Emma Starr
“Are you crazy?”
My best friend, Morticia said over the phone.
“You’re looking for adoptive parents for a child that has a father?”
“I need someone that won’t make him miss me. His dad is far from that, following the fact that he’s been getting on my nerve ever since his return.”
“Wish I could help, somehow...” she replied, as I took some cabbage putting it in the shopping cart. I went for the cheaper items because that was what I could afford. “Help raise him?”
I bit my lower lips, desperately asking her. This wasn’t the first time I did. “That will be awesome.”
“Hell no, I can’t even raise myself to talk less of a kid.”
Morticia was a redhead. I met her in this neighborhood at a community party which we both volunteered helping services for. Since then, we became close and inseparable.
“God. What do I do now?”
I ran my hands through my hair, as I walked to a store to get foodstuff.
“Didn’t you say his father showed up in town?”
“He did, but he’s hurling money at us instead of taking his full roles! I don’t understand why I spread my legs for such a man in the first place...”
I discreetly whispered to her this time.
“Bestie, calm down. You shouldn’t do anything to stress yourself, so something doesn’t happen. How much is left to gather for the surgery?”
“I only got a quarter of it. It’s all so confusing, I can’t help it.” Tears flickered in my eyes. “What will he do when I’m gone, huh? I might drop dead right now and he’s left with no one.”
“I can try?”
“That will be insensitive of me,” I said, knowing the situation with her. Morticia lived with her husband and they decided not to have kids due to bad parenthood inflicted on both of them. “Morticia, don’t worry, I will figure it out.”
“Okay, don’t be hard on yourself though.”
“Yeah sure.”
I said, about hanging up, “One more thing.”
She said, making me pause. “What?”
“Jonathan’s father... you should try giving him a chance.”
“I can’t have my son live in a house full of a myriad of women.”
“How bad is he, on a scale of 1-10? Is he like still the same ass dude or my ex left me so I’m this way?”
“Nicholas Russell has divorced five years ago,” I whispered. “Based on that, he’s my ex-left-me so I’m this way.”
“Then he isn’t bad!”
Some items fell from the other roll, making me widen my eyes. God. I thought it was empty. Had someone been listening to our conversations?
“I’m so sorry!”
A woman in a black coat said to somebody.
“I will call you back, Morticia,” I said, hanging up the phone and trying to go after the woman but she ran as swiftly as possible.
I couldn’t even see her face!
My legs became wobbly making me squat with snapped fists that minute. “Miss, are you okay?”
A community bystander passed by asking, “Yeah sure, I am.”
I said, sitting on the floor and opening my bags instantly.
It seemed like I was getting attention but I ignored it, bringing out my pills to take with water.
Summoning a lot of strength, I tried standing up and luckily the drugs worked instantly.
“That will be $50.”
I brought out some money, handing it to the cashier who said, “Do have a lovely day, Miss Emma.”
I smiled at her. “And you too, Mrs. Elton.”
I opened the door and got out with the foodstuff in my hands, checking my time which read 1:40 pm. By 2 pm, Jonathan will finish his classes today.
“Taxi!”
“I’m already hired, sorry!” he apologized, zooming off like I didn’t even call him in the first place.
“Really?”
The street seemed empty of taxis except for private cars, which made me begin to walk only for a grey Rolls Royce to park by my side. I knitted my brows, looking to see Nicholas in a black shade and this blue check shirt that complimented his brown hair which was packed to the back in a little bun in a sleek gel.
“Get in.”
I sighed, motioning to walk away from him only for him to follow me in slow drives. “Would you stop?”
“Not when the mother to my child is out in this chilly weather.”
A gust of wind swooshed in making me speechless. Nicholas came down from his car, opened the front passenger’s door, and took the grocery bag from my hand. “Come on in.”
He said those words, motioning that I entered.
God. Why was he being kind and irresistible?
“Fine.”
I got in his car closing the door after me with him starting it, and zooming off instantly. “Where should I drive to?”
“Sun Valley Elementary School.”
