Melanie crosses Kalinin's gates and draws a long, steady breath. Exhilaration combined with a hint of fear permeates the air.
Melanie has only visited here very once since Kalinin relocated with Marcus four years ago but she is resolved to find out where the night will carry her, but the thought of how to navigate her way in this unfamiliar city at night makes her anxious and resolute at the same time. As she leaps into the Uber her sister booked, she gives the driver the club address that Kalinin helped her copy out and she relaxes into the car. Enthralled by the city’s sight, Melanie watches out the window on the trip. Though overwhelming, the pulsating street activity and the brilliant neon lights are thrilling. The thrill of adventure beats her heart, a nice break from her nervousness about the upcoming meeting. When she gets to "The Beats," the club is large and before her, its door is decorated with powerful lettering suggesting an evening to remember. Melanie pays the driver, then crosses the street breathing once more to relax her nervousness. She walks to the door and runs across a fierce security guard whose authoritative presence makes her feel momentarily small. But he lets her in when she says her name. Her name just felt like a key unlocking a new experience. Inside, the atmosphere is incredible. Moving is challenging while the crowd grows and the music blasts all around her. She searches the room for Caleb and notes she arrived early so she then walks towards the bar. The bar is a chic haven among the chaos created by a polished black granite lighted by soothing LED lights. Melanie stops to appreciate all the rich ambiance that rows of brilliant bottles reflect. Perched on a barstool, she pauses to review the menu. “Hello ma'am,” A young barman greets her from across the table, his trained smile raising doubts about his actual enjoyment of working at the bar. Not sure what else to get, Melanie gets a virgin strawberry daiquiri and she smells the evening ahead as the barman masterfully swirls her drink. When the drink comes, she tries it and finds it wonderfully garnished with a fresh strawberry slice. The tastes of sweet and sour provide a comfort from the intensity of the club. She closes her eyes and allows the music to wash her and from across the room, she spots a tall, handsome man with an olive skin tone and Amber-colored eyes staring at her. He smiles and her tummy begins to dance with pleasure. "Is that Caleb?" Trying to fit the fuzzy picture on his dating site to what Caleb looks like in person, she says, trying to retain her cool. She can't get rid of the draw towards the stranger even though she is sipping her drink and should be completely immersed in the surroundings. Though it's an interesting kind of shiver, her spine gets cold from his smile and the brightness of his amber eyes. The music shifts and the gorgeous man wanders among the audience towards her. As Caleb approaches Melanie's heart quickens to introduce herself. Simple banter starts their conversation, and Melanie connects immediately as though they had known one other for much more than a few minutes. Caleb seems rather friendly and truly eager to get to know her and when he asks why she is at the club, she just says she wants a night off. Caleb tells her that he also longed for a break from his routine and for the first time in a long time Melanie feels seen and understood. Lost in discussion on their careers, preferred books, and films, they lose the concept of time as the evening rolls on. Melanie experiences a surge of freedom as their undeniable chemistry is clear-cut. She stops to consider how long it has been since she danced when Caleb suggests they do. Caleb takes her to the dance floor and as the music pulsates around she loses herself in that moment, as enthralled as she is by the glitter in his eyes and the way his body syncs with hers. They laugh and pass playful glances and for a moment the rest of the world vanishes. Melanie feels the heat in the club, so she welcomes it when Caleb suggests that they should grab something to drink. She picks coffee over alcohol, and Caleb offers to take her to his office so she might prepare a cup. She has been wanting to leave the crowded place and thus she enthusiastically welcomes his request. As they exit the nightclub, the clear night air welcomes them differently. Together, they wander around the city and have laid-back light conversation. The streets are full of the sounds of the night, but as they walk side by side there is tranquility. When Caleb reaches a sleek, modern building, she walks past the revolving doors and into a softly sophisticated lobby. Melanie starts to become thrilled as soon as they enter the lift and the doors close. When they arrive at Caleb's workplace, she peers out at the breathtaking skyline, lit. The space is big and friendly; its