~Isabelle~
I stared at my phone for a couple of seconds, surprised that Jason had called me; of all people, my brother, after all this time, and I could not really explain how it made me feel. I was still struggling with calling Jason back or simply waiting to see if he would call back when Sasha came back.
“Hope I didn’t stay long,” Sasha said as she slid into the chair close to my bed.
She had some food in a food pack and soft drinks with her.
“No, you didn’t,” I answered, but my mind was somewhere else.
“Is everything okay?” Sasha asked. “You look a little pale,” she added. When I wasn’t responding, Sasha began to bring out the food from the food pack. “I got you some food to cheer you up, and don’t worry; the doctor assured me that you could have them,” Sasha said, feeling fulfilled with herself.
“Jason called me,” I blurted out.
Sasha knew everything about leaving my family and marrying Victor. She was aware that I had been estranged from my family for years now; I hadn’t spoken to any of them or seen them at all.
Sasha stopped what she was doing when she heard what I said, and she slowly turned to me. “Belle, are you serious? Are you sure it was Jason?” Sasha asked and I nodded. “It has been four years now,” Sasha reminded me.
“I know,” I said, my heart beating faster than usual.
“Do you think it was a mistake?” Sasha asked.
“A mistake would be once, Sash, but he called me five times,” I told Sasha.
“Belle!” Sasha exclaimed, making me feel more uneasy. “I don’t know what this is, or what to say,” she admitted.
Well, that makes two of us.
“I am just worried, Sasha. It has been so long, and calling me out of the blue like this is worrisome,” I confessed to Sasha.
She was the only person I could confide in about everything, and I felt glad that I did not cut her off when I married Victor Walters, because by now, I would have had no one by my side. Sasha was the one who made torturous years with Victor and his family less excruciating, as she always provided me with listening ears and a shoulder to cry on.
“Maybe you should call him back to see what he wants?” Sasha suggested, but she was skeptical about it.
Just then, the door opened slowly and a nurse; the one assigned to attending to me popped her head into the room. “Mrs. Walters?” she called.
I winced at the sound of that name, because being called Mrs. Walters reminded me of the hell I went through bearing that name, and also how Victor’s family continued to antagonize me simply because I had taken on their name.
“What is it?” Sasha answered instead.
“She has a visitor,” the nurse informed Sasha since it was Sasha who answered her.
I instantly thought that it was Victor who had come to see me, so I began to shake my head to decline, because right now, I could not even stand the sight of him.
“He says his name is Jason Geralt,” the nurse announced before I could even finish shaking my head.
Both Sasha and I looked at each other as our eyes became wide open in shock; she wasn’t also expecting my visitor to be Jason.
“Do I ask him to come in? You still have about thirty minutes to your visiting hours,” she asked and explained at the same time.
I was too conflicted about what I wanted that I could not give an exact response to the nurse. Instead, I just stared at Sasha, totally dazed.
“Let him come in,” Sasha answered the nurse; apparently, she got over the shock faster than I.
I looked at Sasha, widening my eyes more in shock and dread. “Sash! You didn’t ask me first,” I said, my voice shaking slightly with fear.
“He came all the way here to see you, Isabelle, and we don’t even know how he got to know that you are here, so it’s best to talk to him,” Sasha told me.
“What if it doesn’t turn out well?” I asked, saying the unspoken words, and thankful at the same time that Sasha knew and understood me so well that I did not need to say all that I was thinking before she knew.
“I am certain that he didn’t come all that way for that, so relax,” Sasha said just in time.
The door opened and Jason stood right there.
In that moment, it was as though the world had frozen in time. We both stared at each other as though we were seeing each other for the very first time, but actually, Jason looked somewhat different in my eyes. He looked more mature and highly built now; different from the lanky young man I had known before.
“I will give you both some time to talk,” Sasha said as she got up and left the ward in a blink of an eye.
Her words brought us back to reality as Jason cleared his throat and walked up to my bed. Contrary to what I had feared, I felt at ease.
“Isabelle,” Jason simply said, calling gently with rasped breath, as though he could not also believe that it was I he was seeing.
“Jason,” I called equally.
“I was worried that you might not want to see me,” Jason said calmly, and it dawned on me that I had definitely misjudged the situation.
I instantly felt bad for thinking and feeling the way I did earlier.
“How did you find me here?” I asked Jason.
There were thousands of questions running through my head to ask, and I knew that Jason had tons of things to say as well. It was as though time would not be enough for the both of us.
“I will tell you all about that,” Jason said, then he looked around. “I don’t see the man you left everything for by your bedside,” Jason observed.
I looked away and said, “I am divorcing him, Jason, and I need a lawyer.”