“I’m not familiar with this town so you might as well describe.”
“Oh, sure... turn at the first bend.”
He did as I asked. “Here?”
“Yes, to the right.”
My eyes flickered to the way his fingers gripped the steering wheel with his veins highlighted as a determined expression contained his features.
God, I hope I didn’t make a mistake. Jonathan was his son. What was wrong with this?
“And... we are here,” I said, a few minutes later taking a hold of my grocery bag and opening the car.
“Thanks,”
“You’re welcome,” he replied, sweeping a glance over me with his eyes. “By any chance is this Jonathan’s school?”
“Mommy! Mommy!”
I looked back only to see my son running towards me with his school bag. He hugged me tightly while I asked him, “How was school today?”
“I did great in my PEs. The teacher was impressed.”
“I can say you took that from your dad.” Nicholas came down from his car, saying. “He was also great at sports and once won a national medal.”
“Really?”
My son let out why I gave Nicholas a what-are-you-doing glance. “Yep.”
“Do you by any chance know daddy? Mommy says he will be back one day but I have not seen him to date.”
“Jonathan, that’s enough for now. Thanks for the ride, Nick.”
I pulled my son's hands motioning to go.
“Hold on!”
He obstructed my movement making me look into his eyes, only to see beaming white lights. My heart thudded immediately looking back only to see a swarm of paparazzi rushing towards us.
“Mr. Nicholas, Mr. Nicholas, over here.”
“Get in the car now, Emma.” He said, carrying Jonathan in his arms and commencing to make his way to the driver’s seat. “Is it true you’re the father to this child?”
The door was already surrounded, thus, hindering a quicker leave in that area. “The Miss over there... is she the mother to your son?”
“We got this news from a reliable town source and will like you to shed more light on it!”
Opening the backseat door, he tucked Jonathan with me who I hugged immediately panicking so much.
“Emma is my bride-to-be. We plan on getting married and prefer you don’t meddle with our personal lives.”
I stared astonishingly at him, through the glass. It was tinted from the outside so he didn’t see me. What was he doing?
“But we just need a little info. Won’t you tell your fans more about yourself?”
I recognized one of the paparazzi team. I have seen her somewhere before. Where? That hair... Yes! She was the one in the grocery shop today. God, this was all my fault.
I shouldn’t have made a call so private and so public.
She was one of the community people and my neighbor’s daughter who aspired to be a newscaster. She leaked the news!
I pressed the car window a little low saying,
“Everyone, listen! I have something important to say to you all!” I exclaimed making them all rush toward me.
“What do you have to say, Miss Emma?!”
“Did you get engaged this year? Care to tell us the exact time? We are happy for you but can you shed more light on it?”
I was immediately caught on guard, with no words to say.
“Mommy, why are they flashing those bright lights on us?”
My son asked, making me cover his eyes.
“Don’t worry son, it will soon go away,” I said.
The diversion was able to make Nicholas make his way to the driver’s seat. He entered, turned on his Rolls Royce, and sped off away from them.
“I’m sorry!” I let out, waving a bye to them feeling entirely awkward before turning to face him.
“Who were those people, mommy?” My son asked me and replied, “They were reporters, baby. They look for news on famous people and incidents.”
He wriggled his brows, “Did any incident happen?”
“No, son... no.”
I said, holding him closely. When we reached a favorable distance, Nick parked the car.
“We need to talk,” he said.
Even though these scenes never seemed to end well, I voiced out my words.
“I-“ we said in unison.
“I mean,”
“You go first,” we repeated together.
“Go first, Emma.”
My son was already beginning to doze off, on my legs making me clear my voice in preparation.
“Why did you tell them I was your bride-to-be?” I questioned, leaning into him. “Are you crazy? Do you have any idea what you’ve done?”
“I don’t think you have any idea of how the community will react knowing I didn’t engage you, despite you having a baby for me,” he said.
“How will they react?”
“Stop coming to Country Club in a protest, maybe, and painting me as the bad guy who uses women. Shit.”
