As it got later, some of the girls started to go to sleep, exhausted from the day's ordeal. Lavinia noticed that Helen and the other two women sat uneasily on the edges of their beds. She caught Helen's eye about to ask something, but Helen shook her head. So Lavinia stayed put, letting Rosie repetitively braid and unbraid her hair.

From the hallway came the sound of several pairs of feet. The door was thrown open and two guards stepped through. Helen looked between the guards as the two other women sat forward.

"It's my night I think," said the tallest one.

"That it is. But Mr. Astor said he wanted to try something. Something new." With a swift motion, the guard on the left seized the wrist of one of the new brunette girls. Having been asleep in her bed, she yelped. The guard to the right extended his hand towards the tall woman who stood and took it, resigned. She and the new brunette were ushered quickly into the hallway. As the door closed the girls could see the door across the hall swing closed as well.

Helen and the remaining woman gripped each other's hand briefly, then split, climbing into their respective bunks. Following their lead, Lavinia tucked her legs underneath her covers. Rosie clambered into the bunk above her and curled her legs underneath herself.

Time passed slowly and though she tried, Lavinia could not relax. She lay perfectly still, but her limbs felt as if they were vibrating. Her eyes stayed wide open, staring at the underside of Rosie's bed. Lavinia stretched her hand out in front of her, able to make out her digits in the weak darkness. Glancing to her right, Lavinia could make out a small crescent-shaped window on the wall. Through it, she could see the faint glimmer of stars.

In the upper bunk below the window, the outline of a girl sitting up was illuminated. She was turned towards the window. As Lavinia watched she reached up to the window's latch. It creaked slowly open and she stood, balancing on the hard mattress. Her arms strained to pull herself through the window. As her feet disappeared, Lavinia sat up to try and see where she had gone. She swung one of her legs off the side of the bed.

"Don't," the hiss came from the remaining woman, still awake below Helen. Lavinia looked at the woman, barely sure she had actually spoken. "Stay in your bed."

Lavinia looked back to the window, waiting. She could tell from the tension in the woman's shoulders that something would happen. Sure enough, there came the distinct sound of shouts from the open window. Footsteps clattered on the paving stones outside and the sound of men's' voices rang clearly through the dark. There was a moment of muffled struggle and then a high pitch groan of distress. The footsteps retreated, now stepping in almost unison, as if the guards were walking together now.

Then there was silence. Lavinia saw the woman settle back into her bunk and took this as a sign that the events of the evening had ended. She laid back and tucked her hands behind her head. Try as she might to empty it, her mind kept wandering back to the two girls who had been taken to Isaac. What was happening to them?

Lavinia did not know much about the specific needs of vampires, but she knew the basics. Everyone in the cities was at least passingly familiar with vampires. They tended to prowl only in the dark or when the cloud cover was sufficient. At previous jobs, Lavinia had heard stories from people who had supposedly had run-ins with the leeches. Girls complained about clients accosting them with piercing bites. Some others talked about several encounters and then eventually stopped coming into work, never to be heard from again.

There were some girls Lavinia knew of who seemed to want attention from vampires. They claimed there was something pleasurable about being on the bleeding end of a bite. To feel that vulnerable and desired. Lavinia knew whatever these girls had experienced; It would not be the same with Isaac. She turned onto her side and pulled the covers over her face.

Slowly, Lavinia's eyes drifted closed. Her sleep was fitful and light. As she slept, a faint commotion broke up her dreamless state. At first, Lavinia thought the noise was the start of a dream, but quickly realized that it was coming from outside in the hallway. As she opened her eyes the door banged against the wall and the brunette girl who had been taken was thrown back into the room.

She hit the floor as a pile of skinny flesh and bones. Her face was obscured by blood as she rolled onto her side. When the door slammed behind her, Lavinia leapt out of bed, picking the girl's head up into her lap. Se pulled the heavy braid of brunette hair off her face and onto the floor, revealing her neck, covered in gore.

Sets deep puncture marks surrounded by a heavy blotch of purple bruising littered her neck. Faint trails of dark veins spanned out from the marks, winding up into her hairline and down under the neckline of her dress. Her eyes were half-closed as she looked blearily up at Lavinia.