~Isabelle~Today was the day scheduled to hand over the divorce papers to Victor. Jason’s arrival was like a miracle, because without asking much questions, he swung into action, and in less than four hours, he had gotten me a lawyer and a divorce will had been crafted.I meant it when I told Victor that I was no longer returning to that house, so I instructed the lawyer Jason got for me to prepare the divorce proceedings in a courtroom. That way, it was strict and professional, and I also instructed him to include in the letter of invitation to the court issued to Victor that no family member was allowed to attend the proceeding. It had to be just the two of us.I did that because I did not want to have to deal with his cruel and antagonistic family, because I knew that if they showed up at the court, they would throw shades at me.“I hope he will not be late,” I said to Jason worriedly as we sat in the car that Jason had rented when he arrived and waited for the lawyer. It was surpr
~Isabelle~As soon as Victor finished signing the divorce papers, his lawyer handed my copy over to Barrister Andrew.“It is done,” he said. “You two are now officially divorced,” he added. The words sounded like music to my ears, and even though I saw Victor sign, I still wanted the satisfaction of seeing it for myself, so I looked at it again, and indeed, it was Victor’s signature, not that he would give a fake signature anyway.“Is there anything anyone would like to say?” Victor’s lawyer asked.“No,” I answered instantly, and the look of shock that showed in Victor’s face was unmistakable. “We are officially divorced, as you rightly confirmed, so what are we possibly supposed to say to each other, congratulations?” I sneered.Even Victor’s lawyer was taken aback by my mocking tone.In fact, as soon as it was done, I wanted to stand up instantly and leave so that I would get away from Victor as fast as possible, but then again, Jason was outside waiting for me. If I got up and left
~Victor~I lingered in the car after I arrived home late at night, staring at the divorce paper in my hands. My signature and that of Isabelle’s were close to one another, and it reminded me of our wedding certificate; it had been exactly like it, but now, I could not even recall where the certificate was, and maybe that was the problem. This felt like a bad dream that I really wanted to wake up from badly, because never in my wildest dreams would I have thought that Isabelle would grow the balls to demand for a divorce, let alone pursue it till the end. Her confidence in that courtroom was etched in my mind like art. After I left the court, I went to the office, but I could barely concentrate on anything, so I left, but I couldn’t come home either. I didn’t want to come home just yet, so I went to the golf club and spent the remaining hours of the day there.“This is a very late time to be returning home, Victor,” Laura, Victor’s mother stated firmly the moment I entered the well-fu
~Victor~“Are you sure?” Laura asked, her voice dripping in disbelief.I could not also believe what I saw myself. If not that Mona had mentioned it, I did not even think of it when I went through the divorce paper. I would have fought her tooth and nail, but then again, Isabelle did not go with any dime, especially with her current predicament, how was she going to cope? What even gave Isabelle the audacity?“It is right here,” I said and handed the divorce paper to my mum.Mona also came downstairs and went through the paper with my mum and they both saw that truly, Isabelle did not demand a dime.“Well, good riddance to bad rubbish then,” my mum said dismissively as she handed the divorce paper back to me. “Why did you go without telling any of us, anyway?” She asked.“That was the instruction,” I answered quietly, but my mind was just elsewhere.“I am just glad that she knew the right thing to do by getting out of our lives,” Mona said, her voice dripping with hatred. “Now you can
~Isabelle~The world from the skies, although a little dark but dimly lit because of the lights just seemed to soothe me as I watched from the plane, even though it was very dark.I still did not know how I feel about getting back home almost immediately, but then again, I wasn’t going alone, so the presence of Jason made it less worrisome.“I thought you would be sleeping resting,” Jason said, his voice cutting through my quiet and calm thoughts when he opened his eyes.“I can’t sleep,” I told Jason.Since I gave up my family and married Victor, I hadn’t flown on a plain, because Victor hardly took me anywhere. In fact, he always left me in the house while he traveled and toured round, and it never really bothered me, because the only thing I ever wanted was for him to love and adore me…but then again, even that was a vain desire, because he never did. Anyway, I did not bother giving Jason that information.“You still haven’t told me everything that transpired between you and him tha
~Victor~I still could not believe that Sasha was saying the truth about Isabelle being gone, because no matter how I pushed, she refused to tell me exactly where Isabelle had gone to.It took every ounce of self-control in me not to barge into her house forcefully last night to look around the house myself. As early as possible, I arrived at my lawyer’s office, Barrister Joe.“You sounded so urgent when you called for a meeting this morning,” he said. “What is the matter?” he asked me.“I don’t want the divorce anymore,” I blurted out.He seemed confused for a few seconds. “What divorce are we talking about?” Barrister Joe asked me.“Signing the divorce papers was done under duress on my part, and I want it revisited,” I stated firmly.“Mr. Walters, you sat in that courtroom and willingly signed the divorce papers,” Barrister Joe reminded me.He looked at me as though I was insane, and he was right, but then again, I had every right to make demands, because the divorce was not even
~Isabelle~The sound of my phone woke up me, and when I checked, I realized that I had actually slept way into the morning, because it was almost noon. It was Sasha calling, and so with a smile on my face, I picked up the call.“Hey girl,” Sasha greeted in her usual fancy as soon as the call connected. “Were you sleeping?” She asked almost immediately and I giggled. That was the thing with Sasha; she always knew what was happening around me or with me without even being physically present. “I was,” I admitted to her.“Hmm, someone seemed to have settled in quite well, because the last time I checked, you were skeptical about going,” Sasha teased.“Well, we got in late last night and I haven’t seen anyone yet, including my dad. So it is just Jason for now. Maybe I should go downstairs and get familiar with everyone and things around here again,” I said, but I still did not move a muscle.“That does not sound bad at all,” Sasha said.“Were you missing me so badly that you had to call?
