Weeks later, Noah found himself alone in the boardroom of one of his London hotels.
Lost in his own thoughts as he gazed out the window. Everyone else had already left the room. As he sat there, deep in thought, the door suddenly swung open, and his personal assistant, Jarrod, walked in. Noah remained unaware of Jarrod’s presence until his name was called multiple times. “Noah.” Jarrod said again. Noah swung around to face Jarrod, who had a frown on his face at Noah’s lack of awareness. “What is it?” “Sorry to disturb you. Ryan Hawkins is on line two.” Jarrod told him before backing out of the boardroom. Noah frowned. It was unlike Ryan to chase him down when he was in another country away for work. Reaching across the table, Noah lifted the phone sitting there on the boardroom table. Punching line two to answer the call. Bringing the handset to his ear. “Hi.” “Noah, thanks for taking my call, mate.” Ryan sounded relieved. “I left my mobile with reception. I just wrapped up a meeting. What is it?” “Noah, it’s William Harrington.” Then the line went quiet for a moment before his friend said. “He passed away less than an hour ago.” Noah felt a pang of guilt. He hadn’t ended things well with William. Noah had liked the man well enough, but was still angry over the forced marriage to April. Even though he had understood William’s desire to protect his daughter. He just wished his last meeting with William hadn’t been the way it was. He had to tread carefully with April. Now he knew she wasn’t to blame for their marriage years ago. She had been the innocent child he had always thought her to be. “I’ll fly home as soon as I can get a flight.” Noah buzzed to let Jarrod know to come back into the room. “I’m sure April would send the Harrington private jet if you didn’t want to wait for a flight.” Ryan said in reply. Jarrod opened the door of the boardroom and walked in, iPad in hand. “I wouldn’t ask. I will just ask Jarrod to book the next available flight for me back home.” It was said to Ryan as much as Jarrod. Noah saw Jarrod understood as he nodded and went to work on his iPad. Noah was sure to book the needed flights. He then let Ryan and Jarrod know. “I’ll get him to stay and tie up any loose ends here.” Someone needed to stay, and he trusted Jarrod. Jarrod held up a thumb. “Ok, if you’re sure.” Ryan said before adding. “I’m here if you need me. Tally has already left for the hospital to be there for April.” Noah knew he should have been there. He would never stay married to April, but right now he was her husband. He had taken this trip to get away from the country. Frustrated at May for not being easy to find. Hugo had rung him with no information on any woman of May’s description being treated with a cut to the hand that night. She was as slippery as an eel. He knew she was hiding something. He just needed to figure out the obstacles in his way. One thing he was very good at was solving problems. He was determined to have May in his life. “Noah.” Came Ryan’s voice on the phone. “I’m here. I’m glad she has Tally. Let me know if I can do anything. There is no point in me calling April. She will not take my call.” “Noah there something I…” Ryan stopped talking as if considering his words. “It doesn’t matter. We can talk about it later.” Noah frowned. It was so unlike Ryan to be uncertain. “Are you sure?” “Yes, right now, it’s not important. Get home, then we will talk.” “Ok, I’ll talk to you soon.” Noah hung up and looked at Jarrod in question. “I have you on a direct flight leaving in 2 hours. You better leave now.” Jarrod looked up from his iPad, then added. “Bad news? Noah nodded. “William Harrington, my father-in-law, has died. I will need you to arrange my hotel room to be packed up. I’ll fly home as I am. There will be no time to go back to the hotel.” “I’m sorry, Noah.” Jarrod didn’t know the entire story about his marriage. He only knew Noah didn’t live with his wife. But he was one of the few that knew he was still married. Jarrod also knew Noah had slept around. It wasn’t the first time he had caught his personal assistant giving him disapproving looks. Shrugging. Noah may have been in the wrong with April and he intended to let her know how sorry he was. It just wouldn’t stop the end of their marriage. “It’s not like it wasn’t unexpected.” Noah said, standing up and gathering his laptop and files from the boardroom table. “He has been sick for sometime.” Before leaving the boardroom to catch his flight. As soon as Noah’s flight landed, he headed to the Harrington estate, intending to meet with April. He waited after knocking on the front door for what seemed an eternity. Before, the door was opened by the butler. “Yes. May I help you?” Noah smirked at the older man. He knew who Noah was. “Is