On days like this Lauren hated the mornings because she would have to face the fears the day would bring. She turned to face little Harry whose face was pressed into her neck. She watched his tiny form breathe and take in life.
She remembered when she first found out she was pregnant. She had to be angry that the baby growing inside her would remind her of what she had lost, what could have been. But with time she started to love her little bundle of Joy. He was the one that made life bearable for her, he made her life worth living.
Lauren wondered why Nathan never mentioned the baby looking like Damien. The two had been best friends since childhood so he was bound to know where the green eyes and jet-black hair came from.
She felt Nathan stir on his own side of the bed before she felt his hand embrace her and Harry. Lauren was sure they looked like the perfect happy family at the moment. They were far from it.
“What are you thinking off this early in the morning?” he asked, rubbing the spot above her elbow with his eyes still closed and a voice deep with sleep.
She wasn’t sure if she should talk to him about Harry, why it never bothered him that she had his ex-best friend’s child whilst they were married.
“I was just thinking about Harry, you never asked any questions even when he was born and all you could see were green eyes,” she said softly, afraid of what his reaction would be.
He stood up from the bed, the duvet falling from his body to reveal well-sculpted muscles, every part of Nathan was hot, Lauren acknowledged that, but at the end of the day, he wasn’t Damien.
“What do you want me to say?” Nathan asked her as he walked into the closet to grab a t-shirt before entering the bathroom.
Lauren stood up after making sure Harry was still asleep and followed him. “I don’t know, anything. We’ve been married for almost four years and you’ve not mentioned anything. Are you angry that I had him? Are you…”
“I’m mad!” he said, turning to her. “I’m angry that you had a kid for your ex when married to me, is that what you want to hear?” he was almost yelling now, his hands gripping the sink tightly.
“I’m sorry” She whispered.
“You see? That’s why I never said anything because all you’ll be able to do is say sorry” he walked slowly to where she stood “I can’t change what happened no matter how much I want to. So, I’m choosing to not dwell on it and instead focus on us all as a family. I love you, Lauren, I always have, and I won’t let anything ruin what we have”.
He put her forehead to hers, slowly breathing in her scent. At that moment Nathan looked nothing like a man who would cause a breakup for his own benefit. Lauren believed him at that moment that he would never genuinely hurt someone. Not when he loved her like this. If she couldn’t have Damien, Nathan’s love was enough to get her through life.
They stared at each other for a while before Nathan claimed her in a kiss. Slowly ravishing her mouth as he carried her and placed her on the sink. Standing between her legs he tilted her head for better access.
Lauren moaned into his mouth as his hands roamed her body before coming to rest at the curve of her back. He broke the kiss and pulled her nightgown over her head. She felt his gaze roam her body, setting every part of her ablaze with just his eyes.
“You are beautiful,” Nathan said with admiration in his eyes “I don’t know how he ever let go of you but I’m glad he did,” he said before dipping his head and claiming her again. Lauren surrendered her entire body to him as he drove them both into ecstasy before coming down from their all-time high as Harry’s high-pitched cry broke through their moment.
“Is it okay to say I hate babies?” Nathan whispered to her with a lazy smile as they both recovered.
“Not at all,” she said, caressing his jaw “I feel exactly the same right now”. They laughed before entangling themselves, Lauren pulling her gown back on and going to check on Harry. Meanwhile, Nathan ran a hot shower, he was already late for work and he had his beautiful wife to blame.
“Why do you wake up at the strangest times?” Lauren asked with a smile as she cradled Harry in her arms. He smiled as he understood perfectly what she was saying. She put him in his babysit and made him breakfast.
She heard his stomach grumble at the sight of the food “You must have a big appetite this morning” she teased, tickling his sides and making him laugh.
“I’m off for work baby,” Nathan said as he walked into the kitchen, he kissed her forehead and then Harry’s “I’ll be late today, don’t wait up for me” he called out as he left. Lauren watched his car leave the driveway.
Just when she finished feeding Harry and was about to run his bath, she saw a black Audi drive-in. She wasn’t sure who it was, so she carried Harry and placed him on the bed before going to the door.
The knock came just as she reached the door. “Who is it?” She asked and opened the door. Standing there in all his masculine glory was Damien.
“What are you doing here?” She asked, stuttering in the process.
“Good morning?” He said with a smile.
Lauren looked around to make sure Nathan was not around somewhere before letting him in, it wasn’t like she was doing anything wrong. she just knew it would be a disaster if Nathan came back to see Damien in his house.
