CHAPTER TWO
Rosalie woke up the next morning with memories of the previous day still in her head. Her lips curved in a smile and she lifted a finger to trace its soft contours as she thought of the Alpha’s lips pressed against them the previous night. She smiled, her mind replaying her passionate moment with Jacqueline. She was going to win his heart, she decided. At least he felt something for her, he had made love to her, hadn’t he? Rosalie was willing to bet that being with her was not the same for him as being with other girls. Humming a tune to herself, she swung her legs off the bed, ready to face the new day. “Glad to see you smiling today Rosalie .” Clara, one of the oldest maids in the house said as she threw open the curtains. Rosalie giggled. “And why shouldn’t I be smiling today, especially after last night –” “Last night!” The older woman’s eyes scanned Rosalie , and then a knowing look came over them. “Did you last night?” Rosalie nodded. Clara let out a sigh of relief. “I’m glad. So maybe you wouldn’t feel so bad about the news I’m about to give you.” “What news?” Rosalie asked, her heart already beating quicker. “The Alpha, he has chosen a mate. He is naming his mate before everyone today.” Rosalie was silent as she felt her heart shatter into a million pieces. Alpha Jacqueline had chosen another female as a mate, Alpha Jacqueline was going to belong to someone else forever. Tears streamed down her eyes, and she did nothing to stop them. Her pleasurable moment with him the previous night seemed nothing but a mere mockery now like the Alpha had merely been taunting her. Showing her what could have been hers but would never be. Rosalie struggled to still her erratic breathing, to take back the heart she had already given, but it was no use. “I have always known you had a crush on Alpha Jacqueline, but I thought you were over him,” Clara chirped nervously. “I thought at least now you’ve made love with another male, you’d forget.” A thought occurred to her “oh no! Please don’t tell me it was the Alpha you made love with the previous night.” Rosalie nodded, and then, she just couldn’t sit still anymore. She dashed off the bed and out of her room. “Where are you going?” Clara questioned frantically. “To the ceremony ground. I want to look into his eyes while he says his vows to another female.” “It wasn’t just any female.” Clara started to say, but then Rosalie was already out of the house in her night dress. “It was his fated mate, he found his fated mate.” She finished in the empty room. Rosalie ran blindly, with the tears streaking down her face to the ceremony ground. She had known where it would hold. The Alpha had once told her that he would like his mating ceremony to be held there, and foolish, naïve she had hoped it would be to her. Rosalie barged into the temple looking unkempt with her hair in disarray, bare feet, and still in her night clothes, at the exact time the presiding officer said “you may now kiss your mate.” She felt her heart wrench out of her chest as Alpha Jacqueline lowered his lips to that of the female in front of him, his new mate, and sealed the ceremony with a passionate kiss. Those arms that had held her so passionately now held another female, his lips kissed another. Did he tease this female also, as he had teased her? Did his mouth mark this female as his? She gave a harsh laugh. Of course, this female was his, and he belonged to the female, he would never belong to her. Had he already chosen his mate the night he held her, the night he took her innocence from her? The entire room full of people turned to stare at her, drawn by the sound of her crazed laughter. Their eyes shot daggers at her, and Rosalie knew what they must all be thinking; that she was mad. Here she was attending a mating ceremony dressed in her night dress, barefoot and with her hair unkempt. Rosalie didn’t blame them if they thought she was mad, but it was the look on Alpha Jacqueline's face that cut deep into her. His handsome face remained expressionless as his stormy grey eyes flickered across her features. There was no recognition in his eyes, he looked as if he had never known her. All their cuddling late last night meant nothing to him, their passionate lovemaking. He was denying her before everyone without even uttering a single word. Rosalie turned and fled. It took a while before she realized the Alpha was following behind, yet she didn’t stop. She was afraid that if she turned to look at him she was going to breakdown, down and that after he was gone, she would be unable to pick the pieces of her life back together. She continued running, out of the ceremony area and into the nearby