Pingggg”, the notification sound from my phone cut through my reverie.
“MEET ME AT THE HOUSE IN TEN.”
I groaned inwardly at the curtness of the the message from my grandfather. He was the only one who knew how to get under my skin and not regard me with the safe fear as my men.Despite that, he’s the only person I show any ounce of emotion towards. The reason I still had a seat as Capo and an army of loyal men to lead. That is until I weed out all my enemies stirring up matters behind the scenes.
This was all because of the my father and his disgrace of leadership as Capo. The mere thought of him was like bile in my throat.
Tossing the remnants of my drink down,I picked up my keys and made way to the house to find out what the meeting with grandfather was about.
“Boss.”, the men who littered the compound greeted with a slight bow as I switched off the engine. I responded with a light nod and make way into the building.
“Grandpa?” I called out closing the door behind me. He stood at the top of the staircase. “Kian,to the study.”
He answered and turned.
I struggled to figure out what his expression was about and I picked up on the tension he radiated.
Something was definitely amiss and I was eager to find out. Grandpa was currently worried at the the growing numbers of the bosses who were not pleased with me being chosen as Capo after my father. We needed to silence those voices before they recruited more men to join their cause.
“Did something happen?” I asked as we got into the study.
“It will soon if you don’t trash out your foes and get all the bosses on your side before the official induction. You need to seal your position as Capo.”
The strain in his voice was not lost on me.
“I am wor…..”,he raised his hand to silence me.
“I have a solution to your problem.”
“But grandpa you know I’m working on it.Very soon I’ll fish out those lowly cowards and give them a choice to pledge their allegiance or have their throats slashed.”
“I wasn’t referring to that problem,Kian” ,he responded with a chuckle.
I stared in confusion. “ Which problem grandpa?”
“Sealing your position as Capo by marriage. You are to get married and start a family” , he said without batting an eyelid as he stared at me.
My mouth fell open. “ What?”
My arms started to shake from unrestrained anger. “ No fucking way in hell.” I glared.
Grandfather frowned. He swirled the whiskey around in his glass not looking up.
“It has always been tradition for a Capo to be married at the time of his induction. You will not be an exception.”
“We have to set things straight and get the Traditionalists on our side”, he continued.
Anger burned through my veins. I could feel my temper bursting out of its cage at his casual tone and dismissive body language.
It was as though he was oblivious to my anger.
“ I am not going to get married to satisfy some archaic traditions and please some fucking old men!You know this grandpa.”, i bellowed shaking from anger.
“Marriage is a liability I cannot afford. I will seal my position as Capo by slashing the throats of anyone who speaks against me. Not by some fucking marriage. It is never going to happen.
Not today ,not tomorrow, not ever, Don Silver.
Using his name caught his attention and I wished it hadn’t.
His eyes shot up. I saw the split second of anger on his face before the schooled mask of calm slipped back on.
“ At the expense of you seat as Capo?”, he asked in a dangerously low voice.
A sharp intake of breath escaped from my lips in surprise. “ You will not-“
“You don’t get to tell me what I will and will not do Kian DaSilver. You will listen and listen good.!”
“There is no room for preferences while your seat as Capo dangles before your eyes. Getting the Traditional underbosses on your side will make things easier for you. Get over your emotions son!”, he said in a firm voice.
“I will not do this grandpa.I cannot do it.”
Flashes of my father pleading for mercy while being left to bleed out like some rabid dog begn to appear before my eyes.
“Stop being hotheaded about this and listen to my fucking instructions! Don’t be like your father! That was his downfall.”
“ Do not compare me to that weakling!”, I growled and banged my fists unto the desk that separated us.
“ Then calm the fuck down and listen to what I have to say. I know what’s best for you son. And I am doing this so you will not have any problems in the future. This is the only way. Agree to this marriage and I will have a meeting with the underbosses to get them on our side.”
“Okay”, I brought my self to say.
I walked to the far end of the study and stopped in front of the window overlooking the premises. I lowered my gaze to my fingers which traced the cool marble of the window sill.
Everything grandpa had said was something I knew but because he had never mentioned it I thought I had been given a leeway.
The thought of getting married brought my blood to boil. I knew just one thing- marriage and love make you weak. Just as it did to my father. And I would die before I gave it a chance to do the same to me.
“I have already chosen you a bride son”, I heard grandpa say.
I turned to face him in surprise.
With a sly grin he tapped on the laptop which I had not noticed before and turned it to face me.
“ Anya Moretti-“
“ Daughter of Salvatore Morretti”, I cut him midway.
“But grandpa there is a scandal about them in the papers.Surely you do not want us to be associated with them at this time”, i grimaced.
“That has been sorted . You should watch the news son.”, he answered with a deviant smile.
“ What have you done grandpa?”, I shook my hard while I stared at the photo of the most amber colored eyes I had ever come across in my life.
“We will formally announce your engagement tomorrow evening at a dinner in their house.”, grandpa said and left without waiting for my reply.
“Fuck!”, I muttered under my breath as I stared at the photo one more time.
