Alexia’s POV
I read the paper in the file and my eyes widened in shock. I looked up at Ethan who had a face devoid expression as he stared right back at me. “Wh….what is this?” I stuttered as I asked him. “What does it look like?” Ethan cocked his head to the side and replied to me. His expression slowly turned into one of amusement but I didn’t find anything amusing in this situation. I looked back at the file to make sure I wasn’t seeing things but the words were as clear as day and they weren’t an illusion. MARRIAGE CONTRACT BETWEEN ETHAN BLACKWOOD AND ALEXIA THOMPSON The bold heading swarmed before my eyes. This couldn’t be real, a contracted marriage? How was this going to solve anything? What was Ethan playing at? Did he want to use my moment of weakness to finally get what he wanted from me? So many questions swirled around my head and my composure vanished. I continued reading and my eyes fell on the clauses on the contract. The contract outlined a series of clauses that made me wonder when on earth Ethan even had the time to draft this thing. The first clause stipulated a marriage of convenience that would last for three years. During this time I would be Ethan’s legal spouse, entitled to all benefits that came with the title – shared finances, access to exclusive health care plans, and even the right to reside in his luxurious manor. The Blackwood manor. A separate clause dispelled any notion of a romantic union which left me very confused. I had thought that he was doing this just to get intimate with me but this clause scratched that assumption from my head. I continued reading the clause and it clearly stated that the marriage would be strictly platonic but public display of affection would be allowed to give the impression of a happy marriage. I read the next clause and my eyes widened in shock. It was a financial clause, a hefty sum, enough to settle the embezzled funds and leave me with a comfortable nest egg, which would be deposited into a trust account upon signing the contract. However, access to the funds would be restricted until the three-year term agreement was complete, and a single step out of line would result in the forfeiture of the entire amount. I continued reading the document and a clause that outlined a communication plan where Ethan would have to know where I was at all times. There was another clause titled “Confidentiality Agreement” which stated that I would never tell anyone about this contract and its existence. There was one particular clause that caught my eye and it made me a bit furious. I slammed the file on Ethan’s desk and pointed him to a seething gaze. “This is outrageous! I can’t have any romantic interests outside the marriage but there’s nothing about you? Make it make sense” Yes, this clause forbids me from ever finding love outside the marriage as long as the duration of the contract hasn’t run out. “It’s standard for the woman’s reputation to be upheld in a social marriage such as this, Alexia. Appearances are important. “Appearances for whom? You get to waltz around town with some socialite in your arms while I’m stuck playing the dutiful wife?” My voice trembled as I voiced my complaints out “Socialite? Hardly. Anything I’d do would be discreet. Besides, you are the public face. Any more scandal like this then it’ll be over for you. I put that clause in there to protect you.” Ethan said in a convincing tone. I fell into silence as I contemplated my choices. I was about to sign away my freedom but what choice did I have? It was either this or a trip to the nearest jail cell. I sighed as I decided to just accept it and get it over with. But before I would voice my agreement, I have one more question to ask. “Ethan.” I began staring right into his forest-green eyes. “When did you get this document set up? I can’t believe you would do this just to help me. You must have your gain in this.” Ethan stared back at me and let out a ghost of a smile on his face. “I have always known you are a smart woman. Well since you figured it out then there’s no harm in telling you.” Ethan leaned forward as he began to explain. “As you know I am the Heir to my father. The CEO of Blackwood Enterprises. My father is about to step down and I would naturally be the next heir but...” He paused, his gaze holding mine. “I can’t inherit this company until I meet certain conditions, one of which is to get married. I don’t have the time to fall in love and I’m not about to marry any of the gold diggers that flock around me like bees to honey. You, Alexia, was the perfect woman for this.” “Think about it, Alexia. This marriage is a chance for both of us. A chance for you to clear your name and secure your financial future. A chance for me to fulfill a lifelong dream – to take control of Blackwood enterprises." It finally made sense. The reason behind this contract marriage. It was a marriage of convenience, not just to save me but to secure his ambitions. The situation was far more complex than I had ever imagined but the only thing on my mind was how to clear my name. “I have a request, Ethan. You know I didn’t do this, someone must have done this. Someone in this company had access to my info. I need your help in tracking them down, if you can promise me this then I’ll agree to this marriage.” I gritted my teeth and said to Ethan. I was feeling very wronged and I wanted to find this culprit and put him or her behind bars. Ethan gazed at me for a moment before he nodded his head. I sighed with relief and took the pen on his desk, taking up the file. I stared at the free box meant for my signature and after a slight hesitation. I signed on the empty box signalling my agreement to this marriage.Alexia’s POVA look of satisfaction crossed Ethan’s face as I signed the contract. I handed the contract papers back to him and he accepted the file and placed it on his desk carefully like it was some lottery ticket.