“What is it?”
“We didn’t lose them completely,” he said, staring at the rear-view mirror. I wriggled my brows at the black bus at our back, saying,
“Are those who I think they are?!”
“Yes,” he replied only for me to look back to see black cars behind us following as he drove. “Are we fucked?”
How was this even possible? Goodness… this was fucked up.
“Highly 'cause it seems like someone gave this info to the wrong kind of paparazzi. These kinds are highly persistent. They will take a plane down here, lodge in town, and won’t give up until they find useful info or scandal.”
Emma Starr We got to my house, only to see three paparazzi with their cameras. It seemed like they were already waiting for me. I gulped, glaring at Nicholas. Why did he have to be this famous? “Great, how do we go in now?” I wriggled my brows. Clenching his fists, he hit his hands on his steering wheel, “I will try to find a way, baby.” Nicholas drove in slowly as we studied the entire place. My neighbors were peeking to see what was happening. As if that wasn’t enough, Nicholas had announced me to be his bride-to-be. I wondered if it has reached publication yet... Bringing out my phone, I checked only to see my picture with today’s outfit. The headline read: [Nicholas Russell announces Emma Starr as his Bride-To-Be. Turns out they had a son all along! What could they be hiding?] “Look here, they already made news from it!” I exclaimed, bringing the phone forth so Nicholas could see it. “How fast can they be?” I mean they already settled in my neighborhood, so what were the
7Emma StarrHey Emma, You can’t let your heart melt from this billionaire’s tactics. He’s pretending, gorgeous. He doesn’t even mean any of that. These were the words my head was saying. BLARE! BLARE! Like a warning sign.But... why wasn’t I even going along with that? Why did it sound so genuine? That smile... I enjoyed seeing it on Jonathan’s face. The way he shook his father in an innocent and surreal way. It was something that made me want to stay. That made me hope.It was crazy, God I knew…“Daddy, do you want to see my toy house?”“Sure, where is it?”“Over here, come on daddy,” Jonathan replied to his father who took his hand, guiding them both as they walked to the other side of the room. “My toy house is apart...”“Yes, baby, we had to move so I made it that way so it was easier.”I told him from where I folded the clothes.“Oh...”A sad expression formed on his features. “It’s not the same anymore, mommy. Will Bob the Builder come help put it together.”Nicholas chuckl
8Emma StarrWhat more horror could that do to a woman’s life?!Engaged to a lady’s man...Thing was, it was a fake engagement. I shouldn’t give a damn about anything or care about his entanglements!“Where are the casting crews?”I could hear Nicholas yell from the rehearsal room as I cleaned the rehearsal’s entrance.“And the actresses? Goddamn, and the lead actress? Where the hell is, she?!”I wriggled my brows wondering why he was angry. Was it due to what happened earlier? Or work stress? Was it something I wasn’t aware of?“I’m sorry sir,” someone replied to him. “We just got a call. She was involved in an accident and is currently bedridden.”“An accident? How did that, fucking happen?!”“A hit-and-run. Sources say she was trying to avoid hitting an animal only to collide with a huge tree.”“Dammit.”Nicholas seethed. “It just had to happen at this moment. The final shoot. Damn, our competitors are ahead. They released several movies and we haven’t even successfully released
9Emma StarrGod, I could feel my entire body heat up at his gaze.I tore my eyes off him with the intent to take off the outfit.“Going somewhere, princess?”A familiar voice tuned in, making me look behind me. It was Nicholas. His hands were in his pockets... and, there was this gaze in his eyes. It was raw and full of wanting.“W-what are you doing?” I started, only for him to surge nearer. “Hmm, why don’t I ask the questions instead? How does it feel to kiss anyone apart from me? I was in your head the entire time, wasn’t I?”I narrowed my eyes at how he knew that.“Nope, I saw it as an act. Why are you getting worked up?”“Worked up? That’s incorrect. I make people work up. For women, it’s rarely the other way round.”I glared at him, wondering why he was a jerk most time.“Then go meet those ‘women’.”He moved to stop me but I was quick to sidestep his grasp. On realization that I did that, I gave myself some sort of inner accolade.Maybe, just maybe… I could resist him after al