~Isabelle~“What?!” I yelled in shock.“What is it?” Jason asked immediately, instantly worried. He moved closer to me when I wasn’t saying anything and scanned through the paper I just read and his faced contorted in anger instantly.“Your divorce is being readdressed?” Jason asked, even though he had clearly read it there.I could not even blame him, because I am stunned at it myself. “But why? I thought you both clearly signed the divorce papers in the courtroom yesterday,” Jason asked, expressing his concern.“I am certain we did,” I told Jason when I was eventually able to get my head out of the shock.I began to pace about the room angrily. This was just yesterday and today I was getting the summon for the divorce to be readdressed? As far as I could remember, I ensured that I stated that I wanted nothing from Victor and his family, because I wanted to just leave the marriage and be done with it, and it still wasn’t enough?“Then what is this about?” Jason asked.“I don’t know!
~Victor~I felt like a complete zombie as I drove out of Sasha’s neighborhood. Things with Isabelle had gotten worse than I had anticipated, and that was way different from what I had hoped would happen. At the same time, I was more than grateful that I had followed my instincts, because the thought of what might have happened to Isabelle sent shivers down my spine. My heart and face hardened as I thought of Mr. Hedge.I knew he was a dangerous man, but I never anticipated that he would that dangerous enough to try to kill Isabelle simply because she seemed to be standing in the way of me and Sara. I was getting close to the house, and I knew that if I wanted to do anything, I would have to do it before I got there, so I took my phone and dialed the number of a senior cop whom I had once made his acquaintance a while back.Thankfully, he picked on the first ring. “Mr. Victor, it is such a delight to be getting a call from you,” he said cheerful the moment the call connected.Upon hea
~Isabelle~I squeezed my eyes in pain as Victor left. I did not even bother keeping my ears alert to be certain that he had left the apartment, even though he now scared the hell out of me; I was too broken and my heart was too pained to even listen to anything else.I continued to close my eyes tightly, because I was trying every means possible not to cry; that was exactly how I was feeling deep inside. It was bad enough that Victor had hurt me in more ways than one since I filed for a divorce, and if he had simply let me go, I would not even have seen or known about any of this. Was this why he pushed for the divorce to be readdressed; so that he could drag me back to Seagate City and torment the heck out of me?What was the story behind this attack? It was obvious now that Victor either knew something or was even involved, and I could not even explain how that made me feel. I would never do anything to hurt or harm Victor or even any member of his family even though I deeply hated
~Isabelle~I wondered why I hadn’t even thought of that to begin it. Usually, in situations like this, after knocking him down, Victor would have been concerned about holding the attacker down and instantly calling the cops so that he would be arrested, and whoever sent him would be known as well, because I had no doubt that someone must have sent him to me.First of all, Sasha had lived in this very apartment for more than four years, and there had never been a break-in; not in her apartment or any of the other apartments situated in the neighborhood, and secondly, he waited until Sasha had left the house before breaking-in to attack me. It was very obvious that he did not come to steal or rob us; he intentionally came to kill me.The thought of it even made me shiver.“Can you answer that?” I asked when Victor kept mute.I caught a flicker of guilt in his eyes before it was quickly replaced by regret and sadness, and it made me even more uncomfortable? Did Victor have anything to do
~Isabelle~I heard a loud thud as I closed my eyes, which even made me confused, because I had been dreadfully anticipating a painful slit over my throat, or a piercing stab to my stomach, but the thud came as a shock, and more confusing was the fact that I did not feel any pain. Then I opened my eyes.“Isabelle, are you okay?” Victor asked.I hadn’t known when Victor entered into the apartment or when he even did, and although I was surprised and still confused, I was more than relieved. I looked down and saw the man writhing on the floor, but almost immediately, he struggled to his feet and scampered out of the apartment without anyone of us chasing after him.“Isabelle, breathe…” Victor was saying when I continued to look dazed and confused.I tried to breathe, but I had held my breath for too long that it had become stuck, and so I didn’t even know when I slid into unconsciousness. I felt myself being carried in the air and laid gently, but I just couldn’t open my eyes or protest
