Chapter 35

After Olivia left I sat at the table for a bit and thought about the time we shared. My favourite memory was when we got high by accidentally eating weed jelly babies and lying on the trampoline she had in her yard. It was just her and me that night. We spoke about the oddest things and told each other random stories.

We couldn't stop laughing. It was a good time. I smiled and looked up to watch Kiara walk back over to the table. She frowned as she noticed Olivia wasn't around anymore.

"Where's Olivia?" Kiara asked and sat down next to me.

"She had to go," I replied and took Kiara's hands in mine. "Listen, Kiara, the real reason Olivia broke up with us is because of me."

I once promised never to lie to Kiara and lately, I hadn't been true to that. Now I had to tell her the truth no matter what. Whether it will upset her or if I'm trying to make her happy.

"What did you do?"

"I told Olivia that I don't like her the way I like you. That I only want to be with you." I replied and sl

Tuesday was a big day for me. Sue's daughter had arrived yesterday and was coming into the company building later today to meet me before the big ceremony. She didn't give me a time yet so the whole day I was anxious. I tried not to think about the news of my mother and just did what Kiara suggested. Keep busy and keep my mind distracted. I was in my office going through the unofficial draft of the contract to take over the company when the clicking sound of heels walking across the tiles made me look up. The women here bearly wore heels. My heart started racing as I realised Sue’s daughter was probably here. As I shot up, I fixed my tie and quickly ran my hand through my hair. Why was I so nervous? It was just the woman whose son I was pretending to be… “Emily, dear, how wonderful to see you again.” I heard Sue say as I walked out of my office. “Did you have any trouble on the way here?” “I just have to get used to driving on the opposite side of the road now.” The woman replied w

“You are a horrible person. It’s time to grow up and take responsibility for your actions. If you didn’t want children, you should have kept your legs closed or hell used protection. JB and I never asked to be born, you decided to bring us into his world. It’s fucking time you faced the consequences.” I spat and looked down at her tearful eyes.“I want to try to make it up to you. We can start over. Please, Jason.” Emily begged and tried to take my hand in hers.“I can’t forgive what you did.” I shook my head and walked out of the dining room. I could hear Emily crying but forced myself to stay firm. She was in the wrong, right? Then why did I feel so bad?*** The next day, I didn't go to work but Kiara convinced me to still go to the ceremony. It was time to accept the company as my own... to continue the proud Porter name. The ceremony was held in a hall near the business that was usually used for weddings or birthdays. I wore the same suit that I stole to meet Kiara's father. I i

I felt numb as I walked back over to the table. The background applause became muffled and all the lights seemed to blind me. Shit, was I having another panic attack? "Congratulations..." Was all I heard as I placed my award on the table. I could see mouths moving but there was no sound. "Excuse me," I mumbled and my eyes met Kiara's for a second before I walked away. My heart was racing as I walked outside and decided to head towards the benches by the fountain. The sound of the rushing water was all I focused on as I sat down and watched the stars above me twinkle. Fuck. It wasn't long before I felt someone grab onto my arm and turned to see Kiara sit down next to me. "Jason, baby, are you okay?" She softly asked and placed a kiss on my shoulder. I looked at her and slowly shook my head as my eyes filled with tears. "It's okay, come here." She added and pulled me into her arms. Shit. I held onto her like she was my only way to breathe... the stole existence of my life. Her h

Kiara walked back outside while I started the fire. It was late afternoon and the sun had turned a soft pink. She had on a white summer dress with a little red flower pattern. Her hair was done up in a bun with all her makeup washed off. Her glasses were also on as she wrapped her arms around me and watched me finish the fire. "I like this." She remarked and rested the side of her face against my back. "The fire or holding me?" I asked as I spun around and held her face in my hands. "I like us." She smiled and placed her hands over mine. "I like us too." I smiled back and then gave her a kiss. Her soft lips pressed against mine for a bit before she pulled away. "I'll go get the meat. Will you pour us some cool drink?" "Sure, love." I nodded and we walked to the kitchen hand in hand. We spent the rest of the afternoon chatting and braaing. It felt so good just to be here with Kiara... doing something as simple as sitting by a fire. It was strange how I enjoyed all the little th

Later that night, I woke up in a bed that wasn’t the one I fell asleep in. I shot up and looked around. I wasn’t in the same room anymore, either."Kiara?" I yelled and jumped out of bed. There was no reply, and my heart was already starting to race. Instead, I decided to do the logical thing and go investigate where I was. I opened the bedroom door and recognised the house. I was by Sue’s mansion, but how?Muffled voices came from down the hallway, so I decided to head in that direction. The closer I got, the clearer the voices came. One was a woman, and the other was a man. The man’s voice sounded so familiar, like an old memory from my past."What are you talking about?!" The man shouted."I can’t do this anymore. I need to take my happiness into consideration!" The woman replied while crying."Aren’t you happy with me?"After a short pause, the woman responded, "No, I’m not. Maybe if it were just you and me... but with the boys… I just can’t.""They're your sons, Emily! You decide

