It took us a little while to get back to his place in silence. Uncannily, I didn't want to get off the car. I just wanted the journey back to go on forever, putting the time on loop and not even getting a glimpse of the future. When we reached his place, I expected him to get off the car and make me do the same. However, we stayed still for a few minutes in silence before Aiden started the engine and drove around for a little more time. I was too tired to be surprised how he could know what I wanted.
"I need to tell Anna about all of this, I guess", I said. "Uhm, she kind of invited me over tonight. And, it'll be a problem if she randomly comes over to my place."Aiden seemed to be thinking about what I had said as his frown deepened."Don't visit her for a few days, until I understand the seriousness of this situation. You can just tell her that you'll be busy for a couple of days.", he said, still putting thought to it. "Just find a reason.""Yeah, just blatantly lie to her.""Blatantly lie to her or get her hurt. Which seems like the best and most moral option to you, Haven", he said, immediately.I glared at him and remained silent only to hear him say "guessed so.""What if she comes over as a surprise to get me something? She does that sometimes", I said.Aiden gave me a weird look and said,"Even when you tell her that you'd be busy?", he asked.I nodded."Ah. Whatever kind of friend you are.", he replied. "Let's just keep this down-low for a few days. If she visits you in these few days, you can tell her then. If not, then no harm."Whatever he said did make some sense. So we agreed on this without any further arguments. In a few minutes, we reached his silent, humongous place. I ambled my way through the door behind Aiden feeling like I had been here the first time. He led the way to one of the extra (guest) rooms where I was going to stay from then on."It looks beautiful", I said, giving him a small smile. It really was a beautiful, huge room with the darkest shade of ivory walls and a bookshelf about two feet from the queen-sized bed. I sat on the bed, appreciating the comfortable mattress and silky cream sheets, while Aiden left the room asking me to join for lunch after around 20 minutes. I went through the books to find a great collection of classics and Non-fiction. Someone had a good taste in books, I thought. After going through almost everything in the guest bedroom, I stepped outside and walked down the stairs, which took me a minute to find. I guessed Aiden was in his room or outside somewhere because nobody was in the living room. This helped me take my time appreciating each detail of the modern architecture, artifacts, and bizarre-looking vases."You're here already. I'll set everything for lunch in a minute. I'm sorry for taking long.?", I heard someone say, making me jump and almost drop the little turtle relic that I was examining.I turned around to see that it was Martha, the cook. She was an old lady, who looked like she was close to her sixties, with pleasant and friendly features.I smiled at her and said, "I was just examining this place. Please don't take any pressure. Take your time. Also, Aiden is not here yet, so it's not really a problem. Don't apologize.""Oh! Aiden is not going to have lunch here, honey. He is most definitely out for work", she said, with a sad smile."Ah, who needs that brooding man. We'll have fun. Let me help you", I said, giggling.Martha argued by telling me that I didn't have to help. However, with heavy persuasion, she agreed to it.Martha and I seemed to have a lot of fun. Initially, she hesitated to have lunch with me until I played the "I don't want to eat alone" card. She was such a darling. We talked for a long time through which I got to know that she had been working here for around 30 years."Wow, that's such a long time", I said, "So you knew Aiden as a kid right? How was he as a child?""Ah! He was such a wonderful child. Kind and innocent. I remember, how intelligent he was too. Says the right things and takes great care of his brother and sister. I remember when he was three, he had difficulty pronouncing my name. He used to call me 'Maatha, Maatha'", she laughed ."It is a shame that a young boy like him had to face a whole different world after his parents' death."I got to know two new things about Aiden that day. He had a brother too. And that his parents' death affected him in some way. Before I could ask Martha about his parents' death, I heard a huge squeal behind me making me whip my head to face the source only to find Lisa."Hey! You're here! I heard that you are going to stay here for a while. We're going to have a lot of fun", she said, engulfing me in a huge hug. I returned the hug, realizing that she sounds a lot like Anna. I knew that I'd miss her in the next couple of days, nevertheless, I told myself that everything was for our best. I spent the whole evening with Lisa, watching movies while eating Martha's deliciously baked cookies. After a while, Lisa had to go to "work." So, I talked to Martha for some time about having my stuff moved here. She informed me that I'd get them by tomorrow morning. I couldn't ask her about Aiden's parents as she seemed busy and was in a hurry to call her daughter who worked in California.I went back to the guest room and read something for a few hours. No matter where I stay or how huge this place was, I had to get out at least for a few minutes to refresh my mind. So, I wrote a quick note on the notepad that Martha often uses to jot down some recipes, before going out for a quick walk.It had been a while since I started my stroll. I started to think that it had become my thing to forget time while going on walks to get some fresh air. Remembering that the last time I did this it didn't go well, I decided to go back. No matter how many times I find myself in front of the mansion-like house of Aiden, I can never get used to it.I hummed along with the song that was playing in my head parallelly with my thoughts while stepping inside the house. I decided to greet Martha and let her know that I came back home before going to bed. However, shattered pieces of the bud vase that used to stand on the end table caught my attention. I immediately dashed inside to see if Martha was okay only to find her cleaning an even larger mess of glass bottles and glasses."Oh my god! Martha! Is everything okay?", I exclaimed, rushing towards her and picking up pieces."Oh! It's okay, dear. I think Aiden is having a bad day. He tends to take it out on things surrounding him.", she said l
