I continued to gasp for air, but the middle aged man only stared blankly at me. I couldn't even tell what he would do next.

Slowly, the corner of his lips formed a small smile. A smile that was almost like a smirk. And then, he released his grip against my arm.

"Hi, Miss?" He stepped backwards, putting his hands into the pocket of his trousers.

My eyes were still widened, fear swaying through me. I was particularly dreaded because of the way mom had cried over the phone. What made her do that?

"Who're you? What do you want?" I demanded.

He chuckled, and muttered something I wasn't sure I had heard. Something like “mother-daughter”.

"You haven't answered me yet." I managed to remain dauntless, trying as hard as possible to catch my breath.

He smiled. But, although his smile looked real, I felt it was fake.

"You dropped this." He wiggled something. Moving my eyes to it, I gasped on seeing my necklace. Well, thank goodness it wasn't the one I always wore. It was a different necklace. But why was I always losing a necklace?

"Oh. Thanks." I quickly took it from him, and wore it around my neck.

Looking back at him, I felt so uncomfortable with the way he looked at me. It was as if he was scrutinizing me, as if he wanted to ask or say something. Who was this man?

He sighed. "It's not so good for ladies to walk alone by this time of the night. It's risky."

Easy for him to say, I thought.

Obviously, he was rich. So, that was probably a reason he didn't know what it meant to be in serious need of money.

"Thanks for your advice," I appreciated it, ready to end this conversation. I knew nothing about him, so I couldn't trust him.

"Anyways…" he pulled his hand from his pocket, stretched it forward. "I'm Scott."

After a little hesitation, I took his hand. "Renee," I said.

"I work at different places. This area is one of them," he announced. Absolutely, I wasn't interested in where he worked or where he didn't work. I just had to go home to study.

"Good." My wide smile was so, so fake. It was as if a machine was controlling the nuts in my head, programming me to smile.

"So…" he returned his hand to his pocket. "I hope to see you around, Renee." He looked down, let out a throaty chuckle. "Also, don't forget to take your phone. Bye."

With that, he walked past me, leaving my proximity.

Brushing my fingers into my hair, I exhaled. This was so scary. First, mom had been so tense. And now, this man seemed quite suspicious. Or wait, did mom know him? Why had she asked me to run?

Confused and anxious, I bent down to take my phone. "Oh, shit," I murmured when I spotted a crack on its screen. Where would I get the money to get a new phone, if this one had to get spoiled?

Standing up straight, I half ran and half walked, until I got out of this silent place.

"It's nothing!" Barb whined at Bella, as they both discussed something. I rolled my eyes, wondering when Barb would stop acting childish. To be honest, I only started to discover how unserious my friends were. They didn't even care about the test we had.

"Guys, please." I slammed my textbook against the desk in front of me, glared at them. "You guys aren't even studying at all."

"Woah, what?" Barb squeezed her face. "When did you start to act like Virg?"

"Stop, please. I'm trying to study here. Do you want me to leave?"

"Whatever." Bella scoffed. "Just get your ass off here. We wouldn't stop talking because of you."

I grumbled, pulled my chair backwards, and stood up straight. Taking my book and backpack from the desk, I turned to leave. And, that was when I had to encounter this moron again, Amy.

"Are you always this careless?" There was a smirk on her lips, her arms tucked around her chest.

I sighed. "I'm sorry for bumping into you. But please, leave my way. I don't wanna cause a commotion here."

Uh-oh. Speaking of commotion, I guessed I wouldn't be the one doing that. It'd be Bella. But well, if Amy wouldn't have to say something stupid, I didn't think Bella would care about her.

"Keep that warning to yourself," Amy retorted. Her smirk grew wider, and there was an expression on her face I couldn't grasp. "I'm not here for you, Renee. I'm here for that bitch."

I narrowed my eyes at her. "What?"

She sniggered, and walked past me. I turned around, only for me to see her standing close to Bella's seat. Bella looked up at her, scoffed, then returned to fake-studying. Jeez, what was going on?

