With irregular, shaky breaths, Rose shielded the man carrying her as much as she could from Richard’s attack, but nothing happened after many seconds passed. Not a single grunt or screech filled the air.

Confused, Rose opened her eyes and met the man’s gaze.

“Uh…” Just looking at him and being close to him made her entire body react. “Uhm…” She cleared her throat and looked away. Then she noticed that they were no longer in that fine house. Richard and the man named Symon were nowhere to be seen, either. “Huh…” Her frown deepened at the sight of the ocean, whose crashing waves made sounds to relax anyone who cared to listen to it. “Where are we?”

“Unmistakably,” he mumbled, his eyes refusing to stop watching her no matter how much she tried to evade his, “you are my mate, Rose.” He gently pressed into her thigh, and a particular fiery burst in her vagina, she became aroused.

Further confused by the dynamic of that moment, she forced herself out of his grasp.

“Okay…” She laughed madly after confirming that they were indeed on a tranquil beach. “Fine. We were at that house, now we are here. Richard was there, but he is not here.” Her hands gestured like crazy while her lips grinned. “And…. you…” She turned to the man. “You…”

“Rune.” His fine voice replied as he pocketed his hands (for real, every time he did that, he always became an irresistible work of art).

“Huh?”

“Rune. My name.”

“Rune? Or Ruin?” Whichever one it was, Rose thought his name was unusual.

“Rune.”

“Ahh,” she gasped with amusement, nodding as if she totally understood the situation, “I see.” Her brows jerked. “Mr. Rune, please,” her hands clasped in front of her, “can you explain what is happening? Why are we here? And what on earth is that mate thing you said? Wait, is this some sort of prank? Are you trying to mess with me?” Her confusion became lethal as she became ready to throw some punches. “If you try shit, Mr. Rune, I will-”

“Where was this energy when that man was trying to overpower you?”

“I…” Her voice cracked, and she resumed finding the man annoying. “You are too harsh, Mr. Rune.”

“No. I am truthful. And you…” He stepped closer and held her fisted hands. “You need to rest.” Tenderness rested in his eyes, and she listened to him.

After a deep exhale, she settled on the sandy ground, and he sat beside her.

Her eyes fixed on the ocean as she whispered, “None of this makes sense.”

“It would be weird if it did.”

She glanced at him. “How and why am I your mate? How and why are we in this place?”

“You are my mate because we are destined to be. We are in this place because I brought you here. I don’t know how your husband found my house, but I was not going to wait for him to harm you again.”

That explained nothing.

Rose scoffed and buried her feet in the smoothness of the ground. “Rune,” she called.

He responded with a heavy, “Oh,” and placed his hands on his chest.

Rose almost shifted closer in concern. “Is something wrong? Is your heart in pain?”

Rune lifted his head. “My heart is not in pain. It is alive. The way you just called my name… oh my goodness…” His eyes sparkled. “It made my heart beat so good.” Rose was taken aback. “Rose,” he sat straight, “if you are confused, I can show you what I mean by we are mates.”

“Show me how?”

“By loving you and making love to you.”

She choked and coughed hard. Then she laughed, but that crashed when she saw the seriousness in his eyes. “You are not joking,” she said.

A sharp breath, and his head tilted such that his eyes looked at her with every possible ounce of sexiness embedded in them.

“I know you lied about not feeling anything from our kiss. If we do more, you will no longer find it easy to lie about how you feel when you are with me.”

“Y-” She jumped out and started fanning her face. “What sort of nonsense is that? I am married.”

He looked up at her, that sexy look still trying to bring her to her knees.

“Are you?”

“I-” She pinched her eyes. “You are delusional. I can never be with you.”

The smirk Rune wore made her aware that she told another lie. Somewhere in her mind, she was already kissing him, and relishing his touch in every way possible.

‘Ugh…’ Rose groaned in her thoughts. ‘Control, Rose. Control yourself. All you did was kiss this man.’

Rune finally looked away from her. “Before things get hectic, I would like to come clean.”

“About?”

“I am not human.”

How was she supposed to react to that? Rose thought. She then further reasoned that he was trying to joke to lessen the tension of that moment.

“I am not joking.” His response to her thoughts made her jump back, her eyes wide. “Rose,” he returned to looking into her eyes, “I am a werewolf. I used to be the Alpha King of the Brunia pack but was banished a few months ago. Since the day I stepped into Bruania, your country, I battled with severe depression and mourned the things and people I thought I had. That was until  I saw you for the first time.” His gaze lowered, and a graceful smile rested on his lips. “Unfortunately, you were very sad that day. But seeing you made my heart flutter. My dead heart felt things that made it want to live.” Their eyes met again. “You did that, Rose. With that alone, I knew you were my mate.”

After that, Rune said nothing more, causing heavy silence while Rose considered what to say.

With narrowed eyes, she peeked at the man at intervals. She could not believe he just said he was a werewolf, a half man, half beast. And she could not believe that she was not disgusted in the depths of her soul. She was just surprised on the surface level. Maybe that was because she had already dealt with a particular beast that had been pretending to be a human who loved her.

