The soft chiming of an alarm pulled Charlotte awake, rolling over onto her side, she quickly grabbed the clock and dismissed the alarm before it had a chance to wake anyone else in the house. It was still early, the world pitch black and still in these hours before daylight, but Charlotte could not be still, there were too many things that needed to be done if today was to go as planned. Bringing her feet to the floor she stood up and turned on the only light in the room, an old lamp without a shade perched on the edge of her faded oak dresser. She stretched her tired body and gazed bleary eyed at her reflection in the mirror, somewhat disappointed, she found the same face staring back at her that she had always had. A smile broke across her face suddenly, lighting up her face and making her bright green eyes sparkle because it hit her that today WAS different. Today was the day she’d been waiting on for years. After today she wouldn’t have to stay in this house, this town or even this state another day.... she just had to get away first.
-Charlotte POV-
This house...This house has been my home for all of my life. Somewhere between a castle and a mansion, the pack house was as much a fortified defensive structure as it was a luxurious home. Designed for housing the current Alpha, Beta and their families,as well as all their designated guards and even some of the other pack members as needed, the mansion was also the center of our pack operations and had rooms for all the administrative offices and even a large ballroom that was used for celebrations. Up until I was three years old this place had been my refuge, I had lived a charmed life surrounded by warm loving people who only ever made me feel safe and adored. As the only child of a well loved and respected Alpha and Luna, I remember carefree days of playing in the gardens with my mother and sneaking into the kitchens for treats from the cooks. We may not have kings in our world, but that didn’t stop our pack from treating me like their little princess.
That all changed the day a massive rogue attack hit us without warning. My father died that day defending our home and pack mates from the attack, by charging in to save a young boy who’d gotten cornered by a rogue warrior knowing he’d have to sacrifice himself in the process to save a life. As my mother felt the life leave her mate, she let out a soul shattering wail and ran grief stricken out into the battle, blinded by her grief, she was killed before she could even reach his body. How do i know all of this? because I had watched it all from a window of an upper story of the pack house. The images of my dying parents were etched into memory so deeply that I can replay every last second of their lives in perfect detail even after all these years.
In the end our warriors were able to beat the rogues back, but from that day on my life would change. My uncle Eric had been away visiting another pack the day of the attack because as my father’s only brother, and his beta, he often made diplomatic visits in his stead on behalf of the pack. It took several days for my uncle to get back to us, upon returning he found us broken and grieving our heavy losses, while desperately trying to save our wounded and secure our defenses in case the rogues returned. In those first days and the following weeks he played on the pack members' fear, insisting that if only he’d been there to protect the pack, my father would still be alive, that all their loved ones would still be alive. I knew better, my father had been a strong alpha, much stronger than my uncle could ever hope to be, but as a child I had no voice and the pack voted to elect my uncle as their new alpha. My Uncle made me his ward shortly after, not for love of his brother, or any other noble reason you might think of. No, he had kept me and raised me, using me as a servant and forcing me to be his daughter’s personal maid. By flaunting my miserable existence, he used me as an example for others of what could happen without his protection. Over time he made many changes to pack law, giving himself and those loyal to him more control. My uncle used that control to systematically replace all of my fathers loyal men with his own cronies, who like him relished instilling fear in people and used constant threats of violence to maintain control over the pack.
After changing into my clothes for the day and straightening my bedroom, I looked around me carefully. I had to make sure everything seemed as normal as any other day for my plan to slip away to work. I made a mental inventory of all the small trinkets I was forced to leave behind, reminding myself they were sacrifices necessary to making my plan work, stepping back. I said my goodbye to my small space, it was barely more than a closet, but it was still my home. Knowing my aunt and cousins would be checking in on me and would surely be alerted if anything seemed out of place, or if they found any chore undone on my list of daily demands. I headed out to start the day’s work. They were always looking for any excuse to get me in trouble with my uncle, they relished watching him dole out punishments to me, it was their favorite form of entertainment.. I knew if my Uncle thought for a moment that I intended to leave he would place me under heavy guard because lock me away. While he could never dispose of me without causing alarm, he’d never allow me the freedom to live happily either. He’d been clear on that point, he needed me to be miserable, and he’d succeeded. I’d been a lonely outcast my whole life, lost to the people who could have brought me comfort and joy all because they were too afraid to displease my uncle.