"Hey." Amy poked Bella's arm, that don't-ignore-me look on Amy's facial expression.

"Are you crazy?" Bella slammed her palm against the desk, stood up. Just that one slam, caught everyone's attention. They began to stand up from their seats, gathering around us. I didn't like this at all.

Amy scorned at her. "You had better not make me angrier than I already am. You've done enough. For goodness sake, when are you gonna accept the fact that Jason is no longer yours?"

Bella lowered her head. I could tell she was trying as much as possible to remain calm. And one thing I knew was, if Amy thought she was crazy, Bella was the crazier one.

I curled up my fingers in a fist, put my eyes down. To be honest, if this Amy had to cross her limits, I'd end up teaching her a lesson.

I tried holding back my tears, and stared up at her. "What do you want?"

"I'm pretty sure you're the reason for our breakup," she stated, wrath thick in her eyes.

I swallowed my tears, and wore a stern look. "If you don't have anything to say, just shut your ugly lips. You're seriously gonna get on my nerves."

"You're already on my nerves," she retorted. "Jason came to me. He's mine already. Fine, you guys dated for a while, but that's in the past. Can't you just forget about him? Why are you making my life miserable?"

"Making your life miserable?" I dropped my hands on my waist, squinted my eyes at her. "You took him, but I did nothing. It was so embarrassing and painful for me, but I ignored it."

She snorted, wrinkled her face like she was disgusted. What an idiot. "I care less about that. That's in the past. I can—"

"Get this straight." I pointed a finger at her, glared with so much intensity. "If you try to embarrass me further, or do anything crazy, I won't spare you this time around. I've had enough from Jason and you."

"I also—"

"Good. Night." I cut her off, grabbed my backpack, turned around to leave.

Walking to the door, ignoring the crowd eyes which were on me, tears welled in my eyes. Jason was someone I never wanted to see, or never wanted to think about. Although I clearly still had feelings for him, that didn't mean I wanted him in any way.

Jerking the door open, I bumped into someone. And, that person had to be Jason. As usual, he had that innocent look on his face.

Seeing him made tears leave my eyes. It reminded me of the time we had shared a bond. It reminded me of how he had broken my heart. It reminded me of everything.

"Bella?" His voice was low and deep, almost sounding like a whisper.

I blinked so much to hold my tears, but that didn't work. I only ended up bursting out in tears. And, in order to keep it low, I covered my mouth with my palm, wept in it.

"What's wrong?" He stepped closer, attempted to hold my arm, his eyes holding some sadness. Fake sadness.

"I hate you," I declared, ran past him.

As I walked down the hallway, he called my name, but I ignored him. He was clearly my pain, so answering him would only make me bitter. And what was the point in looking back at my pain?

Renee______I stared at Bella as she laid on her bed, weeping. To be honest, I hated to see her this way. If I had known she would see Jason today, I wouldn't have gone to the library with her. Since we had returned from school, she wasn't talking to anyone, doing anything."Gosh, this makes me sick," Barb murmured. Turning to her, I just sighed."Me too," I affirmed. "I'm so surprised to see her this way. I thought she had completely forgotten about him."She nodded, pulling a sad look. "I know, right? But what can we do? Don't you think we should talk to her now?""It's not like she'll listen," I said.Virginia scooted closer to Barb, smiled at me. Since I was sitting on Virg's bed, opposite to them, I could see them clearly."You know what? I think Renee's more experienced in things like this." She poked

A week had passed since I had seen Sean kiss that lady. Yep, I'd admit, I still wasn't fully able to get it off my mind. But seriously, was it my fault? Sean was the first guy I'd ever fall in love with, and the one I still kind of liked. Getting him off my mind was an absolutely huge task.Well, Roy on the other hand, had been coming to me frequently. After he had told me he felt something for me, I really wasn't getting myself. Even though he was being as calm and nice as possible, I had a strong feeling he was fake. That was how famous guys behaved. They just liked to use a lady, and dump her."Will you be attending the dance?" Bella stood up from her bed, walked to the wardrobe."You know I don't like parties. That's definitely not my thing," I told her the truth. Tugging a pillow to my chest, I sighed hard. To be honest, I would have considered going to that dance if Sean had to come with me.