“You are not saying anything, Rose. You keep staring.”

“Uhm…”

“If my truth makes you hate me, I am afraid it does not matter. I will not let go of a chance to have peace in my life. I also want you to grab this chance to experience love and peace.”

“Are you saying your love for me is pure?”

He stood up. This time, he maintained a distance between them. “I don’t know yet. But I know that I will not rest until I learn how to love my mate properly.”

“You keep saying I am your mate.” Her hands clasped behind her, and that moment became very solemn, the seas bore witness to it. “Are you going to love me as some sort of duty?”

“Is there something wrong with loving you because it is my duty? When I do that, would I not realise that I need to love you because I do love you? After we have spent some time together, I am sure it will not be hard for me to realise that. Just standing with you in this place calms me, and I already love that about you.”

Rose’s eyes blinked to the side. The excitement, pride and certainty in his response made her soul desire the love he was describing, but she stopped herself before she could yearn for it some more.

“Do not hold back, Rose,” he gently admonished.

“How are you doing that?” That was the second time he spoke in response to the words in her thoughts.

“I told you, we are mates. My response to your inner thoughts is evidence that proves it.”

“Okay.” She stopped him before he could mess up her mind with his werewolf talks. “I hear you.” She hurried back to considering the affection he was offering her. “I have to think about this.”

“Take all your time, Rose. How about we head inside? It is starting to get chilly.”

She glanced at the house behind them and shook her head. “I have to think about it now. I have too much at stake. My heart especially.”

“Should we kiss again? Maybe that would help with the decision,” he teased, but she took that suggestion seriously. Rune noticed that. “Rose?”

Beyond making a decision to stay and see what a life with Rune would bring, she needed their kiss to distract her bad memories. She needed a new touch to wipe away Richard’s wicked ones.

So, after a deep gulp, she shook her head and said, “Kiss me.”

“Huh?”

“Kiss me again, Rune.”

Rune’s feet rushed in response to her statement. He cupped both sides of her face; his eyes showed how much he wanted her, and the kiss happened, his hunger for her lips still present in the way he kissed her.

“I love your scent,” he confessed as his lips travelled to the base of her ear. At that point, just his breath was performing and creating arousal in her entire body. The tweet indicated that it could be a red flag, but it seemed she loved this particular ‘red flag’. His words made her heart soar, and she felt good about her body.“Tell me more,” she whispered while her hands worked on unbuttoning his shirt so that she could see more of him. “I want to hear more.”His lips transferred their affection to her face. After rushing to the toilet to pee, Rose took a quick shower. When she stepped out feeling fresh, she noticed her image in the small, oval mirror above the bathroom sink. She stopped and studied it. Her eyes were still weary because of her suffering, yet thanks to the sexual risk she just took, they sparkled a little. Her lips were pinker and sexier, it made her want to kiss the man named Rune a little bit more. Her slight smile turned into a frown when she saw a small mark sitting at the base of her neck. It was not an injury but a purplish mark that seemed to be a symbol. “Uhm… Rune?” she called to the man waiting for her at the entrance. “Is something wrong?” he asked without entering.“What is this mark?”“Oh.” It perplexed her that he knew what she was talking about without seeing it. “A symbol of our bond.”“Wait…” She leaned closer to the mirror and confirmed that she was not imagining the mark, which was starting to look like a tattoo. “You… A symbol? Wait… You were not jo

With his feet running meaninglessly, Rune could not bring himself to think straight for many seconds. When he ended up at the spot where he just watched Rose get sucked into a light, he fell to his knees because the intensity of the scent she left behind reminded him of his failure. However, at the same time, the scent slapped sense into him.He immediately remembered that the light he saw before Rose disappeared was similar to the gateway to Brunia pack- the place he once ruled, where he hoped never to step into. With a frown, Rune got up and questioned the depths of his soul. He wondered which wolf on that side dared to drag Rose into that reeking pack. Of course, he did not find a response. However, he found renewed strength, and with it, he teleported out of that space while his soul searched for the communication link between him and Rose; the very one that allowed him into her fascinating thoughts.[break]“Symon!” The moment Rune’s feet landed in the huge living room of his abod

After spiralling in the light of the space that sucked her in, Rose found herself in darkness that she could not comprehend. Before she could move in that thick shroud of night, she was blindfolded from behind and carried off by strong arms that refused to acknowledge her cries no matter how loud they were. When the sudden journey ended, her ears picked up the sound of keys jangling. Something metallic scrapped the ground, and then she was tossed onto an icy floor, which made her jump.“Wait…” She tried to stop the person that was about to leave her there. “Can I…” Within her distress, she wanted to pick her words wisely. “Can I get water? I am parched.”“No,” replied a gruff voice after seconds of silence. “But…”The door slammed, and Rose was shut up that easily. Her little strength failed her, and she fell to the ground. Rune’s trail of Rose’s scent ended up in front of the great castle of the pack. While he was unsure how to process the possibility that someone he knew had captured Rose for whatever reason, Rune’s heart squeezed at the sight of the place that was his home and seat of reign for many years. If someone had told him a year ago that he would lose all that he had, he would have snapped the person’s neck for spilling lies. But there he was… A branded rogue about to sneak into a castle where death could easily find him. As asserted earlier, he had a mission. So, he covered his face with the scarf he tied to the belt of his trousers and slithered into the secret entrance he discovered years ago. It was through that entrance he got to escape from overwhelming pack issues, it was that entrance that allowed him to taste some freedom. Rune was grateful that he ‘rebelled’ in such a way back then. If not, his regret would have been deeper the moment he learned that he played into the hands of wo