~Isabelle~After taking a hot bath with the words of the doctor stuck in my head about the condition of my pregnancy, I came out of my bedroom.Since Sasha stalked off angrily, she hadn’t come out of her bedroom. Even when I made dinner and had a fill to my satisfaction, she did not show up, which indicated that she was very pissed off, but then again, this wasn’t her decision to make.I meant it when I said that neither Victor nor any of his family members would know anything about this pregnancy. The only persons that knew were Sasha and Jason, and I already made them promise to keep it a secret. Every time I got pregnant, Victor never wasted time to announce it with glee to his family, except the last one before this one anyway, and so now, I just wanted to carry this baby in secrecy. Then there was also Laura Walters who would not mind killing me if she ever found out just so that I would not in any way be connected to her precious little family anymore.I thought of going to Sash
~Victor~The choice my mum gave me was a crucial one, and with the fiery look in her eyes, I knew that she was dead serious. If I didn’t know her, I might have thought that this was just a mere choice, but there was no way I was going to get out of this.“Which is it going to be, Victor; your family or that woman?” Laura asked as she tilted her head, waiting for a response. My eyes went to the gigantic expensive and customized clock on our wall, and I was again reminded that time was ticking by really fast, and that if I didn’t do something, Mr. Hedge was going to get to Isabelle, and I would live the rest of my life in regret. I could have decided to call Isabelle right now and send a warning to her, probably ask her to leave Sasha’s apartment for now, but then again, there was no way I could achieve that while standing right in front of my mum, and more importantly, Isabelle was too upset with me that she would not even take my calls or read my texts.I inhaled and exhaled, knowing
~Victor~The thought of anything happening to Isabelle almost made me go insane, and I just knew that I had to do something. Running out of the house like a cat on a wild chase was crazy, but I could not think of something else. First of all, I wanted Isabelle back, and secondly, I would never forgive myself if anything happened to Isabelle because of me.I got into my car; there was no need for any driver or bodyguard, and I drove towards the gate, but to my utmost surprise and anger, the gate refused to open up for me, which was strange.“What is going on?” I asked as I came down from the car and proceeded towards gate. The security guard was standing by the gate, erect with a serious look on his face. Although it was an expensive gate, I had expected an excuse to the gate not opening that it was having some sort of fault.“What the heck is going on?” I asked. “I am hurrying out and you are just standing there,” I said, getting increasingly upset.“Mrs. Laura has instructed me not t
~Victor~This was the most difficult question I have ever had to answer in my entire life, and I just wished that things weren’t so hard and tight. The warning and dread that came with that question, although unspoken, was a clear message of what I would suffer, along with my family, if my answer was negative. Mr. Hedger would have my head on a platter, and just like he had said, he would make my company go away and never get back up again.I was conflicted and devastated.I wished that I had been more prepared before being crowned the CEO and handed the company to run, but then again, things had happened so fast in my family that I had had to step in. Right after high school and university, I had gone to one of the biggest business schools in the world to continue my education and prepare myself for the company’s takeover. According to my dad, he had wanted me to be perfectly ready to become the CEO.“I think you should start showing him the ropes of the company, Walters. He is no lo
~Victor~“How could I have made that stupid mistake? How could I have been that foolish?” I asked myself as I paced about my bedroom, confused.Actually, if I was being honest, I think I knew exactly why I had made the mistake of saying Isabelle’s name instead of Sara’s; it was Isabelle that I was thinking about deep down, otherwise, who mentions another woman’s name when proposing?I felt like knocking myself in the head, but then again, the only regret I had from all of this was the huge contract that I caused my company to lose. I never wanted that bloody proposal anyway, and it had all been Sara’s idea. If she had accepted, we would have been discussing wedding dates and venues and dresses by now, and it would have driven me insane. The only woman I wanted in my life right now was Isabelle, and no one else. Then my phone rang, and much to my dismay, I saw that it was Mr. Hedger, Sara’s father. I didn’t know what to expect of the call, and his call was not something that should not
