Amber’s POV

“What the hell do you think you are doing?” Lydia shrieked, startling me. The cleaning basket I carried in one hand fell to the ground, and that gained me a cheek-numbing slap. Red flashed in my vision, and for a moment, I thought I saw blood.

“You wench!” she spat. “Do you even realise what you’ve done?” I shook my head, trying to keep the tears at the back of my eyes from rolling down. It was not the worst I've been made to endure, but I was beginning to get tired of it.

“I’m sorry, ma’am.” My voice came out a little lower than a whisper, but with her sharp wolf hearing, I was sure she heard me loud and clear. Her nose turned up in disgust, and her eyes immediately went to the table I had been cleaning before she marched in.

“Do you know what it means that we are hosting the culling?” As she spoke, she drew a finger along the table andbrought it up to her face. Shaking her mass of brown curls, she glared at me. “I’m sure you don’t realise how big this is and how important it is for everything to be perfect, or are you just going all out to destroy things because that is what you are good at?”

I kept my gaze to the ground, holding my breath till my lungs burned. I could not say a word or try to defend myself. The last time I had tried to, I ended up at the bottom of the well without food for weeks. And that was not even the worst of my punishments.

“The Lycan King would be in attendance. I’m sure he would not want to see these scratches you made on this table.”

Of course, there were no scratches on the table, but who was I to argue her point when I knew where it’d land me?

“What is going on here?” I faltered as I heard the familiar voice of Alpha Derrick and felt his presence approaching us.There had been a time when I would have rejoiced that I had a saviour, but now I knew better. No one in the Moonstone pack could save me.

“I asked a question,” he said, stopping inches from where I stood. “Why is the slave not working?”

“Because she is useless.” Lydia imputed sharply. “I caught her messing up this table, and I was just about to punish her.”

I felt Alpha Derrick’s eyes on my form, taking me in, drinking in my features—as he always did—before turning to observe the table. “Leave.” He ordered. “I will punish her myself.”

The click-clacks of shoes and the resounding bang of the closing door announced her departure, but I still could not lift my head. Alpha Derrick was even much worse than Lydia.

“Amber,” he called softly.

Hearing my name on his lips startled me. Before I could react to my name and the way he called it, I felt his hand on my shoulder, his nails digging into my skin. “Are you doing this on purpose?”

The tears I had been holding rolled down my face. I shook my head, biting down hard on my bottom lip to keep the words at the tip of my tongue from tumbling out. His Alpha power filled the room, intimidating me further. Even with no wolf, I could feel the strength he was holding back.

Suddenly, his grip softened, but his hand stayed on my shoulder. It was the only thing that kept me from collapsing to the ground and melting away.

“I will let you go this one time,” he said, patting my shoulder. “You know why?” Sniffling, I shook my head. “Too bad you don’t remember. Stop trembling, Amber, and prepare to be my mate after the Culling.”

Without thinking, my head shot up to meet eyes that were as black as coal. As quickly as they had snapped up, it snapped back down. “I’m sorry,” I said quickly, fearing the repercussions of what I had just done. “But what about my wolf?”

Alpha Derrick laughed as he moved away. “Are you still holding out hope for that? Be realistic, Amber. You turnedtwenty-four a month ago. It is already too late for that. You have no wolf. Wake up and face your reality.”

“Now, get on with your work and make no mistakes this time. Even if you are to be my mate, I will not spare you being punished for messing up. We cannot have the Lycan King and other Alphas looking down on us. Do you understand?”

I waited until his receding footsteps faded into the distance before letting out a weak cry. Leaning against the table, I closed my eyes and let all the tears fall. I hated this house, I hated this pack, I hated Alpha Derrick, and most of all, I hated the moon goddess for denying me something that I desired so much.

I was supposed to find my wolf at the age of eighteen, meet my mate, and get out of here. I could finally escape, but six years later, here I was still, a slave and a punching bag for every damn member of the Moonstone Pack.

The memories of all the punishments and beatings I had been made to endure were still fresh in my head. On bad nights, I relived all of those memories, the nightmare pulling me to reality with bouts of sweat and pain.

In those perilous moments when I stood at the juncture between life and death, one thought alone kept me grounded and clinging to life and sanity.