woods. It occurred to her that Jacqueline was an Alpha, and so had ten times her strength and speed. If he wanted to catch up with her, he would have by now. It was when she rested her back against the nearest tree that he finally caught up. She tried to look him in the eye and curse him for the pain and heartbreak that he had caused her. She had not asked to be followed last night, he had sought her out, had taken advantage of her vulnerability, made love to her and all the while having his chosen mate tucked safely away while he used her for momentary pleasure. Rosalie did nothing to stop the tears that streamed down her eyes, hugging herself as she trembled violently, because even in her tears, her pain, the Alpha did nothing to comfort her. “I tried to warn you last night.” Alpha Jacqueline said simply when she was done crying. “You tried!” Her eyes shot daggers at him. “Yes. I told you I wasn’t what you thought I was Rosalie, you of all people should know me by now, you should know that sex means nothing to me.” Rosalie fought her tears. “Sex means nothing to you.” she repeated dumbly. “Yes. You’ve seen me have sex with countless females. Why did you think you would be any different?” “I don’t know because I…because we…” She was unable to continue as tears once again streamed down her eyes. She shivered slightly. Her nightdress was not suitable at all for the biting cold but it was the cold that wrenched at her heart that hurt the most. Rosalie trembled and let out a sigh of relief as the Alpha finally drew her into his arms. He held her against his chest with one hand, while the other stroked her back gently until her crying ceased and he stopped trembling, but his next words cut to her heart more than anything he had before. “Rosalie.” His voice was soft, gentle like a lover’s caress, he would never be her lover. “I care about you, as a friend. We’ve been friends for so long, haven’t we? But you see this; you and me, it is never going to happen, not again. So you can either accept my new mate as part of my life, my only true love, or you are going to have to stay away from me forever.” Rosalie pulled herself away from his embrace as her vulnerable green eyes searched his stormy grey. His expression seemed unreadable. She drew in a breath and wiped the remainder of her tears against the back of her hand. She was going to stay away from him forever. And one day, just maybe, he would come looking for her, one day, he would want her the way she wanted him now. He would yearn for her, beg her to be a part of his life, beg her to choose him. Only then would he know her true pain, and then, she would have her last laugh. Without another word, she turned and fled to her home. She had already made up her mind, she was leaving the pack. She was not going to stay behind, mooning over an Alpha that did not care about her, that thought nothing of breaking her heart. She was going to find a life elsewhere.CHAPTER THREEAlpha Jacqueline walked into his home, tired from another long day. The pack was suffering, he could feel their pain almost as if it pierced his flesh. The raku was a sickness none of the healers could cure, and yet it sprang up from nowhere and was threatening to destroy his entire pack. And his father! Jacqueline drew in a breath and tried not to think of his father, of how the raku was ravaging the old male, destroying his only family before his very eyes, and yet he could do nothing! He, the most powerful male in the pack, the Alpha! And yet he was helpless against this sickness. The thought of his helplessness annoyed him and drove him to become crueler, more hardened, the thought of Ophelia too.A cold smile curved on his lips as he thought of Ophelia, the female who had been his mate. She had ended up being a conniving whore who had been having an affair with his rival, another Alpha while plotting his downfall. He had even found out that the little male, Daniel w
CHAPTER FOURRosalie turned over as the alarm rang. It was 6;30 am, time to get up and prepare for the day ahead. She stretched, then yawned. Her body had not fully woken up yet.Forcing herself awake, she brushed her teeth hurriedly and began preparing food for her little triplets. Her lips curved in a smile. They were her joy, her all.It had been six years since she ran away from her pack since she last saw their father, the Alpha. For six years, she had struggled to make it in the human world, taking one day at a time, and she had even done well for herself. She had studied, went to college, and got a degree as a medical doctor, and now, she had just recently gotten employed by one of the best hospitals in the country. Her smile grew wider as she twirled around singing her favorite song from when she was little.“Is it morning yet Mommy?” Ricardo, the eldest of her triplets asked, his eyes still clouded with sleep. He went over to his mother and pressed himself against her in the