Rune tried to be strong. He didn’t want to break down while the woman he failed to protect was hurting, but the more her tears pierced his heart, the more that plan collapsed. As he held the back of her head and occasionally patted it to assure her that he was still with her, tears that resonated with his mate’s wails fell. His wolf also felt the sorrow and saddening whimpers stemmed from his soul. Rune knew saying that he was sorry would do no good. It would be stupid of him to say such a fickle statement. So he chose to utter no words. While he made his crying as silent as possible, he listened to the agony in Rose’s voice. He lashed himself repeatedly for failing to find her in time to protect her from the fangs of the men that were molesting her. “He is still not back?” Symon’s worry was now very uncontrollable. It had been two days since Alpha Rune left to search for Rose. The Beta found it worrisome that Rune did not return with or without Rose, so he went out to find him. But hours of searching yielded no result, and his desire to find Rune waiting in the hideout was instantly crushed when he got there. “We have searched everywhere. We even sent some of our wolves to spy on the castle, but nothing has come out of it. What if something terrible happened?” Omega Keith could not hide his anguish. “I don’t want to think the worst,” answered Symon, his eyes tightly shut to help him endure the brewing terror in his soul. “I don't want to.”“But, his curse. Beta Symon, that curse is merciless. What if he is stuck somewhere, lying unconscious? We have to-” Keith slapped his thigh. He could not hide his anguish. “Where else can we search? What else can we do to find him?”Symon sighed as he sat to relieve the ache in his feet. “Th

Her mouth gaped, she glared at the evil standing before her, and she cursed the day she met Richard in her mind. Then, she started to wonder if she had always been blind to his true nature. She should have suspected that he was not purely human the day he came to Rune’s house with a rabid, unworldly beast. She should have linked his obsession to find and destroy her to something supernaturally wicked.“Don’t sweat it, Rosie,” Richard said, his dark eyes and terrible smell returning to where they came from. “No matter how you beat yourself up, you will find out that there was no way you could have known my true nature. He struggled with sorting out his thoughts. “Uh… do you remember the way?”The Beta relieved Rune of the burden of holding Keith. “The hideout is not too far from here. “I did it,” Christopher tried to tame his excitement as he walked into the multinational-standard laboratory his government had been secretly equipping. “I actually did it.” He glanced at the three he-wolves strapped to the stretchers. “Professor, how do we keep Rune alive?”The professor, a middle-aged man maddened by science and technology, swirled his chair to face Christopher. “Pres, you are here. Liquid is in prep right now.”Christopher rushed a breath out of his soul. The professor’s lingo was always changing, the only constant was how difficult it was to understand him. “Liquid? What liquid?”“The liquid to keep him alive. The bullets didn’t do a lot of damage to the tough guy, but these belts are slowly sucking out his energy. Since the belts are the only way we can hold him down, we cannot loosen them. We need him to be in the best shape, don’t we? President Christopher was frightened by how much Kate’s plan worked out. The whole thing was too seamless. Based on her instructions, they found their helper, a woman named Natasha, who led them to the place where Rune and Rose were. As discussed, at the right time, Rose was separated from others per the desire of her wicked husband. As for Rune, who was unexpectedly not conscious, Christopher and his secret agents simply followed the men who pushed Rune’s carriage into the gateway. As Christopher’s little group walked through the light, he found the space weird. His heart could not rest easy; his palms itched, and his legs ached to leave. For a second, he thought he would die, but they thankfully reached Bruania before that could happen.“Sir, should we arrest them now?” One of his agents asked with a whisper. After multiple exhales, Christopher stood upright and watched as the men ahead of them glanced behind. They all ducked behind the truck shielding them and waited for the man

She looked away for some seconds, closed her eyes and wished they could disappear from the pack at that very moment. “Rune…” She looked at him again. “We are going back to Bruania. If staying there does not work, we will relocate to another country.” After a heart-crushing sigh, she kissed his forehead to remind him again that she was still with him. When Rose saw what had come out of Rune, she hurriedly grabbed him because she was afraid that he would succumb and stop existing the next second. With her firm hold and tight frown, she supported Rune, who was murmuring about how he was fine while wiping blood off his lips. “Natasha! With her feeble strength, she walked Rune out of that room. She did not let go of him until Natasha appeared and hurried them into a nearby room so that he could lie down.