Getting my wolf and meeting my destined mate.

What would be left after I lost that too? Standing to my feet, I dusted myself off and picked up my cleaning basket. Till the culling came and went, I could not give up hope.

The door creaked open, and Lydia sauntered in again, snarling when her eyes landed on my form. “You are still here? Do you wish to be lashed? Because this is just you begging for a lashing.”

“No, ma’am.” I answered, keeping my head down as I rushed to her side. Before I could react, I felt her fist on my face. It sent a flash of electrifying pain into my head. I was sure she had broken something. Twinkling stars danced in my vision, and I stumbled back once, twice, before landing hard on my butt on the hard floor.

Lydia’s lid quivered as it always did when she was upset. Her hands balled into fists by her side, and I could see her struggling to rein in her anger. “Get the hell out of my sight and make yourself useful. If there weren’t so much to do, I would lash you personally till you wound up in the infirmary, holding on to only a thread of that pathetic life of yours.”

Without waiting to be told a second time, I scurried out of the hall, making my way to the outskirts of the yard where the culling was to be held.

The sun was still up, but, in a few hours, the red moon would be out, and most people would get their wolves. I could already hear their satisfying screams in my head as their bones broke and reset themselves, giving them their wolf form.

Hopefully, this time I would be one of them.

Without wasting any more time, I rushed to the kitchen and began setting up the ingredients for dinner. New werewolves ate a lot—at least, that was what I heard—after that, they would go hunting in the forest for fresh meat and then...

“Oh, if it isn’t the one and only wolf-less werewolf.” I stiffened as I heard the voice behind me. I had hoped I would finish this task without running into any more people or getting any more injuries.

Plastering a smile on my face, I turned around, sighing inwardly when I saw that my enemy came with a team. I was already contemplating making a run for it, but with five of them, it would be impossible.

“Oh, sorry. It is an insult to call you a werewolf. I apologize. The girl said, giving a mock bow. Her team laughed dryly. “I mean, an insult to our kind. You know? The actual werewolves?” This garnered her another round of laughter from her friends.

“Celia, I have work to do.” I said, returning to the heap of work before me.

Celia was Lydia’s daughter and a total replica of her mother, except that what her mother lacked in height, Celia made up for times two. She was as tall as a pole, and she liked to use this to her advantage, especially against me.

“Ha, the slave now has the effrontery to speak back and even turn her back to me.” I heard her say behind me and knew instantly that there was no way I was getting out of this unscathed. Sighing, I turned around, about to reply when I felt it.

I had to grip the washbasins sitting on the table before me for support. The feeling was gone as soon as it came. I turned around, casting a quick glance at the girls to see if they had felt it too, but they did not appear like they felt anything. Celia, the leader of the gang, had her hands folded across her chest and was walking slowly towards me. Her team formed a half circle in front of the door in case I tried to run. I ran through various scenarios in my head that could get me out of this, but there were none. Celia was just as vicious as her mother. If I managed to escape her here, she would just corner me elsewhere, and my punishment would be worse. Taking a deep breath in, I prepared myself for whatever hell she was about to unleash on me when she came to a stop in front of me. “Someone thinks she’s big enough to talk back at us now tha

Amber’s POVJumping to my feet, I whirled around, making sure I kept my eyeballs glued to my feet. Who was it that found me, and what punishment would I face this time for being caught out here? That was the thought that ran through my mind until I heard the most angelic voice that could ever exist. “What are you doing out here, Lady, when everyone else is celebrating a successful red moon? Or do you have no intention of finding your mate?” The man said, causing my heart to stir. If his voice had a taste, then it would be vanilla and cinnamon, which complemented his cedarwood scent perfectly. “I asked you a question, lady. Common courtesy demands that you answer.” His voice was too sweet for my weak heart; still, I could not bring myself to look at his face. I had never heard or smelled anyone so... so glorious in the pack. Was he an outsider? A peek would give me an answer to my questions, but I could not risk it.An involuntary whimper escaped my throat, my lower lip quivering pat