10Emma StarrWas it my pre-period hormones?Or it had something to do with the way he taunted me?These thoughts occupied my head because right now, my body couldn’t even control itself. It was like anything related to Nicholas Russell turned it on. I was a grown woman at 28, yes, but this… was becoming so much for me to handle.I think he noticed how aroused I was because he dominantly made his way toward my legs. Sweeping a dark gaze over my lips, he claimed them with me opening up for him.He toyed his tongue with mine, circling them with mine, making me respond to this power he seemed to have over me. God help me, was I becoming a sucker for his kisses? Or holds…Control yourself, Emma. Please do.I tried to tell myself but my body was currently doing the opposite of that, as my hands wrapped around his back clasping around them and clinging to him like he was my dear life.“Mommy?”We disbanded from each other immediately in a quick rush, watching as Jonathan came out from the
11Emma StarrStaring at how good-looking he looked while sleeping, a pout formed in my mouth that minute wondering why he had to be so annoying at times. I mean, there were good sides to Nicholas Russell, but it seemed like the bad side overshadowed the good.God, what am I doing? After a day of hot sex with him, I’m supposed to have a clear head on how we currently were. I mean I was dying but-Right.I’m dying.I thought, looking around. What was I even doing here? I was supposed to be getting everyone ready for my demise. I’m supposed to make them feel like they could do without me.“Dammit.”I whispered, placing my head on the pillows in total frustration. I had a son. Leaving him to the poor world wasn’t fair. “What am I going to do? What, should I do? Talk to me, my Creators. Please, talk to me. Please, please, please.”A yawn brought me out of my daze, making me look back to the sofa to see Nicholas stirring in his sleep. He unconsciously swooped a part of his almond-brown hai
12Emma StarrI searched for what to say only for a certain thought to imprint my mind at his words. It was a flashback of what he said in the past:“I don’t take a woman twice. I don’t fall in love, neither am I looking for a happy-ever-after.”Narrowing my eyes, I thought of how those were entirely separate from each other.“If you don’t take a woman twice, how does not sharing their work? Does that even apply to everyone or just me?”I asked immediately, only for his face to appear flustered like he was caught off guard.“W-What are you insinuating with that question?” he blurted out. To be honest, his expression seemed extremely funny.Who knows, maybe a certain billionaire found a certain woman he met five years ago, fascinating enough to melt his playboy’s heart?I thought.“Who knows?” I shrugged only for him to put his hands in his pockets, commencing to walk forward.“That is all bogus, Emma, and quite tricky. You’re not becoming foxy, are you?”I chuckled walking after him t
13Nicholas RussellI held the script for the next part of Romancing a Spinster in my hands, studying it carefully and re-reading the roles to be played. I desired to know what else Emma was going to act with the lead actor. Not that I hadn’t gone through it in the past. I forgot some basic parts but knowing this was a romantic tale, there was this withheld anger in my chest. Yes, I never let anything get in the way of me making money. The business was never mixed with pleasure. But Emma made me want to break that fucking rule.“Sir, the lighting and stage preparation has been made for the choreography. The female lead isn’t here, yet, however.”“She isn’t?” I wriggled my brows, asking my assistant who nodded his head.“Ah, I see,”I folded my hands wondering what she was trying to pull this time. “Let me try reaching her. Inform the team of the situation.”“Okay, sir.”As he walked away, my brows furrowed at what she was trying to pull this time.Wasn’t she aware of today? This woman