straightforward design reflects the foyer. Caleb asks her to sit; she settles into a cozy chair and feels calm in the quiet surroundings then he goes to a little kitchenette to make coffee. Melanie waits and absorbs the specifics of Caleb's office pictures of travel and a collection of rare books that testify to his interests and experiences. When he comes bearing two cups of coffee and delivers stories, their conversation deepens and flows naturally. Melanie begins to see a difference in Caleb's demeanor, though. His touches approach her hands and forearms. She finds the bond they have made fascinating, but another part finds the pace at which things are starting to bother her. Just as the air charges with conflict, the security guard that she observed at the entrance earlier, breaks through the door just as she is beginning to get a flutter of anxiety towards Caleb. "Hi, Caleb! Apologies for my interruption," Alistar says, entering the office. “Melanie meet Alistar Roland, my buddy and business partner.”Melanie smiles weakly when Caleb introduces her. “Hi, Al. What's up?" Caleb explores, trying to project indifference. Sensing the tension, Alistar looks from Caleb to Melanie. "We need to go over the Johnson account; I thought I would catch you before the meeting." he clarifies while Melanie's eyes dart back and forth between him and Caleb, not able to wrap around why they are discussing an individual customer account when they are club owners. "I should start being on my way home” Melanie stands snatching at the opportunity. I'll walk you out. Caleb rises, heated in his cheeks. " Don't worry Caleb, I shall address the walk-out duties.” Alistar clears his throat. “You guys can just concentrate on your business, I will see myself out” Melanie insists and in no time Alistair goes straight into briefing Caleb about why he is there. After leaving Caleb's office, Melanie pulls out her phone and opens the Uber app that Kalinin downloaded and helped her set up earlier. She requests a ride, selecting the "Home" destination saved on her profile by her twin sister. Melanie stands outside the office building, taking a deep breath of the evening air. She watches as the Uber driver's estimated arrival time count down on her screen. The driver arrives promptly in a sleek black Honda Civic. Melanie hops into the backseat, exchanging pleasantries with Amir. "Hi, how's your evening?" he asks. "It's been...interesting," Melanie replies, still processing the events at Caleb's office. As the driver navigates through the city’s streets, Melanie gazes out of the window. Lost in thought, she replays Caleb's behavior, Alistar's intervention, and her feelings. "We're here," the driver announces as he pulls up to Kalinin's Estate complex. Melanie thanks him and steps out of the car. She takes a deep breath, feeling relieved to
Melanie wakes up the next morning after a good night's sleep, relaxed. She yawns, reaches for her phone, and stretches. "What should I be doing right now?" Not set any quick trips for the day, she ponders “Rise and shine, sleepy head…it's time for our morning prayer” Kalinin charges her into the chamber. “I am up,” Melanie replies as she hangs her legs over the side of the bed, dressed comfortably. “You have such good morals” Kalinin teases First thing in the morning, they pray together in the living room. Soft music floats around as they claim their regular spots, and as they pray Melanie finds peace. After prayer, Martins takes Kionna to their room to help get started on her morning routine while he leaves Melanie and Kalinin in the living room. “Sweetheart…” Kalinin chimes and Melanie shoots her a suspicious look. “What do you need from me” Melanie goes straight into questioning her because she can tell that her sister wants something from her with the way she is actin
“Hey there, small friend." The man says hello to Kionna who is clinging to Melanie's thigh like her life depends on it. The man chuckles and Melanie beams, her cheeks slightly pink. Melanie didn’t get his name, but she felt the fleeting, dazzling link as they drove apart. Melanie and Kionna had nowhere to sit in the packed restaurant but then her eyes strayed to the table across, where the man she just ran into sat. He seems to be a brilliant, successful man with remarkable confidence and sensitivity in his late 20s. Melanies mind rapidly deduces from their similar eye color that the woman he is sitting with is either his mother or his sugar mommy. The man catches her staring at him and he smiles gently but Melanie's face stays blank. Her eyes narrow slightly and she turns back to Kionna, discounting the man from her attention. An empty spot finally opens up and the man looks across where Melanie and Kionna are standing. Realizing that he won’t be able to forgive himself if