I lowered my head, bit my lip, feeling so embarrassed. Fine, Roy and I had grown close in the last few weeks, he came here often, we chatted a lot more. But did that mean he should come here without telling me?This was so embarrassing.Rolling my fingers into a fist, I raised my neck to look at them. Barb had a crazy smile on her lips, and she winked at me. The moment I looked away, my eyes caught Virg standing by the threshold of the door which led to the corridor."Oh. I forgot to tell you that I poked you because I saw Roy coming," she uttered. Saying that, she walked back in.What was wrong with my friends?"You know what?" Barb smirked. She leaned forward, pinched my cheek. "Maybe we should leave you both. Bella and I need to catch up with something.""True," Bella affirmed, and winked too.I shoo

Okay, this was getting too annoying for me. I wasn't the type of lady who appreciated guys so much, so why the heck would they both be angry just because they wanted to go on a date with me? Was I Amy Walter, or Kathleen Carl? What was going on?"Yeah." Roy stepped closer to Sean, and that made me step backwards. Now, they were both gazing at each other. And since they were about the same height, they seemed like some wrestlers who were in the ring.Sean sighed. I could tell he was getting flustered. One thing I knew about him was, he never liked anyone to get on his nerves. When we had been dating, I had never dared to go to him when his mood was unstable. I would say he was short tempered. So, what if Roy was short tempered as well? That meant this was a war between two Goliaths. Absolutely. Crazy."Hey, guys." I gauged an anxious laughter, stood in between them. First, I tu

"Just ask Bella to do it!" I whined at Barb over the phone. I had only left my dorm about an hour and thirty minutes ago, but she had called about five hundred times already. She was complaining about Virginia not wanting to cook breakfast. How was that even my problem?!"Oh, so you're supporting Virg? Seriously?!" She cried.I slapped my palm against my forehead, sighed hard. "Jeez, girl, you could be annoying sometimes. I'm only giving my opinion. You can't keep calling me for little things like this. It's quite annoying.""Oh, so now, I'm the annoying one?" She sounded angry."Why can't—""Fine! Just get out. I'll sort it out myself. And till you return, I won't call you," she uttered."Barb, you've got to—""Bye!" And then, she hung up.I rolled my eyes, and stepped into the por

I had never, ever been to a dance party before. Going to the school dance was a big deal to me. I worked at a club, but who would ever know I never paid attention to anything that went on in there? All I did was to serve drinks, think about the next step I'd take in my life, worry about one thing or the other. But this time around, I was gonna be a guest at the dance. I wasn't gonna work there!"What am I gonna wear?" I threw my back into the bed, covered my face with a pillow. "This is awkward. Renee at a party?"I heard Virginia chuckle, and that made me sit up. "It's not funny!" I cried at her, frowning gently. "I mean, what if I end up being embarrassed? And to worsen it all, I'm going on a date with that dude. I'm literally gonna be the talk of the school. A date with Roy? Ah, creepy!""Is it?" Bella scoffed. Turning to her, I noticed how indifferent she looked. "Have you forgotten I once dated Jason? The famous mor

"See you later," I added, and hung up my phone call.Walking to the library, I took in a deep breath, feeling weird. For some reason, these last few days, I was wanting to dress enticing enough for Roy. To be honest, after he had deeply expressed his feelings that night, I wasn't feeling too comfortable around him. When he stared at me, it made me feel like an infatuated teenager. So weird.I took a last glance at my cinched waist top, denim pencil jean trouser, and canvas shoe. Of course, I was pretty.Stepping in, I scanned my eyes through the place in search of Roy. He had told me he would stand close to the door, so where the heck was he now?"Pretty." He startled me when he hit his arm against mine."Naughty boy." I slapped his back, glared up at him.He only chuckled, and took my hand, pulling me somewhere.&nb