“Good decision, Alexia. You won’t regret this.” Ethan said as he leaned back on his chair and steepled his fingers. “Now about these embezzlement charges. I believe in your innocence Alexia, there’s no way you could have done this, I have worked with you for years now and I don’t know you to be the materialistic type. Which is why I will have a discreet investigator look into your case. Someone who won’t raise any alarms within the company.”I sighed with relief. Ethan believed me and that was all that mattered. I believed with Ethan on my side, I could have a chance of clearing my name. “How will that clear my name?” I asked curious to know about Ethan’s plan.“Let’s just say there might be ....irregularities in the accounting department. Discrepancies that could cas
Ethan’s POVA content smile spread across my face as Alexia left the room. This was it, I would finally get what was rightfully mine from my insufferable old man. The kind of rules that man set are just so damn hilarious. I mean I could understand the rules he set in place but why on earth would he include marriage as a necessity? I mean who does that these days? I had already proven to be a worthy heir to the company but he insisted I must settle down before I could think about inheriting the company as the new CEO.Marriage wasn’t an issue; even though I wasn’t feeling the idea of being with a single person for the rest of my life, if I had to get married out of necessity then I would. The real problem, however, was the ladies that flocked around me. All of them, the whole lot of them were a bunch of gold diggers heavily intent on spending my money. Unluckily for them, they end up falling in love with me and they expect a lifelong commitment after I’ve seen their true colours. Th
Alexia’s POVOne week later I sat in the bridal suite surrounded by the soft glow of candles and the sweet scent of flowers. This was it, today was the day I would be married to Ethan. My pure white wedding dress hugged my curves in all the right places, it felt like it was tailored just for me. The lace details sparkled like diamonds against the ivory silk, and the veil cascaded down my back like a river of moonlight. It was simply an expensive work of art.I couldn’t believe he had sent this two days before the wedding. I had already decided to use my mother’s wedding gown when he sent this with a simple note that read: This would suit you perfectly. He wasn’t wrong, it wasn’t too tight and it wasn’t too loose. It was just perfect.I glanced at the mirror at my right to stare at my reflection. My makeup was applied with a light hand just as I requested. My red hair was styled in a chic low bun that showcased my bare neck.Tears misted over my eyes as I began to think about the c
Alexia's POV“I object to this wedding! Alexa is a fraud and she has bewitched Ethan” A beautiful brunette with the body of a model declared vehemently, eyes flashing with barely restrained rage as she walked to the front”I was shocked by her allegations since I am quite sure I have never met or spoken to her before. Turning away from the intruder, I met Ethan's gaze, quietly asking him to explain what in the world is going on here and why is there a stranger accusing me of being a fraud!“Alexia please calm down, I will handle this! Just give me a minute to seek this out” he whispered to me, and with a louder voice, “If you would excuse me for ten minutes Father, I would like to sort out this misunderstanding” he said addressing the Priest, who in turn nodded his understanding.“I should come with you”“That won't be necessary! You just wait here, I will be back before you know it” Without waiting for my response, he strode off to meet with the strange lady, who had been joined b
Ethan's POVThe reception party was in full swing, people dancing and everyone celebrating while I stood in a corner completely mesmerized by Alexia's beauty. I knew that gown would look perfect on her the moment the stylist I paid to get the dress, sent a picture to me. It hugged her beautiful curves in an addictive way and brought out her hair color. She was so engrossed in dancing with her brothers that it felt like she was the only one there, the way her body moved with reckless abandon. This is the first time I've seen her act so carefree. I wished I was the one dancing with her. I know the whole getting married to me so abruptly is still difficult to process, I practically gave the poor girl an ultimatum. Marriage or prison. I don't know what my mother and Lisa's plan was. Like why would they think it was smart to try and disrupt the wedding? I need to apologize to Alexia when we finally get some alone time.I get tired of watching her dance because I'd rather she dances with me
Alexia's POV The drive to the Blackwood mansion started quiet and depressing. I had a lot of doubts in my mind. From leaving my brothers alone to moving in with his family knowing how much they dislike me. I must look like an opportunistic gold-digger to them and I don't want to think about myself in that light.I thought it would continue being depressing but luckily for me Ethan noticed my mood and tried to cheer me up. I can't deny the fact that his method of cheering me up worked. I would say being a playboy made him have such a good way with words.Despite Ethan being a well-known playboy, I know he is a good person. I have worked with him for years and even though he has tried to flirt with me multiple times after I drew the line he stopped. He didn't become mean or anything, he just stopped trying to get me into his bed except for the occasional jokes he'd make. Now look at us, together. Married too but not in love. Never, Ethan and love can't be put in the same sentence. We f
