, oval mirror above the bathroom sink. She stopped and studied it. Her eyes were still weary because of her suffering, yet thanks to the sexual risk she just took, they sparkled a little. Her lips were pinker and sexier, it made her want to kiss the man named Rune a little bit more. Her slight smile turned into a frown when she saw a small mark sitting at the base of her neck. It was not an injury but a purplish mark that seemed to be a symbol. “Uhm… Rune?” she called to the man waiting for her at the entrance. “Is something wrong?” he asked without entering.“What is this mark?”“Oh.” It perplexed her that he knew what she was talking about without seeing it. “A symbol of our bond.”“Wait…” She leaned closer to the mirror and confirmed that she was not imagining the mark, which was starting to look like a tattoo. “You… A symbol? Wait… You were not jo
With his feet running meaninglessly, Rune could not bring himself to think straight for many seconds. When he ended up at the spot where he just watched Rose get sucked into a light, he fell to his knees because the intensity of the scent she left behind reminded him of his failure. However, at the same time, the scent slapped sense into him.He immediately remembered that the light he saw before Rose disappeared was similar to the gateway to Brunia pack- the place he once ruled, where he hoped never to step into. With a frown, Rune got up and questioned the depths of his soul. He wondered which wolf on that side dared to drag Rose into that reeking pack. Of course, he did not find a response. However, he found renewed strength, and with it, he teleported out of that space while his soul searched for the communication link between him and Rose; the very one that allowed him into her fascinating thoughts.[break]“Symon!” The moment Rune’s feet landed in the huge living room of his abo
After spiralling in the light of the space that sucked her in, Rose found herself in darkness that she could not comprehend. Before she could move in that thick shroud of night, she was blindfolded from behind and carried off by strong arms that refused to acknowledge her cries no matter how loud they were. When the sudden journey ended, her ears picked up the sound of keys jangling. Something metallic scrapped the ground, and then she was tossed onto an icy floor, which made her jump.“Wait…” She tried to stop the person that was about to leave her there. “Can I…” Within her distress, she wanted to pick her words wisely. “Can I get water? I am parched.”“No,” replied a gruff voice after seconds of silence. “But…”The door slammed, and Rose was shut up that easily. Her little strength failed her, and she fell to the ground. Within that darkness and confusion, she tried to decipher what was going on; she tried to make sense of the light that sucked her in. The person who brought her
Rune’s trail of Rose’s scent ended up in front of the great castle of the pack. While he was unsure how to process the possibility that someone he knew had captured Rose for whatever reason, Rune’s heart squeezed at the sight of the place that was his home and seat of reign for many years. If someone had told him a year ago that he would lose all that he had, he would have snapped the person’s neck for spilling lies. But there he was… A branded rogue about to sneak into a castle where death could easily find him. As asserted earlier, he had a mission. So, he covered his face with the scarf he tied to the belt of his trousers and slithered into the secret entrance he discovered years ago. It was through that entrance he got to escape from overwhelming pack issues, it was that entrance that allowed him to taste some freedom. Rune was grateful that he ‘rebelled’ in such a way back then. If not, his regret would have been deeper the moment he learned that he played into the hands of wo
Trigger Warning: Imagery related to assault (sexual)Rose tried to sleep, but she could not find a shred of slumber in her soul. Maybe that was for the best. Going to sleep in that alien, dangerous place would do her no good since she was not a light sleeper. However, sitting still in that thick darkness was not any better. She tried to ignore it, but she could feel herself losing her mind because the more she sat there, the more the demons she had been trying to run away from came to haunt her; Richard especially. The wickedness in his eyes snarked, the poison of his words pierced her heart and the heaviness of the silence he subjected her to made her head ache so much that she started to cry. She spent many minutes in that hell. So, when the sound of the door opening reached her, she quickly escaped from the mental hell and with the hope that somehow, Rune was the one opening the door, she waited for the next move. (Well, Rune or not, once the chance to escape that place provides