"What happened," Lavinia asked. "What happened to the other girl."

"She-" the girl coughed, blood spilling from between her lips. "She's gone. Dead."

Helen winced and climbed down from her bunk to it sit with the other remaining woman.

"I'm sorry," the shaking girl stuttered. "He did it so quickly."

"It will happen to all of us soon," said Helen quietly. "Isaac prefers new toys."

The girl in Lavinia's lap shuddered. "Her body was there the whole time. Looking at me while he-" she broke off, turning her face into Lavinia's leg.

"What was it like?" Rosie whispered.

"For her," the girl raised her head. "He just sort of grabbed her by the hair and bit down. She didn't even struggle. I was just stood there as he drained her. When he dropped her… her eyes were so empty."

"What did he do to you?" Lavinia asked, slowly pulling the girl into a sitting position.

"He- he grabbed me as soon as she was down. There's nothing kind in him. There were only teeth and hands that were far too tight." she brushed her hand against her upper arm and Lavinia could see the faint marks of fingertip bruises under the torn material.

"He drank from me like he was starving- like he couldn't get enough. I only think he didn't drain me dry because he killed her first."

"Astor has never once shown mercy," siad Helen. "Anyone who goes to his room either comes back a husk or not at all. She is fortunate he showed restraint."

"Restraint?" the girl whimpered.

Helen nodded. "Our first night here the new girl never came back. His next pick screamed all the way up the hallway."

"Where did Juniper go?" the brunette asked, turning her head towards the open bunk. Lavinia hesitated for a second, looking between the brunette and the woman who had warned her to stay put.

Eventually, the silence got to be too much. "She tried to run," Lavinia said. "She made it outside and… we heard a scream."

"We never see the ones who run come back. Not even as bodies. Most likely she went to the plant where the Astors manufacture blood." Said the woman on the lower bunk. "Did he say anything else?"

The girl shook her head. "No. Well, he said he was looking forward to- there was a name he said. With an L."

Lavinia froze. She knew it was her name but she could not bear to hear the girl say it. "Ok. That's enough. Let's get you to bed." She eased the girl off her lap and stood. With the help of the girl with curly hair, she was able to get the bitten girl to her feet and carefully into her bed. Lavinia took the case off her own pillow to gently press against the open wound on the girl's neck. It quickly spotted, but Lavinia felt satisfied that it would be enough for the night.

As she finally pulled her covers securely around her, Lavinia's mind raced. Isaac Astor was thinking about her. The cruel bastard was focused enough on her that he had threatened another girl with her name. She knew that it was only a matter of time before she herself was called into his room. And she knew that when her time came it would be brutal.

Over the next several days the wound on the brunette girl's neck began to fade and heal. The purple bruising lifted to an off-colored yellow and the puncture marks reduced to slight pinpricks. The only outside interaction came from the guards dropping off food. They replaced Lavinia's pillowcase, taking the stained one away."What is he doing?" Rosie asked."Isaac doesn't feed every day," said Helen. "He likes to take his time. I think he likes seeing how weak he can get his prey. Otherwise, I'd expect that he would just let the company take care of it.""Is that what the rest of the family does?" asked Lavinia."Sort of," Helen replied. "I don't know much about the family, but on a few occasions I've seen his sister taking her meals.""Sister?""Yeah. She keeps her stock in the room across the hall."The other woman piped up. "I've heard that most of her victims get to leave.""What?" Lavinia turned to look at her."She has restraint."Helen laughed sadly. "Or Isaac is just

Lavinia lay splayed on Isaac's bed. Her corset was unhooked and thrown open over her slightly torn chamise. She breathed slowly, taking stock of the sensation coursing through her body. Across her body were marks of reddish-purple bruising surrounding pairs of pinpricks. The pain of each blended into a strange sense of total relief and euphoria. Lavinia felt weak and drained. She knew that even if she wanted to she would not be able to stand or even sit up. Her body felt light and somewhat numb, but not in an unpleasant way. Her eyes fluttered open. The room was darker than before as the fire had died to a low crackle. From her vantage point, she could see some indistinct movement by the door. Turning her head, she saw Isaac standing in the slightly open door. He was facing out, speaking softly to someone beyond the view of the door. In reply came a high, almost musical voice. In her delirium, Lavinia could only register the bare minimum of their conversation. It see

