I feel terrible lying to Matt. I’m actually surprised by how much it eats at my conscience. Stupid mate bond. It’s almost mid night as I step out of my room. I sneak down the hallway and almost laugh at myself. I’m dressed in black workout clothes and trying to use every ounce of stealth I have to move through the house undetected. I must look like a budget ninja. Novas shift takes awhile. Much longer than a wolf her age should take. I feel bad for her and wish there was something I could do to help her but unfortunately she needs to keep shifting to get over the worst of it. I stretch in bed and risk a glance at the alarm clock. 8.48am. By the time we got back to the pack house it was just after 4am. I snuggle into my pillow for a moment and wonder if I could get away with a few more hours of sleep. I hold my breath as I hear movements behind the door. When Nova leaves I let a breath out. I can’t believe i was actually that stupid. Of course they wouldn’t do anything. It’s almost lunchtime so I head to the kitchen and start throwing some sandwiches together. Leah had pooped out earlier on to pick some things up from the pack centre and Luca was on patrol but I figured one or both of them was bound to be back at some point so I make sure to make enough for everyone. I’m actually excited for this party. I was really worried when I left the Alpha meeting with Alpha Matt , Beta Luca and Nova that I’d be jumping right out of the pan and into the fire. Swapping one prison for another. But they are nothing like Jack , I’m not forced or man handled or beaten. Every day of my life I’d taken being free for granted. I won’t make that mistake again. As the warm air of the heating hits me I take a deep breath. The airport is heaving with people which could make finding this dirty little traitor difficult. Everything hurts. The wolf healing feels slower than usual. Maybe because of all the magic we’ve burnt through tonight. I head to the front yard of the pack house. The pack house is rammed. We’ve made use of all the rooms to set up the pack and make mini infirmaries to treat the wounded. Even as I’m here gathering more towels and dressings to use the death count rises. The last update was 20 minutes ago and we were told 32 members of the pack had died. The territory is being scouted by patrol to look for more survivors and in some cases bring the bodies of the dead back. I grit my teeth as I think off those who died protecting their homes.