After a long stare, I chuckled. He was obviously joking. Sleepover? With a boy?My chuckle turned into a crazy laughter, my arms shaking as a result of it. In fact, I didn't know when I slapped his chest."What a joker you are," I commented."Joker?" He sounded puzzled.I stopped laughing, took a deep sigh before gazing at him. "I didn't know you were this funny. A sleepover?""Um, yep?" He twitched an eyebrow. "Do you think I'm joking? Is that a big deal?""Wait, wait." I lingered my hands in the air, chuckled again. "So, you want a sleepover? I mean, that's crazy.""Not crazy for me." He poked my arm. "I just want us to spend more time together. I miss you all the time."I snorted, and pulled him back to our desk. Ensuring we were both seated, I cleared my throat, scrutinizing him.

Hey guys, I want to appreciate everyone who reads this book. It means a lot to me. Sooooo, I know some of you might not be happy with the end, but I want you to know it's just a story. And wait, remain calm! There's going to be book two. This is more like a prequel, an introduction to their love story. Book two is titled: Chasing her. It'll be out soon. Yes. Soon. You don't wanna miss book two, do you? 🤔 How do you think it'll go when Renee finds out about this? This would be a second heartbreak, right? Or wait, how'll she find out? Roy's a great pretender, you know? And yeah, if Roy could betray her, don't you think there could be more craziness in this story? That's enough of a spoiler, right? Thanks to God for making this book complete, and thanks to everyone who read and supported t

The cool breeze staggered through us, teased my hair, causing goosebumps to rise on the exposed part of my skin. I smiled as I stared up at the sky, so happy. Particularly happy because Roy was with me. He had his arms around my waist from behind, no inch left between us."When will you return?" I asked him, my voice soft.He pecked my ear. "In a week. You'll miss me?""Hmm, maybe."He sighed. "Renee, I'm so glad we're finally going to be happy.""Me too." I sighed."I can't wait for you to graduate. We'll be able to leave here, and start a life together," he said. That melted my heart. So he also wanted to start a life with me? So nice."Yeah."Dropping another kiss on my ear, he stepped backwards, held my arms, and twirled me around to face him. He looked stre

"Pancake or?" I gave Mom a questioning look, waiting patiently for her to answer my question. She sighed. "Pizza. Just order a pizza.""Good." I grinned at her, rushing to get my phone from the living room. I was particularly happy because I wouldn't have to cook any longer.I logged in to the website of the store I loved to order food from, and ordered a pizza immediately. Done with that, I sauntered back to the kitchen.Stepping in, I sighted mom first. She was glued to her phone, and for some reason, sweat seeped on her forehead. Her eyes were widely open, and she swallowed. She looked tense."Mom?" Hearing my voice, she flinched. She blinked about two hundred times in one second, inhaled hard. "Oh, dear. Have you ordered the pizza?"I nodded, pulling a concerned look. "Mom, what's going on? Why do you see

I watched as Virg packed her stuff, tears in my eyes. Her mom was here to take her home. And, I didn't know when next I would see her. She said she wasn't sure she would survive the cancer, and thinking about that, I was even more fearful. I just couldn't think of losing her."When will the dorms be shut?" She asked, snapped her neck in my direction, smiled at me."Um…" I smiled to ensure she didn't notice the tears in my eyes. "Tomorrow, I think.""That means y'all will be leaving today, right?" She zipped her big box, starting to arrange her bed."Yeah. Barb left yesterday," I informed her."Honey." Mrs. Julio, Virg's mom, ambled into the room. This woman was definitely the youngest mom I had ever seen. Tall, slim, her dark skin so fresh, curvy figure, and her partial grey hair always neatly styled.