CHAPTER FIVE.Alpha Jacqueline was recklessly in his chamber. He just received words that his father was at it again, his seizures rose a little bit more than before.Alpha Jacqueline couldn't go to see the old alpha because he was scared of how much worse he could have turned. He could have gone to see his father but was scared of breaking down and lashing out at the healers who were doing close to nothing. Though even without checking, he could guess his father's presence changes. The old alpha, who was strong and handsome before, had turned frail, with weak skin wrinkled and eyes escaping into his head. He was in great pain, and there was no sight of Carl, neither was there Rosalie.Alpha Jacqueline tried to connect with Carl through his mind and finally, he was able to reach him after a lot of trial, "Where are you?" His voice was a mix of worries and coldness."We're almost in the castle, my alpha." Carl's response was very calm."Get here immediately." Alpha Jacqueline commanded
CHAPTER SIX.ROSALIE'S POV.I was shocked to see Jacqueline falling on his feet before me just for me to perform my wonder on his father, but that didn't erase the fact that he treated me like I was a scumbag, whereas, he was the only scumbag in the room. The pain I was feeling around my neck eased, and I got up to my feet, "I'll check what's wrong with the old alpha, but mind you, I'm not doing this for you, I'm doing it for the old man who was very good to me when I was with the pack."Jacqueline got up to his feet, "I don't care about any reason behind your help, just heal him."I glared at him and almost changed my mind, but the old alpha did nothing wrong to me. I couldn't let him die because of the sin of this heir. It was not done that way, so I had to help him.I moved to the bed where the old alpha was lying and saw he was still gasping for breath. I quickly grabbed both his lips, pulled them apart and helped him to breathe by transferring some air into his lungs with my mout
CHAPTER SEVEN.JACQUELINE POV.What is wrong with me? I just kept misbehaving over and all over again in front of Rosalie which I know shouldn't be so. I was giving her a lot of attitude which I wasn't supposed to give to a normal person.I was an alpha, and I knew how to behave in front of both my foes and friends. I knew how to cage my emotions and confuse my enemies.I knew when to draw out my claws and when to keep on a smile. I knew when to talk and when to keep quiet. I knew who was an enemy and who a friend should be.But, why am I losing every single sense I had just because Rosalie is here? Why can't I bolt up all my anger like I always do? Why? What's wrong with me? And as if I was not miserable enough, Jack, my wolf still refused to say a word to me.He was first quiet the day Rosalie stepped her foot out of the pack house when I chose Ophelia over Rosalie, but he learned to accept Ophelia, seeing she was our mate. But when we were betrayed, he wanted Rosalie back to the ca
CHAPTER EIGHT.ROSALIE'S POV."Someone should find me the guards I sent into the woods," I shouted randomly, with my heart clenching in pain as I increased the pressure of my weight on Alpha Cosmos's chest.I was trying everything in my power to revive him, and he was refusing to be revived. Something was wrong with the concoction I made, and I was confused because I used normal ingredients and mixtures.I had gone to the woods to grab more herbs, but upon returning, I was met with a commotion where everyone was prowling, and the words on their lips were that my patients had been poisoned.Judging by their suspicious eyes on me, I knew they were all pointing their fingers at me, whereas I was as astonished as they were."Anyone?!" I repeated, but just like the first question, no one answered me.The healers and the guards with some maids were all standing around in the room, glaring at me, and not moving. That was when I realised that no one went to the woods, and tears weighed up in