Driven by the vibes that he got from Melanie during their date, Caleb hatches plans to ask Melanie out again as soon as Emma and Alistair leave his office but when Alistair notices how distracted Caleb is, he tells Emma to stop briefing Caleb about the preparations for the next morning’s meeting and that she should come with him to his office because he has something else that he needs her to help him with, just so that he won’t call Caleb out in front of his assistant for being so distracted.Caleb is delighted as Emma and Alistair step out of his office and he fishes out his phone to text his latest catch but when she doesn't reply within one hour, he double-texts her. No reply comes forth after he waits for another 30 minutes, and that makes him groan in frustration. "Did I misread the outcome of the date to think that she is really into me when she is not?" he wonders.Caleb falls into his office chair with fatigue written all over his face. He had hoped that his date with Melan
Melanie pauses to look directly at Ryan because she is also really happy that they ran into each other but she is not ready to own up to it, majorly because she is not willing to put her mind to the possibility of them sharing a potential friendship or relationship, then she will now find out that he is somebody like Caleb. "Ryan, I will see you around." She tells him as she carries Kionna down from his car but her sleeping beauty wakes up, gets down from her hands, and starts walking towards the door. "Definitely." Ryan nods and hands her Kionna’s belongings, before taking his card from his breast pocket and handing it over to her. “Call me if you want us to be friends” he leaves her with the choice before entering his car and zooming off.As Ryan leaves, Melanie finds it difficult to let go of the notion that their spontaneous meeting could signal the start of something special but at the same time she doesn’t want to block his chances before he has the opportunity to prove himse
Two weeks have passed since Melanie's sudden disappearance from Caleb's club and Caleb's concern turns into frustration. He couldn’t try calling her, texting her, and even showing up at her favorite spots because he barely knew anything about he, so with desperation for answers, Caleb hires a private investigator."Jack's Investigations,” the receiver at the other end of the call says as soon as he picks the call."I need your help, Jack," Caleb says, and Jack pauses, waiting for further instructions."I need you to find Melanie Carson." Caleb barks out his order at Jack."Details, please." Jack's tone turns professional and Caleb briefs Jack on Melanie's disappearance."I'll find her," Jack assures.Days pass by and Caleb's anxiety grows then Jack's call comes in."Caleb, I've got something." He informs Caleb.“Melanie Carson has been having quite a lot of dealings with Ryan Blackwood,” Jack informs him. “The investment Brooker?” Caleb asks him confused. “Yes he is,” Jack replies.
Melanie is busy in the kitchen wrapping up dinner preparations with Kalinin after spending the whole Saturday at Ryan’s family house, hanging out with Ryan and also dropping Kionna off for her play date with Aurora, Ryan’s five-year-old niece when her phone suddenly vibrates due to a notification that Melanie assumes is from Ryan, because they had an unfinished discussion, but it turns out that the notification is actually from heartily.me, the dating sight.“What the…?!” she stares at the message, her eyes glued to the screen, as she struggles to process the information.“For what felt like an eternity, I waited on the rooftop terrace for you to arrive with the beef and broccoli stir fry, but you didn’t show up,” Kalinin says as she walks swiftly into the kitchen, picks up the bowl of food before she returns to the rooftop terrace to continue serving dinner. Melanie doesn’t move from the position that she is glued in, her eyes are darting back and forth trying to figure out what cou
Melanie hesitates to give Caleb an answer because she doesn’t know if meeting up with him will be a good idea or not, but she already sort of agreed to meet up with him even though she didn’t exactly say yes, more so she was the one that reached out first so refusing to meet up will not look well on her path, and a part of her wanted closure, as to the real reason why he unmatched her if he was interested in exploring the possibility of a relationship with her.Caleb unmatching with her bruises her ego so bad, and she finds herself pondering about the pros and cons of meeting up with Caleb for the second time. She doesn’t want to discuss anything about Caleb with her sister again because the attitude she gave when she told her about Caleb unmatching her was not welcoming to her at all, so she decides to text Ryan instead because she feels like she will go crazy if she doesn't talk to somebody soon.“I found Caleb’s number on the dating site and I called him after thinking about if I