When Lavinia woke, she found that she had not moved during the night. Usually a turbulent sleeper, she was surprised that her arms were still draped across Isaac. He appeared to have stayed on his back, eyes closed. Experimentally, Lavinia took a deep breath. She could feel already that she was stronger now. The marks across her ached less and the fog around her thoughts had faded leaving a layer of disgust and apprehension. This man, this monster, had brought half a dozen girls into a house of death. He openly confessed that he enjoyed the fear and discomfort that he caused. The girls in the room could attest to the fact that he used their dread for his own pleasure. With every availability to switch to the manufactured plasma that his family produced, he still chose to select victims from the populace who had no recourse. The girls in the factory could not say no. Lavinia could still remember the heavy sound a body hitting the floor as Isaac dealt with the single girl

As Lavinia lay with the sheet over her head, the whispers around her got louder, until she could no longer tune them out. She could hear the snide comments from Annette worming their way into the other girls. What started as a light suggestion bloomed into an assumption, one that not even Helen seemed to argue against. Only Rosie stayed out of it. She climbed into the bunk above Lavinia's and hung her feet over the edge.Lavinia lay in bed the rest of the day, keeping out of sight of the other girls. She did not want to engage with their accusations, nor did she want to give them any more fuel. The sheet hid the marks on her neck and chest, marks that under closer inspection, did not all contain punctures. Some were merely bruised and broken blood vessels like Lavinia had seen on factory girls who had a husband at home or a bit on the side. Lovers marks. She had not realized how long she had been in bed when the door was opened once more. The girls swirled into an uproar.

"So you're trying to bargain now." Isaac gestured to the table. The room was set up almost exactly as it had been last time. The fire, the table, the bed. The only major difference was Isaac himself. He was dressed as he had been at the factory, but his features seemed warmer. His eyes looked awake, alert. She would not have been able to pick it out before, but Lavinia became suddenly aware that Isaac's icy eyes had faint dark lines in the iris. Had they been hazy before or had she just not looked hard enough?"So," said Isaac, folding his hands on the table between them. "What did you want to start with?""What are you playing at?""Excuse me?""I wouldn't say I felt anything for you so you start throwing girls away? I knew you were sadistic, but this is just depraved." Lavinia crossed her arms.Isaac sighed. "I didn't kill them for you.""Then what are you doing?""How much do you know about my kind?""Enough to make assumptions.""So, very little. Isaac's touch was at once softer and rougher than Lavinia could have imagined. For such a doted-on heir his hands were surprisingly calloused. He was not shy about his grip of the authoritative way he moved Lavinia. He easily shifted her, arranging her limbs to suit his fancy. Yet, he was also remarkably careful. Lavinia knew that with Isaac's demeanor and strength he could easily hurt her, shatter her. And she almost wished he would. Her loathing had not instantly let up when Isaac spoke about his own begrudging feelings. She still thought him to be a monster. But that cruel nature served only to enhance the experience. Lavinia had known many girls that worked outside of the factories for the satisfaction of others. The needed to mind their men, making personal concessions to satiate that evening's employer. Here, Lavinia had no limitations. She was able to explore and experience at her discretion. Isaac regarded her in much the same way. While their pleasure was mutual

Isaac showed Lavinia to his bathroom, outfitted with a full-length mirror and an enormous clawed tub with a handheld brass spigot. He handed her a thick towel. "I know the amenities downstairs are not the most luxurious," he paused, almost uncomfortable. "Take your time." He closed the door behind himself as he left. Lavinia turned to the mirror. Her body was skinner than she remembered. Thinned from the last few weeks of living on whatever the guards brought. Her hair had gotten longer, falling low enough now to cover her chest. Between her wavy locks of hair, she could see the purple marks that covered her body. Up by her throat, they surrounded deep puncture marks that still trickled blood. At her thighs, the marks were almost black. The bites were incredibly tender to the tough, sunk into as thick of skin as they were. When she pressed on them, she gasped. Remnants of the static twirled through her legs, making her tremble. Turning to

