I pulled my jacket tighter around myself as I stood outside the club doors.
I had just finished with another grueling shift at the bar and was waiting for my lift, who I was sure had completely forgotten about me, I had been waiting for hours.
It was rather late, but I knew I would need to walk home, I had forgotten my phone behind and had no way of making any calls to get someone to fetch me.
With a heavy sigh, as I shivered from the cold night air, I began my walk home while wishing I hadn't chosen to wear such a short dress; it wasn't exactly the safest area at the best of times.
The cold chilled me to the bone as my skin pickled with goosebumps, each step I took felt colder than the last.
I was thankful I wasn't far from the flat I rented with my cousin Dom.
I couldn't help but shake my head at the thought of him, he had been the only one in my family to ever really understand me without any judgment.
He understood that I resented my entire childhood and wanted to part from my family's lavish lifestyle. I was even happy when my family disowned me for choosing to move out and live my life the way I wanted to.
In an effort to help me with this, Dom had agreed to let me share the flat with him.
As I neared the apartment building my face scrunched up as I squinted my eyes in an attempt to make out what lay on the front steps.
I was too far to see exactly what it was, but it looked to me like it may be some sort of large bag slung carelessly on the stairs.
Rushing to get over and inspect it, I froze once I was close enough to see what it was.
It was certainly no bag.
My feet refused to move, keeping me frozen to the spot while I stood shaking in shock at the sight before me.
It was Dom.
He was laying on the steps with blood pouring from his mouth.
When the initial shock wore off I could feel my heart tightening, a sharp pain in my chest as I dropped to my knees, and my hands shaking as I reached out to my cousin.
"Dom?! Oh my God! Help! Someone! Please!" I screamed while frantically looking around.
Dom's eyes were swollen and as he tried to speak his voice came out in gasps making it hard for me to understand him clearly.
"Dom, I need to go and get help, okay? I'm going to get help."
His hand grasped loosely at my wrist, "Kin... Go... Not safe for you."
"What? I don't understand, Dom. It's going to be okay," pulling my hand free from his grasp I quickly got to my feet, I couldn't believe that with all my screaming, no one had bothered to come out and help me or at least check what was going on.
I glanced around me, making sure the person or people who had done this to Dom were not still around before I climbed the steps to the building, desperately praying someone would call an ambulance for me.
GIANNI
While the girl ran into the building, there was no indication that she could have seen the two of us watching the scene from only a few feet away.
We were hidden by the car marked on the opposite side of the street.
"Who is that, boss?" Talon asked me.
I shook my head, "I have no idea. She doesn't look his type so I doubt it's a girlfriend."
"Shouldn't we finish this? She's probably calling the cops as we speak."
I kept my eyes on the building, normally I would have agreed with my second in command, but the woman had intrigued me.
"Talon, go in there and make sure she doesn't do that. Do not kill her. I'll bring Dominic up to his flat. I want to see how this plays out."
Talon would have preferred to kill Dominic, I knew this.
But he knew better than to argue with me, I was known for having quite the temper when people disobeyed me.
TALON
I left Gianni outside while I went in for the girl.
Fortunately for me, she was banging on a door that appeared not to be opening which meant that she had not been successful in alerting the authorities just yet.
I approached her with fake concern on my face, "Excuse me, miss, I heard you screaming, is everything okay?"
She spun to face me, her green eyes glassy with tears.
I inhaled sharply, I had not been expecting her to be this beautiful, from afar I had only been able to see her long dark hair and creamy pale skin.
Even with tears running down her face and a frantic look in her eye, she was strikingly beautiful up close.
"Please! I need a phone!"
Right, bosses orders, I reminded myself, "Do you not have one? Mine has died."
"No! Yes! But it's in... never mind!"
