Chapter 8

Veronica’s POV

My eyes shot open as pain radiated up my leg the moment I tried to turn in bed. I blinked against the bright morning light that filtered through the curtains. My mind started playing back the event that happened the night before. ‘The fall in the forest. Can’t believe I was so stupid, I just had to stand still. Why didn’t I look where I was stepping? The sharp, twisting pain in my ankle as I fell to the ground.’

I tried to sit up, but a stabbing pain shot up my leg making me wince. With a groan, I swung my legs over the side of the bed, gently testing my weight on the injured ankle. Nope. Not happening. I sank back into the soft mattress, frustrated I let out a loud sigh. Staring at the ceiling I heard the door creak open, startled, I sat up.

An unfamiliar face stood in the doorframe, her silhouette sharp against the dim light of the hallway. Her eyes were cold, a predatory gleam in them. My pulse quickened for all the wrong reasons.

“Hi?” My voice shaky.
