Kathryn's phone rang just as she had finished tidying up the lounge. She picked up her phone and checked the caller ID. It was from an unknown number.

She answered the call. "Hello."

"Kathryn, this is Mom speaking." The caller was Wendy. She was speaking gently and cautiously.

Kathryn frowned and was about to hang up the call when Wendy hurriedly stopped her. "Don't hang up, please."

"What do you want?" Kathryn asked coldly. Her tone was icy.

"I'm still at the hospital. Can you come over?"

"To pay your bills? I'm not coming," Kathryn replied bluntly. Despite her usual timidity, she wasn't stupid.

She knew who had been good to her and who hadn't. Wendy's fake gentleness, which had traumatized her since childhood, would never deceive her. She knew Wendy all too well.

Wendy was anxious. "What am I going to do if you don't? We owe the hospital more than three thousand dollars. Besides, it was your friend who hit me."