My eyes were still covered by the cloth and my hands were still tied behind my back as I was forced to walk forward by the firm grip that held onto my upper arm. I couldn't tell which of the men had me, but I assumed it was the smaller man who had Auburn hair and hazel eyes, he had looked the kinder between the two of them. The man Dom had called Gianni on the other hand had terrified me. His cold eyes were so dark they looked like black pools; I wouldn't deny that he had good looks though, he was tall with broad shoulders and thick arms, and his short dark hair complemented his tanned skin. But where he may have had good looks, it did nothing to take away from the fact that simply looking at him had terrified me, and it had nothing to do with the scar over his eye either. You could immediately tell that he was a cruel man, from the hard look on his face, and the lack of emotion in his eyes. "There's steps coming up." I nodded my head to acknowledge, I was thankful that it was in
GIANNI "Why do you look so pissed off?" Talon asked the next morning as he walked into my office. He paused, "Is that a cut on your nose?" I glared at him, "I went in to her last night. Bitch kneed me in the face." Talon's face went white, "Is she okay?" "Is she okay? Did you not fucking hear me? She's the one that attacked me!" "What did you do to her?" "Nothing! I went in and my dick got the better of me. Almost fucked her but she kneed me in the face. And you know what I did after that? I walked the fuck out." Talon shook his head, "She's going to be difficult. And we both know that Dom is going to take forever to get all the money paid up." I felt myself get annoyed again, I didn't want to have this conversation right now, "Talon, I know what I'm doing. If you're so worried about her, you deal with her. But she stays alive, she is our only leverage." Talon nodded begrudgingly, "Fine. I'll play the babysitter." "No, Scott will handle her." I knew Talon well enough and the
KINLEY Tina had returned with me to my room where she had left me. I took a long shower before putting on a pair of shorts and a simple top before going into the room. I paused when I saw Gianni sitting at the dresser, a glass of amber liquid in his hand. His black jacket was gone and the first few buttons of his black shirt were undone, revealing a glimpse of the tattoos on his tanned chest. He watched me silently as I walked over to climb onto the bed. "Those attacks, do they happen often?" He asked suddenly. I shrugged, pulling my knees to my chest before pulling the comforter over myself, "I, uh, sometimes. It depends on my level of anxiety I guess," I felt uncomfortable speaking to my captor about this. He took a sip of his drink before pouring more into the glass from a bottle on the dresser. I took a breath as he came over to sit on the bed. He wasn't close to me, but I could feel my chest begin to tighten again. "Here," he held out the glass to me, "I'm pretty sure
KINLEY I had just stepped out of the shower, wrapping a fluffy towel around myself as the door opened. I yelped in surprise, Gianni stood at the door. "Have you never heard of knocking?" I asked, both terrified and annoyed. He wore a black dress shirt with black slacks that complimented his tanned skin. Really, Kinley? Checking out your kidnapper now? He smirked at me, "How are you feeling today?" "I was feeling just fine until I saw you." He walked over to me and I willed myself not to begin shaking. He backed me up against the cold tile wall, his fingers slowly trailing up and down my arms leaving a trail of goosebumps behind. "You smell good," he brought his face to the nape of my neck and I trembled. I was both terrified and sickly turned on by this man. It made me feel sick. "Join me for lunch?" he asked, his lips brushing against my skin as he spoke. "It's not as though I have a choice." "Of course you do," one of his hands dropped to my thigh, lightly running his
KINLEY I sat in the front seat of Gianni's car, a few other cars of his were parked nearby, filled with his men. I wasn't sure exactly where we were, but it was a pretty empty place, a park of some sort with overgrown grass and empty buildings, Gianni had stepped out to go over to another car. He said they were doing business and he needed to collect something. I assumed it might have been drugs or something along those lines. I knew I couldn't run, there were too many of his people around. Getting out of the car to stretch, my eye caught sight of something in one of the empty buildings. It looked very much like a sniper. I spun, no one else seemed to notice it. Talon looked at me and caught the line of my attention. He frowned up at the building and everything went to hell right there. I wasn't sure where it came from but there was a shot fired and suddenly everyone was jumping from cars and shooting. I crouched down, the loud gunshots sending me into a panic, I began to f
KINLEY I woke up alone in the room and breathed a thankful sigh. Rummaging through the closets I took out an oversized band shirt and a pair of shorts that would fit before going to shower. Once I was done, I made my way through to the living room where Gianni sat on one of the sofas. Talon was opposite him. Gianni smiled at me, "Gattina, come here," he motioned for me with his hand. I glanced at Talon before going over to sit beside Gianni. He slung an arm casually around my shoulders, "Did you sleep well?" I nodded, not wanting to speak. "She shouldn't be here, Gia." I watched as Gianni's jaw tightened, his eyes narrowing at Talon, "Why not? She handled herself well back there." "She is our leverage against Dom, she is not a guest and she is not a friend." I was surprised at the anger coming from Talon, he had seemed calm and sweet most of the time. Gianni dropped a hand to my thigh making me squirm uncomfortably. "Kinley, we believe there is a mole amongst us. We will
KINLEY Gianni looked at Talon before taking me by the arm, "Talon, car. Now."I hurried to keep up with Gianni while he pulled at my wrist."What were you doing in the study?" he asked suddenly, spinning to a stop so abruptly that I almost bumped right into him."Uh... I got lost coming out from the toilet."He frowned, I knew he didn't believe me."I was going to run away from you." Honesty is the best policy, right? He scratched at the back of his neck, "You were going to try and escape?"I nodded, "Yes. I was going to run off, but then I had to hide in the study and I came across all this, these two guys came in and started talking about me, saying I'd get them good money," my eyes widened as I remembered the rest of their conversation, "Oh! They spoke about you too and the mole. They said they would speak to Dom about me tomorrow, and that the mole is getting real close to putting you away for a long time."Gianni tilted his head, a dangerous glint in his eye, "They want to sell y
KINLEY Opening my eyes I stared out at the sun shining through the open curtains.Pulling the blanket closer around me, I thought of how Gianni had chosen to punish me the night before. It seemed like such a strange punishment."Hey, you're up." I looked over at the door to see Talon."Don't tell Gianni, I want to lay here for a bit longer.""Gianni is busy," he walked in closing the food behind him, "Did he make you sleep with him?"My eyes widened, "He would do that?!""Yes. He has before.""Well, thankfully he didn't... He made me strip to my underwear and get in the pool for a long while."Talon took a seat on the edge of the bed, "You can count yourself lucky it wasn't worse.""While I can agree with you, I still can't understand it. It seems like such a strange form of punishment.""Gianni is a strange man, Kin. He knows ways to punish you that you could never even dream of."I shuddered at his words, "I guess I shouldn't piss him off again.""That's what he wants. He wants to