April here?” Well aware she could be making arrangements for her father. “No, Sir she isn’t.” Came the very stiff reply. Not really surprised by the answer or the way it was delivered. “Who is it Henry?” came a loud, arrogant voice from behind the butler Noah watched the butler, Henry, roll his eyes at the question. Noah was even more unsurprised by the door, getting yanked out of the butler’s hand so it could be opened further. He came face to face with April’s uncle David, soon followed by his wife and their daughter Porsha. Upon seeing Noah, Porsha fluttered her eyelashes and pushed out her chest. Noah was so uninterested. “Noah Crawford to see April.” The butler informed David Harrington reluctantly. “I can see that for myself, you idiot.” David shouldered the butler out of the way to fill the doorway as best as he could. “Noah, what are you doing here?” This action made Noah frown down at David. First, for calling the butler an idiot and second for roughly pushing him away. Noah was glad when the butler caught himself before falling. Noah looked at the butler, asking before he would address David’s question. “Are you ok Henry?” Henry looked a little surprised at Noah’s concern. But nodded saying. “Yes, sir.” It was only then he again looked down his nose at David. “I was here to see my wife.” Noah would have thought his presence was self explanatory. “Ex-wife,” David pointed out. “No, Wife. There has been no divorce. I would like to know what you are doing in my wife’s home when she is not in residence? Or pushing around her staff.” Noah watched the flicker of shock in his eyes. He hadn’t realized that April hadn’t been divorced yet. Was that why he was here? To take advantage of her in a vulnerable time. David tried puffing out his chest almost in a carbon copy of his daughter, but this wasn’t to show Noah his assets. It was more to throw his might around. Considering Noah was eight inches taller than the other man. “Well, if she isn’t your ex-wife yet, she soon will be. I will make sure of that.” Noah laughed at the other man. “Really? And how do you expect to do that?” “Well, as head of this family now. I will order the lawyers to draw up the necessary paperwork.” Noah’s eyebrow went up at the other man’s statement. William hadn’t been wrong about David’s intent should anything happen to him. “You are not the head of this family, David.” Noah took a step towards the older man. “You see, when I married April, I made sure I found out everything I could about her family.” David’s eyes widened. Clearly concerned about what Noah may have found out. Noah nodded. The man should be worried. “I know you burned through your inheritance and have been living off William’s generosity for years. Now you are worried that the gravy train will stop unless you can control April. Let me tell you married to her or not. I will never let that happen.” David was speechless for a second before he looked at his family. Noah could see from the look on their faces they had no clue. Well, tough shit. Part of the reason David was broke was because of his wife and daughter’s spending habits. “This has nothing to do with you. This is a family matter…” Noah cut the other man off. “William trusted me to look after April and I intend to be there for her if needed. I’m telling you to pack up your things and get out of this house. I will call the police if I call the house, say in…” Noah looked down at the watch on his wrist. “thirty minutes and Henry tells me you still haven’t gone. Do I make myself clear?” Noah didn’t wait for an answer, just turned and left.If I was meant to be controlled, I would have come with a remote. Quote by no idea?Noah glared at the frail old man standing before him, leaning on his cane heavily. “Let me get this straight. You want me to marry your seventeen-year-old daughter?” April had come along late in the old man’s life. He had been in his 60s when April had been born. Her mother had caused a scandal by running off with the gardener when April was only 3 months old. Gail had only been in her early twenties at the time of April’s birth. She had been a city girl. Living in the country with an older husband and a baby may not have been the life she signed up for or thought she would be getting. Everyone believed she had been in it for the money. But hadn’t been able to stomach it in the end when a younger, sexy man had been available. There was no doubt in everyone’s mind that William Harrington would have had April’s DNA tested after that.It only proved she was the true heiress to the Harrington family becaus