It was strange watching Damien step into the house that belonged to her and Nathan. His presence immediately dominated the house, him walking in like he owned the entire ground he was walking on.
“Why are you here?” Lauren asked, settling on the chair in the kitchen.
Damien turned his attention to her when he was done looking around the house. “You look good,” he said with a flirty smile and even winked at her. His eyes didn’t leave her which made Lauren look down at what she was wearing.
She immediately crossed her hands over her chest when she realized she was still in her nightgown which was transparent and didn’t hide anything leaving her body for Damien’s consumption, which he was enjoying to the fullest.
“You don’t ever have to hide from me,” he told her, his eyes turning to slits when he saw her reaction.
“It’s not proper anymore,” she said, forcing the words out as Damien’s gaze kept distracting her.
“I’ll be the one to decide that, where is he anyway?” he looked around as if Nathan would just pop out of nowhere.
“Work” she answered.
“Can I see him?” Damien asked, remembering why he was there in the first place and cursing himself out in his head for letting Lauren’s almost exposed body distract him from his mission here. Despite that, he felt his pants stir.
“He’s asleep,” She said, turning defensive. She didn’t like that she was alone with him in the entire house. Nathan shouldn’t have left for work as early as he did.
“Don’t lie to me Lauren, that’s not you” he chastised.
“People change” she stated simply, praying that Harry wouldn’t cry out.
“You promised to grant me a paternity test at the least, satisfy my curiosity,” He said, he was standing right in front of her. Evading her personal space, trusting his masculine scent into her senses. She stood up, unable to bear the closeness and her body’s reaction to it.
“And if the child is really yours, what would you do?” she asked, her heart beating in anticipation of his answer.
“Then I will have what is rightfully mine”
Lauren’s heart broke at that “You will take him away from me?” She asked, her eyes beginning to water with unshed tears.
“I never said that. I will have him and you, where you truly belong- with me” he said with an air of authority that made Lauren know he wasn’t bluffing. Damien was a man that always got whatever he wanted, any means necessary.
Lauren would have been delighted at the idea of Damien fighting for her but after her morning with Nathan, she didn’t want to hurt him. Nathan was her husband and family, and she wasn’t going to betray that.
“I can have my doctor come over here…”
Harry’s cry interrupted her. This was bad timing for her. Meanwhile, Damien’s eyes widened with excitement as Lauren strode past him and into her room. He was tempted to follow but he respected her privacy.
When she came out, carrying Harry in her arms, Damien froze. It was like he was looking at an old picture of himself at a very young age. The baby looked so much like him that it was almost scary. No paternity test was needed, it was as clear as day that Harry was Damien’s child.
“Can I hold him?” he asked quietly.
Lauren gave a quiet Harry to him and watched the awe that was in Damien’s eyes as he held his son. Damien pressed the little boy to himself, inhaling his every scent which was intoxicating to him.
Damien was about to speak but he was choked with emotions, unable to utter a single word. Lauren watched a single tear escape from his eyes.
Meanwhile, Harry looked so calm, looking at his father with the same intensity. And just to the shock of everyone uttered his first word.
“Dada”
Lauren and Damien froze, eyes wide, their wars unbelieving of what they just heard. Lauren held a hand to her mouth to stop herself from crying. Her little Harry finally said it. Since he had started to utter a few intelligible words including Mama, he never was able to call out to Nathan.
They stood there, looking at each other, not knowing what to make of the situation. Damien gave Harry back to Lauren, quickly pulling his posture together.
“He’s a fine young man,” he said and put his hands into his pockets to prevent them from wandering back to his son. “A test then?” He asked
Lauren took a look at Harry and nodded, she didn’t trust herself to speak without breaking down in tears.
“Tea?” she asked when the silence became awkward. He nodded.
“Let me put him back in bed,” She said, carrying a now sleeping Harry inside the room and turning on the child monitor.
Damien wandered around the house, looking out for anything that might pose a danger. He was heading back to the kitchen when something caught his eye. It was a picture of Nathan carrying Harry but that wasn’t the problem.
Nathan’s eyes in the picture caught the reflection of the sun from the window. Damien squatted before the frame and ran his palm across the picture till he found what he was looking for. There was a camera attached to Nathan’s eyes.
Nathan was watching him right now. Damien moved closer to the picture and smiled, it meant that Nathan had seen their little scene in the kitchen. A plan was already forming in Damien’s head and when Lauren walked in with that revealing gown of hers, it just wasn’t a plan anymore.