Today wasn’t just a special day for me however, today was the day the new Alpha from the snow moon pack was due to arrive. The whole pack had been preparing for his arrival for weeks now, and with all of them focused on his visit i don’t think anyone even notices me moving about. Tradition dictates that unless an Alpha finds his goddess given mate before his 23rd birthday they are to choose a mate from the daughters of an alpha of a foreign pack,a pact designed to ensure peace between the ruling families and to keep the bloodlines strong. A wolf finding their mate had become so rare that most didn’t even believe in the bond anymore, and many alphas barely waited before choosing a luna. This Alpha from the north, the infamous Cole Hale- was rumored to be stunningly beautiful as well as the most powerful wolf to have been born in a thousand years, but he was also said to be as cold and unforgiving as the ice that surrounds their lands. Not yet 23, like so many others he had already begun meeting with the daughters of ruling alphas, making it clear he would waste no time in choosing his luna. My Uncle couldn’t be more thrilled at the possibility of an alliance, of course he didn’t think about what kind of a life he’d be throwing one of his daughters into, no - all he cared about was forging ties to the most powerful alpha alive, so he could exploit the man's status and gain more power for himself.
I couldn’t care less about the visiting alpha, it was my cousins that he was coming to see. The worst of my cousins, and older than me by a couple months, Mara had been talking of nothing else for weeks now, planning how she would seduce him with her beauty and convince him to take her as his bride. I could only hope for his sake the poor man was smart enough not to fall into that trap. Whether or not she succeeded in snatching the man, I didn't plan on being around long enough to find out. With everyone focused on the visiting ruler it was the perfect time for me to make a run for it, I just had to get through one more day, and tonight while they were distracted I would set myself free from this place.
Cole closed his eyes and pinched the skin between his nose in annoyance. Mara, the eldest daughter of the shadow river pack was seated next to him at the table, and shamelessly kept pressing herself against him while she chatted about anything and everything that came into her head without pause. How was she still talking, did she not need to breathe? He asked himself, she was beautiful, no doubt. Her skin was a deep brown and her long flowing dark hair reached to her dainty waist, her brown eyes were large in her delicate features. Cole chided himself, what does beauty matter? I’ve seen beautiful women before, and many beautiful women had offered themselves to me. I've even taken more than a few of them up on those offers, only to find after the pleasures of the night were over I felt nothing for them. How can I help it if in my entire life no woman has ever managed to hold my interest for more than a few hours, or
“Did you see a woman come this way Alpha? Our Alpha’s ward has gone missing.” one of them asked. So that’s who she was, his ward. He remembered hearing something about this alpha keeping a young girl under his care, but what kind of man needs to send guards to find his ward? What has he done to her that would make her feel the need to run away? The thought of anyone mistreating her made his blood boil. “No, I've been alone since I left the dinner your Alpha rudely left me waiting at.” Cole responded, allowing his rage over her mistreatment and irritation at their interruption to reach his eyes, the displeasure on his face a clear warning to them that he should not be pressed further. “Apologies sir, we will continue our search.. elsewhere.” stammered what he assumed must be the officer among them, while turning and motioning his men to follow him as he proceeded back inside.
Charlotte had been running all night, after escaping the pack house she just kept moving, as silently as possible through the woods towards the border of their territory, she drew upon as much of her wolf as she could without shifting. She needed all the energy she could save for once she was off pack lands. “Come on lottie, it can’t be much farther now” she coached herself. It was shortly after dawn when she came to the border, moving through it felt like a small electrical buzz clinging to her skin as she passed, snapping like spider’s webs around her. The border was put up long ago by a witch. It had two purposes, when humans came near it would play on their fears and make them feel afraid so they would not trespass and discover them accidentally and the other purpose was to alert the alpha of any unauthorized coming or going on his lands. My Uncle now knew someone had crossed the border in this spot, and th
It had been weeks since seeing the girl and still my body and mind were in complete chaos. To say finding a mate was uncommon would be an understatement, Unlike the old days very very few wolves ever found their mate anymore, but there was no doubt in my mind now, those green eyes of hers that were haunting all my dreams could only belong to one person - my mate. Now that I'd found her she was all that I could think about. Not knowing where she was or if she was potentially in danger? Had my wolf screaming in my head to be let loose, we were both desperate to find her. Lashing out my fist connected with a tree with a sickening thud. I had wasted no time in returning home after concluding things with the sun shadow pack’s disgusting excuse for an alpha and put every available resource I had into searching for her. “I want her FOUND” I snarled in frustration “there MUST be a way”.