Amber’s POVWhat? What did he mean by forbidding Alpha Derrick from taking me as his mate? I had no idea what this was about or how to feel about it. And I guess Alpha Derrick felt the same way, because he immediately jumped to his feet. “What do you mean by I cannot mate Amber? She is a slave in my settlement, and as such, I have every right...”The words died in Alpha Derrick’s mouth when the Lycan King also stood to his feet. His power and aura dominating the room, even Alpha Derrick deflated under its weight. My chest tightened, and I could hardly breathe. I felt like a mouse trapped in the middle of two elephants. It was not a good feeling. “From what I recall, Alpha Derrick, you have a true mate. Do you not? What was her name again?” The Lycan King made an exaggerated gesture of scratching his stubble. “Celia, was it? If you mated Amber, what would she be? Will you break your bond with Celia?”For the first time in my life, I saw Alpha Derrick stumble with his words. “I...” h

Focusing my attention on the people in the room, I had not noticed when Celia came in; neither had I noticed that it was time for Alpha Derrick’s morning tea.She balanced the tray in her hand on Alpha Derrick’s desk before turning to glare at me. “Why are you here, slave, when it is clear that the Lycan king is in a meeting with my MATE? Should you be here? Do you not know your place? ”My body tensed up, and I lowered my head even more. Dale’s POV I snapped my head up. He was mentioning that word again, but for some reason, I could not bring myself to ask him anything about it. Like before, his finger went under my chin, and he pushed my face up till I was staring into his pool of blue eyes. “Tell me, are you okay? ”I nodded. “Yes,” I added almost immediately. “I am fine.”His arm around my waist tightened. It took every shred of strength within me to keep my face straight and a scream from escaping my throat. A knock sounded on the door, and an auburn-haired lady waltzed in.I breathed a sigh of relief when his arm around me relaxed and he stepped away. I lowered my head again, digging my nails into my skin to keep myself from feeling the biting pain in my side. “This is Gwen, the omega I told you about. She will help you with settling in. If there is anything you need and I am not available, let her know. She will make sure you get it.” He turned to the lady who had just arrived, nodding curtly at her. “Gwen.

  • Bride Of The Lycan King   Scars of the Past

Dale’s POV Amber’s body was a map of wounds, bruises, and scars. The horrified expression on Janine’s face confirmed just how bad I thought it was. The scars did not look like they had been treated by a professional, and so they did not heal correctly. I glanced at Janine, whose eyes were settled on me. She knew I was struggling to hold my wolf together, and I could see her readying herself to hold me back if it came to it. “Who did this to you?” I growled, unable to keep the pain my wolf felt out of my voice. “Tell me who did this to you!”‘And let me tear them apart, limb by limb.’ my wolf added. Amber fumbled with her dress, pulling it tightly against her lean frame. She was looking everywhere but at me and Janine. Even Janine looked short of words, and I did not blame her. Neither of us had seen something so terrible before. “Amber!” I demanded. “Speak, or I will pry the words from you myself. Was it Derrick? Lydia? Who exactly did this to you?My fist came down hard, st

  • Bride Of The Lycan King   Missing

Amber’s POV Although he said we now shared a room, Alpha Dale did not return to the room that night, nor did I see him at the dining area the next day after that. For three long days—unlike me—I was left to wonder where he was and what he might be doing. If he was okay or if he needed something. Janine checked on me from time to time, and we were becoming fast friends. I don’t know if that was the word to use, but she did seem to me like a decent and genuinely honest person that I was beginning to take a liking to. “Do you believe him?” I started slowly watching Janine for a reaction. We were in her office at the infirmary, and as always, Janine was busy sorting out her stuff. She glanced up at me, her brows knotting as she tried to make sense of my question. “What do you mean? Believe who?” “Alpha Dale.” I answered, careful to keep my eyes lowered and avoid eye contact now that she was looking directly at me. “He thinks I have a wolf.” Janine smiled. “He doesn’t ‘think’ you hav

He combed his unruly hair back and paced to the window. “He gave up the Alpha title and left, just like that.”I opened my mouth to speak when he glanced at me. “Why? Why would he leave just like that and at a time like this? ”My eyes dropped to the ground. First of all, I was relieved that he was fine, and for some reason, I wanted to keep him with me forever. Secondly, Alpha Derrick gave up his Alpha title and was gone. “Your return to the moonstone pack?” I shook my head, confused as to why he would do that. “Do you have any idea why he would leave? Did you ever hear anything?” he gestured to me. “Celia and Lydia are gone as well. I’m surprised that I heard nothing of this until I arrived there myself. ”I shook my head, closing my eyes to clear out my thoughts. Where would he go and why? “Amber!” Alpha Dale’s cold fingers slipped under my chin, lifting my face up. Slowly, I opened my ey