Lauren walked into the kitchen, oblivious to the fact that Damien had been snooping around. “Tea?” she asked him, he nodded in response and she put the kettle on the fire. “How are we going to do the test? We go together to a hospital, or we get a private doctor” She asked. Damien walked to her, he put his hands on either side of her, holding the counter firmly. “The hospital is a better option, a private doctor might give false results.” He traced her jaw, fighting the urge to peer down and into her gown. “The hospital it is then,” She said. He didn’t leave her or move away. Instead, he looked at her intensely, turning her head slightly to the left to get better access to her neck. “What are you doing?” she asked, her voice incredibly lower as her heart beat faster. She looked into his green eyes, noticing how it had turned into a darker shade of green. He didn’t answer her question, he kept tracing her jaw, eventually letting his finger slide all the way t
Stones crunched under Damien’s tires as he pulled into the driveway where Lauren was waiting for him with Harry in her arms. He came out of the car and opened the door for her. “You did not have to do that,” She said as she got in, carrying the little boy close to her chest. Damien said nothing and got onto his own side of the car. Lauren watched him from the corner of her eyes as he pulled out of the house, his jaw unmoving. She looked out of the window, if he wasn’t going to speak to her then she wasn’t going to say anything either. “I called the hospitals ahead of time and there's only one with an opening to directly meet the doctor” he explained as he pulled into the hospital. Lauren immediately felt a chill when he stopped at the car park. This was the exact hospital she had woken up to, only to learn that she was married to Nathan. There was just something about it that was unsettling and the fact that Damien might have called ahead of time to make plans wi
The table is quiet, everyone is afraid to voice their thoughts and what happened the previous day. Damien cleared his throat and turned towards his parents. “I'll be going back today,” he said. They both turn to him in shock “Why? I thought you came back for this?” His father asks him “You can't just give up your child and walk away” his father scolds him. Damien looked at him with a straight face “That’s exactly what I plan to do. Lauren wants me out of the picture and if that's what will make her happy then fine” “He’s not her child, he’s your son too. Take some responsibility” His father yells. His mother puts a hand on his arm to call her husband down. “There’s no need to argue over this Gab,” she said to him “I’m sure he has a reason for coming to this conclusion” she squeezes his hand and he reciprocates. “I understand exactly how he's feeling but, Nathan is going to win if you let this go…” his father continued, despite Paula’s warning glance. “It’s
Five minutes to go. Damien was furious but he didn’t let his anger consume him. he waited as they inspected his jet before deeming it safe for flying. He was going to his summer house in Hawaii, where he could unwind before thinking of the next thing to do. He checked his watch, he was already late. He wondered if Lauren was waiting for him, or if she already figured out he left. His best guess was that she would be happy with her now perfect little family, he was no longer there to pose a threat to them. He bet Nathan would even throw a party that he removed him from the picture for good. “We're all set,” One of the attendants told him. Damien brushed off his suit before walking towards the jet, knowing that he would never set foot here again. This was perhaps the last time he would see his parents unless they finally decided to leave their home and travel elsewhere. He didn’t know why they were so adamant about traveling and leaving their home. Well, if he was married to
Everyone is quiet for a while, trying to digest the reality of what had just been saying. That was the only explanation and they both didn’t know what that meant for the safety of their child. “He would never…” Lauren trailed off knowing that she was just lying to herself. This was exactly what Nathan could do. If he did it before to break them up then he would do definitely do it again to keep them apart. Lauren broke into tears and Damien gathered her in his arms “Don’t worry, I’m going to find our child and bring him back safely” he whispered, gently stroking her hair as she cried. “I need to go back, beg him… “ She said through the tears “You can't do that” Damien said immediately “It’s too dangerous and lord knows he would never admit to it. That’s the kind of person that he is”. “What should I do then, I need to go back. I can't stay here and pretend that everything’s fine” Damien thought for a while, weighing the options that he had. “You can't go back e
It had been a long time since Lauren heard the birds sing early in the morning or the early sun come down to kiss her skin a good morning. She smiled as the birds sang louder, their sweet melody making her drift in and out of sleep. She was afraid to open her eyes, she didn’t want this bliss she felt to come to an end. She felt Damien turn on his own side of the bed and drape his arm on her torso. “Regretting what happened already?” he said, his voice still deep with sleep she snuggled closer to him, his body keeping her warm “Not at all”. “Then what are you thinking of so early in the morning,” He asked. He snapped his eyes open when she didn’t answer for a while. He smiled, signaling that he had nothing to worry about “I don’t want this moment to end” she confessed “This is the happiest I’ve been since I woke in that hospital” she said. She reached out and kept her palm on his face “And it’s all because of you” “I hate that everything turned out this way,”