CHAPTER NINE.ROSALIE'S POV.I've never imagined myself blurting out a word about my pups in front of Jacqueline before, and to think that I spoke of them being his, not for once.I began to shiver from within and my legs wobbled. I was expecting him to say the next word so that I wouldn't snitch much more than I already had as I formed out what to respond to him with.Like the goddess was by my side, Jacqueline busted into a hilarious laugh, he held his stomach and laughed, then he spoke up, "Who do you think I am? A dumbass?" He laughed more.My astonished eyes went to Carl and saw he was just staring at his alpha with no expression on his face, though I knew he would be wondering about what was wrong with Jacqueline.I faced Jacqueline again, "I don't know what you're talking about." My voice was barely above a whisper."You are just like all those bitches out there who birth a pup who is not mine, and try to force their fatherhood on me. Though I see they're better, you're worse t
CHAPTER TEN.ROSALIE'S POV.My mouth refused to shut up as my eyes remained on Jacqueline who just muttered out the words about my slavery to everyone.'Why so evil?' I wondered, and I wished I could question him about his evil scheme, but I couldn't, not before the pack elders, who were looking so carnivorous. If they were given the chance to deal with me by themselves, I knew they would just shred me apart, but still, I didn't want to accept defeat without any trial."Jacqueline, I..."I meant to talk, but was cut off my words by an unfamiliar voice, "Your suggestion is good, my alpha."It was a feminine voice, and when I turned to check its owner, I saw it was one of the healers, and others were nodding beside her like agamid lizards."Since she is a doctor, and she knows a lot about native medicine, we can use her to create some local medicine that would help the people who are diseased, for the virus as we all know, is not ready to go off from the land." She explained further."D
CHAPTER SIXTY-FIVE.JACQUELINE'S POV.My bond with Rosalie was pulling me forward into Scott's pack house like an invisible thread. My breathing was ragged, my muscles burning from the effort I had made, but I didn’t care.Nothing mattered except getting to her.I shifted back to my human form when her scent got very strong, and I moved closer on foot, leaving my sweat to tick out of all the tiny holes in my body.I sniffled the air and her scent led me to a heavy metal door at the end of a dimly lit corridor. My heart pounded in my chest as I approached, the sounds of muffled voices filtering through the thick steel. I stood by the door and listened, catching the conversation going on in the room so clearly."Tell us Rosalie, is he dead?" The phoenix king's voice demanded, his tone dripping with malice.
CHAPTER SIXTY-FOUR.JACQUELINE'S POV.This was why I was awake from my slumber, it was all for her, Rosalie. I reasoned that she wouldn't be doing so fine in my absence, and I heard each of the words she spoke to me when I was asleep. She told me, "Wake up, Jacqueline, I'm waiting for you."It got me so much ease that I couldn't but want to wake up, and when I woke up, I was alone in a lonely safe room.'What am I doing here?' I thought.I sat down on the bed and thought about it all to see if I could fish out a memory relating to my presence in a room far away from my chamber. It clicked in like rushing water..."Jacqueline, hold on now, I'll heal you....""Jacqueline, why are you not waking up? People will begin to notice your absence....""I think we have to keep him for a
CHAPTER SIXTY-THREE.AUTHOR'S POV.Susan was so uneasy as she moved to the room Carl described to her that she would see Jacqueline. She kept her steps light, her breaths shallow, as she moved purposefully toward Jacqueline’s hidden room. The memory of Carl’s urgent instructions through the mind-link guided her.She had written down the description so that she wouldn't forget about it whenever she was ready to go.Susan rounded a corner and froze when she saw Briana.Briana was standing in her path, her arms crossed and her expression unreadable. It was like Briana was waiting for her.The torchlight Susan was holding onto flickered and fell from her hand, casting ominous shadows across Briana's sharp features.Susan’s heart banged in her ribcage, but she
CHAPTER SIXTY-TWO.ROSALIE'S POV.I woke up in the morning to see myself in Carl's fluffy body. He had shifted to his wolf and he was wrapping himself around me, keeping me away from the cold."Carl," I called him and he replied to me with a low growl. Then he flipped us over, turning to the other side of the room."Hey, Carl." I called him again, tapping him, "Let go, you're suffocating me."He growled again but let me go.I stood up to my feet to stare around the new place we were taken to and saw it was just like the first one. It was equally a cold room. When I was away from Carl's embrace, I felt coldness hitting me, and I rubbed my palms together to generate some heat for myself.I turned to Carl and said, "I hate it here."He grunted in response and kept his posture on the floor, still in h