Nicholas Russell “Hello, yeah, speak.” I took a phone call as I drove the car down Nevada town. “Sir we just spotted your ex-wife in Nevada’s airport, from her coordination she seems to be making her way to you.” One of my movie crew members, said to me leaving me wide-eyed, “What? How’s that, are you... sure about what you saw?” I asked with a fierce grip on the steering wheel bringing Emma’s attention, she stared at me curiously at what was happening. “Yes sir, I thought to inform you so there won’t be surprises.” “Okay, thanks for the information,” I said. “One more thing sir- her luggage it seemed she’ll be staying for a while.” “Really? That’s strange. Thanks for the call, Reuben.” “It’s nothing, sir, one more thing though, she seemed-“ I hung up so I didn’t leave Emma curious any longer. The last thing I needed was her worrying about her state. “Everything okay?” She asked, from her seat only for me to nod a ‘yes’. “Just business call on the movie ratings and some othe
17Nicholas RussellEmma buried her head in my chest, making me smirk. She wasn’t the kind to be shy thus, making her like this was quite rare. This was cute however, thinking of the fact that she kept something so delicate from me was scary. When the doctor told me those words, it made me feel lost. It reminded me of the familiar feeling that passed my chest when my wife left me... I abhorred every inch of that feeling because there was nothing for me, in it.So painful...Unnerving and heart wrenching...Her yawn brought me from my thoughts. The sun in the bright sky was starting to set. And it looked like it was going to rain anytime soon. Walking with her in the hospital arena wasn’t something I planned.I wanted the opposite of this for her. Especially with knowing that she might not be here soon.“Gosh, I’m so tired.” she said, stretching while I arched a brow at her.“So,” I started, “Will you tell me the reason you kept something big as this from me?”“What was I meant
16Emma StarrThere was Mrs. Elton from the supermarket. By her side was Morticia and a few familiar faces, Mr. Henry didn’t exclude himself, as he was just right at the front. To my surprise, they brought themselves down here to the hospital making my heart flutter with so much appreciation held in them.“I’m so sorry, Emma. I should have listened to you when you said you couldn’t manage the party. Who knew this was what you meant? Oh, this is so hard to take in...”Mr. Henry sounded sober, bringing out some hanky to clean his eyes. “We agreed not to make her feel sad.”Someone whispered, but I could hear making me smile a bit watching an elderly woman come forward,“Whatever this is, we are fighting it together, Emma, don’t you worry child.”I nodded, as she hugged me in comfort. My hands moved to return the hug, feeling extremely foreign. There was a reason I didn’t want any of them to know about my condition. I didn’t want them to worry so much about me.We were like a family. Any
15Nicholas RussellThe Doctor removed his glasses, standing up and walking towards me to place a hand on my shoulder.“…After that,” he continued. “A section of her skull will be removed to access her brain underneath and get to the tumor. Typically, it takes 6 hours to complete and there are risks but in Miss Emma’s case, a skilled neurosurgeon will be performing the surgery due to the complexity and number of years we had to wait for it. It will therefore reduce the possibility of bleeding, infection or any loss of mental functions but we will have to dissuade the use of anesthesia so it’s completely favorable.”“Anesthesia? Isn’t that to relieve pains and induce sleep?”“Yes... but,”I stared at him in disbelief as he said those words, with an apologetic expression. It meant she will have to go through pain. The thought irked me. I wished I could do something.“Impossible!”I banged my hand on the table angrily, staring at the Doctor. Brain tumor? Smears of tears covered my eyes.
14Nicholas RussellI moved nearer to her with a smirk on my lips.Staring at me like she was astonished on spot, she took a step back but I was quick. My hands snaked around her waist, stabilizing her from falling in tune with the pink flats she was wearing.“Y-You want me to kiss me or it?”She said, referring to the gift only for me to remove the white thread that was sitting on her gorgeous dark hair.“Neither of the above,” I brought the strand to her attention, only for her cheeks to redden. They were pink and had this rosy essence that made me chuckle slightly.“Oh... that, thanks for helping with that.”“Yep.”I muttered, taking steps away from her.“I have to go- I mean we have to go now,” she said, rushing ahead to the rehearsal room’s direction. I went after her that minute.“What now?”The character, acting Declan in Romancing a Spinser muttered in an angry tone. “You’ve been away for the past three months, then you finally show up, city girl? Why... why are you here, I wa
