Valeria had no choice but to move in with me. For the sake of the twins and their health, we had to be together.

I knew it wasn’t what she wanted—probably the last thing on her mind. But we had no other choice. The witch had earlier warned us not to separate the kids again, but we did, and now we were paying for the consequences of our actions. Though I had tried to persuade her, times without a number to move in with Dave, she remained adamant, as pigheaded as ever. And I didn't want to force her.

Their condition had worsened over the last few weeks, and the tension between us had reached a fever pitch. She still looked at me with that cold steel in her eyes, but I saw something else there, too—fear. Not of me, but of what she might lose if things continued down this path.

Fortunately enough, as time went by, the twins’ condition improved. It wasn’t a miracle recovery, but it was progress. The fever remained, lingering stubbornly in their small bodies, but their breathing grew
