But the thing was that I wasn’t sure if I had earned it.

As the kids’ laughter filled the garden, I shoved the doubt aside and focused on the moment, on the peace we had finally found. For the rest of the day, we let ourselves enjoy the calm. The kids played, we had snacks, we watched TV, and for a while, it was easy to pretend that everything was perfect.

I just wanted to be sure that she's finally free of the past—once and for all.