‘Nothing good was ever learned from eavesdropping, so mind you business and let others mind theirs.’ Quote by Maryrose Wood.Noah grappled with his emotions as he made his way towards April. He made an effort to erase any trace of annoyance from his face following his meeting with her father. He didn’t want to weigh her down with the truth about her father’s ultimatum. As he got closer to her, he put on a smile and warmly greeted her.“Hey April, how’s it going?” he asked, trying to sound casual.April looked up, her plump face changing into a small smile, but he saw something was missing. The smile wasn’t genuine. The light that would sparkle in her sea-green eyes was absent. Normally, she didn’t hide her braces from him like she was doing now. Noah wondered if someone had said something to her to make her so aware of them. “Hey Noah! Just doing a little gardening. It’s therapeutic, you know?” She said before looking back down and away from him.Noah nodded, trying to hide his inner
Everybody wants to shine a little bit, even a wallflower. Quote by Phyllis Smith.April had been right as she looked around the room at her eighteenth birthday party. She couldn’t spot anyone that was truly here for her. Even her cousin Porsha, who was closest in age to her, was here to find an eligible man of their social set. April had spotted her seconds ago, hanging onto Noah’s arm, laughing up at him. As she tried to hold his attention. Well, he was free again if the media report was true. He and Willow had broken up. There had been a tearful picture of Willow posted online. The Media were calling Noah heartless.April smoothed a hand down the side of her shift dress. She wore this type of dress often because it didn’t hug her figure at all. But already one boy had commented she looked like a sack of potatoes, making her feel very self-conscious. But she didn’t have Porsha’s tall, sexy body. She wasn’t thin with nice high boobs. She was short at 5 feet 3 and she was overweight. I
Marry in haste, repent at Leisure. Quote by William Congrove.April’s heart pounded in her chest as she walked down the aisle, knowing that she was about to marry a groom who didn’t truly desire her. However, she had no choice in the matter if she wanted her beloved father to have a chance at life-saving surgery.Reluctantly, she had given in, as her father knew she would. But once this forced marriage was over and her father had undergone his procedure, she would grant Noah his freedom, regardless of her father’s wishes. She didn’t want a man who didn’t think she was woman enough. If she ended things, walked away from their marriage. Then it wouldn’t matter what her father had promised him. He wouldn’t lose out because he didn’t have a choice in the matter. After hearing the hurtful words spoken about her, April had little fear of Noah desiring her sexually. Obtaining an annulment should be a straightforward process. Her father would no longer have anything to hold over her once his o
‘Those who belittle others are usually so little themselves. Small people belittle others. Great people make others feel they to can become great.’ Quote by Nick Verd.April barely had time to plaster a small smile on her face, still covering her braces, before they entered the hall. To claps and cheers. In her mind, she had very little to be happy about right now. The way Noah had looked at her made her self-conscious of her overweight body. She didn’t want to be here. The hard grip Noah had on her hand stopped April from fleeing, which she would love to do if she got the chance. He brought her around the bridal table and moved her into her seat. She knew it wasn’t a gentlemanly gesture on his part. He was just performing for the crowd, doing what was expected of a happy groom. As soon as he sat down beside her, he immediately turned away to engage in conversation with his best man, Ryan.April felt incredibly frustrated that she hadn’t been given the opportunity to explain to Noah th
‘And I finally let go. It was the beginning for me and the end for you.’ Quote by Nikki Rowe.Noah had booked them into the honeymoon suite of his hotel because it was expected by their guests that they should stay the night. As they walked into the luxurious rooms. He couldn’t help but sense the tension emanating from April. It was almost tangible. What was she expecting him to do? Jump her the minute the door closed. But there was no chance of him sleeping with her. The last thing he was interested in was a schemer! She was a manipulative little bitch who had gotten her father to hand her the husband she wanted. It would be a cold day in hell before he allowed another lying cold-hearted bitch in his bed again. Ashley in university had shown him to watch out for women. But he had let April slip under his guard because he had thought her too young and naïve to play games.“You don’t have to worry. I have no intention of exercising my marital rights with you tonight or any other night.”