Dale’s POV Everything faded away. The voices, the music, the stares, and the murmurs. Nothing registered in my brain. All that existed was Amber and the thunderous pounding of my heartbeat. She was breathtaking. Literally. The red gown clung to her body like paint, swishing when she began to walk slowly towards me. My wolf growled, eager to sink our fangs into her neck and claim her. Mine. That was what everyone needed to know. She glowed like the sun, but it was her scent—the sweet smell of honey, moonflowers, and cinnamon—that shattered the last of my restraints. I reached for her without thinking, one hand gripping her waist and pulling her into my body and the other, tilting her chin up so I could look into those eyes. Amber. Beautiful, just like her name. Everything about her was so perfect it drove me crazy. The way her body was a perfect fit in mine, the way her lips parted slightly as if she was breathless, the way her eyes flickered between a glowing gold and warm

  • Bride Of The Lycan King   Problems and Temptations

Dale’s POV I shouldn’t have kissed her. The last time I had realized that too late was when she was bleeding from injuries that were supposed to be healing. This time, I had almost made the same mistake again—or was it not a mistake? Maybe it was the fact that I could feel our bond growing stronger with each day that passed. That I felt it pulling me closer to her the harder I fought, even now, all I wanted to do was turn back and run into her arms, but it was too late for that. I had fled out of there like I was running from her, and it wasn’t the first time. I exhaled sharply, forcing the memory of her from my mind as I walked into my office, where Beta Trent was already waiting. His brow shot to his hairline as he watched me, pursing his lips in a comic attempt to hold back the words, which I could see dancing from the edge of his tongue. “You look like hell.” He said finally. “Are you doing alright?” “I’m fine,” I lied. “How are preparations going?” “Security is in place,

  • Bride Of The Lycan King   The Last Dinner

Amber’s POV By the time we were tying off the last banner, the smell of meat was thick in the air. Why the hell did someone decide it was okay for the event hall to be this close to the kitchen? My stomach rumbled, reminding me of how long it's been since breakfast. I clapped the dust off my hands, barely listening as Janine thanked the boys and motioned us to the door. We had worked all afternoon—skipping through lunch—busying ourselves with last-minute preparations. Tomorrow’s blood moon was going to be a blast, and I was kind of happy with the work I’d done. Back at Moonstone, I’d have been scurrying around, struggling to finish tasks that I’d never get a thank you for. Maybe a punishment or two. Events and celebrations were always things I dreaded. Maybe it was time that changed too. “Finally, we can eat.” Janine laughed. “Goddess, the food smells so good.”She closed her eyes, inhaling a lungful of the scented air before opening them again. I was so engrossed with watc

  • Bride Of The Lycan King   The Blood Moon’s Eve

Amber’s POV The room Janine brought us to was large. No matter how much I stretched my eyes, I couldn’t see the other end of the room. That could be because of the fact that the room was packed with people doing decorations and now, we were about to be one of them. Janine marched ahead of us, her arms filled with fabrics, lines and what nots which she threw unceremoniously on one of the table before turning to Yeti and me. “Alright, girls,” she said, clapping her hands together. “Let’s get to work. ”Yeti and I exchanged glances before glancing at the towering pile of fabric and garland we were supposed to be helping with. I sighed dramatically, shuffling forward lazily. “So…” I picked up a roll of ribbon and turned to Janine. “Is there a plan? I get we are supposed to finish putting all these up before morning? ”Janine scoffed. “There’s always a plan. I have a plan. And you both are only here to follow orders.” “Seems fair, although I feel like I’ve been tricked.” I glanced at