“This is insane,” Symon broke the silence in the room after plating everyone's food. “I am not comfortable with this.” His eyes were intently fixed on Catherine. He never liked her when she was Rune's Luna, she seemed dubious and too obvious about her feelings, which she knew would never be reciprocated. “I gave Rune a choice,” she replied. “Blame him.”Symon’s dislike grew. “Aren't you ashamed? This is not a setup that will make you happy. Are you that desperate to hurt yourself? Do you love it when others see you in pain?”“Since when did you become a Healer? What makes you think I am in pain?”“I-”“Let us eat,” Rune ordered, and Symon paused his intention to chase the woman out of their abode. Minutes were spent eating in silence. Despite the quietness, Symon found the scene dear since he had spent many days without seeing Alpha Rune. While watching the Alpha focus on the human, he checked to see if Rune was eating well. Once satisfied by how much Rune had eaten, he returned to
“What took you so long?” Symon firmly questioned the duo after they arrived. After Rune's suspicion of someone watching them, he did a quick sweep of the environment. He did not find anyone lurking, but his suspicion did not cease. However, he focused on their journey ahead, and while he made sure Rose did not feel afraid, he transformed into his wolf- a mighty beast with a brown-white mane. Rose enjoyed the ride and somehow felt more connected with Rune. Perhaps that was because she could feel the carefulness he and his wolf put into transporting them despite the high speed. “We left five minutes after you,” Rune said to Symon. “Don't be silly.”On the other hand, while staring at the greenery ahead, Rose imagined how fun it would be to go on another ride with his wolf. “You should have left earlier. We have a little problem.” Symon sure had a knack for speaking in a zig-zag manner. “What little problem?”Rose tuned out her thoughts and focused on the conversation after glancin
“We have done nothing wrong. We-”“Alpha Rune,” Symon interrupted, “that does not matter to these humans. They are keen on-” Loud noise from a helicopter deafened them. “We need to leave!” Symon concluded. Rose, on the other hand, wiped her face clean and stood up. “Leave to where?” Rune probed. “This is the only home we have.”“I don’t… I don’t know either! Okay! I don’t know!”Rose chose to voice the escape route she had thought about. “Let us…” She cleared her throat. “Let us go to the Brunia Pack.”“Rose.” Rune frowned. “We cannot go back there. The enemies there are worse.”“The enemies in this place will separate us. If I dare to reason why they have chosen to create lies against you, it must be because they know your true identity. Why else would they go through so much trouble?”“That is sensible,” Symon supported. “Let us go to the pack, Alpha Rune. I already prepared some bags for emergencies. We don’t need to leave the house to access the pack’s gateway, it is the best es
“H-how come?” Beta Symon stuttered. He ended up sitting because he was not expecting that confession. As his eyes wandered the fineness of the tiles, he became curious about Alpha Rune’s reaction. So he looked up. It was surprising to see the Alpha staring at the woman with curiosity, not perplexity. “Murder?” Alpha Rune asked, his eyes showing a bit of delight. “That is very intriguing.”The woman faced the Alpha, her frown very deep. “Intriguing? I killed people, Rune.”“P-people?!” Symon almost choked on saliva. “Not one. Or two. People? Woman, what exactly are you?”“It happened.”Symon became certain that Rose was a psychopath. How could she say that without remorse? Even as a werewolf with a natural thirst for blood, he never shed the blood of fellow wolves. “Do you not feel sorry for the people who lost their lives?”“Why would I? None of them cared.”“Who are these people? Were they close to you?”“I don’t want to talk about it.” She cleared her throat. “It is in the past. Wh