Alexis's POVI wake up feeling slightly refreshed but still very much exhausted. I search for my phone and see it's still 4 am. I look at the other side of the bed where I can't help but notice Ethan's absence.I don't even think he slept here last night but I can't think of where else he would be. Out with his other women! That nagging voice screamed in my head. I shouldn't care what Ethan does with his life; the contract gave him that much liberty but I can't help but feel slightly annoyed. Like couldn't he wait one more day before trying to get away from me?I sigh in frustration. This is not the married life I dreamed for myself but then like earlier stated I had dreams and this is the hard cold reality.I drag myself from the bed to get into the ensuite bathroom. Perks of being married to a billionaire I suppose. I take a nice long relaxing shower that helps calm my nerves. After that, I feel much more refreshed and ready to take on whatever the day has for me. I walked out of th
One week later…Alexia’s POVIt’s been a week, and one thing I can say with full confidence is that I hate being married to Ethan. The funny part is Ethan isn’t even the real problem. The problem I have is his family. They find new ways to make me uncomfortable.Mr. Blackwood has barely said ten words to me which is at least better than his wife who never misses an opportunity to insult me. I think the highlight of it for me was the day I tried to do something nice and cook for the family. This woman spat in my food. I remember what she said like it happened just yesterday. That is because it did happen yesterday, silly. My inner voice mocks me.My mother-in-law said, “This is the biggest abomination I have ever tasted. Can you do anything useful at all?” her words stung more than I’d care to admit. Ethan had said absolutely nothing to defend me. His father remained silent while Mrs. Blackwood dropped insult after insult on me. I don’t know what I did wrong to this woman except for ma
Alexia’s POV “I don't want the pink dress. I want to put on the blue dress.” Amy pouted, shifting away from the pink dress like she found it offensive. My little girl looks beautiful with her red hair, Ethan's blue eyes, and a face so perfect “The pink dress is better and it brings out your eyes.” I tried reasoning with my 2-year-old daughter.Today is Allen and Amy's 2 years birthday and Ethan and I are throwing a party for them. The others will soon be here and Amy is still delaying us further.“No mummy. Blue is better because it's the color of my daddy's eyes. I rolled my eyes at her, not surprised by her response. Everything is always about Ethan, to say that my little girl and Ethan are close would be putting it mildly. I have been having this dress argument with her for the past 10 minutes and I'm about to insist she puts on the dress when Ethan walks into Amy's room.“Daddy!” Amy squealed excitedly as she ran at Ethan. I smiled ruefully as I watched Ethan pick up Amy and th
Ethan's POV “Look at my handsome grandson. Isn't he the cutest baby ever?” Mom cooed as she bent over our baby boy sleeping peacefully in his crib. A small smile played on my lips. I haven't seen her this excited in a very long time.“Yeah, he certainly is.” Dad, who is also standing behind her, agreed. “If only that dumb skull over there would allow us to see our granddaughter!” He added drily, shooting a furious glare at me. “I am not letting anyone near my princess, just yet. She needs to spend quality time with her daddy.” I repeated for the hundredth time today, scowling at my Dad and Mom. Just before they could retort, the door to our hospital room was pushed open and Nathan, Ryan, Stacey, and Grace walked into the room.“Great, the entire crew is here!” I grumbled surly. Amelia shoots me a dark look.“Ethan, be nice! They are here to celebrate with us and see the newest members of the family.” I shrugged. I know I was being an ass but can anyone blame me for wanting some alon
Alexia POV. “Come on Alexia, just one more push.” my doctor said for what must be the 20th time. “That’s what you said the last twenty times.” I groaned, glaring at the doctor. I know she is just doing her job but I can't help but feel frustrated. I have been in labor for the past thirty minutes and I still haven't pushed out a baby. I can feel my body tiring and the pain is like nothing I have ever felt before. “Darling just one more! I know you can do it.” Ethan who has been beside me this whole time said, still holding my hand. He looks just as frazzled as I look. I had the irrational urge to laugh as I stared at his rumpled look, imagining the reaction of his staff if they could see their prim and proper CEO looking anything but prim. As I imagined their faces, a fit of hysterical laughter burst out of me as both the doctor and Ethan exchanged twin looks of confusion, probably wondering if I had finally lost it, which just made me laugh harder. A high-pitched cry suddenly c