I prepared my monologue in mind when I saw him enter the house, checking something on his phone. He went straight to his room after sending a quick glance at me. This was it. I decided to go to his room, knock on the door, and tell him that I needed to talk to him about something.Letting out a huge sigh, I made my way across his room being hit with a sense of Deja Vu. It was funny though, a few hours ago I decided to just run away from this place and go home. However, I was not someone who'd make impromptu decisions. I didn't want to risk anything or anyone. So, there I was succumbing to the gravity of the situation and standing in front of his door. I slightly knocked on his door and waited for him to say something."What?", he snapped, clearly agitated with someone disturbing his solitude.I cleared my throat before speaking."Uhm, it's me", I said, softly. After what felt like a minute or two, he opened the door. I noticed a hint of faded shock on his face. He probably was not exp
I rested my head on the bed and stared blankly at the ceiling. Last night, we kissed again. I guess, it could have gone more forward but we stopped and declared that it was too late. It was almost nine, which means I had to get ready for work, which means I had to face Aiden. Would it be awkward to look him in the eye after last night? I was not sure.I lazily dragged myself to the bathroom and got ready for the day.Breakfast was moderately entertaining. I told Martha about college and a little bit of my previous job. With everything that had been happening the last few days, I realized that I had not been checking my emails or applying to new jobs nearby. We chatted for some more time until I saw Aiden making his way down the stairs and checking something on his phone. I took a sharp breath and held it for God knows how long. He gave me a quick glance and approached the dining table. Martha immediately got up, ready to serve him breakfast."Finish your breakfast, Martha", he said, b
I think it is established by now that whenever Aiden and I seem to look at each other, our eyes always trail towards each other's eyes. They are the complete opposite which makes it all the more reason to be attracted."Hey", I chirped, making James turn his head to take a look at who I was waving at. It was obvious to him that I didn't know anybody in this town except him and Anna. And right then, Aiden too.Aiden made his way towards us and stood there impatiently."Shall we go?", he said, tapping his foot restlessly on the ground.I frowned at him. He was unnecessarily rude to James by not acknowledging that I had company or that there was a familiar human right next to us. I decided to ease the atmosphere by ignoring his question."Aiden, this is James one of my best friends at work. James, this is Aiden, uhh you know?", I said, pointing at each other.James replied with a 'hi' to which Aiden responded with a nod."Shall we go now?", he repeated. This made me even more agitated at
My mind concocted various reasons why Anna would run away from me. I connected the dots to the day when I found bruises on her face. Was she in trouble? The very thought that she could be in trouble and I had been doing nothing to help her, killed my insides. I redialed her number only to find it going straight to voicemail."Hey, Anna! How are you? I thought I saw you at the club but couldn't reach you. There are so many things I need to tell you. Call me.", I sent the voice mail.I made sure that I did not sound worried but in reality, I was freaking out. My mind made up all indifferent scenarios just to make it worse for my sanity. Eventually, a sense of realization struck me when I remembered her boyfriend, Kyle.Did he do something to hurt her?I pushed past the crowd and came outside the party to get some fresh air. Something about last night helped me have a better sleep. I did not know whether it was because of the assurance that Anna would be safe or the certainty that Aiden would always be there for me no matter what.I woke up later than usual with heavy body aches. I blamed it on Lisa for tiring me out by taking me out. My daily ritual continued until it was time for me to go to work. I had second thoughts about going to work with my fatigue, so I decided to inform James and go late."Hey, James.", I chirped into the phone. " I can't make it early today. Is it possible to cover for me for a few hours?""Sure, Haven. Is everything okay?", He asked, worried."Yeah, just a little sick, Jamie.", I said.It was understandable for him to be worried because I had not usually asked him to cover for me unless it was an emergency....I made my way down the stairs and greeted Marth
I could not concentrate much on work even with James around to crack the lamest jokes. After some time, he approached me with a grim expression. "Is everything okay, Haven?", he asked. "You seem to be a little off today." "Yes, James. I am fine. Just a little tired.", I said, letting out a sigh. He gave me a side hug and rubbed my shoulder as a sign of comfort. The little things he does and says usually leave an impact on me. I decided to tell him about Anna and my decision to tell her everything. "James.", I said, "I need your advice about something." He looked at me slightly surprised as I usually do not do this. James knew me and saw me as an independent woman. So, seeing me in confusion and desperate for advice could have perplexed him. "Of course, Haven. What do you need?", he said, frowning. "Let's go to Blossombee after our shift and you tell me everything there?" I nodded and continued with my work while he gave me one last glance before going back to his shift. It felt
It was a familiar place. Rusted metallic chains on a filthy desk, scraped walls with unidentified words, and a stone-cold atmosphere. It's uncanny how this room gets even scarier."Please, don't", I whispered, my voice hoarse and small, "not again plea-"My voice was cut off when I felt a pair of dark, lanky hands against my throat. Tears streamed down my eyes as I started struggling to unlatch the iron hold.I jolted up from my sleep, sweating profusely. My heart beat faster than ever while I tried to catch my breath. I pushed the blanket off my legs to stand up and wobbled my way across the room. It was around three in the morning when I checked the time while quenching my dry throat."It was just a nightmare", I mumbled to myself repeatedly, in a desperate effort to calm my nerves. It has been a very long time since I got a nightmare that I started to believe that they stopped. I, apathetically, blamed stress and the recent burdens of moving to a different place. It has been almost

"Lisa seems like a very bubbly person", I said, remembering her noticeable energy. He uttered a quick "yes, she is" with his eyes on the road, never glancing away.I started to realize that I walked for so long to be this far from my house or Aiden's place seem to be further away."What were you doing there all alone? In the middle of the night?", he said, after some time, glancing at me slightly. To be honest, I did not have an answer. If I did, it would sound stupid. I put my curl behind my ears and replied." I lost my way after attending a party," I said, trying to make it believable. He raised his brow before replying."It didn't look like it.
