REESE

The silence hung in the air like a guillotine, ready to snap, taking everyone by surprise.

Her firm words left Cynthia bereft of words as her lips quivered. It was safe to say I was the most surprised of them all.

Was this really the Valeria I knew five years ago?!

My heart drummed frantically in my chest like a hailstorm as I struggled to process the scene before me.

This woman, who had barged into the conference room, was nothing like my ex-wife. And yet, why couldn't I ignore the strange, nagging feeling brewing inside of me, pulling me toward her?

"Shall we begin then?" My secretary's voice pierced through my thoughts, snapping at the urgency at hand. He turned on the projector and approached the whiteboard with some files securely placed in his hands.

We had a deal to finalize.

I couldn't wait to get this over and done with. Perhaps I should talk with her? She should have the answers to the puzzling questions swirling inside of me.