Waking up next to Isaac felt much more natural than it should have. It felt somehow incredibly normal to wake up and shift slightly, moving closer to him under the covers. Looking at him in the early morning light, Lavinia could tell that he truly was asleep. She smiled slightly. So, there were some human needs left after all. Eating, sleeping, what else would he need?Unbidden, the thought arose to Lavinia of herself as one of those needs. Of her being as necessary to Isaac as his instinct to feed. She quickly pushed the thought away, reminding herself that while Isaac seemed earnest, this could just be a whim. Her trust was not yet guaranteed. Though, the previous night had certainly garnered more of a bond.It was hard to take his actions and care as a ploy, but Lavinia could not help but remain cautious. Surely, had Isaac only been playing with her he would have served only his own pleasure. He would not have given so much attention to Lavinia, waiting for her to respo

Isaac stood at the head of the conference room table, hands splayed out on its surface. He stared at the assembled board of trustees. Cyril sat at his right hand, the bruising around his eyes fading. To Isaac's left was Sonia. Her hair was pulled up into a smooth bun. At the opposite head of the table was Lavinia. She sat upright, stacks of papers carefully arranged in front of her. "In the months since my mother's… shall we say, untimely passing," he said. "I have been disappointed in this board's performance. Its care and dedication to this company has waned."Several of the trustees sank back into their seats, not looking at Isaac. Sonia sat forward, trying to initiate eye contact with Cyril, who kept his gaze fixed on his own hands. "It feels as though your loyalty was to Vivian Astor, not to Astor Industries. And in light of that, I question whether your services are still needed.""Sir," an older man spoke up. "I think there is just some discomfort about the ch

"Sonia, dear, I would have much less of a problem with you if you stood to inherit anything. As it stands, Arabella has already had two eligible offers and I simply cannot allow her to risk our empire for something as frivolous as feelings."She looked at Lavinia. "You, on the other hand, were never an option. Though, I cannot exactly blame you for this whole affair. It's Isaac's weakness that led you here. He should have taken care of you when he had the chance.""Which time?" Cyril asked with a smirk. When Lavinia woke up, it took her a moment to realize where she was. The heavy drapes around the bed blocked out all the light from the open window, leaving her almost entirely in darkness. She reached out, her hand brushing Isaac's pillow. Empty.Lavinia rolled over, turning onto her side. Isaac was gone. She sat up, pulling the curtains aside to look out into the bedroom. The door to the room was open and cold air rushed in. She pulled the comforter tightly around herself, trying to maintain the little bit of warmth still left.It was Isaac's room. They were back at the manor. For all the horror she had experienced within these walls she could not stop the thought that she was home. For a moment she sat there, wrapped in the warmth of belonging. She wished that Isaac were there to share the moment, so that she could tell him that his room finally felt welcome. But the cold from the door had started to curl around her, creeping into the open side of the bed. Inside the manor, the four of them made their way to the upper floor, pausing in between Isaac and Sonia's rooms."Be careful, and lay low," Isaac said. "I have no idea who is still here. Cyril could still be waiting, and I know mother will not be happy that we were gone.""We'll be okay, Izzy," Arabella said. "You need to go lay down. You're no use to us if you're barely on your feet.""Call me if you need-""Lavinia," Arabella interrupted. "Just get him in bed, no messing around. He needs to rest. Tomorrow is going to be a nightmare." She put her arm through Sonia's, pulling her back towards her bedroom. Lavinia stayed close to Isaac as he limped towards his own room. She opened the door for him and he staggered to the bed, all but falling onto it. He unbuttoned his shirt, peeling it away from his open wounds. He threw it to the floor, trying to lie back, but Lavinia stopped him. "We need to get you cleaned up. You're not going to sleep with gashes like that."