The beast exploded before it could do anything. Its blood and body parts were scattered all over the floor. When she opened her eyes, Rose noted the shock on Richard’s face. Then, she looked at Rune, who barely moved while protecting her. His sight was fixed on Symon, so she did the same. The rude Beta glared at Richard, who was still perplexed.“Wh-” Richard audibly processed the moment. “What just happened?”“You said your powers were weak,” Rune said to Symon. “Was that a lie?”“Not really. I didn’t want to believe that I still had my powers.” The Beta shrugged. “It turns out I can still explode things.”“Powers?” Richard exhaled hard, his frown deepening as seconds flew past. “What the hell are you guys? How did you murder my beast? She is one of the best from hell.”‘Hell?’ Rose pondered. Why on earth would Richard mention hell? What was he even doing with that kind of animal in the first place? And how, just how, did he manage to enter the house without anyone noticing?Rose lo
Rose was now asleep. After ensuring the heat-padded blanket was keeping the severe chilliness of the night away from her, Rune dimmed the lights in the room and briefly stepped out to converse with Symon. He met the Beta standing not too far from the room. His frown was prominent, his paces were filled with confusion and contemplation. “Shall we have a drink?” Rune walked past the man. “Whiskey or tea?”“Uhm… Tea. You need tea after your long journey.” Symon hurried his steps, and soon, he was in front, leading them to the kitchen. The men sat by the marbled island in the middle of the kitchen while the water for the tea boiled.“She is pregnant with your pup?” Symon voiced the question that was already written on his face. “How did that happen?”“We had sex.”“Right.” Symon crossed his arms. “How else would it happen?”“Have you found potential Doctors?”“I am still scrutinizing my list because I have to consider the current situation.”Rune was already thinking about Rose, he abse
Well?” The Luna Dowager was standing at a far corner, her gaze and poise as impatient as her voice. The healer glanced up after reviewing the report she had just filled in. “Based on my observations, it is possible that she is pregnant.”“She is?” The Dowager jumped while Rose felt as though cold water was poured on her. When she agreed to the Luna Dowager’s threat, she thought it would not hurt to fulfil her lifelong desire to have a complete family while ensuring the safety of her and Rune. But the possibility of being pregnant was starting to sound scary. She hurriedly searched for Rune’s presence, and when she confirmed that he was still next to her, she held out her hand. He received it and tried to assure her unspoken by caressing her hand.“She has to come to the clinic to confirm it. But there is a little problem.” The healer was approaching a path that easily increased Rose’s fear. “Problem? What is that?”“If she is indeed pregnant, it could pose a danger to her health. S
With a heart racing out of excitement, Rune put on his clothes. He was buttoning his shirt when Rose came to him and helped him with it. His gaze fell on her roughened hair, and he wondered what his mother was thinking. She had no right to send ambushers to inject him with an Eroject, especially when she knew that it was not something he had used before. Grateful that the substance did not halt his heart or something, Rune secretly loved that he got a chance to sexually connect with Rose.He had been loving their conversations; the seriousness and jokes embedded. But since the deal with his mother, he became worried that Rose would not enjoy sex with him as she should because of the pressure to stay alive. He was also concerned that her mind would bother her with the memory of the men who tried to harm her. A soft smile lit his eyes because his concerns were put to shame. “What are you thinking?” she asked, her tender touch patting his chest. “Nothing much.” Rune adjusted her point
“I noticed you have not been bleeding,” Rose pointed out when they reached the dark path leading to their secluded house. “Did the Luna Dowager give you a fix?”“Yes. She had no choice. She badly wants an heir.”“That woman is crazy.” “Tell me something I don’t know,” Rune mumbled. “I don’t know how I lived with her.”“You probably didn’t have a choice.”“You know,” he turned very serious, “it never made sense to me that I had to put up with her. Whenever a council member saw that I was fed up with her, they always advised me to endure. I should have cut ties with her instead of listening to them. If I had done that, we would not be struggling to leave the pack right now.”Rose could not fully relate to him, but the pain in his voice reached her. She looked at him and said, “It is never easy to cut ties with certain people.”“I am jealous of those who have done it. My mother tires me. And I bet she’s giving my brother hell right now.”“Your brother? The Alpha?” Rose remembered ponder