  • Bride Of The Lycan King   In Lieu of the Blood Moon

Amber’s POV Ink smudged beneath my fingertips, bleeding into white paper. I inhaled sharply, dragging my sleeve over the mess, but it only made it worse. I thought I could practice my writing to get rid of the boredom I felt, but my crooked and jagged letters only mocked me. Sighing, I tore off the page, crumbling it into a ball, and tried to throw it into the wastebasket that sat way too far—not far enough—from my bed. But just like my fifty-something failed attempts, this one stopped short of the basket, rolling on the ground next to its friends. I sighed, shutting the book with a thud. Even from here, I could hear the commotion of activities going on outside. Everyone was busy doing something—except me, of course. If this was the Moonstone pack. I was sure no one would have cut me any slack, no matter how sick I was. I closed my eyes, pinching the bridge of my nose as something stirred inside me. Hopefully, it wasn’t what I was thinking it was. The priestess had assured

  • Bride Of The Lycan King   A Willing Sacrifice

Dale’s POV “It has to be a willing sacrifice.” One that the witch did not look willing to make. I mean, who in their right senses would give their life up for another? Even I could not ask her to do that. Amber’s life was important, and so was the life of others. I was beginning to understand why Derrick held onto Yeti even though she was useless to him—he intended to use her to threaten her mother when it came to this. ‘You can make her as well,’ my wolf pressed. ‘You’re Lycan King, and this is Amber we are talking about. Our mate. ’I clenched my jaw, forcing myself to breathe through the haze of emotions that pressed down on me. ‘I can’t make her give up her life for Amber if she’s not willing to do it. Did you not hear the part where she said, ‘a willing sacrifice?’ I shot back. ‘You have her daughter. You can use that to make her… more willing.’I tried not to roll my eyes. ‘I’m not Derrick.’ I answered simply, pushing him deeper so he could keep his thoughts to hims

  • Bride Of The Lycan King   The Traitor

Dale’s POV “It was Mallory.” What?! I could hardly react, hardly breathe as the words slammed into me. Unconsciously, I turned to my brother Eric, reading the horror and disbelief that appeared on his face as the words sank in. It couldn’t really be…“Are you sure about… Amber? You may have—” Amber shook her head. “I’m sure, Alpha Dale. It was her. She…” Her eyes darted to where Eric stood, and she hesitated. “She did what, Amber?” I prompted. “She planned this whole thing with Emily.” Her body trembled, probably as she relived the memories of that place. I clenched my fist—for a second, I felt everything at once. I wanted to scream and, at the same time, break something—preferably, Mallory’s nose. “Who the hell is Emily?” Trent asked, beating me to it. “The woman who lured me from here.” Amber answered, lowering her head. “I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have gone…” Janine shuffled closer to her, placing a gentle hand on her shoulder to comfort her. I turned around to give orders to

Amber’s POV My eyes blinked open painfully. My head was heavy and unclear, and the light burned through my eyes. I shut my eyes again, waiting a second before blinking them open. I was in a room… Was this a dream? I was sure I was dead before. The room looked and smelled familiar and made me want to forget everything and sleep forever. Wait… what was it I wanted to forget? I had the gnawing feeling that there was something I was supposed to remember. A figure moved on the bed beside me, and I turned towards it. A man. An angel? He certainly looked like one. My guardian angel? I raised my hand to touch his face… my hand wouldn’t move. Everything felt so heavy…I closed my eyes, forgetting the world I just saw and allowing the darkness to swallow me up again. Rest. I needed to rest for as long as it took my body to recover… What was I recovering from? My eyes fluttered open, the world around me swimming in a haze of blinding light and aching exhaustion. My chest tightened, and

  • Bride Of The Lycan King   A Resurrection

Dale’s POV Trent was convinced he had found something. My heart raced; my wolf was ridden with anxiety, and he did not hesitate to snap at anyone for any reason at all. It's been two whole days, and there was no sign of Amber or her captor and no clue as to where we could find her. Silas had his men comb the entire city, turning the place upside down, while the rest of us searched the place where the cameras caught her last. I left no stone unturned, but there was no evidence that she was ever here. No scent, no leftover fear or emotions to hold on to. Except for the camera recording, which pinpointed her location as this area, everything else showed nothing, and it was frustrating. So when Trent announced he found something, I ran. I met him crouching low on the ground, fingers grazing the earth. “Boot tracks,” he said simply. One of the trackers said they caught a faint scent around here. It might be nothing, but— ”I turned around, not waiting for him to take back the ho