I woke up the next morning, and the spot Kiara slept in was now empty. I opened my eyes, sat up, and looked around the hospital room. I was alone. Where was Kiara? She would have stayed with me, missed work, slept in an uncomfortable chair, and refused to leave my side. I knew her. So, something serious must have happened to make her leave my room. Worry spread through me as I wondered what was going on. I had to get out of this room.I pulled the drip out of my arm, then swung my leg over the edge of the bed. Pain shot up from the wound, but I gritted my teeth and forced myself to stand up. My body broke into a sweat as the weight on my leg made the pain worse. I had on a hospital gown, which let cold air on areas that were usually covered. I had nothing else on under the gown.I slowly made my way out of the hospital room and used the railing on the side of the wall to make my way to the visitor’s lounge."Sir!" A nurse gasped as she noticed me. "You should be resting." She tried to

With Kiara, wow, we had the best intimate connection. She was the best woman I had ever slept with, and she let me try all sorts of different things. Our sex was wild. Then there was the emotional connection. Her and Lulu debated who knew me better, and even though Lulu would always be my best friend, Kiara was my best friend as well.Kiara and I could spend every day with one another and never get bored. Not to sound cheesy, but she was my soulmate; nothing could convince me otherwise. After crossing the "I love you" line, I knew I wanted to have her next to me for the rest of my life."Okay, what colour are we going for? Silver, gold, rose gold, or what about… this black one?" Lulu asked as she pointed at the platinum black engagement ring with a black diamond. We were ring shopping, and I trusted Lulu's opinion more than my own. I knew I wanted to propose to Kiara. I also knew she had just said "I love you" a few weeks ago, and I didn’t want to rush into things, but hell, I was in

We found parking and watched the first set of cars race as we sat on the bonnet of Kiara’s car. The sound of the revving engines, the tyres drifting against the hard ground, and the crowds screaming made me feel like I was in paradise. Dust blew up and music blasted, making the women swing their hips. My heart raced as I memorised the track that the cars raced on and knew exactly how to race it.When my Dad was still alive, he took JB and me here to practise racing. JB lost interest after the first day, but I begged for him to bring me here every day; it’s where I spent most of my time after school when I stole a car good enough to drift in.Kiara yelled as the cars drove past us, and the woman in the red Volkswagen Polo won. The crowd ran to stand around her car as she climbed out."Yay, I’m so happy she won!" Kiara beamed and grabbed my hand. She then jumped off and ran over to the crowd, pulling me along. We pushed to the front, and the woman who won gave Kiara a massive hug as soo

2 years later...I hadn’t spoken to Kiara since that day. I fell into this dark pit where I was so angry but couldn’t do anything about it. I kept my promise to Allan. I didn’t take revenge. I got justice.I gained proof of the warden's illegal ways and the deals he made with the inmates. I found out he arranged the hit since I was taking my time. My lawyer helped me build a case, and together we got the warden put away for the rest of his life.To be honest, it didn’t make me feel better, but I knew it was all I could do.I couldn’t face Kiara. I refused to read her letters, take her calls, or even see her when she came to visit. For a year, she kept trying, but eventually the letters stopped coming. I just needed time alone. I needed to heal, and I did. I found peace.I even had my sentence reduced. Today I was getting out.“Do you have someone coming to pick you up?” The officer asked as he checked me out at the entrance. He gave me a normal pair of clothes, my secret cell phone, a

Allan stared back at me as his eyes darted across my face.“What does that have to do with me?” He finally asked, which made me run my hand through my hair.“I need to talk to Kiara first before I decide anything.” I shrugged and stepped closer to him. “But I do like you, Allan.” I paused and flicked my eyes down to his lips. “You’re gorgeous. I’m intrigued by you. I want to get to know you more, but I also need you to be able to defend yourself. I won't always be here to protect you.” I paused and touched the side of his face. “I don’t know if it’s just lust or if it could be something more. If you’re willing, I’d like to figure it out together.”Allan’s eyes closed for a brief second as he seeped in the warmth from my hand on his face. I watched his chest rise and fall and felt myself totally mesmerised by him. Kiara was the only other person who had that effect on me. So, for a second, I was scared. I wanted to step back and run away from him, but I knew I would always have that ‘w

Allan took a step closer and looked down at my erection, then up at my lips, then at my eyes.“You didn’t finish.” He mumbled so seductively that it made my cheeks go red.“Oh, uh, it’s fine, man.” I said and made the mistake of flickering my eyes down to his lips, trying to get out of his gaze.Allan then closed the distance between us as he pressed his lips against mine. My body froze as his warm lips stayed on mine for a second or two before my brain kicked in and pushed him back harder than I intended. His back hit the wall as he stared back at me.“What the hell, man?” I hissed as I pushed away from the bed and stepped closer to him. “Are you gay or something?” I demanded and grabbed a hand full of his shirt."Y-yeah, I am.” He stuttered as he looked up at me, frowning. “I just thought I could help you get rid of that erection.”Shit, I don’t know if it was the way he sounded so innocent or the way I hated seeing him frown. This irresistible urge to kiss him flooded my thoughts.