Charlotte wrapped herself tighter in her blanket, glad she’d bought thing even if it was a pain to pack around everywhere. After 16 days of travel, she found herself this morning sitting on a beach somewhere in the northwest watching the reflection in the waves as the sun came up behind her.. “Ok lottie, what's the plan now” she wondered aloud. The money I'd saved had run out days ago, luckily I'd managed to hitchhike this far and beg a few meals from strangers along the way. When I arrived in this cute coastal town yesterday evening I fell in love with it immediately. It had an old world charm about it, the buildings were old but well cared for, all painted in shades of white, with each building accented brightly in a different color, the whole town seemed to be cascading in a multitude of flowers, overflowing from balconies and windows, winding up lamp posts along the street. After wandering the town an
Elle sat patiently while I devoured the food she’d given me, smiling as she brought me a second glass of lemonade. I'd drained the first before I'd even sat down at the table. “Been a long time since someone has enjoyed something I cooked so much, most i get out of Sam these days is a grunt or two”. “Who’s Sam?” i asked between bites “Oh Sam is my Mate, we found each other nearly 40 years ago now. That's why I live out here away from my pack, my Sam is a human, and my alpha just couldn’t accept that.” “A human?” I asked, my shock strong enough to take precedence over the food “ I didn’t know that was even possible!” “Oh it is” she chuckled, “the mate bond is about who they are, not what they are” she said with the patience of someone who’s had this same conversation a whole lot over the years. “Well...that’s just garbage. Findi
Cole was pacing again. After the trail had gone cold a week ago I’d given up waiting for my people to find my mate for me. In a fit of frustration I had driven out to her last known location hoping I'd be able to pick up on something they hadn’t. I’d found nothing, not even the tiniest hint of her scent even lingered, it was like she was never here. I should have known better, my people were the best, and if they hadn’t found anything then there was nothing to be found. A gnawing feeling had taken up residence in my gut, and the longer I was away from her the worse it got. I was barely sleeping these days, day and night my wolf was howling in my head for his mate, his desperation was only feeding my anxiety. Not knowing was tearing me apart. I needed to let my wolf out, I'd been holding back afraid of what would happen if I let that side of myself free. I had never gone this long without shifting, constantly battling myself wasn’t helping anything. I’d read som
I sat quietly while Sam drove, unsure what I could say to the gruff woman that would lighten the mood in the cab of the old truck. Sam and Elle’s place was a few miles outside of the main part of town and I spent the ride looking at the houses that were nestled back into the hillsides and cliffs along the ocean’s edge. I loved the way the trees seemed grow by clinging onto the rocks and how they were shaped by the coastal storms, it was all so vastly different from lands I had grown up on. I found myself enthralled by the smallest things, a peek of the ocean as we turn a corner, the bright pinks of the flowers that seemed to grow everywhere, fishermen going about their day working on the docks, my eyes ate up the details. As we came into town, I tried to pay attention to the streets we were passing, their names and the businesses on them, so I could build a mental map of my new home. It was difficult, the uniformity of the white buildings that made the town look s
When Alpha Cole finally left, I shut the door behind him and threw the lock. I turned to stare at my now vacant living space, with him here the small space had felt almost suffocating, that man had a way of sucking up everything around him, consuming my reality until only he existed. Dear goddess, what was I thinking agreeing to meet him again tomorrow! In less than 12 hours he’d caused so much emotional upheaval the only thing I should be doing is avoiding him at all costs. He went from insinuating I was a whore, to defending me from someone else calling me names? The hypocrisy made my head hurt. He had apologized for what he said -something I’d never heard an alpha do before. While he was here in my apartment he did seem like he was genuinely concerned about me, but why was that? It was all so confusing, I didn’t know how to feel or what to think about any of the events that had happened today.I brushed my teeth and slipped into my pajamas, pulling
I stared in shock at her. Those big green eyes were wide and pleading, and for the first time I could see all the hurt inside her. I made a silent vow to her then, I was going to make her uncle pay for every second of pain she’d ever endured because of him, I was going to make him feel every ounce of humiliation and loneliness, everything she’d felt I’d give to him tenfold.“I’m not going to force you to go anywhere.” I said softly, surprising myself at the gentleness of my voice, inside I was seething “I just wanted to apologize for my behavior earlier, and to make sure you were alright.”“An alpha... apologize? That’s unheard of.” She said in disbelief“Not with this alpha.” I chuckled softly “I do my best, but I still make mistakes sometimes, and when I do I apologize and do my best to learn from them.” I took a slow step towards her, closing some of the distance between
“Did you see the way that slut looked at him? Apparently she’s as stupid as I thought, so easily distracted by the biggest muscles in the room. I have been coming in here and watching her pathetic ass for the last few weeks. I was about to give in and just give the poor girl the pity fuck she needs until she came back looking like that, now she’s only worth a blow job.” His words slashed across my mind like razors, cutting and slicing as they fell from his lips. I would not have heard him from how far we were across the street if I were human, too bad for him I wasn’t. Rage fueled me as I moved across the street with the kind of speed and grace humans could only dream of. Before the cocky kid could even finish coughing his lungs out from his last hit off of the pipe they were passing around I gave him a hit of my own; square on his jaw. As I watched him fall to the ground unconscious, chaos erupted around me. One of the other four in the group tried to shove me