The next morning was quiet and awkward. Mostly awkward with Damien not knowing how to explain everything to Lauren. His eyes were red with eye bags, evidence that he hadn’t slept the previous night. Lauren’s face wasn’t far from his. He had gone out early that morning to get her clothes as she hadn’t come with any, so now he was pacing outside his door and wondering how to give her the items. Finally, he knocked lightly before pushing the door open when he got no response. He heard the shower running, he should have left then but he didn’t. he placed the shopping bag on the bed and went to the bathroom. He could see her through the transparent glass, his body suddenly aching for her. he shook his head and left abruptly when she put off the shower. He didn’t know why he was still thinking of her, it was enough punishment already that he was making her leave. The table was set when Lauren walked into the kitchen, she ignored it, not touching anything no matter how
With unsteady steps Lauren bound up the stairs of her home, her face downcast and troubled, she had a feeling something was wrong but she didn’t know what it was. Nathan wasn’t home when she came in. she looked around the house with pure disgust, she didn’t know how she was going to keep living here with Nathan and pretend that she was still the happy wife that he had married. She wanted to tear down the entire house and set it ablaze but she couldn’t do something that rash, Nathan was too dangerous. She didn’t know what she would do if he tried to harm Damien in any way. Damien had promised to bring Harry back and he was holding him to his words. Maybe if she finally held Harry in her arms she might be happy again. But deep down, she knew she would never truly feel complete without Damien by her side. She brought a bottle of whisky and poured herself a glass, she needed to cool her head so she would be able to handle Nathan when he got back. She was halfway thr
Jenny is still in bed sleeping when I finally get up. Drew left a few minutes ago with the drive, he’s going to turn Father in. He had insisted I remain at home with Jenny while he handles it.While I trust Drew fully, I can’t help the feeling of unease that has taken root in my stomach. The door bell rings on my way downstairs to figure out what Jenny will eat when she wakes up.I open the door. “Did you forget something?”When there’s no answer from Drew I look up and realize he’s not the one at the door. It’s Daisy.“Hey, come in,” I tell her, moving to the kitchen. Does she have the mother thing that alerted her that I’m taking her child away? I pull out a bottle of liquor from stash, carrying a glass with it. If I can get her tipsy enough she wouldn’t even worry about Jenny, and we can all be on our way.Besides it’s not like she cared enough for Jenny, I don’t even want to imagine where she’s going to leave her once I’m up and gone. That seals my decision to have Jenny come with
My face is pressed to the window the entire home. I realize how much I’ve missed home when we pull into the driveway. It has become some sort of sanctuary for me, a place where I can have peace and love. Drew helps me out of the car, holding my hand as he leads me to the door. The minute he opens the door Jenny comes running towards me, like she has been waiting the entire time. She hugs my waist like her life depends on it. I put my hand around her shoulders and keep her close to me.“Are you alright mummy?” she asks softly, gazing at me with her round cute eyes.I push her hair away from her face. “I’m alright princess, did you miss me?”It was a silly question to ask because her answer could be seen from miles away.“Of course I did,” she says with a pout. “I missed Jakey too, how is he?”I rub the little one so he does not feel excluded from our conversation. “He’s alright, he misses you too,” I tell her. That sits good with her because she beams up at me and then looks at my stom
My breath slows down as I watch him fall to the floor with a thud. In a minute I’m sprinting to his side and shaking him to wake up.I look around but there’s no one to help me. Taking his face in my hands I shake him again. “Drew! Wake up! Have you had so much to drink?” I ask him despite knowing he can’t hear him.Bending towards him I smell his breath, it was clear. Then why would- The wine, that was the last thing I saw him take, and he was being weird about it.Could the wine have been- I’m too afraid to admit what my brain already knew. He must’ve know too that the wine was poisoned and he readily took it from me and drank. That was why father looked furious.Uh Oh, Father knows.I look back to the door, half expecting Father to walk through it. I look back to Drew he was already turning a little too pale.“Why did you have to drink it?” I ask him, exasperated. “You should have thrown it away,” I cry.I don’t think I’ve ever felt this helpless before. My purse is in there with J