‘It’s all right to put on the weight of the world on your shoulders sometimes, if you know how to take it off.’ Quote by James Patterson.“Hey May, are you ready to go out tonight and party?” April glanced up from her book and grinned at her friend Trent, who had plonked down beside her. He gestured with his hand, miming drinking. May was the name she used at university.“Definitely.” April scanned the courtyard, observing students lounging on the lawns of the university campus. Exams were finally over and everyone was relaxed. Some would leave the university, while others would return next year. Who would have imagined four years ago that she would graduate with an MBA someday?Initially, she had enrolled in the program to prove to everyone that she could do anything. But it hadn’t taken long for her to fall in love with every minute of her studies. She hadn’t wanted to trade in on her family’s name. So she had used her middle name of May, which had in fact been her grandmother’s name
‘Life is like a roller coaster, live it, be happy, enjoy life.’ Quote by Avril Lavigne.Because Poppy’s place was the closest to the club, they had all decided to get ready there. With Poppy’s name, anyone would think she should be a redhead, but she wasn’t. She was blonde and tall and gorgeous. Beautiful with her even features and bright blue eyes. She had always had men chasing her around campus. Not even the thought of her having a baby at home had put them off. Tonight she wasn’t playing her look down like she normally did. Because they were making April wear a dress, she was making them wear dresses as well.April looked down at the green silk dress that hugged every curve. “Are you sure about this? I mean, it’s short.”Poppy laughed. “Not as short as it was on me. But that was a lifetime ago. Plus, it brings out your green eyes. Makes them seem brighter.”April looked over at her friend. On her the dress stopped mid-thigh, but on Poppy’s tall elegant figure, the dress would be a

“Fuck.” Noah said aloud as he finished pulling up his pants and buttoning and zipping himself up. He knew by the time he was done, she would be long gone. He wanted to know what the hell she was playing at. She ran hot and cold.If he didn’t fancy her like mad. Plus, it had been the best sex of his life. He would just walk away without a backward glance, like he had done too many times before. But he did want her in a way he hadn’t wanted anyone. It wasn’t just the sex.Pulling his phone out of his pants pocket. Noah dialed Hugo’s number. “Hugo, I ran into May at the hospital when I was visiting Ryan. She had a bandage on her hand. Do you have a contact within the hospital who can look into all ER visits tonight?”“Sure, but boss, if you ran into her, how did she get away?” Hugo was curious enough to ask.Noah could feel the heat rising on his cheeks. How indeed. But he would not be telling Hugo how. That he had been caught with his pants down. “She got away, as I was otherwise occupie
When no negative answer was forthcoming from her. Noah let her hands go from above her head. In short order, he had his belt and zipper undone. Freeing his length. Making her gasp as the heat of him touched her inner thigh. Her legs trembled. She lifted them and wrapped them tightly around his waist as he positioned himself. April’s breath hitched as she felt the head of his erection press against her entrance, the promise of what was to come making her heart pound even harder. But he didn’t push in immediately. Instead, he pulled away, leaving her hanging, aching for more.“Tell me,” he demanded, his voice cutting through the haze of desire. “Tell me what you want, May.”She blinked, dazed and disoriented, her mind struggling to form words. “I... I don’t know,” she stammered, her voice soft and uncertain.Noah let out a dark chuckle, his eyes gleaming with amusement. “Liar,” he said simply, “You know exactly what you want. You’re just too stubborn to admit it.”Her cheeks burned with
‘Most of the problems in life are because of two reasons: we act without thinking or we keep thinking without acting.’ Quote by Unknown.“What is it? What’s wrong?” Noah asked.April shook her head. “Nothing important.” God, she hoped not.“Then can we start again?” Noah asked.April didn’t think that was a good idea. Not only did Noah not know who she was, but he had hurt her every day for the last four years, starting from their wedding day.“I just don’t think that would be good for me.” April wrapped her arms around her waist, watching him. “Look Noah, let’s call it what it was. We both had fun, but we both saw it as a one-night stand.”“And not worth a repeat. If I remember your words correctly.” Noah said, taking another step towards her.April held her hand up as if to stop him from advancing. “I was angry when I wrote that note. But I don’t want you, Noah, for more than we have already shared. Let’s just go our separate ways.”April’s breath caught as Noah’s hand closed around
'Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memery no one can steal.' Quote by Richard PuzNoah couldn’t believe it. The woman that had barreled into his chest as she was leaving the hospital was May.He gripped her arms, holding on, so she wouldn’t vanish again. He could see she wasn’t pleased to see him. She looked tired and her hand was also bandaged. How long had she been in the ER before being treated? “What happened to your hand?”She looked at her hand resting against his chest and blinked at the stark white bandage before saying, “I cut it on some glass. They just put three stitches in.” She didn’t meet his eyes, instead looked at his hands gripping her arms. “Can you let go of me, please? I would like to go home.”Noah’s hands tightened slightly on her arms. He was afraid if he let her go, even for a second, he might never find her again. “May, can we talk? I would like to set the record straight.” He said to the top of her head because she was staring at his ches
April listened to the conversation between her father and Noah. Surprised that her dad was so open about his regret four years ago. Well, at least Noah knew the truth now. She had never tricked him into marriage. She had no part in what her father had done. Even now, she understood why he had done it. Since William’s hospitalization, her uncle and his family had been circling. Luckily, Mr. Harper was more than capable of handling him for now. When Noah left the room with the doctor, April came out from behind the bathroom door. Then shamelessly moved to the door leading out into the hall to listen to their conversation.“William Harrington is my father-in-law.” She heard Noah tell the doctor.“Not for long, sweetheart.” April said under her breath.“That’s ok then. Sorry, Mr. Crawford, we can never be too careful.” The doctor said.“I understand completely. I’m sure my wife will be happy that you are protecting her father.” Noah said a little loudly.April snorted at Noah calling her a
‘We all make mistakes in life. That’s true, some little, some big, some simple and some more complex, some mistakes we regret forever.’ Quote By Rashard Royster. It was only when she returned to her dad’s room that she realized Ryan might be in the same wing in the ICU. Given Ryan’s unstable condition and her father’s impending fate on death row, they were both in the ICU.April impulsively rose from her chair and cracked open the door to take a peek. She timed it perfectly, as Tally entered the ward with Noah by her side. April’s heart raced, and her skin felt flushed. She only saw him for a few moments before he disappeared into the room opposite.April stood there waiting for him to come out. Turning, she looked at her father, who was still asleep. If he woke up, she would leave her peeping and join him. April didn’t even want to think about why she was doing this. Time for thinking wasn’t now.Noah couldn’t believe it. It seemed so surreal, but it was happening. Looking at Ryan lay
‘Fate Decides Who Comes Into Your Life, Your Heart Decides Who Stays.’ Quote by Someone?April could see she didn’t have long with her father. He had stopped eating some of his favorite foods she often brought in for him. At least she had had this last Christmas. But she knew in her heart he would not make Easter. In the weeks since Christmas, he had gotten so much worse. She could see he was hanging on for her. April wanted to tell him to let go. Every time she tried to form the words, she just couldn’t.Her dad had fallen into another heavy sleep and she needed a coffee. So she decided to head to the hospital cafeteria. The coffee was terrible, and the food wasn’t much better. But it was at the hospital that was the main thing. She just didn’t have the energy to find somewhere to eat outside the grounds where the food and coffee would be better.Once April had grabbed what she wanted and paid, she looked around the seating area, seeing them mostly full. She was going to have to ask t
April let herself into her brownstone later that night. Exhausted, she dropped her keys into the bowl on the entry table. Then hung up her coat, putting her handbag on the chair. She then dragged her bone weary body into the kitchen.Opening the fridge to grab the open bottle of wine. April had just taken a glass down when the doorbell rang. She placed the glass on the countertop and went to answer the door.Looking through the peephole, April saw her friends. Quickly, she pulled the door open. She said in surprise, not expecting to see them tonight.Sophie, Trent, and Poppy stood on her stoop. “Hey guys.”They didn’t wait to be invited in, just stepped by her. All kissing her on the way past to the kitchen. April closed her front door and followed her friends. They were unpacking Chinese and pulling out plates from her cabinets. They knew their way around her kitchen. They had done this before. Sometimes an all night study session. Not like they would be having one of those again.Pop
