"Emma, I’ve told you before. Stay. Away. From. Trouble."

Damon’s voice echoed in her ears as she slammed the library door shut behind her, her breathing uneven, her fingers trembling.

Trouble. That’s what he called every attempt of hers to remember who she was, who she might still be. Tonight was no different.

The journal lay in her lap now, its worn leather cover rough under her fingertips. It felt like holding her own heart, fragile yet alive.

She flipped the pages slowly, the faded ink revealing parts of herself she’d almost forgotten.

"Jake..." she whispered, her voice breaking.

The entry stared back at her, the words she had written years ago pulling her into the memory like a tide too strong to resist.

It had been a summer evening. Jake had surprised her with a picnic in the meadow by the old oak tree. Fireflies danced in the warm air, and his laughter filled the silence between her cautious words.

"Promise me one thing," she had said, leaning against him.

"Anything, Emma."

"That you’ll never let me lose myself."

He had kissed her forehead, his lips warm, his voice sure.

"You’ll always find your way back to me."

But here she was, years later, lost beyond recognition. And Jake? Gone.

"Emma."

Damon’s voice shattered her reverie like glass. Her head jerked up, her hands clutching the journal to her chest.

He stood in the doorway, his figure silhouetted by the dim hallway light. His face was unreadable, but his eyes—cold, calculating—burned with something she had learned to fear.

"I warned you." His tone was low, dangerous.

Emma stood, her legs shaking but firm enough to hold her weight. The journal pressed against her ribs as if shielding her heart.

"You warned me not to think, not to feel," she said, her voice trembling but defiant. "That’s not the same as living."

Damon’s lips curled into a predatory smile.

"Living? You call this living?" He gestured toward the room, his gaze sweeping over the empty walls, the cold floors. "This is survival, Emma. And you survive because of me."

She took a step back, her heel brushing the edge of the desk.

"You don’t own me," she said, her voice stronger now.

His laughter was sharp, cutting through the thick air.

"Oh, Emma. You’re not even sure who you are without me."

The words hit her like a slap. He was right, wasn’t he? The years she had spent under his shadow had stripped away pieces of herself until she was barely a whisper of the woman she used to be.

"That’s not true," she said, her hands tightening around the journal.

Damon stepped closer, the space between them shrinking to nothing. His hand reached for her face, but she turned her head away.

"Then prove it," he said, his voice a deadly whisper.

Emma’s pulse roared in her ears as his grip tightened on her arm, pulling her closer.

"You want freedom?" Damon sneered. "Go ahead. Run to Jake."

Her breath caught at the mention of his name.

"You think he’ll save you?" Damon’s voice dripped with disdain. "He left you, Emma. Just like everyone else."

Her chest ached, his words burrowing deep into the cracks of her fragile resolve. But then she remembered the meadow, the fireflies, the promise.

"You’re wrong," she said, her voice steady despite the fear clawing at her throat.

Damon’s eyes darkened, his grip like iron.

"We’ll see about that," he said, yanking the journal from her hands.

Panic surged through her as the journal fell to the floor, its pages scattering.

"No!" she cried, dropping to her knees.

Damon stepped on the fragile pages, grinding them under his heel.

"Enough of this nonsense," he said coldly.

Tears blurred her vision, but anger burned hotter than her despair. She rose, her fists clenched, her voice trembling but fierce.

"You don’t get to take him from me."

Damon laughed again, his amusement cruel.

"Haven’t I already?"

The words were a knife twisting in her chest. But she wouldn’t let him win, not this time.

Without thinking, she lunged for the journal, snatching it from the floor and clutching it tightly. Damon’s hand shot out, but she dodged him, her instincts fueled by desperation.

"You can’t stop me," she said, her voice shaking but resolute.

His eyes narrowed, a dangerous glint flashing in them.

"Can’t I?" he said, his tone a chilling promise.

She didn’t wait to find out. Clutching the journal, she ran, her bare feet pounding against the cold floor. Behind her, Damon’s voice rose in fury.

"You’ll regret this, Emma!"

But she didn’t stop. For the first time in years, she felt the faintest spark of something she thought she had lost forever.

Hope.

The night air was biting as she burst through the side door and into the courtyard. She looked over her shoulder, her heart racing. Damon would follow, she knew that. But for now, she had a head start.

Her feet carried her toward the gate, her lungs burning with every breath. She didn’t know where she was going, only that she had to get away.

And as she ran, clutching the journal to her chest, one thought echoed in her mind:

Find Jake.