Alexia’s POV “You are the reason we are late for this dinner! So be ready to handle your mom's complaint.” I said, shooting an accusing look at Ethan as he helped me out of the car.“Don't worry! You can blame me, you can blame me.” He was laughing. I struggled to hold on to my anger as the laughter I had been holding on tried to bubble up at his playfulness. I love Ethan's playful side. It's a side very few people are privileged to see.He took my hand in his ass and ushered me into the mansion. The dining room was as grand as I remembered but it still looked cold and sterile. Our dining room isn't as big and grand as this but I will pick it over this one anytime, any day because of the warmth it exudes. The long table was elegantly set with silverware, crystal glasses, and ivory candles that cast a warm glow across the room. At one end, Ethan’s mom was already fussing over the placements, rearranging flowers and adjusting napkins, her excitement barely contained. As we entered the
Ethan's POV “Gentlemen, I think what you guys have come up with is good but if we want to truly broaden our space in France we could do better than this.” I said viewed the projections on the screen.I leaned back on my chair. One of the benefits of being the CEO is that you are privileged to sit at the head of the table and take in the reaction of your team. I noticed that at more comment some of my team members nodded their agreement while some were still frowning like they don't totally agree with me, which is actually okay by me. I am comfortable enough in my space to allow dissenting opinions so long as the reasons are good. In my view it helps in business.Liam lifted his eyes to meet mine like he was about to say something and just as I was about to tell him to go ahead, my phone buzzed quietly on the table. I glanced down, and a small smile tugged at my lips when I saw it was Alexia's name flash on the screen. This one she is calling me in the middle of work, she must be m
Alexia’s POV I thought about all I had learned this morning as I approached Nathan’s office. What she had found was more complicated than she’d anticipated, and she knew she needed Nathan’s support to get to the bottom of it.I tapped lightly on the frosted glass door, hearing the muffled “Come in” from inside. Taking a deep breath, I stepped in, finding Nathan behind his desk, absorbed in his computer screen, closing the door behind me, as I walked up to his desk. The sound of the door closing, jolted him as he looked up in surprise, his eyes lighting up when he saw her.“You are back so soon?” He asked, sounding surprised.I smiled at him. “Yes, at least for now. I have spoken to a few of your staff, and I think I will speak to the others later. I don't want to rush things so whoever is responsible wouldn't suspect we are unto him or her.Nathan raised an eyebrow, interest immediately piqued. “Did you find anything from the few of them you spoke with?”I nodded, settling into th
Alexia’s POV I munch on the apple Elsie placed in my front earlier. I feel restless as I sit here just eating food and watching TV. I wonder how those stay-at-home moms do it. I envy them because these past couple of weeks off work have me feeling antsy and restless. Our sitting room which was bathed in a soft, afternoon light, with the faint scent of her favorite lavender candle lingering in the air, would usually cheer me up a bit, but today the reverse was the case.I was just reaching for the fashion magazine Stacey brought when she came to visit last week when my phone buzzed.Seeing Nathan’s name flash on the screen, I answered with a calm voice, trying to hide the surprise I felt. This should be the first time I am getting a call from him. "Hey, Nathan! What’s up?""Alexia, sorry to call out of the blue like this," he began, his tone unusually serious. “I know you are on bed rest and shouldn't be doing any work, which is why I feel like shit calling you, but I have exhausted
Ethan's POV I leaned back in my chair, my sharp gaze fixed on the report in front of me. For the umpteenth time, I wish Alexia was here to help me with this. Fielding reports was her area of expertise, not mine.I glared at the series of financial graphs glowing from my tablet screen, if only I could magically wish them away, thought, sighing deeply.Despite the report's importance, my mind was elsewhere. I rubbed a hand across my jaw, lost in thought, wondering if I should take a rare moment off and spend some time with his wife.I have been on these reports for the past two hours and I haven't made much of a progress.Just when I was about to push the report aside and take some much-needed break, my phone rang, jolting me from his reverie. Dad's name flashed like a beacon on the screen and a flicker of surprise coursed through me. I certainly wasn't expecting a call from him. He seldom called unless it was about business.“Dad,” I answered, my voice sounding professional, though w
Ethan's POV I picked up my suit jacket from the back of the chair I had hung it earlier, ready to call it in. It's been one hell of a day filled with a series of meetings. I had barely catch my breath since I got back from my visit with Ken.As I strode out of my office, locking the door behind me, I noticed the lobby was nearly empty, which isn't strange seeing as I am almost always the last to leave the office. Chloe had gone home about an hour ago.I walked through the main hall keeping my stride calm but purposeful.I know looked more relaxed than heI had in the series of meetings as if I was shedding the CEO mantle with each step toward the exit.I took the elevators to the down floor today. I want to conserve the little energy I have left because I intend to play some fun games with Alexia when I get home. I already anticipated the thrill of playing with her would be elicited inside.Stepping out from the elevator I strolled to where my car was parked outside and opened the p