CHAPTER SIXTY-ONE.ROSALIE’S POVMy heart raced when a voice from nowhere spoke out. I had to put on a fake bravery and force myself to speak. “We mean no harm. We were thrown in here against our will.”I spoke with my eyes everywhere, trying to locate the source of the voice. The voice seemed to consider those little words of mine, the light dimming slightly, but stable. “Your intentions are irrelevant. Only your hearts will decide your fate.” It said to us.The light flared, enveloping us in a blinding glow.I felt a surge of energy, a sensation both foreign and familiar as if the very essence of my soul was being laid bare.Carl groaned beside me, and I reached out, gripping his hand tightly.“Hold on,” I whispered, though I wasn’t sure who I was trying to
CHAPTER SIXTY.ROSALE'S POV.The cold in the icy cold room was unbearable, seeping into my bones as I clung to Carl, who barely managed to stay conscious. My mind raced with desperate thoughts, each one more dangerous than the last. I had to find a way out, but the frost-covered walls loomed like a tomb around us, mocking my efforts.Carl’s shallow breathing filled the silence. "Carl," I called while shaking him back over. His words echoed in my ears when he responded, “I’m fine.” But he wasn’t fine. His body was weakening, and if I didn’t act soon, I might lose him.I know.*What can I do, Rose? We can't die here, can we?* I confined in my wolf.Rose snarled in my mind, with her voice ever sharp. *We can’t stay here. We have to find a way out, Rosalie! We’re stronger than this.*I drew a shaky breath, forcing myself to focus. My eyes scanned the room, searching for anything that might serve as a means of escape with my arms still around Carl. I watched the frost on the walls as
CHAPTER FIFTY-NINE.ROSALIE'S POV.My heart stopped. My breath caught in my throat again. Before I could react, Scott threw his head back and let out a laugh, a chilling, devilish sound that echoed through the corridor like the wail of a tortured soul. His entire demeanour shifted, the mask of sincerity falling away to reveal something far darker than I had been thinking.“What’s so funny?” Carl demanded, stepping forward, his body tense and ready to fight. But I could see he was not stable, his legs were wobbling under him. 'Is he okay?'"I said, what's funny?!" Carl yelled at Scott.Scott’s laughter subsided, but the wicked grin remained. “Oh, you poor fools. Did you think I’d risk everything just to save you? You’re nothing more than pawns in a much larger game.”I felt the blood drain from my face. Rose howled in rage, the truth of her warnings now undeniable. *I knew it!* She exclaimed.I ignored her to focus on Scott.“What do you mean?” I asked him in a shaking voice despite
CHAPTER FIFTY-EIGHT.ROSALIE'S POV.Carl and I followed Scott out of the pack, and when we got outside, we halted before three sleek black cars, which were parked right there with his guards sweeping all around them like ants do to sugar.A door was opened for us, "Enter in." We were commanded.I had lost the zeal to go with Scott. I never knew that he was planning to take us out of the pack. If he does, how then do we take care of Jacqueline?Carl peaked unto my face, "Why are we stopping? Aren't we following him anymore?""I thought going with him was a better idea. I'm sorry."Scott cut into our words and said, "Too late to apologise!"We were pushed into the car, and it zoomed off immediately, with the others coming behind us.'Why am I not thoughtful enough?' I beat myself up, 'I'm stupid! Stupid.'"Hey, hey, stop it. I'll just tell Susan about Jacqueline's location and she will take care of him for the time we will be away." Carl said to me."What if she snitch on us again?""Do
CHAPTER FIFTY-SEVEN.ROSALIE'S POV.The cold floor of the hallway pressed against my footwear as I stumbled forward with Carl and was led forward by the guards who were surrounding us. Lennox was present too, and I had been seeing the demonic smirk he plastered on his face since we left the room.I stared at my hands, which had been bound in front of me to keep me from thinking of running or escaping successfully, which I was so thinking. Beside me, Carl walked with his head held high, his expression defiant despite the bruises forming on his cheek and jaw. He had been hit severally, as per Lennox's order to keep him shut and submissive.Though they didn't succeed in keeping him submissive, they were able to keep his mouth shut.I knew that he would be in a biting pain right now and he was healing ever slowly. He was beaten with silver, for he was just too stubborn, just like Jacqueline. The guards on either side of us shoved us forward disrespectfully when our pace faltered, and th
