Chapter 21: THE DINNER

The restaurant was a stark contrast to the tension I felt as I walked through the door. Dimly lit with soft jazz playing in the background, it seemed like the perfect setting for a quiet evening, but tonight it was anything but serene.

Daniel was already seated when I arrived, his back straight and his gaze fixed on the window. He looked up as I approached, a smirk playing at his lips. I took my seat across from him, trying to mask the unease settling in my stomach.

"Emily," Daniel greeted, his voice smooth but carrying an edge. "I'm glad you could make it."

"Let's just get this over with," I replied, taking a sip of water to steady my nerves.