I stormed past the bar, making eye contact with Sam as I walked past, by the look in her eyes I could tell she was concerned for me, but if I explained everything now, I knew I would turn into and emotional crying mess. “I need ten minutes.” I said a little more stiffly than I would have liked, Sam did not deserve attitude from me, but I was so white hot mad it just leaked out into my words. Sam being Sam, she just nodded and let me go. I made my way out the back door to the loading dock and went straight up the stairs to my apartment. Only after the door closed behind me did I allow myself to lose my composure a little. I kicked the heels off my feet and halfway across the floor. Stomping barefoot into the bathroom, I grabbed the curls I’d so carefully created and pulled my hair up into a high ponytail instead. Stepping back from the mirror I looked hard at myself. I had been so sure of myself, I had felt so beautiful earlier, now I only felt ashamed. All beca
Shock, panic, and fear ran through me in waves. I was terrified but strangely … excited? What in the Goddesses’ name could possibly bring me face to face with Alpha Cole again so soon? He couldn’t have possibly been following me could he? No. I needed to squash that feeble hope right now, there was no way he was actually here to see me. I was a nobody; it was all just a horrible coincidence… right?I slapped a shaky smile on my face and started towards them, I didn’t know the other wolf at the table, but he had enough power radiating off him for him to be an alpha as well, his aura was certainly stronger than my uncle’s, but still eclipsed by Alpha Cole. There was nobody like Alpha Cole, his presence consumed the room, and even the humans couldn’t help but take note of him and gave him a wide berth. One alpha was bad enough, but two? What could they be here for?Alpha Cole, here and in the flesh, I still couldn’t
It did not take long once we were in town for me to figure out our search for my mate was over. Axle and I had located and stopped in at the town’s grocery shortly after arriving to refill some of our snack supply and her scent was there, all over ever aisle, it was so strong she’d had to have been there within an hour of us. I had followed traces of her scent to the edges of this town last night, I had even circled around it looking for signs of her leaving and had found none. I did not know as of yet where she was hiding, but I was certain of one thing. She was here.We had already checked ourselves into yet another motel, while I admit this one was better than most we had been able to find, after weeks of traveling they were all awful. Goddess I missed my own bed, but I knew I could never truly rest or relax until I knew she was safe, and I had her with me, preferably in my arms. I suppose I might be alarmed at how strong my need to have her was becoming if I h
The next few days blew by in a flurry of activity for me. Every night at The Galley was so busy but working at the bar turned out to be unexpectedly wonderful. I was really enjoying myself, so much so, it hardly even felt like work at all, and the hours flew by. It had taken a little while, but I had managed to charm the locals, and the tourists that came through could be a bit overwhelming at times, but I enjoyed the challenge. George, Sam and I fell into our own routine, I took care of the tables, Sam handled the bar, and George manned the kitchen. When things were slow enough, I spent time behind the bar learning how to mix drinks from Sam. Due to the late hour we got home, I found myself learning to love sleeping in. I’d never been able to sleep as long as I needed, only as long as I was allowed, now I was sleeping in as long as I pleased, waking at some point in the late morning I’d wander about looking for Elle. I did this every morning, but invariably found her
It had taken a couple days for Axle and I to put our low tech plan together, but I was feeling pretty good about it as we drove out town to the western border of the forest. Once we were far enough away from town I found an open spot and parked the Hummer on the side of the road. From there Axle and I started hiking, I hated leaving that car on the side of the road like that, but my priorities had shifted. Once we were far enough away from the road, I quickly stripped down and shifted while Axle pulled our supplies from a bag and crammed my clothes inside “What? Never said I was going to do your laundry too, now here boy let’s put your collar on.” He said with a grin, and a little dog whistle. I was irritated, but since I was in my wolf form, I just huffed at him for his insolence and sat still for him while he put our handiwork around my neck. My “collar” was made from 2 leather belts linked together, we had duct taped a hideous green donut print fanny pack Axle had found onto it,
“You sound as idealistic as Elle did when I first met her. Tell you what, how about we try you out for a few shifts and see how things go, if you’re a good fit for the place I’ll keep ya on and eventually – maybe – I’ll consider going home earlier”“That’s fair, I guess I was getting ahead of myself a bit. I may never have worked in a bar, but I’ve done more than my fair share of serving people. My uncle had me play waitress at all his parties and dinners with visiting alpha’s.”“What on earth makes you want to take this job on then? Won’t it just remind you of all that they put you through?”“That’s exactly why I want to do it. They thought by making me a servant for visiting alphas they were taking my dignity and my self-respect, they robbed me of joining my pack in celebrations and instead made me serve them and watch while everyone else enjoyed themselves to