The four of them stumbled out of the castle, finding it surprisingly empty. No one was waiting for them in the halls, no one was lurking to see the happy couple. It seemed that no one had heard anything coming from the ritual room. Still, they kept quiet as they crept across the front plaza, stopping just in front of the stables. Isaac motioned for the girls to wait, holding his hand out. "I'm going to get the carriage. Stay here." He leaned heavily on his right leg as he made his way to the stable. Lavinia caught up to him and pulled his arm over her shoulder so he could put his weight on her. She was all but carrying him as they passed through the wooden doors. As they swung closed behind them, Isaac sank down. He was shaking badly, his head falling forward against Lavinia. "Isaac?"He smiled weakly, looking up at her. His eyes glittered, red lines radiating out from his irises. "I am not doing well, Vini. As much as it pains me to say it, I might be out of my depth."

"Promise me that when this inevitably gets out of control, you will run.""I can't promise that," said Lavinia sadly. "Now go."Sonia nodded and stood up. She darted out the archway and her footsteps disappeared down the hall. Lavinia stayed where she was, still gripping the fireplace poker. Neither Isaac nor Marco was looking at her. Quickly, she pulled herself towards the fire pit.Lavinia ripped the ribbon from her neck and pulled off Isaac's ring. She pressed it on to the tip of the poker, twisting it until it stuck fast. She thrust it into the middle of the flames."Come on, come on" she watched the ring start to change color, starting to change shape around the poker. The fire was superheated, enchanted from the spattering of Rosie's blood. She looked back to the ongoing fight. Marco had pressed Isaa

Marco lept forward, now a huge wolf. His silver pelt was almost glowing in the firelight, his eyes a brilliant orange. Lavinia fell back, unable to break her fall as Marco's heavy paws landed on her shoulders. Her head hit the ground with a resounding crack. Spots of color blossomed in front of her eyes, almost blinding her. The room seemed to go quiet. Lavinia felt like she was underwater; everything around her was a mess, a blur of action. A low rumble brought her back to reality. She blinked, her vision clearing. Marco had his snout inches from her throat. With all the strength she could muster Lavinia struck him, her fist hitting him on the nose. He whined, shaking his head. His lips curled into a snarl and Lavinia braced herself for the feeling of teeth against her skin. Lavinia could feel his breath, hot on her neck, shudder. He had brushed up against Isaac's ring, still hung around her neck. He tried to swipe at the ribbon with his paw, attempting to sever it,

The man dropped Rosie's body to the floor where she curled onto her side, hands scrabbling to put pressure on her neck. Marco lowered his and Arabella's clasped hands into the basin. She stared at him, eyes wide as Rosie's blood started seeping into the long sleeves of her dress. The fabric clung to her wrists as Marco drew his hands back. He reached forward, using the sticky gore to draw a line across her mouth with his thumb. Shakily, Arabella raised her own hand to Marco's face, mirroring his actions. With a sudden motion, Marco pulled Arabella toward him and kissed her. She rested her hands on his shoulders, trying to push him away and end the kiss. Mr. Brogan rose from his seat and Isaac followed suit. Isaac took Arabella by the arm and she yelled something at him, her words drowned out by the applause from the Brogan family. He held onto her tightly, the blood spreading from her arm to the sleeve of his suit. Mr. Brogan lifted the basin from the top of the podium, ca

The morning of the ceremony was bright and clear. The sky was nearly cloudless, just thin whisps of clouds hanging like strings across the blue expanse. It felt almost ironic. Lavinia could feel the weight of the plan ahead of her pressing hard on her shoulders, but the day itself seemed entirely open. Isaac joined her at the window. Had they been at the manor, he would have suggested a walk. But today wasn't about that.As the two of them dressed, they thought only of the struggle ahead. Isaac took off the silver ring he wore on his right hand and threaded it through a ribbon. He tied it around Lavinia's neck. "Keep it tucked under your gown.""Will that actually work?"Isaac shrugged. "It will be better than nothing. And in all the days we've spent here I have not seen a single member of the pack wear silver. Even their tableware is made of a different metal."Lavinia touched the ring. It was far too large for any of her fingers. It was an element solely for protecti