There’s no a single explanation my mind can conjure for what happened. Every time I think I have it all figured out, another wall comes crashing into me.Does he not want to return because of me? Then what of Jenny? She misses him and he clearly misses her too, seeing how he risked coming to the park just to get a glimpse of her.My head is beginning to ache and the doubt that it was actually him begin to slip into the cracks of my mind.Drew could be right and I was just imagining him. If that was the case then my mind is daring very vivid, because the longing and worry I saw in his eyes couldn’t have been easily conjured with so much emotion attached to them.My entire body trembles as I exhale. In all of this I’m glad I reacted on time to my fall, otherwise Jakey could’ve been hurt and all for nothing at that. Keeping him means so much to me than going after what could possibly be Don’s look alike.I massage my forehead, the discomfort in there bordering on being unbearable. The As
I don’t come downstairs until the doorbell rings. I’ve done a pretty good job of avoiding Jenny and now I was going to risk running into her.The entire house is quiet when I come down, she must be taking a nap. For some reason I tiptoe to the door and stifle a startle when I open the door to a rather grumpy looking Dr. Shelby. All since I’ve know him, he’s always smiling, patient. There was this airiness that surrounded him, it always made you feel at ease with him. But all that is left now are deep frown lines of his face and I hate to be the reason for it.“How did you think drinking while being pregnant was a good idea?” he asks the moment he steps past the threshold. “Why keep a child you’re not going to take proper care of?”My breath seizes in my lung. With a slight tilt to my head I study his expression. His eyes are accusing as the glares at me. This right here is not Dr. Shelby. Someone has taken him and put in place this angry version that I’m not used to.If anything I fee
It’s my first day as Cassie. Like I think she does every morning, I’m sitting in front of the dresser and struggling to put on makeup.I don’t know how Cassie used to do it, the perfect flawless look she always had whenever I saw her.I can’t even tell which comes first, I’m holding a small bottle that has foundation written on it but I have no idea how to get it on my face. How they hell was she able to use all this stuff? I throw the brush in front of me on the floor. At this rate I’m never going to leave the house.I hear Drew as he comes into the room. “What’s the matter?” he asks.I frown when I turn and see him with only a towel wrapped around his waist.“Carrie?”That brings my attention back to him. I force my gaze back up and glare at him. “I told you to call me Cassie, we can’t have you slipping up like this when we leave the house.”He scratches his chin lightly. “How about I give you a pet name, it’s only natural since we’re supposed to be married. It feels awkward calling
Everyday that I see the sun rise is torture to my soul. Every morning that I wake up without Don by my side tears my heart into a million pieces.I don’t know where life ends and where death starts. They’ve both become the same to me. It has made me prisoner in this dark perilous place called my mind. I sit by the window every night and wait for the morning never breaks, but that even is too much to ask. This is my own hell. This is my own home. There’s nothing on the news about the explosion. If I hadn’t been there myself I wouldn’t even believe that it happened. No bodies have been found. That is both my hope and my nightmare. Two long months of emptiness and guilt, that is my punishment. What if he’s really gone? What if he didn’t survive? No one would be alive and stay hidden for that long. What if he’s out there looking for me?I deflate at that. The chances are unlikely, especially after the way we parted. I should have held onto him a little longer, laced his fingers with mine
I light a cigar immediately as I enter the elevator and puff with a sigh. Home is a place where everyone longs to be. A sanctuary, some would say but it isn’t the same for me. It’s the last place I want to be.I loosen my tie as I get into the car. “Take the longer route,” I tell my driver when he gets in. There’s a hum and I know he heard me. Like every other employee he knows not to speak to me because there was no telling what my reaction would be. To them, I'm the hot-headed son with a short temper. It looks like only Karl didn’t get the memo after he was hired. Now that my mind has wandered back to him, I pull out my phone and put a call through to HR. When Thelma connects the call, I ask her to send me all the files on Karl and everything he submitted during his employment process. It would be on my desk first thing in the morning.I take another puff as the car rolls down the road. It’s going at a perfect pace for me. Not slow but also not fast enough to get me home earlier tha
It’s been five minutes since I broke into my house and another two since I made it up the stairs to my bedroom. The only sound I hear as I move through the house is my heavy breathing. I half expect someone to jump out of the shadows but there’s no one.I stand still in front of my door, my hand in the air, mid-way to the knob. I’m not sure what to expect after ten years. Did they move my things out or did they simply ignore the room like they always ignored me?The silence drowns out my thoughts as I recall what I’m here for. Get the drive and be gone before anyone comes back. With a gulp, I push the door open and switch on the lights. When my eyes adjust to the room I see that everything is exactly where it used to be. My favorite teddy bear that Thomas bought me when I was five is still lying against the side of my bed. Even my books are still all over the floor from when Cassie barged into my room the day before our last birthday together and demanded that I give her my toys to pl
