Her heart raced as Hector removed his mask, revealing half of a face she had never seen.

Her mouth hung open, her breath hitching as she wiped the tears from her eyes to ensure she could see correctly. She didn't see that coming. Hector, unmasked, stood before her. The shock of it —his vulnerability exposed —took her breath away.

Not since that frantic night that he had burst into her chamber, saving her from Roisin's wrath. Maysie had told her later that Hector didn't wear his mask, but Skye hadn't dared to look up. Shame had kept her gaze lowered.

At that moment, she couldn't tear her eyes away. His half-revealed face held her captive, and his eyes bore into hers. Curiosity danced there, mingling with her startled surprise. The lighting of her eyes, her lips parted —as if she were witnessing a rare celestial event —not from fear but from the sheer unexpectedness of it all. His jagged and raw scar drew her gaze like a moth to the flame.

He followed her eyes as they examined his scar.