I grunted as I turned around and slid back onto the bottom bunk of the bed. Allan wasn’t my problem. He needed to stand up for himself.Nothing else was said that night. Allan climbed onto the top bunk and, after a while, softly let the tears fall. He thought I was asleep and did it so quietly that no one else would hear. That was the first secret of his I kept.***Weeks turned into months, and I barely spoke to Allan. He stopped sitting at my table, only said a word or two to me in the cell, and was rejected by all the gangs that he started spending a lot of time with the ladies. It made things worse for him. Inmates picked on him for being a bitch and humiliated him whenever the opportunity rose. The kid just took it. It was like he thought he deserved to be beaten up. I tried so hard not to care and just let him be, but shit, a piece of my heart went out to the kid. I couldn’t watch it, so every time I just walked away, I saw the aftermath later on when Allan turned in for lights

The cafeteria was like a stereotypical jail-style cafeteria. Officers stood around while the inmates on kitchen duty served the rest of us on a plastic plate. It smelled of dirty cooking oil and rotting food that was stuck between the planks of the tables. Whoever was on cleaning duty never cared enough to clean properly, but heck, we were in jail. No one puts in that much effort. Everything was given the bare minimum.Klip and I grabbed our plates and stood in line, a spoonful of what looked like vomit piling onto the plate. Boiled cabbage stew first, then rice on top. I glared at the inmate serving me, and he quickly stood up straight and apologised. Fuck, who added rice last, this fucking idiot? I rolled my eyes and walked over to the table closest to the door."Uh, Jay isn’t this…" Klip asked behind me but decided to rather shut up as I sat down.He hesitated but sat down next to me as well. I mixed the rice and stew together, then glanced up as footsteps approached. Donnie stoppe

The first few months in jail were the worst. The inmates tested me. I was beat up; I beat some of them up... I had to prove myself and show how tough I could be. Eventually, I knocked out enough inmates to make the others back off and stop messing with me.I had so much time to just think about everything and sort out my mind. I started reading, working out, and even got a tattoo of Kiara’s name on my chest. I quickly had to learn how to bargain and do certain favours for the wardens and powerful inmates. There were a bunch of gangs formed in the jail, and all of them tried to win me over, but I refused all of their offers and kept to myself. I made sure I was respected by everyone and even made friends with the officers. I liked being the middle man.For two years, I had my own cell and was mostly left alone to do my own thing. From all the working out, I had muscles and grew super strong. I looked great and was no longer that skinny, awkward man that Kiara fell in love with. Heck,

3 days later..."Jason, you have been linked to multiple thefts and charged with possession of an illegal firearm. Not to mention that the judge still needs to decide if killing Ricardo was self-defense. We're looking at multiple life charges already." The lawyer sighed and shook his head before he added, "I suggest you agree to plead guilty." I looked away from him and out the window, where I saw Kiara impatiently waiting on the engine of her car. I had been held at the local police station since the whole Ricardo shooting incident. 3 days and 2 nights without sex. Shit. Kiara would come visit every day and demand that I be released. She caused such a commotion that she was not banned from entering the station while I was being held. I could have left... I was offered bail until the court date, but I refused to let Sue, JB, or even Kiara pay it. Maybe I wanted to punish myself for all the crimes I committed. The real punishment wasn't sleeping on a bench or staying in a cell; it wa

I felt my feet hit the hard dirt and could hear the other two vehicles speeding towards us. My neck hurt, and my head was pounding. I tried my best to walk forward, but I stumbled, which made Kiara wrap her arms around my waist to help support me."Come on, baby." Kiara said as we started to walk away from the crash. "I don't know where we're going, but I know we just need to keep moving." "Wait, wait." I stopped her and looked back at the crush. "My gun is under the seat. I need to get it." "I'll get it; stay here." Kiara demanded and left me to run back to the van. I bent down and put my hands on my knees, which helped stop my head from spinning. Soon Kiara was back and handed me the gun, which I slipped into my pocket. "Okay, let's go." I grabbed Kiara's hand, and we started jogging off.I kept looking back as the car stopped and the boss and his men ran after us on foot, as there were many large boulders and trees, which meant they couldn't take the vehicles. It was also getti

The sky was lit with colours of pink, red and orange. A soft breeze blew and stirred up dust into the air. The land was filled with small shrubs, cacti, dry grass and sand. It was like everything around us went in slow motion. I had time to describe every detail of Axels face, and how his body hit the ground. He landed face first with his eyes still open while his blood seeped into the sand. His arms were at his side and his knees bent to the side. He didn't breathe, he didn't blink, he didn't move. Even when Kiara screamed his name and wind flew dust towards us. He wasn't bothered. He just lay there. Then suddenly everything went back to normal speed as another shot went off and hit one tire of the van, making it sink down to the rim. My body jerked into motion as I grabbed Kiara and pulled her behind the side of the van, incase the sniper tried to shoot us. "Stay here, Kiara!" I yelled and looked from her tearing eyes to peek around the door to see where the sniper shot from."
