23. Nova's Story

Kai instructed me to take Nova to Nikolai’s penthouse. He still couldn’t bring himself to empty it out, so he just had a cleaner come in twice a week to keep it dust-free. Now on top of everything else, we have this to worry about. Nikolai might still be alive, and he probably got taken the night he died.
The only type of person who can fool an Alpha is a witch - Kai’s least favourite supernatural being.
We step into Nikolai’s penthouse, and Nova stops walking. I’m about to ask her if something is wrong when I see her shoulders shaking, and she lets out a sniff.
“This is his scent,” she murmurs, then turns to look at me. “This is Nikolai!”
I can’t help but smile at her pure reaction and her wide-eyed innocence. She may not be Nikolai’s type of girl, but I can tell she’s being genuine.

Cain nods then launches into the same story he told me - including the fact that he worked as a mercenary for Stefan. “I came here seeking your help in reclaiming my territory, but it seems that I’ll be the one leaving with more than I thought I would.” He says, his eyes falling on a wide-eyed Caterina. “Those scars on your neck, who caused them?” Cat asks, looking small in the plush leather seat next to Kai. KonstantinKai called me late afternoon the following day to let me know that the witches had arrived at the estate and I needed to get my ass over there. Cat is there as well; she wouldn’t stay put no matter how Kai ordered her to.Sounds like Cat, ha.The anticipation is at a dangerous level inside of me; I need to know what we can do to eliminate the obstacle in front of us. Of course, this plan heavily depends on where Stefan is located because as much as he doesn’t want to admit it, Kai is out for blood. There’s a reason for the whispering, and I won’t intrude.Lily smiles and nods when I tell her what I’m about to do, and my heart just about bursts out of my chest. I never thought I would see her smile at me like this ever again and my wolf just about howled because of it.We did it; we saved my mate, and our little brother is still alive.