Kian’s POVI stared at my reflection in mirror furious, that I was going through with Grandpa’s plan for me to get married.Surely there had to be another way around this. But my right hand man, Darryl and I had not been able to come up with a more feasible solution.“You really are not agoing to marry that girl now , are you?”, Darryl said without looking up from where he sat on my bed.His question made my skin tick. After my conversation with Don Silver he was the first person I called to help me come up with a better idea to give Don. “ I would shut up if I were you!”, I snapped.“ What would you have me do , huh”, I quizzed him pointedly.“ Defy Don??”, I asked incredulously.“ He threatened me with the Capo seat. Threatened to take it back. Surely you know that Don is the last person who will just say something like that.”“Surely, you are not going along with Don’s plan just like that, are you?”, Darryl asked with a skeptical look at me.My lips twitched, marveling at how well
Chapter 7Kian’s POV I could feel Grandpa’s eyes on me almost throughout the whole drive to the Moretti mansion. It felt as though he had something to say and was struggling to keep it down.I knew it was probably the fact that I had not stopped the car in the middle of the street to say I wasn’t going to go ahead with this anymore. Not that I had not thought of it. But the veiled threat Grandpa issued with the Capo seat, was the only thing keeping me in check.I hated the situation he put in me but I what I hated even more was the fact that I didn’t have the upper hand in it.“Fuck it!”, I mentally kicked myself for letting things get out of hand. There was no going back now.Soon we pulled up in front of the Moretti mansion. My fury wouldn’t let me appreciate the beauty of the place.Perhaps if a different occasion had brought me here I would have.I quickly got down ready to get in and get out of there in the shortest possible time.“You could at least school your expression like
Anya’s POV I leaned against the banister to calm my nerves.“You survived it, Anya. Yes, you did.”, I muttered to myself.I could not believe my supposed husband to be was the cause of my current unnerved state. How was I expected to survive in a marriage with such a human. That is if he was one at all.His deep and cold emotionless voice still rang in my head. And that smirk he had on his face failed to disappear from my memory.“Anya?”My eyes shot up at the sound of mother’s voice from the top of the stairs. She stared at me with a quizzical look on her face.“ Why do you look so shaken up?”, she asked with concern.I grimaced at her question. Was it that obvious about how badly shaken up I was?My face gave her the answer to her question.“ He is here, isn’t he?”, she said with a slight tremor in her voice.I nodded my head in response.“ I have to go down before your father calls for me.Get yourself together child.”, she said as she walked past me.I watched her as she descended
I watched the smile on my father’s face quickly morph into a grim as he shot up from his chair. The movement caused his juice glass to tumble over ,spilled its contents on the floor.“Salvatore!”,my mom stood from her chair. My father’s body tensed and his face turned stone.“Anya ,the television.Nowww!”he roared.I quickly rushed and turned it on,my body buzzing at the tone of his voice. “CEO By Day,Mafia Boss By Night:Is Moretti Industries just a front?”The news caption read.I sucked in a breath as I turned to face the rest of my family.Their faces mirrored mine and the voice of the newscaster faded as we regarded each other.“Salvatore”,my mom whispered grabbing unto his arm.“Fuck!”,Cassio my brother hissed.“This is bullshit.”This wasn’t the first time news about our family business had reached the public ear.But never had it been so blatant ,never so damning. It had always remained whispers and rumours in the shadows, even if people suspected it.Fear, cold and sharp snaked i
Three days had passed and the articles about our family business were still very much alive and trending on the internet. We woke up to hungry journalists and bloggers churning the defamatory articles into new stories and spun webs of innuendo about my father each morning. A massive social media campaign had erupted, demanding that all Moretti industries be closed and my father investigated. Our mansion which used to be a haven now sat like a time bomb ready to explode. The frustration in the house was palpable. Dad paced the length of his office like a caged animal. His usual air of quiet power was fractured, replaced by a raw desperation. His tailored suit hung loosely on his broad frame ,a stark contrast to his usual impeccable appearance. Father had always been a man of power and seeing him reduced to this state gnawed at my insides. “Useless.”,dad roared sending the items on his desk skittering across the room. Stan flinched at his tone.
Earlier in the day…..“To what do I owe this visit,Don Silva?”,Salvatore Moretti asked his voice clipped but controlled. He straightened, his posture a mask for the turmoil within him.“I do not want to believe that you lost your way and happened to step in here.”He gestured to the guard who had come to inform him of Don Silva’s presence,a flicker of steel in his eyes.“Leave us.”The guard quickly scurried out.“You would like to hear what I have to say in your office I presume.Walls have ears as they say. Who knows what might be in the news next.”,Son Silva smirked never taking his eyes off Salvatore.“Do not patronise me,Don Silva!”,Salvatore responded his voice in a rasp.Don Silva stared at him with amusement.Salvatore would never let go off his pride even when he was at the verge of losing it all.He had to give it to him but this was what it was.He had what Salvatore needed at the moment and he too wanted something in return. When it was evident to Salvatore that Don Silva was
Anya’s pov My hands clammed in shock as the import of my father’s words hit me. A feeling of dread settled in my belly as I tried to wrap my head around the sudden turn of events. Some few hours ago we had all been on the edge following the scandal and impending investigation. My mind raced fast trying to piece events of the day together.Nothing of interest happened except Don Silver’s visit. My eyes widened upon remembrance and the feeling of dread intensified in my belly.“Who?”, I gasped my question a mere whisper against the deafening silence at the table.Father avoided my gaze, his jaw clenching.“Kian DaSilver, Don Silver’s grandson.”My mouth dropped open. The name DaSilver had been making rounds ever since Kian DaSilver took over his father’s position as Capo after his gruesome murder.Rumors churned that he was irrevocably cruel, pitiless and built like a bull.My frequent eavesdropping at father’s office had made me hear father curse at him for drug route