The elevator stopped when it reached the floor of Roy's Condo. Stepping out, I headed to the condo. Smiling, I took a glance at the cookie I had made for him. And, raising my neck, that was when I had to bump into someone. I would admit, I was quite clumsy.Ah. Shit. No. Not now. This moron, Kathleen. What the heck was she doing here? She scoffed. "Damn, you again? Whenever I see you, I always feel like starting my day over.""Stupid," I muttered, scoffed as well. "Woman, you think highly of yourself. Funnily enough, you've got a really low standard. A person who can stoop so low as stealing a babe's guy, has no class at all.""Blah blah." She flapped her hand in the air, rounded her eyes like the idiot she was, sneered as well. "Poor you. I'm so sorry for you. Like I'll say, that dude's mine. And it's so sad you're not willing to back off."I sighed in frustration. "

I moved my lips, but said nothing. I was so shocked. How had it happened? How had she gotten to meet a boy? This sounded too crazy to be true."Bella, how did it happen?" I managed to ask.She stopped wailing, put her eyes down, sobbed. "A few weeks ago, I went to the club. I wanted to speak with you, but you weren't there. Your boss said you weren't working that night. And then, I-I saw Jason there.""Jason?" I dropped my mouth. So she slept with that idiot? Really?"Yeah." She rubbed off the tears on her cheek. "He offered to have a drink with me, and I accepted. I didn't want to, but I thought it would be a good way to get rid of the stress I felt.""Oh goodness." Barb slapped her hands against her forehead, probably knowing where Bella was leading her story to.Bella sniffed. "We both got drunk. He drove us to the hotel, and then, we&hel

This bed was comfy, comfy enough for me to have a great sleep. I rolled on it, pulled the blanket over my naked chest, yawned as well. Wait, why was my chest naked?"Oh my gosh!" I sat up straight, gasped. I was on Roy's bed. Naked on his bed.Ah, quite embarrassing.I pulled the blanket up, to cover my chest, ran my fingers through my rough hair. Where was Roy? He wasn't on the bed. Did he go somewhere?Glancing up at the wall clock, I grumbled on seeing it was nine in the morning. First, mom would be so worried. Second, my roomies would be worried. Also, I wasn't supposed to sleep till nine!Heaving a sigh, my eyes caught the shirt I had worn last night. And, that brought a clear memory of how Roy had slipped off the shirt from my body, how he had almost ripped off my underwear, how he had adored my body. He had made my first time so memorable. I wasn't hearing the honking car anymore. Was this death? Was I in heaven? But woah, I was still hearing the barking guys.I pressed my hands against my ears, not wanting to hear anything. I just kept weeping. I just wanted everything to be silent."Are you fine?" That voice was familiar. I knew that person.Slowly I raised my neck to spot whoever had asked me that. And, this instant, I knew a miracle existed. This was a miracle. A big one."Roy!" I jumped from the ground, cuddled him tightly. He dropped a kiss on my forehead, soothed my hair, sighed."Are you okay?" He asked."I'm so scared." I wept on his chest. "I thought they would kill me.""Don't worry." He cupped my jaw, looking so worried. "They won't hurt you any longer. I'm here to help you out."I nodded.

Something hit my eyes. Whatever that was, was hot, disturbing and crazy. It pulled me from my sleep, which was so annoying. I had to sleep. I hadn't slept so well in a long time.A knot kept my hands and legs captive. I tried to move on this bed, but it seemed impossible to. And, what in the world was this bed made of? Rock?As I yawned, my bad breath attacked my nose, which made me scrunch it. And, trying to sit up, I opened my eyes.I gasped. I was scared. I remembered all that had happened last night. My legs and hands were tied. I was sitting on a dusty floor, close to a terribly old sofa. I knew something had been wrong with where I had been sleeping, but I didn't know it was a floor not a bed.The thing that had pulled me from my sleep was the sun that passed through the silky curtain on the small window above my head. Where was this place?
